TFM Countrystore announce new partnership with Fresh Start for Hens

Two more Brompton bike docking stations have been installed in Newark, adding to the enhanced cycling offer in the town. Docking stations at Newark Bus Station and in the heart of the Middlebeck development will each hold 8 Brompton folding bicycles and residents can book out the bikes via the Brompton bike hire app. Once downloaded, residents select their membership and input their ID. They can reserve a bike for a day in advance to travel for 24 hours or keep the bike for up to 30 days. At the end of the rental period, residents simply drop the bike off at any Brompton dock, which could be in Newark or another town. Bikes are simple to unfold and can be placed easily on trains and in offices, even under desks. There are now three Brompton Bike stations in the town with the first docking station at Newark Castle Train Station located in the front car park at Castle House. The installation of the docking stations form part of one of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s eight priority projects using the £25m Towns Fund deal secured with central Government, which was developed to help increase prosperity and economic growth in towns across the UK. The ’20-Minute Cycle Town’ project links to wider sustainable and active travel ambitions and seeks to make cycling an easier, more affordable option for Newark residents and workers.

TFM Countrystore in Whisby are excited to announce that they will be working with Fresh Start For Hens as a hen collection point. Fresh Start for Hens are a nonprofit voluntary organisation who raise awareness of the plight of the commercial caged hen. They aim to educate people about the egg production industry as it is today, and hopefully, change people’s attitude towards the use of caged hens and persuade them that it is worth paying a fair price for eggs from free range hens. They fully support British farmers and they rescue thousands of ex commercial hens and ducks from farms where they have reached the end of their commercial viability and work to rehome these to forever homes where they can live out their years in luxury.

A Taste Turmericfor

Beats cancer? While studies in humans are still in very early stages, lab and animal studies have shown promising effects of curcumin in the fight against cancer, by interfering with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth and spread.

BENEFITS OF TURMERIC Eases aches and pains

From helping fight inflammation to preventing heart disease and cancer, turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence.

Terminology Turmeric is a plant and it’s the roots of the plant that are used to make the spice that is used in cooking and herbal drinks. Curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid

It’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala –but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful antiinflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks.

powderTurmericcompound.has the highest concentration.curcumin

Several studies suggest that curcumin leads to improvements in endothelial function, which helps regulate blood pressure, blood clotting and various other factors.

A powerful anti-inflammatory, there is evidence to suggest a daily dose of turmeric can greatly benefit those suffering from joint problems and Thatarthritis.said, turmeric is not listed as an arthritis treatment by the NHS, and therefore is unlikely to be prescribed by your GP. Boosts moods By reducing inflammation in the brain, the curcumin element enhances the flow of neurotransmitters. Rids you of free radicals

Dried turmeric, meanwhile, which is much less potent, adds colour and enhanced earthiness to preparations such as roasts, rice and scrambled eggs. Supplement that! Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement.

Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects and fights those nasty cell-damaging atoms. Found in everything from fried food to air pollution, free radicals have been linked to both ageing and cancer and the fewer of them in our bodies, the better. Prevents heart disease

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone.

He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column

Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and companiesfour only –O2, EE, Vodafone and EveryThree.other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making Insavings.anera of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation!

Explore the National Holocaust Centre and Museum: Britain's first ever place of Holocaust remembrance and learning. Having evolved over 25 years from a single exhibition in a rural family home into a nationally accredited museum. We are Britain's first ever place of Holocaust remembrance and learning. Our founders are the remarkable Smith family, the only non-Jewish founders of any such place in the UK. Based in the beautiful Sherwood Forest area - rich not only in Robin Hood folklore but ironically, England’s own anti-Jewish history - we became a home-from-home for inspiring speakers: survivors of the Holocaust. An extension of the Smith family, they attracted ever-growing adult and school audiences. The centre boasts beautiful, reflective memorial gardens and powerful exhibitions. The museum welcomes families to visit 'The Journey' exhibition, a multiplatform experience immersing you in the life of Leo, a young Jewish boy in 1930s Berlin, and his escape on the Kindertransport. The Holocaust was the product of the world’s longest hatred: anti-Jewish stereotyping and conspiracy theory. It was a founding pillar of Western society and is

Marco Pierre White’s Chicken Chasseur

2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until golden-brown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side.

Next, acidity.add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.

4. While the chicken is simmering, take a separate frying pan and heat the remaining olive oil. Slice the mushrooms and add to the second pan, then fry them for 3-5 minutes.

