Welcome to the Winter 2022 Edition of the UTHSC Department of Surgery.

Following another successful year in the Department and with the holiday season upon us, we have much to celebrate and to be thankful for.

However, despite somewhat fading from the top of the headlines, the war in the Ukraine continues to persist with ongoing devastation. We are extremely proud of the members of the Department who have contributed to providing assistance. This past fall, the Department and College of Medicine played host to a delegation of young Ukrainian surgeons. Our UTHSC and ROH faculty shared their expertise, particularly in the area of trauma and burn care. Furthermore, this volume’s Faculty Spotlight highlights Dr. Nia Zalamea’s remarkable efforts to deliver a massive shipment of medical equipment to providers in the Ukraine.

Herein, we also continue our Alumni Spotlight series which features Dr. Brian Brewer, Class of 2010, who has distinguished himself as a leading trauma surgeon in this country.

Congratulations are due to faculty members who were appointed to important departmental leadership positions. Dr. Erica Mitchell and Dr. Paxton Dickson have been named Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and Vice Chair of Outreach and Alumni Affairs, respectively. Dr. Martin Fleming has been appointed Student Clerkship Director and Dr. Jason Vanatta has been named Chief of the Division of Transplantation (Interim).

Harwell Wilson Alumni Endowed Chair in Surgery Professor and Chair

MARTIN FLEMING, MD, FACS

Division Chief, Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, has been named Acting Student Clerkship Director. He will provide oversight of medical student rotations in the Department of Surgery.

ERICA MITCHELL, MD

Division Chief, Professor, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, has been appointed ViceChair for Academic Affairs, effective July 1, 2023. She will serve a 2-year renewable term and will assist the Chair in overseeing the academic advancement of the faculty members in the department.

PAXTON DICKSON, MD, FACS

Associate Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, has been appointed Vice-Chair for Outreach and Alumni affairs to be effective February 1, 2023. He will serve a 2-year renewable term and will serve as a liaison to the community and our surgical alumni.

JASON VANATTA, MD, FACS

Professor, Division of Transplantation, has been appointed Interim Chief of the Division of Transplantation. He has also been offically named the Director of the Transplant Institute.

FACULTY ANNOUCEMENTS

ANKUSH GOSAIN, MD, PHD, FACS, FAAP

Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs, Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was the recipient of an American Surgical Association Surgical Leaders Fellowship award. He was also appointed as a standing member of NIDDK DDK-F Study Section (Term 2023-2027). He is a coinvestigator on two recently funded U01 (“Paneth cell dysfunction in radiation injury”) and R01 (“Defining the Role of Intestinal Calcium Channels in Alcoholic Liver Damage”) grants.

NIA ZALAMEA, MD, FACS

Assistant Professor, Division of General Surgery, Director of UTHSC Global Surgery Institute, was appointed Program Director of the SAGES Global Laparoscopy Advancement Program (GLAP) Namibia committee and named virtual curriculum lead for SAGES GLAP Costa Rica – Gastric Cancer Collaborative.

DAVID SHIBATA, MD, FACS, FSSO, FASCRS

Chair, Department of Surgery, Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, was selected as one of the 2022 Healthcare Heroes honorees from the Memphis Business Journal in the Physician category. He was featured in December’s publication, which is available in print and online.

PETER E. FISCHER, MD, MS

Associate Professor, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, was elected as the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society’s President. The Harwell Wilson Surgical Society (HWSS) was founded on May 19, 1973 to honor Dr. Harwell Wilson, the Chair of the Department of Surgery from 1948-1974. HWSS is dedicated to providing support for the UTHSC Department of Surgery residents including important educational research and training resources.

ASHLEY HENDRIX, MD

Assistant Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, has relocated from the Methodist LeBonheur system to UT Regional One Physicians (UTROP). She will continue to provide specialized breast surgery services at both East and Downtown locations. Dr. Hendrix was also inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons at the annual Clinical Congress in San Diego, CA.

