ugust is traditionally the month when we try to slow things down a little, and although our modern pace of life means that’s not always possible, it still feels like this month is a little bit unique – at least to us! The days are long and warm (if sometimes wet!) and everyone seems to be taking things at a slightly less frantic pace than normal. Plus of course we have a final Bank Holiday to enjoy in England, Wales and Northern Ireland before Christmas, which prompted us to read up a little on the history of our Late Summer Bank Holiday. We discovered that it was initially introduced in 1871 as a way to give us all a chance to make the most of the summer, and for bank employees in particular to attend cricket matches! It didn't always fall on the last Monday of the month - up until 1971 it always took place on the first Monday of August. It was moved as it clashed with the traditional two week shut down that many companies utilised at that time. This month instead of being chained to our desks every day we’re determined to make the most of our summer and get out and about more with the family. On the agenda we have picnics, open air cinemas, long walks in the countryside, and plenty of ice cream! So whether August means taking a break from work or continuing life as normal, we hope you find time to relax with friends and loved ones. Until next month,

Work has begun to safeguard Castle’s future Work has started to carry out important conservation work to Newark Castle. A condition survey was carried out earlier this year identifying necessary repairs to both the internal and external walls and care was then taken in finding a unique and specially trained team able to achieve the improvements. The £570,000 conservation, funded by Newark and Sherwood District Council, is expected to continue into autumn to ensure that this special building is looked after, both for its own

protection and for that of visitors to its grounds. Scheduled events including Palace at the Castle open air theatre performances will continue as programmed and the Castle team will be working closely with couples to ensure any concerns are put to rest regarding their wedding days. Heras safety fencing will remain in place while the internal wall repairs are carried out and is expected to be replaced with scaffolding when work begins on the external walls.

Updates on the work, as well as information about upcoming events, can be found on the Newark Castle Facebook page, www.facebook.com/NewarkCastleNotts.

Land allocation for Gypsy and Travellers Earlier this year, Newark and Sherwood District Council announced its plans to meet the future housing needs of its gypsy and traveller population, as it does with other types of future housing need. The proposal would see additional pitches created to accommodate caravans and associated amenity space. At this time the District Council were considering three new potential sites for additional pitches. These were: 1 – Chestnut Lodge at Barnby: a private landowner has put forward some land which could provide 20 pitches. 2 – Belvoir Ironworks: land available for sale to the District Council which could provide 30 pitches. 4

3 – Trent Lane, Newark: land available for sale to the District Council which could provide 19 pitches. A report, which was presented to the District Council’s Cabinet Meeting on 12 July, recommended that the proposed Trent Lane site is not deliverable for Gypsy and

Traveller use. Subject to the agreement of Cabinet, the site will therefore be withdrawn from the remaining sites being considered for allocation for Gypsy and Traveller use. The District Council intends to present its overall strategy for meeting its future Gypsy and Traveller needs in September.

Update from the District Council on support for residents with rising costs of living Since the energy rebate was announced in February 2022, the UK government has made a number of other announcements about ways in which it plans to support residents with rising costs of living. However, there have been several questions raised and today the District Council is trying to ensure that they all get answered.

I

n an effort to ensure the details of the scheme are clear, the District Council has released a summary, outlined below. The first two payments listed below will be paid to you by the District Council and includes details of how you can receive this money if you haven’t already. 1. £150 Council Tax Energy Bills Rebate What is this? This is a £150 one-off payment to those living in households in Council Tax bands A-D and to those who live in a band E property who receive a disabled band reduction. Who will I receive this from? Newark and Sherwood District Council. See below as to how you will receive this. 2. Discretionary Funding

8

What is this? The government provided the District Council with discretionary funding with no guidance as to how this was to be issued. Time was spent by the District Council to ensure that a fair scheme was drawn up so those most in need received this additional funding. In Newark and Sherwood the discretionary funding is being paid as follows: l Households in receipt of Council Tax Support in Bands E-H will receive £150 l Households in receipt of Council Tax Support in Bands A-D (and Band E where Disabled Band Reduction is awarded) will receive an additional £28 Who will I receive this from? Newark and Sherwood District Council. See below as to how you will receive this.

| Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

How will you receive your Council Tax Energy Bills rebate and Discretionary Funding payments from Newark and Sherwood District Council? For those who pay their Council Tax by direct debit, payments are being made directly into bank accounts where records match. A letter will be issued to confirm when this has happened. While over 75% of payments have already been processed, this has taken longer where additional verification is needed if the name on the bank account and Council Tax bill do not match. Households who do not pay by direct debit will receive a letter over the next three weeks with information on how they can receive the payment. The first batch of letters have been posted out today.

Each letter will include a unique bar code that can be scanned at any Post Office to receive their cash payment. Residents can find their nearest Post Office branch at postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder.

debit and credit customers will have the money credited to their account, while customers with pre-payment meters will have the money applied to their meter or paid via a voucher.

The Council Tax payer will need to take the letter along with two forms of identification and proof of address. This can include: l Valid passport l National Identity Card (photo) l Photo driving licence l Other photo identification (e.g. bus pass) l Utility bill l Post Office Easy ID

4. £650 Cost of Living Payment What is this? £650 will be paid to households on means tested benefits. It will be paid in two instalments to all households receiving the following benefits: l Universal Credit l Income-based Jobseekers Allowance l Income-related Employment and Support Allowance l Income Support l Working Tax Credit l Child Tax Credit l Pension Credit

The letters have to be sent out in batches to ensure that the Post Office is not overwhelmed. For those unable to get to a post office For any claimant that will have difficulties getting to their nearest Post Office branch, they can contact the District Council to receive a link to a form where they can submit their bank details for payment instead. These bank details will need to be verified with the Council Tax records held. If a payment is not claimed before 31 August 2022, the rebate will instead be applied as a credit to a household’s Council Tax account. 3. £400 Energy Bills Support Scheme What is this? All households will get £400 of support with their energy bills. This is in addition to the £150 Energy Rebate. It does not have to be re-paid and will not be recovered through higher bills in future years.

Who will I receive this from? From either the DWP or HMRC. The DWP will make the payment in two lump sums – the first from July, the second in the autumn. Payments from HMRC for those on tax credits only will follow shortly after each to avoid duplicate payments.

Who will I receive this from? The Government. 6. £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment What is this? A one-off payment, made on top of any other payments received, which will be made from September, to those who receive: Disability Living Allowance Personal Independence Payment l Attendance Allowance l Scottish Disability Benefits l Armed Forces Independence Payment l Constant Attendance Allowance l War Pension Mobility Supplement l l

Who will I receive this from? The Government. 7. Household Support Grant What is this? The allocation process is due to be finalised shortly but the fund will be allocated towards rising costs of food, energy and water bills. Who will I receive this from? Nottinghamshire County Council.

5. 300 Pensioner Cost of Living Payment What is this? An additional £300 one-off payment will be made to all pensioner households. For those in receipt of the Winter Fuel Payment, this is in addition to that.

Who will I receive this from? Energy suppliers will deliver this support to households with a domestic electricity meter over six months from October. A Stroll around Collingham This is a short walk of just over 4km that I recently led for the Collingham “Walking for Wellbeing” group. It begins at Collingham Coop, visits the Community Orchard, and then follows side roads and public footpaths to the Trent Vale trail and back to the village. There are information boards in the community orchard and at Collingham Cross. Follow the footpath left of the Co-op and turn right down the first road you come to (Swinderby road). Walk down until the sign on the left to the COMMUNITY ORCHARD (just after a dilapidated building). Go straight across the orchard and take the path to the left just outside it. This comes out at Foster Road slightly on right. Walk up the cul de sac and through a kissing gate at the top. Follow the path diagonally right through two fields, coming out and turning left up Hemplands and Meering Close. Follow the path at the end of this road, turning right at the path junction. You will come out on the main road (A1133, Besthorpe Rd). opposite Collingham Cross. Cross over and walk straight down Queen St to a junction, facing Pitomy Drive. Do not go down the drive, but a few