5. Next, add in the parsley and diced tomato, shaking the pan to mix everything in well. Spoon the mushrooms, parsley and tomato over the chicken and garnish with sprigs of parsley, then serve.

• 2 shallots, very finely chopped (100g or 3.5 oz)

Now finely chop the shallot and Method

Introduction

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp plain flour, for coating

Ingredients (serves 4)

• Either 1 small chicken, cut into 8 pieces, or 8 chicken thighs, or 8 chicken breast fillets (skin on or off as preferred)

• 3 tbsp tarragon, chopped • 2 tbsp parsley, chopped • 2 tomatoes, skinned, deseeded and finely diced

• A few sprigs of fresh parsley to garnishadd to the frying pan, placing the shallot under the chicken so that the shallot cooks.

3. If you are using brandy, pour it in around the edge of the pan so that it runs underneath the chicken. Cook for 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Add the wine in the same way, pouring it in around the sides of the pan, and cook for a further 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate and reduce the

• 50ml (3 ½ tbsp) brandy, optional • 100ml (7 tbsp) white wine • 1 chicken stock pot • 600ml (2 1/2 cups) tomato juice (with an optional touch of gravy browning added in for extra colour if desired)

1. Gently heat half of the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. The oil should be hot, but not so hot that it scorches the floured chicken. Next, spread a layer of flour on a plate or a tray, and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add a golden-brown colour to the cooked chicken and help to thicken the sauce.

For anyone who’s ever chanced upon these little wonders, the plight of the hedgehog - in the last decade numbers have fallen by 30% - will feel like a real shame. After all, they are charming, nervous and largely harmless animals. However, there are some things you can do to help our hog friends survive their current plight. Hog heaven Create a nesting place for any expected hedgehogs by curating log and leaf piles, plus wilderness areas. In addition, buy a purpose-built hedgehog home to provide a safe haven. Fallen leaves also offer perfect nesting material, so make sure to leave some when you next clear your garden.

Put away the pellets There is no need for slug pellets when you have a thriving hedgehog population, as these hungry little hogs can hoover up over 100 snails, slugs and worms every night!

Hooray Hedgehogsfor

While hedgehogs are excellent at finding their own food, a helping hand in a time of need goes a long way. Of course, if you see a really poorly hedgehog who appears to be in need of treatment, medical your first step should be contactto your local advice.centrerescuefor Protection A vital feature for hedgehogs in your garden is long grass, where they might hide away and feel safe from the gaze of predators. This grass and surrounding plants will encourage a mass of snails and slugs which, as above, are a hedgehog delicacy! Pick me up! Finally, while we may consider hedgehogs to be some of the most visually scary animals out there given they are covered in a blanket of prickly spikes, they are actually very friendly and will respond well to being held.

Looking after hedgehog health If you find an underweight sickly-lookingorhedgehog,oralternativelyahedgehogactiveinwinter, put out tinned cat or dog food and fresh water.

Thisgardens.transforms your garden from an isolated nature reserve into a spiny mammal thoroughfare, which is fun for all concerned.

With their bristly bodies and snuffling snouts, hedgehogs are one of the nation’s favourite garden visitors. Yet despite pleas for urban and rural gardeners to take better care of these cute animals, hedgehog numbers continue to decline at an alarming rate. 38

and require slightly longer in the ground, so planting now will mean they won’t be ready until next summer. All of this proves that while many of us believe the end of the summer will gradually see our gardens lose their colourful, bountiful appeal, there is still plenty of work to do, and plenty of our outside spaces still to be enjoyed. He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. is month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses pu ing early preparations in place for the cold season. So then, winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way o yet, but ge ing our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter, is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a li le, well, ‘out of season’, you might say!e notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy, they are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up warm, with the products of our labour in front of us. ink about kale, brussels sprouts, parsnips, and who can resist the Jerusalem artichoke? ese are all easy to get into the group, simple to maintain, and will flourish as the year goes on, ready for picking just when the temperatures begin to drop sharply in November. You also need to start thinking about early spring vegetables –they’ll be longer in the ground but still working their magic through the winter months. In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an early-spring treat. You’ve also got leeks, something that are a must on a winter plot – they o er volume, flavour and spiciness right up until the soil freezes solid – and winter salads… rows of Lambs Le uce, Land Cress and mustard will need some protection from the elements, but once in the ground are resilient and happy to be picked across the colder months, where they’ll regrow and keep the supply to your lunch table constant. And you can never ignore hardy, tough and tasty onions (and shallots). ey are easy to plant, brilliantly versatile, and incredibly resourceful in the soil. Onions have an incredibly long growing season too