AMANDEEP BAJWA, PHD

Associate Professor, Division of Transplantation, was awarded a $2 million R01 research grant from the NIDDK. Along with Co-PI Navjot Pabla, PhD, associate professor of pharmaceutics and pharmacology at The Ohio State University, Dr. Bajwa will initiate the study entitled, “Off Target mechanisms of Kinase Inhibitors Toxicities”, which will span four years and seek broad insights into the pharmacological action of kinase inhibitormedications.

JAMES W. EUBANKS III, MD, FACS

Division Chief, Professor, Division of Pediatrics Surgery, was invited to participate in a health discussion entitled, “Health Care Preparedness and Response Capabilities

Feedback Session for Health Care Workers,” with the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) in May 2022.

DEVRA BECKER, MD, FACS

Division Chief, Professor, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, was selected as one of Castle Connolly’s Exceptional Women in Medicine for 2022. This is a special recognition based on the outstanding accomplishments and dedication to the field of medicine, recognizing women who contribute to the advancement of healthcare through clinical care, research, community service, education and leadership. She was also selected as Parliamentarian on the Board of the American Council of Academic Plastics Surgeons. Becker served as the Walter Scott Brown Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago.

TIM JANCELEWICZ, MD, MA, MS, FAAP, FACS

Associate Professor, Division of Pediatrics Surgery, was appointed to the editorial board of the journal Frontiers in Pediatrics. He will also serve on the editorial boards of Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Journal of Surgical Research.

Dr. Jancelewicz was recognized as a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Merit Reviewer.

NABAIJIT CHOUDHURY, MD, MBBS, MS

Assistant Professor, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, was a lead author of a chapter in the SAGES Manual of Quality, Outcomes and Patient Safety entitled, “Prevention of Common Bile Duct Injury: What Are we as Surgeons Doing to Prevent Injury.”

LIZ WOOD, MD, MS

Assistant Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, was named to NCCN Colorectal Screening expert panel. She was also inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons at the annual Clinical Congress in San Diego, CA.

DENIS FORETIA, MD, MPH, MBA

Assistant Professor, Division of General Surgery, serves as coChair of the Denis and Lenora Foundation. The Foundation was awarded a two-year grant from the Rising Tide Foundation ($250,000) and the John Templeton Foundation ($234,000) for a project entitled, “Powering Prosperity and Freedoms for Women and Youths-Cameroon.” The funding will support system changes, empowerment of individuals, and teaching economic freedom in Cameroon.

Additionally, Dr. Foretia was named an At-Large Director (West Region) of the Tennessee Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, was appointed to the ACS Committee on Diversity Issues for a three-year term, and participated as a mentee in the American College of Surgeons Leaders Pilot Program.

Associate Professor, Division of Pediatrics Surgery, was featured in an Action News 5 televised segment, “Reducing gun crime through violence interruption programs,” on August 2, 2022.

NEW DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY ADMINSTRATIVE STAFF

CHANG CHOI, MBA

Named Director of Administration for the Department of Surgery in December 2022, Chang served previously as the University of Memphis’ Foundation Accounting Manager. He brings 20+ years of highered experience in the areas of grants and contracts accounting, accounts payables, and departmental administrative management. Chang has a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in Accounting (South Korea) and an MBA from the University of Memphis.

ERICA MCQUEEN

Erica has been the Human Resources Coordinator since August 2022. She joins us from the United States Air Force where she managed the Official Mail Center at the Scot Air Force Base. She has extensive supervisory and support experience in the USAF staffing and administration policies. Erica has an Associates degree in Business Administration.

TAYLOR “ALEX” HARGETT, MBA

Alex joined the Department in November 2022 as an Adminstrative Associate IV. She gained significant experience in her previous adminstrative assistant role at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital and also provided support for our UTHSC Division of Pediatric Surgery and its day-to-day administrative operations, assistance for the pediatric surgery fellowship programs and various faculty projects. Alex’s primary role will be to serve as Administrative Assistant to the Department Chair, Dr. Shibata. She received both her Bachelor’s in Health Sciences and MBA from the University of Memphis.

