SURGERY NEWS MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. Undoubtedly, 2020 was a year of enormous challenges ranging from a global pandemic, national political and social strife and even institutional uncertainties at our local level.

We have certainly all been deeply affected in our own ways. Through it all, I have been extraordinarily proud of how members of the Department of Surgery have been unified in adapting to the many “new normals” whether it be with respect to their personal lives, social responsibility, patient care and/or education. I am thankful to all faculty and residents but in particular, to Dr. Alex Feliz, Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery and Program Director of the General Surgery residency and Ms. Cynthia Tooley, Residency Coordinator for making our completely virtual residency interview season a success. We had a record number of applicants and interviewed many outstanding candidates. Once again, we are very much looking forward to this year’s match. In the midst of these times, the Department of Surgery continues to grow and in this issue’s Faculty Spotlight, we are pleased to introduce you to Dr. Andrew J. Kerwin, Professor and new Chief of the Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care. As we enter 2021, we have glimmers of hope including the potential for renewed national stability, the dissemination of COVID-19 vaccines and the anticipation of all being able to gather together again. AWARDS AND KUDOS MATTHEW DAVIS, MD, FACS
Matthew Davis, MD, FACS, assistant professor, Division of General Surgery, Section of Bariatric Surgery, is co-investigator on a recently awarded National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 Research Grant (Principal Investigator: Liza Makowski, PhD) entitled, “Role of microbialmodulated bile acid receptor signaling in breast cancer.” The proposed project will examine the role of obesity and weight loss-mediated changes in microbially-modified metabolites in breast cancer. Dr. Davis also received his FACS designation at the virtual American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress virtual ceremony in the fall.
JEREMIAH DENEVE, DO, FACS Jeremiah Deneve, DO, associate professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, named UTHSC institutional principal investigator for the national Southwestern Oncology Group (SWOG) clinical trials organization. Led by Dr. Deneve, UTHSC was the top accruing site in the nation for SWOG trial #S1316 “Prospective Comparative Effectiveness Trial for Malignant Bowel Obstruction”.
TREY EUBANKS, MD, FACS Trey Eubanks, MD, FACS, professor, chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was awarded the 2020 Joseph Weinberg, MD Leadership Award at the Children’s Emergency Care Alliance of Tennessee (CECA-TN). This award is bestowed upon an individual who displays the attributes of a leader that can bring together diverse stakeholders and organizations to improve the care of critically ill and injured children.
MARTIN FLEMING, MD, FACS Martin Fleming, MD, FACS, professor and chief, Division of Surgical Oncology, was appointed as the Governor for West Tennessee to the America College of Surgeons Board of Governors. As part of his responsibilities, he will also serve on the Board of Governors Chapter Activities International Workgroup.
ASHLEY HENDRIX, MD Ashley Hendrix, MD, assistant professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, has been appointed to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) expert panel, “Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Breast, Ovarian, and Pancreatic”. In addition, she successfully completed the Diversity Certificate program through UTHSC Office for Equity and Diversity.
THOMAS NG, MD, FRCSC, FACS Thomas Ng, MD, FRCSC, FACS, professor and chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery, was the recipient of the Outstanding Editorial Board Member Award from the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, in December 2020. He was also appointed editor of the Feature Section for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Lastly, Dr. Ng was appointed to the NCCN’s expert panel, “NonSmall Cell Lung Cancer, Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma and Thymomas/Thymic Carcinomas”.
DAVID SHIBATA, MD, FACS, FASCRS David Shibata, MD, FACS, FASCRS, Harwell Wilson Alumni Endowed Chair, was selected to serve as an expert panelist for the Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer (EO-CRC) Think Tank, which is part of the National Institutes of Health and supported by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The two-day meeting aimed to bring together national experts from inter-disciplinary fields to identify research priorities, barriers, and potential solutions surrounding early-onset colorectal cancer. Dr. Shibata spoke regarding the biological mechanisms of early-onset colorectal cancer. Dr. Shibata directs a Hereditary and High-Risk Colorectal Cancer Clinic that provides treatment and support for patients affected by this disease.
REGAN WILLIAMS, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP Regan Williams, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP, associate professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was featured several times in the Daily Memphian for her work on gun violence. Her op-ed titled, “We need to stop gun violence against children,” was featured in November. In December, she was featured in the article, “New program helps kids with trauma of COVID-19, violence,” where they discuss that all children treated at Le Bonheur’s Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center will be eligible for free mental health counseling services that began January 2021. 3

Dr. Wood attended Duke University for her undergraduate degree and University of Cincinnati for her medical degree. After medical school, she completed her General Surgery residency at Loyola University. She went on to complete a colorectal fellowship at Henry Ford Health System.

