FACULTY AND STAFF

SURGICAL ONCOLOGY SYMPOSIUM

MCDANIEL RETIRES CARTER MCDANIEL, MD

The UTHSC Division of Surgical Oncology hosted its annual oneday symposium on the topic, “The State of the Art Management of Colorectal Cancer,” on September 30 in the UTHSC Mooney Building Library. The purpose of the event was to educate healthcare providers on up-todate strategies for the evaluation and managment of patients with localized and metastaic colorectal cancer.

Justin Monroe, MD The UTHSC Department of Surgery bids farewell to Dr. Carter E. McDaniel as he retires after over three decades of service to Memphis and the surrounding region. Dr. McDaniel, a longtime fixture in the local medical community, is a lifelong Memphian. He graduated from Whitehaven High School in 1972 and went on to study chemistry at Memphis State University. From there, in 1978, he began medical school in Memphis. After graduation, he started surgery residency with the Methodist Hospital system. Once he completed residency, Dr. McDaniel joined Memphis Surgery Associates in 1989, one of the premier private practice groups in the city.

The symposium, led by Dr. Paxton Dickson, Associate Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, provided an opportunity for clinicians involved in the care of these patients to learn from and interact with leading national and local experts. Dr. David Shibata, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery, delivered a lecture entitled, “Watch and Wait - Where are we in 2023?”, while Dr. Ian Solsky, Assistant Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, presented on the topic, “CRS & HIPEC in Colorectal Cancer Indications and Outcomes.”

He had a robust general and vascular surgery practice and was part of the University of Tennessee teaching faculty. No matter how busy he was, he always made himself available to help. Many residents over the years could tell stories of Dr. McDaniel coming in to help them in the middle of the night, even when he wasn’t on call, and making a quick run over to Tops Bar-BQ when time allowed.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

In 2018, Dr. McDaniel transitioned to the VA Memphis where he could further pursue his passion of teaching surgery residents. Throughout his many years of service to the community, Dr. McDaniel dedicated himself to bettering the lives of his patients and was a true role model to medical students and residents alike.

Nabajit Choudhury, Assistant Professor, Division of Trauma/ Surgical Critical Care, and his son, Jagreet, participated in the annual Big Dam Bridge 100 Cycling Tour held Sept. 23 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Together, they raised $1,209.84 from 15 donors on behalf of the Regional One Health Foundation.

He now looks forward to spending more time with Judy, his wife of 46 years, there four children and seven grandchildren, and he is still good for a run to Tops every now and then.

“It was a great feeling for both of us to be able to raise the money and support the cause of ROH to serve the needy in the community,” Dr. Choudhury said. “My son is engaged in fundraising musical/orchestra shows organized through family and friends. This was an opportunity for him to support the place where I work and inculcate in him the importance of giving back to the

community.”

Next year’s event is set for Sept. 28.

WINTER 2023

UTHSC’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY FACULTY SPOTLIGHT CARING FOR CANCER PATIENTS Ian Solsky, MD, MPH to serve as leader of the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy program.

Brenda Young, Marketing and Communications Associate A promising surgeon-investigator, Dr. Ian Solsky has been recruited into the Division of Surgical Oncology to lead the Peritoneal Surface Malignancies Program which offers advanced treatment options for patients with cancers that have spread to the lining or peritoneum of the abdominal cavity and the surface of its organs. Specialized surgical treatments include cytoreduction and Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). Dr. Solsky most recently completed training as a fellow in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem, NC), one of the busiest and prominent HIPEC centers in the nation. A native of New Jersey, Dr. Solsky obtained an undergraduate degree in English at Columbia University in New York and his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ. Dr. Solsky subsequently completed a general surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. Tumors with a pattern spread to the abdominal lining are referred to as peritoneal surface malignancies and include colorectal, ovarian, appendiceal and gastric cancers among others. “My main clinical interest is managing these patients with peritoneal surface disease. Historically, there had been limited treatment options for such patients and it is very exciting that we now have a surgical option that can improve outcomes for these patients.” Dr. Solsky said. “I am looking forward to working with the Division of Surgical Oncology to expand this program. I hope to also be providing care to patients with other types of cancers including those of the GI tract and soft tissues, including sarcomas.”

Dr. Ian Solsky, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology. (Photo/Ian Solsky).

Dr. Solsky moved to Memphis with his wife, Dr. Kristina Quirolgico, sports medicine physiatrist who will also be practicing in the area. Drs. Solsky and Quirolgico have two children.

In addition to his clinical training, in 2018, Dr. Solsky received a Master’s in Public Health degree from the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University in Boston, MA. He has been part of a multidisciplinary research team that collected smartphone accelerometer activity data from cancer patients to develop novel recovery metrics after surgery. Dr. Solsky plans to bring this innovative line of research to UTHSC. “We are very excited to have Dr. Solsky joining the Division of Surgical Oncology at UTHSC. We interviewed many candidates from across the country for this position and are very pleased that he is now at UTHSC caring for cancer patients. He is a great addition to our team and the Memphis medical community.” said UTHSC Division of Surgical Oncology Division Chief, Dr. Martin Fleming.