GORDON BOWEN

Business Manager in the General Surgery Department since September 2022.

Gordon’s previous role was as a Financial Analyst for the Shelby County government where he handled complex financial actions and budgets. Prior to that, he worked in the financial sector analyzing funds and providing client support. Gordon brings expert financial analysis, cost accounting, valuation, and predictive modeling skills to the team. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance and is currently working on his MBA at the University of Memphis.

TRINICA COLLINS

Serves as Financial Coordinator for the Department of Surgery since July 2022. Trinica has 8+ years of experience at UTHSC in the Procurement office and in Animal Care. She has extensive experience with our IRIS system, and accounting procedures and protocols. Trinica has a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and is working on her MBA.

YOLANDA ADAMS

Administrative Associate III in the Divisions of Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery since May 2022. Yolanda previously served as a Clinical Assistant to University Clinical Health Psychiatry and has 15 years of clinical experience before coming into administration. Yolanda is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration. The Brownsville, TN native by way of Waukegan, IL is happy to begin the next chapter of her career with the Department of Surgery!

In August, the Department of Surgery welcomed Cherisse Berry, MD, FACS, associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Acute Care Surgery at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, as the UTHSC Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Visiting Professor She presented on the topic, “Disparitites in the Surgical Workforce: Are Institutions Ready for Diversity?”

JESSICA J. KANDEL, MD

In mid-September, Jessica Kandel, MD, the Mary Campau Ryerson Professor of Surgery, and Surgeon-in-Chief at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and Biological Sciences, served as the UTHSC Women in Surgery Visiting Professor She lectured on the topic, “Imposter Syndrome.”

JAMES H. HORNER, MD VISITING PROFESSOR SYMPOSIUM

James H. Horner was a medical student who died shortly before his expected graduation from UTHSC. His medical degree was awarded posthumously in June 1988, and Dr. Horner’s family established this distinguished professorship “to promote education, compassion, and academic excellence in the practice of medicine.” The Department of Surgery hosted the event.

Expert speakers discussed collaborative approaches to decreasing community violence. The event was held October 28 at the Hamilton Eye Institute-Freeman Auditorium. Andrew Kerwin, MD, FACS, DABS, Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Division Chief, Professor of Surgery, spoke on the topic, “Data on Firearm Injuries in Adults,” while Regan Williams, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP, Associate Professor, Division of Pediatrics Surgery, delivered a lecture on, “Data on Firearm Injuries in Children.”

Rochelle Dicker, MD, Professor of Surgery and Anesthesia and Trauma Medical Director at UCLA, served as the James Horner, MD Distinguished Visiting Professor and presented a lecture entitled, “Healthcare Strategies to Reduce Firearm Injury.”

UPCOMING VISITING LECTURERS

OLAMIDE ALABI, MD, FACS

Dr. Alabi will serve as an Invited Grand Rounds Lecturer in Vascular Surgery on January 11, 2023. Alabi is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine and Director of Endovascular Services at the Atlanta VA Medical Center.

SHERRY WREN, MD, FACS, FCS(ECSA), FISS

Dr. Wren will serve as the UTHSC GSI Visiting Professor on April 19, 2023. Wren is the vice-chair and Professor of Surgery, Director of Global Surgery, Center for Innovation in Global Health at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the Director of Clinical Surgery at Palo Alto Veterans Health Care System.

WAYNE FREDERICK, MD, FACS, MBA

Dr. Fredrick will serve as the UTHSC AOA Distinguished Visiting Professor on April 26, 2023. Frederick is the President of Howard University in Washington, D.C. and is the distinguished Charles R. Drew Endowed Chair of Surgery.

