Wow what a month!

Spring seems to have sprung! Weather is starting to improve and all around the flowers are springing into life!

We have just come back from Crufts, where T and Gromit showed their heart out and brought home a 4th each and a 2nd! Well done to my beautiful boys!

Easter is on the horizon, will you be out and about? If you are thinking of a new thing to try with your dogs, I highly recommend the agility sessions at A1K9s at Fenton, T has a wonderful time there and leaves feeling fully exercised, mentally as well as physically. They do great puppy socialization and training classes too.

Four Strange Cat Behaviours Explained Cats are amusing and fun to be around, but sometimes their behaviour just seems downright bizarre. If you’ve ever wondered why your cat behaves in a certain way, from kneading its paws to eating plastic bags, we might be able to offer a little insight.

Head butts - When your cat bumps its head against you, it means they’re trying to bond and is an expression of affection. They’re also demonstrating trust in you and marking you out as a ‘member of their club’.

Staring - Staring is a common trait in cats, if a little unnerving when you’re on the receiving end. They generally stare at their prey before pouncing, but in your case it could be a determined request for food or entertainment.

You should also rule out any potential medical reasons if their pupils are constantly dilated - it could be the result

A Dog Called iPod iPod is a small poodle of a certain age. His memory is not great and he's got camera problems.

Unfortunately he has has had too many eye infections over the last months. Eye pod issues so to speak. It's getting him down. Life seems to be beset by a crusty itchy red eyed viewpoint with too much bathing and too many eye drops by an enthusiastic owner.

It's often caused by a low tear flow. A simple test can be done to measure the tear flow. It's called a Schirmer Tear Test. IPod had very low tear levels. This meant his eyes were too dry and prone to infection.

Keratitis Sicca is the posh name for it -inflammation resulting from dry eyes. It's especially common in spaniels.

The gland that produces tears is attacked by the animals own body cells in an autoimmune reaction. A bit like the human body which rejects a donated kidney in a transplant patient, unless medication is given daily to suppress the rejection.

A similar medication can be used as a "iDrop" or an ointment which when put into the eye suppresses the body and in cases like iPod it stops the rejection of the tear gland and harmony is restored.

Thus iPod was back checking through the iTunes Store in no time at all looking for something to howl at.

Looking for something fun to do over the holidays?

Lincoln Castle has a jam packed programme of events to enjoy!

Help celebrate the new look castle’s second birthday and kick off the school holidays with jokes and japes galore on 1st and 2nd April! Peterkin the fool will be on hand to provide the entertainment, along with a host of costumed characters telling tales in the Victorian prison.

From 1st-17th April, every day of the school holidays, younger visitors can take on the challenge of the castle Easter Quest! Follow William the Conqueror’s Domesday Trail, exploring the castle grounds and help complete the king’s great survey! Yummy treats will be on offer for all of those who complete the quest!

Alongside the Easter Quest… some ‘bah’rilliant visitors will be coming to the castle. Eleven year old Jack Bowles from the Southdown Sheep Society will be bringing his Easter lambs and sheep along, with the chance for attraction ticket holders to say hello!

The Easter lambs and sheep will be at the castle on the following days: Sunday 2nd April Sunday 9th April Sunday 16th April The first of the brand new Early Morning Explorers Sessions at the castle takes place on 8th April. Families with young children with autism can explore the site an hour before opening, with it being adapted to create a more suitable environment for visitors on the sessions. More dates will follow

throughout the year, which can be found at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk On Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April come face to face with the deadly dragon at Lincoln Castle's Victorian St George's Weekend. Be entertained by a variety of costumed characters they perform their own "pageant" to our legendary hero complete with a duo of Victorian musicians to sing and play odes and songs in honour of St George and the Victorian era.

Youngsters will have the chance to take part in our own St George Chivalry School too. All of the entertainment can be found inside the Victorian Prison Yard.

Then enjoy three whole days of hands – on medieval fun from Saturday 29th April Monday 1st May at Lincoln Castle's Children's Medieval Festival.

There are lots of things to do including personal appearances from

children’s favourites Mike the Knight at intervals on Saturday and Monday and the Little Princess on Sunday and Monday.

There will be chance for children to discover all kinds of medieval crafts and pastimes – from medieval music and dance to soldier training, a school for fools, medieval clay tile making and calligraphy. There will be a host of costumed characters and a jam packed day each day to immerse children into medieval times. Come dressed in your finest dressing up costume and make arts and crafts medieval chains for nobles and shields for soldiers to take away.

As a Travel Consultant, I attend lots of wedding fairs and meet lots of couples about to set off on what for many is the most exciting, difficult and, hopefully, happiest journey they’ll ever make – married life – without a guide, map, or idea of where it’ll take them or what to expect when they get there. Hay fever or seasonal allergies can be caused by the pollen of numerous trees, grasses or plants and it affects around 18 million people in the UK. DIAGNOSIS If you’re unsure it’s hay fever causing your symptoms, see your GP. They may refer you for an allergen test to determine whether you’re allergic to pollen or other organic material such as animal hair or dust mites.

A skin prick test only tests for the most common allergens, so it may be inconclusive. Your skin is pricked and exposed to a tiny dose of allergen - it should react if you’re allergic.

A blood test for the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody, produced when you encounter pollen, may also be used.

