VANESSA HILL

ALEX COLON MOYA

Henderson Campus | Class of 2025 Chief, Spanish Pathway Program

South Jordan Campus | Class of 2024 Member, Spanish Pathway Program

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BE PART OF THE CVS HEALTH SPANISH PATHWAY PROGRAM? During my first week of pharmacy school, I quickly came to the realization that Spanish-speaking students were an underrepresented minority in the pharmacy field. This inspired me to apply to the SPP at Roseman. The program grants students the opportunity to expand inclusivity of Hispanic culture and traditions to the Roseman campus. As Nevada grows in diversity, it is important that future generations from Spanishspeaking communities are encouraged to pursue careers in healthcare. WHY DO YOU FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE A PART OF THE CVS HEALTH SPANISH PATHWAY PROGRAM? Once admitted into the program students have access to additional mentorship from Pathway faculty and become eligible for scholarships. SPP students are provided opportunities to stay connected with their community by participating in health screenings, education events, and vaccination clinics to underserved communities. It is important to continue the SPP’s mission of early introduction of diversity in the field of pharmacy, thereby providing role models to future generations.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE CVS HEALTH SPANISH PATHWAY PROGRAM? My favorite part of the SPP is spending time with the other Pathway students and faculty mentors in the program. I’ve enjoyed interacting with each of them outside the school and all of the activities we do together. DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE AS PART OF THE CVS HEALTH SPANISH PATHWAY PROGRAM? More than making a difference, I feel that I contribute a lot to the SPP and I have a feeling of belonging. WHAT WOULD YOU SHARE WITH A PHARMACY APPLICANT INTERESTED IN APPLYING TO BE A PART OF THE CVS HEALTH SPANISH PATHWAY PROGRAM? The best words I can think of are … If you want to make a change and contribute to the growth of pharmacists to better care for Hispanic/Latino communities, this is the program for you. If you want to be part of a team and receive mentorship from faculty who believe in you and give you the tools to be the best version of you, this is the program for you. It’s a once in a life opportunity. Do not miss your chance.

ROSEMAN UNIVERSITY STRIVES TO Produce competent graduates in an educational environment that ensures high levels of achievement from all students and fosters cooperation and collaboration in the learning process. This is the concept of mastery learning.

RAPHAEL ROQUE | PHARMD CLASS OF 2023 “My favorite facet is the Block Curriculum. By focusing on one concentrated area of study every two weeks allowed me to fully understand disease states and respective drugs. Recalling that information in real world application was easier as well.”

KIANNA BOC | PHARMD CLASS OF 2023 “Active & Collaborative Learning has been one of my favorite facets of the Six-Point Mastery Learning Model® because it allows me to collaborate with my peers, use critical thinking skills, and apply lessons from lectures on how to solve real patient cases that our professors bring to class.”

JUN-HONG (DANIEL) YANG | PHARMD CLASS OF 2024 “Removing traditional grades so that students focus on competency has made a more collaborative environment, where we would help each other with one goal: for all to be successful in the academics.”

MEHRI DOLATI | PHARMD CLASS OF 2024 “The Six-Point Mastery Learning Model® has impacted me as a student in a multitude of ways. Overall the structure feels like it is designed to get me engaged and help me retain the plethora of information that we must learn in order to pass our assessments and practice at the top of our license. I feel more apt to succeed in this teaching model than I did with a standard teacher and lecture hall dynamic.”

CADE THOMAS | PHARMD CLASS OF 2024 “As a student, I have really enjoyed the Early Experiential Learning aspect of Roseman’s educational model. Though being thrust into the real world of pharmacy early on was a scary experience, it has proven to be extremely valuable to me. Being able to associate real-life patients and experiences with the principles I’ve learned in class has really solidified the material in my mind.”

MEHREEN HASAN | PHARMD CLASS OF 2024 “My favorite facet of the model is Classroom as Teacher because the unique layout has made approaching the professors easier. This has helped me build some strong relationships with each of my professors and it has positively affected the way I learn and the way I have been performing academically.” P H A R M AC Y A D M I S S I O N S G U I D E : Ac ade m i c s

Making His Mark DR. LESLIE ASANGA Class of 2017, PharmD, MBA, MPH Dr. Leslie Asanga’s journey from the central African country of Cameroon to Roseman University College of Pharmacy to founding his own company is a remarkable story of resilience, innovation, and success.

Drawing inspiration from his grandmother, a nurse whose legacy of compassion and care fueled his desire to pursue a career in healthcare, Dr. Asanga chose to become a pharmacist. Roseman University was Dr. Asanga’s choice for his PharmD degree due to its unique three-year program, Six-Point Mastery Learning Model® and, at the time, the opportunity to earn an MBA alongside his PharmD degree. During his time at Roseman he was selected as part of the inaugural group of students for an internship at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. This experience allowed him to learn from top-tier pharmacists and gain insights into healthcare management. Upon graduating with his PharmD in 2017, Dr. Asanga was determined to expand his impact on healthcare by pursuing a master’s degree in public health. He enrolled at Yale University, where he specialized in global health with a focus on social entrepreneurship. As Dr. Asanga pursued his studies at Yale, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and he witnessed vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and immunocompromised, struggling to access essential medications. This inspired him to launch Pills2Me, an initiative driven by young, healthy volunteers delivering medications to those in need. Pills2Me rapidly evolved into a transformative healthcare service, catering not

only to those in dire need but also attracting customers willing to pay for its convenience. Dr. Asanga’s vision expanded to address issues like prescription abandonment and equitable healthcare access. Pills2Me, with its social entrepreneurship approach, enabled him to assist a broader spectrum of people with enhancing medication adherence and improving patient health, and reducing healthcare costs. Last year, supported through a grant from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health, Dr. Asanga partnered with Roseman’s College of Pharmacy to make medication therapy management services easier to access for Nevadans, including the state’s more than 500,000 Medicare beneficiaries. Through the partnership, Roseman’s College of Pharmacy and Pills2Me identified and located pharmacies throughout Nevada that offer medication therapy management services and made them easy for patients to access and request medication reviews through the Pills2Me app. Recently, Dr. Asanga’s Pills2Me was selected as a 2023 recipient of Google for Startups’ prestigious Black Founders Fund, receiving $150,000 in equity-free cash to help fuel growth of the business, as well as sales and fundraising training, technical support from Google mentors, and up to $100,000 in Google Cloud credits.

Roseman University proudly celebrates Dr. Asanga’s achievements and his continued positive impact on healthcare delivery and patient well-being. His journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring healthcare innovators, proving that determination and compassion can change lives for the better. Rosey the Roadrunner embodies the visual representation of Roseman, reflecting its history, culture and character – especially what is believed to be the defining characteristics of our students and alumni. Roadrunners are indigenous to Nevada and parts of Utah, in fact, they’re frequently seen running through the parking lot of the Henderson campus! The qualities of the Roadrunner match well with Roseman students and alumni, because roadrunners are known for their: AWARENESS CURIOSITY CONFIDENCE

ENDURANCE

COURAGE

RESOURCEFULNESS

Roadrunners are also considered Medicine Birds by many Native American tribes in the southwest. The Hopi and other Pueblo tribes believed that the Roadrunner was a medicine bird that could ward off negative energy, and Roadrunner feathers were even used to decorate the cradles of their children to protect them. To Native American tribes in Mexico, it was considered good luck to see a Roadrunner. That tradition holds true today, for every healthcare organization considers it good luck to hire a Roseman roadrunner! 22