metres to the right of it there is a sign to a narrow footpath between a wall and a house. Cross over and take the footpath which leads to fields. Follow the track with fields on the left and trees/ hedge on the right. After about 500 metres you will see way marking arrows, and a little after them the track bends to the left and comes out on the Trent Vale trail. Go left along the trail till Northcroft Lane, then turn left heading back towards the village. You will arrive at the church of All Saints. Turn right, then left up White Hart Lane which will lead you back to the main road. Go right along this back to the Coop. A very pleasant walk for a summer stroll but maybe a bit muddy in winter. Enjoy! FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WALKING FOR WELLBEING: T. 01522 544 632 W. lincolnshire.coop/wellbeing walks

Body Talk: Diabetes The technology that is powering our fight against diabetes. The spectre of diabetes is one that has become prevalent in recent years, particularly in the type 2 form of the disease, with over 85% of diagnoses being brought about as a result of poor health and lifestyle choices. Type 1 diabetes, meanwhile, which is generally considered more dangerous, can develop at any age, and is most prevalent in children and adolescents. In both cases, the use of oral drugs is recommended in order to keep blood sugar levels under control, yet a number of ground-breaking technological developments look set to make our detection and management of diabetes that much better. One such tech development is the wider introduction of insulin pumps and smart insulin pens. In the past, a basic insulin pen was used at the onset of symptoms; yet now an insulin pump (a small electronic device that releases the regular insulin

your body needs to make it through the day and night) can do the detective work for you. There is also tech that checks blood sugar levels - for instance, Flash and CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) devices can produce a reading without even the need to prick your finger. There are also ketone monitors – ketones being poisonous chemicals that develop if there’s not enough insulin in your blood to allow glucose to enter the cells.

could lead to weight loss.

Finally, in a new study announced this summer, people who suffer from type 2 diabetes could be helped to lose weight while they sleep. The new method suggests breathing lower amounts of oxygen during sleep (something known as hypoxia)

Initial trials are being run at the University of Portsmouth, investigating whether sleeping in special tents that create an environment of lower oxygen in the air is effective at improving blood glucose control, and has a subsequent impact on weight loss. The evidence suggests hypoxia can reduce appetite and burn more calories in people who have type 2 diabetes. And with people living with type 2 diabetes expected to reach 700 million worldwide by 2045, the effect of this technology on world health could be gamechanging.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how we can repair our credit score. Let’s be honest, the last couple of years haven’t been kind to our finances. The good news is the ability to rescue and repair that credit rating is within our own hands, and with a concerted plan we can get back to where we want to be. And that’s important – having a good credit rating means gaining access to preferential interest rates; it could be the difference between being able to buy a house, or rent a flat, or not; and it also gives us peace of mind that if an emergency crops up we can lean on financial support. When it comes to improving

our credit score, first check your current rating – with the likes of Experian or Equifax – and know what you’re dealing with. When you’ve done that, see about disassociating yourself from others who may be pulling you down with their own chequered credit history - their activity may be negatively impacting yours. Next, get yourself signed up on the electoral roll. It’s a great way for credit agencies to be able to verify who you are and adds a layer of authenticity to any application.

Spring cleaning your finances is another really sensible option. Many of us have old credit cards or bank accounts that we don’t use. They may seem harmless on the face of it, but they all represent risk as far as your credit score is concerned. Next, start investing in your credit future. Using a credit card may seem a peculiar way of improving your credit, but done sensibly it will. And by sensibly, I mean use it for everyday purchases on the specific understanding you’ll clear the balance at the end of each month. Doing this will boost your credit rating and prove to any lender that you can be trusted. Finally, if you can’t afford to clear your full balance at the end of the month, at least pay off more than the minimum payment. Mending your credit score won’t be achieved overnight, but your future self will thank you for your efforts today!