The UTHSC College of Medicine Department of Surgery held its networking reception in conjunction with the 2022 American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress in October in San Diego, CA. Faculty, current students, staff and alumni were all invited to the annual reception.

TN-ACS STATE MEETINGS CMGH

The Tennessee Chapter of American College of Surgeons (TN-ACS) annual meeting was held August 11-14 at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel in Nashville, TN.

The UTHSC Department of Surgery faculty held various positions on the 2021-2022 TN-ACS Board of Directors: Max Langham, Jr., MD, FACS as current President, Alex Feliz, MD, FACS, Ankush Gosain, MD, PHD, FACS, FAAP, Denis A. Foretia, MD, MPH, MBA, FACS, all served as At-Large Directors-West, Martin Fleming, MD, FACS, as Governor at Large, James “Trey” Eubanks, MD, FACS, as Advocacy Insider. Jeremiah Deneve, DO, FACS was the Young Fellows Representative and Andrew Fleming, MD, was Resident Representative.

TN TRAUMA SYMPOSIUM

The one-day Tennessee Trauma Symposium was held on Thursday, August 11.

Emily Lenart, DO, delivered the opening lecture entitled, “Trauma Care and PTSD.” She was followed by James “Trey” Eubanks, MD, FACS, who discussed, “Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) in children.

Peter Fischer, MD, FACS, presented on the topic, “Field Triage Guidelines 2022.”

During the Trauma Paper compeition, Andrew Fleming, MD took second place for his paper entitited, “Cryoprecipitate use during massive transfusion: A propensity score analysis.”

TN-ACS ANNUAL MEETING

At the TN-ACS conference, Max Langham, Jr., MD, FACS, Professor of Surgery Emeritus, Department of Surgery, UTHSC provided the welcome address in his role as president on Friday, August 12. On Saturday, Langham moderated the panel topic, “Overcoming health outcome disparities: a community approach,” while Nia Zalamea, MD, FACS served as an expert panelist.

During the Resident Presentations session, Andrew Fleming, MD, was awarded First Place in the Basic Science and Clinical Science Paper Competition for his paper, “Identification of Candidate Resistance Mechanisms in Favorable-Histology Wilms Tumor.”

David Shibata, MD, FACS, FSSO, FASCRS was elected Vice-President at the TN-ACS Annual Business Meeting.

SYMPOSIUM

The second annual Center for Multicultural and Global Health symposium followed the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) conference theme, “Healthy People, Healthy Planet, Social Justice”. It was held November 11-12 at the Mooney Building.

The symposium, directed by Dr. Denis Foretia, featured Sudha Jayaraman, MD, MSC, FACS, Director of the Center for Global Surgery at the University of Utah and featured three panel discussions and a trainee presentation.

SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

SYMPOSIUM

The UTHSC Division of Surgical Oncology hosted a one-day symposium on the topic, “Updates in the Multidisciplinary Management of Endocrine Tumors,” on October 1 at the Mooney Building. The purpose of the event was to educate healthcare providers on up-todate strategies for the evaluation and management of patients with thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal neoplasms. The symposium, led by Dr. Paxton Dickson, provided an opportunity for clinicians involved in the care of these patients to learn from and interact with leading national and local faculty to increase clinical knowledge, apply new data into practice and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE

HERBERT SHAINBERG SCHOLARS

The UTHSC Global Surgery Institute has launched the Herbert Shainberg Scholars Multicultural Health Exchange Program with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The newest cohort includes: Aditya Shah, Johan Ananthraj, Monica Ogunsusi and Steven Laxton. This program will provide students with the unique opportunity and the funding to travel to Ben-Gurion University of the Negev for a single four-week rotation, or (2) two-week rotations. In addition, the student will have the opportunity to participate in the extensive multicultural health and global health programming at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. GLOBAL SURGERY INSTITUTE RESIDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The GSI is pleased to announce the 2023 GSI Resident Scholars: Dr. Aubrey Schacter PGY-2 Resident, Dr. Michael Wright PGY-2 Resident and Dr. Clarisse Muenyi PGY-4 Chief Resident. The scholarships provide funds to cover expenses associated with mission travel. Drs. Schacter, Wright and Muenyi will travel to Carmona Cavite, Philippines in February 2023 (see below).

