Welcome to the Spring 2025 edition of the Department of Surgery newsletter.
With the advent of spring comes the annual rite of Residency Match Day and we are delighted to welcome yet another stellar class of incoming PGY1 residents. We are pleased to introduce you to them in the pages herein. Also, please be sure to take the opportunity to meet them at the Annual New Residents Welcome event at Top Golf Memphis on June 28, 2025. Thank you as usual to Dr. Alexander Feliz, Program Director and Ms. Cynthia Tooley, Program Coordinator for organizing our entire interview season. We would like to extend our gratitude to the faculty members who served as interviewers for our applicants.
We recently had the honor of hosting Dr. Marion Henry, Professor of Surgery, University of Chicago as our annual Association of Women Surgeons Visiting Professor. Dr. Henry spoke passionately on the topic of pediatric surgery advocacy. Coincidentally, one of the most recent recruits to the Division of Pediatric Surgery is Dr. Saunders Lin who trained in pediatric surgery under Dr. Henry at the University of Chicago. Dr. Lin is himself, an emerging expert in advocacy, health policy and public health research. We are pleased to welcome him, and he is featured in this edition’s Faculty Spotlight.
Please be sure to save the date for the annual highlight of our academic year, the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society/Department of Surgery Research Symposium and Graduation Banquet taking place on Friday, June 13, 2025. We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Kelly Hunt as the HWSS Distinguished Visiting Professor. A UT Health Science Center College of Medicine alumnus, she currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Breast Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
In closing, I would like to express my strongest appreciation for the entire Department of Surgery including our staff, residents, fellows and faculty members as the nation faces significant financial uncertainties in hospital payments and medical research funding. I am proud that all of you remain steadfast and dedicated to achieving our missions of outstanding teaching, research and patient care. Thank you for all that you do and wishing everyone a great summer.
Sincerely,
David Shibata, MD, FACS, FASCRS Harwell Wilson Alumni Endowed Chair in Surgery Professor and