Fiction Factory This month, four forays into fantastic fiction to ease you through the summer sun. covered in black pen, scribbled messages like graffiti on her skin: STAY AWAKE. In the vein of SJ Watson’s Before I Go to Sleep and Christopher Nolan’s cult classic Memento, Megan Goldin’s Stay Awake is an electrifying novel that plays with memory and murder.

The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Aug 30th) To inherit billions, all Avery Kylie Grambs has to do is survive a few more weeks living in Hawthorne House. The paparazzi are dogging her every step. Financial pressures are building. Danger is a fact of life. Yet as the clock ticks down to the moment when Avery will become the richest teenager on the planet, trouble arrives in the form of a visitor who needs her help. Stay Awake by Megan Goldin (Aug 9th) Liv Reese wakes up in the back of a taxi with no idea where she is or how she got there. When she’s dropped off at her door, a stranger answers―a stranger who now lives in her apartment and forces her out in the cold. She reaches for her phone to call for help, only to discover it’s missing, and in its place is a bloodstained knife. That’s when she sees that her hands are

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood (Aug 23rd) From the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a new STEMinist rom-com in which a scientist is forced to work on a project with her nemesis—with explosive results. Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. And sure, he caught her in his powerfully corded arms like a romance novel hero when she accidentally damseled in distress on her first day in the lab. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school— archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away. Yet Bee could swear she can see Levi softening into

an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas… and the possibilities have all her neurons firing. The Hookup Plan by Farrah Rochon (Aug 2nd) Strong female friendships and a snappy enemies-to-lovers theme take centre stage in this highly anticipated romantic comedy from the USA Today bestselling author of The Dating Playbook. Successful paediatric surgeon London Kelley just needs to find some balance and de-stress. According to her friends Samiah and Taylor, what London really needs is a casual hookup. A night of fun with no strings. But no one, least of all London, expected it to go down at her high school reunion with millionaire Drew Sullivan…

The Summer Reading Challenge is back in Inspire libraries this summer and you can take part from now until Sunday 4th September! This year's challenge has been developed in partnership with The Science Museum Group, the world’s leading alliance of science museums. The challenge features the Gadgeteers – six fictional young innovators who, using creative thinking and teamwork, plan a party for their town’s summer fair celebration. Gadgeteers will be a celebration of reading, science and imagination.

There is also a Mini-Challenge for children aged 3 and under. How to take part in the library Children sign up at the library to start their Challenge, collecting the Gadgeteers collector poster. l Borrow books and get reading! Children choose the books they want to read, recording what they have read in their poster. Library staff and volunteers are on hand to chat to children about books they have read. l For every book read, children will pick up stickers (some are smelly!) along with other rewards. They will also discover the inventive ways the Gadgeteers are getting reading for their summer party. l Every child who completes the challenge, by reading 6 library books, receives a medal and certificate. l

The Mini Challenge is a bite sized version of the Summer Reading Challenge for our youngest readers. Children collect stickers on a special collector card for the books they borrow and read. It’s all free, fun and a great way to keep children reading over the summer holidays.

Ingredients (serves 8) For the lemon cake • butter, to grease the tin • 5 eggs • 300g caster sugar • 140ml double cream

Raymond Blanc’s Lemon Cake Introduction

Lemon cake with tea is a grand tradition at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and it has been served here for almost 40 years. What I love about the perfect lemon cake is it’s fresh, zesty and as light as a cloud.

Method

1. Lightly grease the loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper. Then, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, cream, lemon zest, rum, salt and melted butter. 2. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then whisk into the egg mixture until smooth, spooning the mixture into the loaf tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes, turning the tin around halfway through

• finely grated zest of 3 lemons • 25ml dark rum • 1 pinch sea salt • 80g unsalted butter, melted • 240g plain flour • ½ tsp baking powder For the glaze • 50g apricot jam, warmed • finely grated zest of 1 lemon, plus 3 tbsp juice • 150g icing sugar

cooking. To test the cake, insert a small knife into the middle – if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked.

heat to 35°C, until smooth. If the glaze is any hotter, it will recrystallise, losing its shine and crispness.

3. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool for 10 minutes.