CMGH SEMINAR HELD

CMGH held its first research seminar on July 27. Bregje de Koh, M.D., Assistant Professor of Health, Care and the Body Team, at Utrecht University and University of Amsterdam delivered the lecture, “Justice in global health research: A social science perspective.”

COSECSA AND NAMIBIAN SURGICAL SOCIETY INVITE

The 22nd College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) and the Nambian Surgical Society (NSS) was held Dec. 5-9 in Nambia. Dr. Denis Foretia and Dr. Nia Zalamea attended the conference. Dr. Zalamea was invited to teach a laparoscopy course and had an abstract presented at COSECA.

UPCOMING MISSIONS

Nia Zalamea, MD, Olivia Delozier, MD, Martin Fleming, MD and a 30-person team, in conjunction with a local organization will travel to Carmona, Cavite, Philippines to provide surgical services including thyroidectomy, hernia repair, cleft lip and palate repairs on February 18-25, 2023.

DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY WELCOMES SURGEONS FROM UKRAINE

In late July and early August, a delegation of Ukrainian surgeons visited UTHSC and Regional One Health to learn about best practices for treating trauma and burn injuries.

Ram Velamuri, MD, medical director of the Firefighters Burn Center and Andrew Kerwin, MD, Chief of Trauma at the Elvis Presley Trauma Center, shared their knowledge and expertise to help the Ukrainian physicians provide the best possible care for their patients. The visit was coordinated through Friendship Force Memphis and Open World Leadership.

In addition, the delegation was welcomed at Department of Surgery Grand Rounds and had an opportunity to formally present their experience at a roundtable with the department’s faculty and members of the UTHSC Global Surgery Institute.

The UTHSC Department of Surgery has been active in relief efforts to Ukraine and recently participated in a large shipment of two 40-foot containers of medical, surgical and hospital supplies to aid in Ukrainian relief efforts.

UTHSC’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

FULFILLING A LIFELONG DREAM

Paxton V. Dickson, MD

Dr. Brian Brewer, class of 2010, has known he wanted to become a physician since elementary school. He vividly recalls the response of his sixth grade teacher after telling her he was going to be a doctor, “Well then, go sit down and study.”

In the eighth grade, his parents bought him a basketball goal and he asked them to return it and get him a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope. He notes that this is when they really started to take his plans seriously and began to engage him in activities geared toward planning for college and medical school. Having grown up in North Little Rock, Arkansas, he was able to participate in summer programs at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) throughout high school. During the summer following his 11th grade year, he observed the trauma response teams at UAMS and knew that he wanted to become a trauma surgeon.

Following undergraduate studies at Hendrix College in Conway, AR, he went on to attend medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. He was well aware of the strength of the trauma program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and thus set his sights on its surgical residency. Dr. Brewer successfully matched at UTHSC and began his surgical internship in 2005. In 2010, he became the second black resident to graduate from the general surgery program at UTHSC. Dr. Brewer states that he felt well received during his residency in Memphis, but is glad to know that the program has placed an increased emphasis on diversity and inclusion in recent years.

When asked to comment on his training in Memphis, Dr. Brewer said, “I have always felt clinically prepared. From a trauma standpoint, there is never a hesitation. I think having that autonomy and having people that trust your judgement at a place like Memphis, it’s very important in building confidence. I feel clinically strong. My training over a decade ago is applicable today. I can get through most things with that training and applying new principles here and there.”