Dr. Byerly received a master of science degree in Mathematics at Northwestern University and her medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine-USC. Associate Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Pryor attended the University of Miami for his undergraduate degree. He completed his medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed his general surgery residency at George Washington University, which included a three-year surgical research fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He received his surgical training in Pediatric Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Following fellowship, Dr. Pryor served on active duty in the United States Navy. He served as the chief of Pediatric Surgery, chairman of the General Surgery Clinical Competency Committee, and deputy director of Surgical Services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Dr. Pryor left active duty in August 2019, and completed a oneyear fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at the R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Professor, Division of Vascular Surgery. Dr. Mitchell completed her medical degree at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. After medical school, she completed her general surgery residency at the University of Colorado. She went on to complete a vascular and interventional radiology fellowship at the University of Colorado and a vascular surgery fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University. Dr. Mitchell is a nationally recognized authority in vascular surgery and has previously served as Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair for Quality, Department of Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University and also as Medical Director of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Salem Health.

INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE THE GLOBAL SURGERY INSTITUTE LAUNCHED COVID-19 AND SURGERY CONVERSATIONS SERIES The Global Surgery Institute recently launched a monthly series of conversations with surgeons from all over the world. The surgeons will share their individual and institutional experiences with COVID-19. GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVES IN CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY: ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND GUIDELINES AS SEEN IN THE JOURNAL OF THORACIC AND CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY
William Novick, MD, along with other physicians, wrote an article on globabl health initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery. The paper discussed worldwide inequalities in the availability of health care, cardiothoracic surgical global health initiatives can benefit all involved, and that ethical standards are needed. UTHSC GROWS ACADEMIC, CLINICAL FOOTPRINT OVERSEAS WITH PARTNERSHIP WITH TEACHING HOSPITAL IN ZAMBIA AS SEEN ON THE UTHSC WEBSITE
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has signed a memorandum of understanding with a major teaching hospital in the capital city of Zambia to create an academic, clinical, and research partnership. Denis Foretia, MD, MBA, MPH, an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at UTHSC, said the affiliation between UTHSC and Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU), a university hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, allows the institutions to undertake a partnership in clinical care delivery; in teaching medical, nursing, pharmacy, and other health care students; and in research. THE ASSOCIATION OF ACADEMIC GLOBAL SURGERY This novel organization is sponsored by the American College of Surgeons Operation Giving Back and aims to establish academic approaches in global surgery to reduce surgical health care inequity worldwide. The initial membership is composed of over 115 primary members, and over 70 Candidate/Resident members, with the majority from North America. Our GSI partners in the Philippines and Honduras are also invited to join. This is an international organization where partners from all over the world are continued to be invited. Between the ENT colleagues and the Department of Surgery, there are a total of 9 founding members from the UTHSC family. Denis Foretia, MD, MBA, MPH, assistant professor, Division of General Surgery, was elected to the Ethics Committee; Ying Weatherall, MD, FACS, FAAP, assistant professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was elected to the Diversity, Inclusion, and Membership Committee; and Nia Zalamea, MD, FACS, assistant professor, Division of General Surgery, recently completed her two-year stint as the chair of the Rules and Regulations Committee and will transition to be co-lead of the Ethics Committee. 6

NEW TRAUMA/SURGICAL CRITICAL CARE CHIEF AIMS TO BUILD ON LEGACY OF FORMER LEADERS Peggy Reisser, Communications Manager
If Andrew Kerwin, MD, FACS, DABS, experiences déjà vu as he comes to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center to join the faculty of the College of Medicine, it’s because he trained at the university more than two decades ago. Now, however, he comes as the chief of the division in which he trained, instead of as a fellow. Dr. Kerwin is the new chief of the Division of Trauma/ Surgical Critical Care at UTHSC. He is also the Surgical Quality Officer at Regional One Health and the chief of Trauma at the Elvis Presley Trauma Center there. Dr. Kerwin says his time as a fellow at UTHSC influenced his decision to return. He believes he was fortunate to learn from the “pioneers” of the UTHSC Trauma/Surgical Critical Care program. Specifically, he points to Timothy C. Fabian, MD, former professor and chair of the UTHSC Department of Surgery, who started the trauma program in the early ‘80s and organized and developed The Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center at Regional One Health, now one of the highest-volume trauma centers in the United States. Dr. Kerwin also mentions Martin Croce, MD, the senior vice president and chief medical officer at Regional One Health, as well as a professor of surgery and the former chief of the Division Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at UTHSC. Dr. Kerwin is proud to follow in the footsteps of these physicians he considers role models. a Level 1 Trauma Center and one of the busiest in Florida.
“They really pioneered trauma care,” Dr. Kerwin says. “They set the standard of trauma care, and so when I looked at the opportunity of coming here, to be able to take over and lead after they had done all this and established this legacy and to be able to enhance the pioneering care that they’ve done over the years was really appealing to me.”
Dr. Kerwin graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield in 1992, completed an internship at Loyola University Medical Center in 1993, and did his surgical residency at Medical College of Ohio. In 1997, he did his fellowship at UTHSC. Dr. Kerwin is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care.
Dr. Kerwin previously served as the division chief of Acute Care Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine- Jacksonville, as well as the associate chair of the Department of Surgery and the Trauma Medical Director of UF Health Jacksonville,

