Soil Compaction Avoiding land compaction while carrying out effective Verticality Checks to overhead power lines. Soil Compaction

At UTSS, much of our work involves surveying landscapes, industrial structures, and overhead lines. This work often involves traversing rural land in large, heavy vehicles with wide tyres for necessary stability. Whether this land is agricultural or more open, the subsequent soil compression caused by the heavy vehicles can pose a big problem.

How Does It Work? We often complete essential ground data next to major road routes and motorways, assessing overhead lines, for example, and this involves UTSS traversing fields that run alongside most major motorways. Along with a pneumatic mast, supporting a 3D laser scanner or camera, we use a lightweight low-ground pressure ATV, the Polaris, which can transport this pneumatic mast with ease and, more importantly, allows us to access all areas without causing damage or compaction to the underlying soil.

Why Is It Useful? We successfully avoid soil compaction when surveying. Soil compaction can be described as the moving of soil particles closer together by external forces such as a tractor, and this ultimately leads to loss of pore space within the soil. The results of this can be disastrous to crops and vegetation, causing poor internal drainage of the soil and greater ‘runoff’, leading to soil loss and erosion, not a great situation for land. Soil compression will also hinder root development and the delayed maturity of a crop. All in all, soil compression is something to be avoided at all costs, and our low ground pressure Polaris vehicles do just that when surveying.