Following his time in Memphis, Dr. Brewer went on to complete his trauma and surgical critical care fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. It was during that time he came under the tutelage of Dr. Grace Rozycki, who he credits for helping to push his post-training career forward and, to this day, she continues to be a friend and mentor. Dr. Rozycki subsequently asked him to join the Indiana University School of Medicine as the Chief of Surgery at

IU Health Methodist Hospital, and he became one of her first recruits to join the faculty in the Division of Trauma/ Critical Care. During his eight years at Indiana, he was part of a group that helped establish the first surgical intensive care unit at the institution, where he would also become the Medical Director for Surgical Critical Care. During that time, he began to develop an interest in hospital leadership and operations and went on to obtain his MBA from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

In his relatively short career, Dr. Brewer has become a leader in trauma at both the local and national level. He has been an active member within the national trauma surgery societies; serving on the Injury Prevention and Career Development Committees of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and on the Healthcare Economic Committee for the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He has taught several courses both nationally and internationally on ultrasound for surgeons, including the FAST course for the American College of Surgeons. He has also been invited to speak at and lead career development courses, recently moderating a town hall on “Conflict and Negotiation” at this year’s American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in San Diego, CA.

In addition to a busy clinical practice, Dr. Brewer has remained involved in community service. He is on the Board of Directors at Resources of Hope, an organization aimed at providing resources to meet the physical and emotional needs of foster children. He has also been involved as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters. In his free time, he enjoys traveling saying that his two favorite cities to visit are Sydney, Australia and Barcelona, Spain.

UTHSC’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT CONT.

This year, Dr. Brewer was recruited to become the Chief of Trauma at HCA Houston Clearlake Hospital, where he has been tasked with leading the efforts to transition from a level 2 to a level 1 trauma center that services the Gulf Coast region located southeast of Houston, TX. He is enjoying being back in the South and closer to family as well as the challenges of this new position. Dr. Brewer said he is very thankful for the training he received in Memphis and for the foundation it provided for pursuing a career in trauma surgery and critical care.

Certainly, Dr. Brewer and his successes are a significant credit to the general surgery residency at UTHSC.

ZALAMEA AND TEAM HELPS OTHERS IN NEED

Nia Zalamea, MD, FACS, assistant professor of general surgery, director of the UTHSC Global Surgery Institute, and associate director of the UTHSC Center for Multicultural and Global Health, has done medical mission work in the Philippines since 1999 with her family foundation, the Memphis Mission of Mercy, a nonprofit to provide health care in her parents’ home country of the Philippines.

However, when Dr. Zalamea and this organization saw a need across the globe, they stepped up.

Last summer, the Memphis Mission of Mercy sent 18 tons of hospital supplies, surgical instruments, blankets, stretchers, and other equipment to surgeon partners in Ukraine.

For years, the Memphis Mission of Mercy has been collecting medical supplies and equipment for a hospital it plans to build in the Philippines. The supplies were stored in a 5,000-square-foot warehouse in South Memphis.

“We had a meeting, and we decided we have to give everything, including operating tables, because they don’t have anything,” Dr. Zalamea said at the time. The shipment would include 100-plus pallets or 18 tons of supplies.

“We have the supplies and COVID has delayed building the hospital,” Dr. Zalamea said. “It’s really hard to say, ‘we are holding on to this for a hospital that’s not yet built.’ “

Dr. Zalamea recounted the meeting during which the altruistic decision was made.

“One of our board members reflected, ‘it’s funny, we have been spending the last 10 years preparing for a particular moment in time when we might be able to fill a mission hospital (in the Philippines) with all these supplies, and that day perhaps is to come. But perhaps the Lord has actually been preparing us for this moment instead, with this need before us, and we happen to have an answer to that need.’”

Memphis Mission of Mercy worked with Nova Ukraine to help ship the equipment, which carried more than $100,000 in shipping costs, and took months to iron out. The group had already sent supplies, including an anesthesia machine, to partners In Ukraine in Spring 2022.