Brush the lemon glaze evenly over the top and sides of the cake and leave for a few minutes to set.

4. Lightly brush the cake all over with the warm jam. The jam creates a barrier, so the lemon glaze is not absorbed. Leave for 5 minutes. 5. Now mix the lemon zest and juice with the icing sugar in a small pan and warm over a low

6. Finally, place the cake on a baking tray in the oven, turn off the heat and leave for 3–5 minutes to dry the glaze – it will become translucent. Allow to cool before slicing.

What your flowers say about you Whether growing sprays of inspiring, energising flowers in our gardens, or choosing an appropriate bunch of flowers to send as a gesture to a friend, family member or loved one, the florae and blossoms we send actually say more about us than you might imagine. Flowers Anthurium The ideal flower someone who has been a wonderful host, these brilliant red, exotic beauties symbolise hospitality, happiness and abundance. Carnation These cute and ruffled blooms actually represent pride and beauty, while their different colours have a host of other meanings: white – innocence and pure love; red – admiration, pink – motherly love; yellow – disdain. Chrysanthemum A bouquet staple, these impressive flowers have a simple meaning – honesty. Daffodil Want to tell someone you love them but don’t know how? Daffodils are the flower of unrequited love.

Forget-Me-Nots As the name of these delicate blue buds would suggest, Forget-Me-Nots represent true love, longing and memory. Lavender Not just for tucking into drawers to keep clothes fresh, the fragrant lavender actually represents devotion. Lilac Think you might be falling for someone? Lilacs symbolise the first emotions of love. Lily Often thought of as a funeral flower, the fragrant, majestic and ethereal lily actually represents purity of heart, and when displayed at a funeral means that the departed’s soul has been restored to innocence. Lily-of-the-Valley These buoyant little bells are an ideal token for a recent birth as they symbolise sweetness. Orchid Want the ultimate Mother’s Day gift? Orchids represent

refinement, glorious femininity, and mature charm. Peony The ultimate passive-aggressive statement, the Peony is charming and often included in a bouquet yet indicates anger. Red Poppy The flower of Remembrance Day represents just that. --Roses As far as roses go, again there are a maze of meanings attached to the colours we choose: Red – love Light Pink – grace Coral – desire Dark pink – gratitude Peach – modesty Cream – charm and thoughtfulness White – a heart touched by love Burgundy – beauty Purple – enchantment Yellow – infidelity

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the most common mistakes we make in our gardens.

ruthless with what grows in our gardens, so remember, everything grows at a different rate and sometimes the most mundane of plants will flourish to become the most beautiful… but only if they’re left in the ground!

I always say, as a golden rule, prevention is better than cure, so with that in mind here are my top seven gardening mistakes… and how to avoid them!

Another big thing is failing to prepare your soil. Give your plants a chance by ensuring the soil they’re in is in good condition. A simple testing kit will let you know if you need to re-compost, add fertiliser, or simply switch to a different soil type.

Firstly, you can have too much of a good thing! Less is more when it comes to good gardening, and if you cram too much together it’ll look a mess, or worse still, will die! Another big error is over- and under-watering. Be regimented over your watering routine and adjust it depending on rainfall to ensure your garden is nicely hydrated at all times. Next, always ensure what you’re pulling up are weeds and not slowdeveloping flowers. We can sometimes find ourselves being particularly

You should also steer clear of what I call ‘the bullies’! Japanese knotweed and Russian vine are particularly unruly and will literally undermine not just your flowers, but nearby buildings too! And the same goes for our animal friends. Sure, we may like to see a hedgehog, bird life, even the odd fox, but the best gardens are those that manage to protect the food supply present! My final piece of advice is to try to spread the love around your garden. Few of us have an endless budget with which to run riot in our green spaces, and it’s better to do a

little at a time across the board, than blow it all in one part of the garden, leaving the rest of it looking forlorn and bereft. Remember, no two gardens are the same, in much the same way that no two gardeners are the same, and you’re never going to get it right all of the time. The most important thing is to be organised and put the effort in – if you do that, the rewards will very often follow close behind.
