COUP OF THE YEAR: AUCTION ACQUISITIONS This year saw several auction groups expand their ranks, most notably with XLerate Auction Group’s acquisition of Columbus Fair Auto Auction (CFAA). The two parties announced the sale of the historic Ohio independent auction to XLerate on Oct. 25, after a long courtship by the auction group. Former CFAA owner Alexis Jacobs was expected to stay on until the end of the year and then serve as an ambassador for XLerate. Greg Levi, CFAA, will remain as president of the sale. But XLerate wasn’t alone. Ben Lange, president and CEO of America’s Auto Auction, acquired KCI Kansas City from the McConkey Auction Group, boosting America’s stable to 23 sales. In September, The Stanley-Autenrieth Auction Group announced it purchased the Fort Wayne Auto Truck Auction and was merging it into existing operations of Indiana Auto Auction.
FLOP OF THE YEAR: WASHINGTON D.C. The gridlock that has plagued the nation’s capital in recent years reached a whole new level in 2019. Since the release of the Mueller Report last spring, the battles between the Democrat-led Congress and Republican President Donald J. Trump have marched toward an expected impeachment trial in 2020. At press time, issues the auto industry has sought action on lay dormant, from the proposed United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, to arbitration and safety recalls. With 2020 being a presidential election year, the expectation of much being done is low, though there is some hope that USMCA may be one item that gets passed.