This time, the supplies and equipment, supplemented by supplies from the Department of Surgery at UTHSC, were packed into containers in late June and left Memphis on the Fourth of July. They traveled by rail to the coast, then were loaded onto a cargo ship bound for Germany, then over land through Poland, then finally arrived in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, on September 2. The containers were received at the warehouse of Nova Ukraine, unloaded, and the hospital beds, stretchers, surgical instruments, wound care supplies, tourniquets, etc., were quickly distributed by trucks to the hospitals that needed them and to the front-line workers waiting for them.

A second shipment was sent through Nova Ukraine of supplies from the mission and the Department of Surgery, including additional surgical supplies, airway supplies and disposables, as well as such things as OR sinks, OR booms, OR lights and operating microscopes. Hospital partner Regional One Health donated a dermatome for this shipment as well. The content of the second shipment was assembled with the help of Ukrainian surgeon partners, who visited UTHSC in late July.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT CONT.

Memphis Mission of Mercy has not given up its intention for a hospital in the Philippines. Recently, Dr. Zalamea traveled to Pagamutang Bayan Ng Hospital Carmona and Ospital Ng Maynila Medical Center in Manila in preparation for upcoming work there in February and October of 2023.

For her two decades of service with the Memphis Mission of Mercy; her efforts as a surgeon, an educator and a mentor of future physicians; and her dedication to health and health care locally and around the globe, Dr. Zalamea was honored with a 2022 SPARK Award in December.

NEW FACULTY PLASTIC/RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

Robin J. Evans, BSc, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Evans will join the University of Tennesse Health Science Center as an Assistant Professor, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was an attending surgeon in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, CA. He graduated with a medical degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and is board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery by the Royal College of Physicans and Surgeons. Evans completed his general surgery residency at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada. His surgical training includes a clinical fellowship in pediatric plastic surgery at BC Children’s Hospital, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Bristish Columbia, Canada.

HEALTH CARE HONOR

David Shibata, MD, Andy Kerwin, MD and Peter Fischer, MD were congratulated for their efforts in leading Regional One Health in being honored by The American College of Surgeons for achieving top 10% meritorious outcomes for adult inpatient and outpatient surgical care in 2021. Fellow in Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Kumar attended Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine-Temple for medical school and went to UT Houston, McGovern Medical School for her general surgery residency program.

WILLIAMS NOTED FOR WORK IN PEDIATRIC TRAUMA SURGERY

Dr. Regan Williams, Associate Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was featured in a diversity and inclusion presentation on women pediatric surgery leaders at the 8th Annual Pediatric Trauma Society conference in November held in Portland, Oregon. The Pediatric Trauma Society (PTS) is a professional organization for all healthcare providers interested in improving outcomes for injured children through development of optimal care guidelines, education, research and advocacy. ANDREW FLEMING, MD

Research Resident, General Surgery, won the award for Best Basic Research Presentation at the 11th International Pediatric Renal Tumour Biology Conference in Marseille, France in September 2022 for his work entitled, “Identification of Candidate Resistance Mechanisms in Favorable-Histology Wilms Tumor.” The conference is organized every 2-3 years hosting international experts in the fields of research and therapeutic management (of pediatric renal tumors).

Dr. Fleming was also the recipient of the presitigious Jens Rosenkrantz Resident Research Award during the 75th Annual AAP Section on Surgery meeting in Anaheim, CA in October 2022. He won in the clinical science category for his presentation entitled, “Aggressive Pursuit of No Evidence of Disease Status in Hepatoblastoma Improves Survival.” The awards are given in the categories of Basic Science, Clinical Science, DEI and Poster and determined by the AAP Section of Surgery Program and Publications Committee.

URM VISITING STUDENT NAMED

Edwina W. Smith was selected as this year’s Underrepresented in Medicine (URM) Visiting Student in Surgery. Smith graduated from State University in New York. She is a 4th year student and doctor of medicine candidate at Mercer University School of Medicine.

The URM Visiting Student in Surgery is sponsored by UTHSC and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. This visiting clerkship program allows students to experience general surgery training at UTHSC.