Symptoms Symptoms can range from mild to life-impacting: • itchy and/or runny nose • sneezing • irritated, itchy, watery eyes TREATING HAY FEVER How you treat your hay fever will depend on the type and severity of your symptoms.

Research by Allergy UK in 2014 showed that 62% of sufferers found their current medication ineffective – yet they failed to seek better alternatives or didn’t use it properly (only 14% 18

Ask a pharmacist for advice on the right medication and alternatives if it’s ineffective. Ensure you follow doctor’s, pharmacist’s and manufacturer’s instructions carefully. See your GP if over the counter treatments aren’t working, or you develop sinus or ear infections.

Oral Medications (Tablets and Liquids) Antihistamines block the action of histamine, a chemical triggered by allergen exposure, to reduce or stop your allergic reaction. They may not relieve a blocked nose but are usually effective against other symptoms. As a preventative, they work best if taken regularly and started in advance of high pollen count periods. They can also be taken as required when symptoms begin.

Some older antihistamines (e.g. chlorpheniramine, known as Piriton) make you drowsy and can affect your ability to do your job or drive. However, most people now choose newer, nonsedating antihistamines (e.g.

Loratadine).

Steroids are only usually used short-term if other medications aren’t working or if your hay fever causes or aggravates asthma. They reduce symptoms E\ UHGXFLQJ LQÁDPPDWLRQ Nasal Sprays and Drops Decongestant nasal sprays unblock your nose but can cause rebound congestion after a few days, so only use them for occasional relief or as an additional treatment on days

when symptoms are severe.

Steroid nasal sprays or drops prevent and reduce LQÁDPPDWLRQ LQ WKH QDVDO lining and can help relieve eye itchiness too.

Antihistamine nasal sprays relieve an itchy nose and reduce sneezing.

Eyedrops Antihistamine eyedrops reduce itchiness and watering.

Inhalers and Injections If seasonal allergies cause or exacerbate asthma, you may be offered a steroid inhaler and/or a ‘reliever’, such as salbutamol (‘Ventolin’). Injectable medications may sometimes be recommended if steroids aren’t adequate. Monoclonal antibody treatments (‘mabs’) such as Xolair block a substance involved in allergic reactions.

Immunotherapy If your symptoms are persistent or severe, your doctor may suggest immunotherapy to progressively build allergen immunity. A specialist will gradually introduce your body to small amounts of allergen by injection or a sublingual tablet and monitor your reaction.

Treatment is started three months before your trigger pollen season.

Replacing ultra-successful cars is never easy for a manufacturer, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the challenge Audi has faced with the Q5, the brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best-selling SUV. Built at the manufacturerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most advanced â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;smart factoryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in Mexico, the refreshed offroader is packed with clever technology, features revised engines and a fresh look that the maker hopes will continue to win over buyers. But has it done enough?

LOOKS AND IMAGE The new Q5 may be a little OHVV Ă DVK\ WKDQ LWV -DJXDU F-Pace rival, but that smart new octagonal nose, dramatic headlights and sharp body creases give it fantastic presence on the road. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s helped by a wonderfully squat stance and perfect proportions.

Inside the quality is clear. Solid, good quality materials are everywhere and the leather seats are comfortable and perfectly adjustable. There is plenty of space around the driver and logically placed controls for the multimedia system.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a three-zone climate control system, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound 38

system, and the optional virtual cockpit, which replaces the dials with a 12.3-inch high resolution display.

SPACE AND PRACTICALITY The new Q5 is bigger and wider than its predecessor â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but still 90kg lighter. Inside thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more headroom and rear knee-room, while boot space is up 10 litres.

Two adults will sit comfortably in the back, but a large transmission tunnel seriously eats into rear legroom in the middle seat.

Safety systems are plentiful and buyers can opt for active lane assist, pre-sense assistance which helps detect if a crash is imminent and can apply the EUDNHV IRU \RX DQG FURVV WUDIĂ&#x20AC;F assistance at the rear that will help when pulling out of parking VSDFHV ,Q VORZ PRYLQJ WUDIĂ&#x20AC;F itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even partly autonomous, slowing down and speeding up in jams while keeping you in your lane.

WHATâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S UNDER THE BONNET? There are three engine options to pick from â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but the best seller, and our pick of the bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm, 2.0-litre TDI, which will account for 60 per cent of sales in the

UK. This comes as standard with a clever new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system that can switch seamlessly between two and four-wheel drive automatically. Fuel economy is 56.5mpg with emissions of 132g/km, and it hits 60mph in 7.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 135mph.

A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol option with 250bhp is also available.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capable of returning 40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes the line-up, producing 284bhp and a stonking 620Nm of torque.

BEHIND THE WHEEL The new Q5 is quite simply brilliant to drive. We tested the car on a variety of terrain, from motorways to cities and beaches to dirt tracks; it took them all in its stride. On the URDG LW¡V TXLHW UHĂ&#x20AC;QHG DQG accomplished, while in the grit it was surefooted and secure.

The revised 2.0-litre diesel engine is punchy and works brilliantly when combined with the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox - overall itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s by far and away the best choice of transmission.

VERDICT Audi has moved the game on with its new Q5 but not ruined a recipe that has won it so many admirers. Stylish, comfortable and great to drive, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now packed with even more clever technology and features. With best in class performance and economy, and some highly tempting optional extras, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be very surprised if any of its rivals managed to usurp it at the top of the sales charts any time soon.