“It is part of that adrenaline rush thing, and it’s always different,” he says. “And there’s a good deal of emotion involved in it, bonding with some of these patients and the families, taking them when they’re really having their worst day ever and having a chance to really provide high-quality care and getting them back to being restored to doing the things that they were doing before. It gives you a great deal of joy to see that happen and to know that you’re doing good work for the community.”

His lecture was titled, “Using a clinical registry to improve care...and the bottom line”.

Dr. Kerwin is active in several national organizations. His clinical interests include multi-system trauma, massive transfusion protocols and pediatric trauma. His research interests include patient outcomes, splenic injuries, management of cervical spinal cord injuries and nosocomial pneumonia.
Professor, Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in October 2020. His lecture was titled, “Enhanced Recovery in Thoracic Surgery”.
Dr. Kerwin and his wife, Tammy, an ultrasonographer, have twin sons (born in Memphis during Dr. Kerwin’s fellowship), and a daughter.
Bridget Fahy, MD, FACS Professor of Surgery and Chief, Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in December 2020. Her lecture was titled, “Palliative Care = Good Surgical Care”.
In addition to continuing to build the strong, cohesive, and collegial team in his division, Dr. Kerwin says he will focus on mentoring the newer faculty members on his team. He says he will also “look for any opportunities to continue to enhance the pioneering roots that were laid by Dr. Croce and Dr. Fabian and to enhance the national and international reputation of the program.” “We are thrilled to have been able to recruit Dr. Kerwin back to Memphis. In addition to his strong leadership skills and national reputation, he approaches his work with a commitment to excellence, quality and professionalism. JAMES W. PATE, MD IN MEMORIAM It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of James W. Pate, MD, on January 31, 2021 from complications related to COVID-19. Dr. Pate served as chair of the UTHSC Department of Surgery from 1974-1989. He was born in Wedowee, Alabama on Aug. 28, 1928. He took his premedical education at Emory University in Atlanta and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1950. He entered the U.S. Navy and completed a rotating internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland from June 1950July 1951, at which time he began a general surgery residency at the same institution. While serving the first two years of his general surgery residency, he also headed the Division of Experimental Surgery at the National Naval Medical Center from July 1952 through July 1953. While there, he helped to develop the freeze-dried process for preserving arteries to use as grafts and proved the practicality of this process with combat-wounded casualties during the Korean War. He was also the codiscoverer of the bioelectrical causes of blood clots in arteries and veins. He completed two additional years of general surgery residency from 1953-55 at the Medical College of Alabama as well as two further years (1955-57) of residency in thoracic surgery at the Veterans Administration Medical Teaching Group in Memphis. He began his career in Memphis in 1957 as the assistant chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Veterans Hospital. He joined our faculty as an assistant professor of surgery and rapidly rose to become professor of surgery in 1965. His contributions to literature and his innovative ideas have shaped the way surgeons now perform current operations in cardiovascular surgery. He was a national leader in developing new techniques for open heart surgery, including being the first surgeon in the country to replace a heart valve with an artificial valve in pediatric patients. He was also the first surgeon in the country to replace a heart valve and implant a pacemaker for emergency surgery, following a gunshot wound of the heart. In 1982, Dr. Pate was honored for outstanding and distinguished public service and received awards from the medical staff at the City of Memphis Hospital for his efforts in training general and thoracic surgical residents, his leadership in establishing surgical intensive care for the region and his development of cardiovascular surgery and training. He has authored over 125 papers for scientific journals, co-authored Science of Surgery and contributed chapters to several surgery textbooks. During his tenure as chairman, he was able to consolidate two local hospital-based surgical residency programs into the University of Tennessee program. He expanded the number of residents a year from four to eight. He obtained commitment from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, Shelby County and the State of Tennessee to build a trauma center that would be staffed by university surgeons. He has been a member of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Accreditation Committee on Graduate Medical Education, president of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and a founding member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He was honored as a distinguished university professor for the Department of Surgery. His extraordinary contributions and remarkable continued involvement in the UTHSC Department of Surgery and College of Medicine will be terribly missed.
