2014 Sand Shark Soccer The Season

The Sand Sharks

Season Outlook The 2014 campaign marks the end of an era for the University of South Carolina Beaufort women’s soccer team. It’s the final season for a group of Sand Sharks who played on the inaugural team in 2011 and have endured a sometimes bumpy ride en route to the eve of a promising senior season. Only four players remain from that initial team, which won only one game against a strong slate of opponents but began to lay the foundation for what has grown into a successful program. The four original Sand Sharks — goalkeepers Chelsie Mummert and Fred Gallman and midfielders Alexa Muffley and Steph Moldenhauer — often remind newcomers — and even prospective recruits — how far the program has come in three short years and prepare them for the work ethic required to continue the upward trajectory. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without them being here,” USCB coach Ed Heberling said. “Without them going through what we went through the first year, none of our players would understand where we’ve been and where we are now. “Those four can give a perspective than only they can truly comprehend. It takes a special kind of player to buy into what we’ve had to do to build this program, and those four players have been able to get that message across.” The Sand Sharks have set a high bar for themselves to clear. Just two years removed from that one-win season, they’ve won 18 games over the past two seasons and last year finished 9-9-1 overall and 5-4 in the Sun Conference, good enough for fifth place and a home game in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. Heberling feels confident his team is ready to take the next step thanks a strong group of returners and a recruiting class he says is on par with last year’s deep group. USCB returns seven starters and 18 letterwinners from last year’s squad and expects several of the newcomers to step into key roles and make a major impact. The new recruits include a number of players Heberling and assistant Hilary George brought in because of their offensive prowess. “The first three years, we’ve been really focused on

the defensive effort,” Heberling said. “This offseason we really went out and tried to add some players who would allow us to add more of an offensive component to our game. I feel confident we have some players in place that will help us become more attack-oriented, possess the ball more in the attacking half and finish more of our scoring opportunities.” The influx of talent might not present itself early in the season, though. Because of the sheer number of new players, as well as a rash of injuries in preseason training, Heberling and George are still working to put together all the pieces of the puzzle. Heberling’s goal is to finish in the top four in the Sun Conference, a challenging task considering the top three teams in the league are ranked among the top 11 in the nation in the preseason.

Senior Chelsie Mummert returns to protect the net for the Sand Sharks after another strong campaign. An honorable mention All-Sun Conference selection as a sophomore in 2012, Mummert put up even more impressive numbers as a junior, posting career-bests in goals against average (2.04) and save percentage (.753). Mummert has recorded five shutouts in each of the past two seasons and compiled 256 saves over that stretch. Fellow senior Fred Gallman has steadily improved throughout her career at USCB and is more than capable of stepping into the starting role if needed. Gallman was the Sand Sharks’ primary goalkeeper as a freshman in 2011 but took on a backup role when Mummert returned to her natural position full-time in 2012. Sophomore Kenzie Rathe adds depth and experience

to the ranks. A transfer from Salem College, Rathe appeared in 10 games (four starts) and compiled 11 saves while allowing three goals as a freshman. The Cloquet, Minn., native also recorded a shutout. Freshman Caroline Smith will redshirt this season while recovering from knee surgery but should compete for the starting job along with Rathe in 2015.

The Sand Sharks return two players in the back who started 10 or more games last year in sophomores Poppy Miller and Megan Benoist, but neither is a lock to be a full-time starter thanks to a deep pool of defenders. Sophomore Caroline Bowman appeared in 17 games (six starts) as a freshman and developed into a key member of the defense as the season progressed and is poised to start at outside back along with junior Alexandria Radue, a transfer from Parkland (Ill.) Community College. Benoist is a versatile player who is expected to see time at center back and forward. She played in 17 games (10 starts) as a freshman and scored three goals, including two game-winners. Benoist has worked well at center back in the preseason with senior Megan Atkinson, who has a chance to be the biggest surprise for the Sand Sharks in her senior season. She appeared in only six games a year ago but has blossomed into a strong central defender and should be a key reserve, if not a starter. Miller started 15 games and played in two more in the back line last year and will play a key role again, as will junior Emily Mentrup, who has been a strong, versatile

player for the Sand Sharks the past two seasons. Mentrup could see time anywhere along the back line or in the midfield and provides a strong, veteran presence, having played in 31 games over the past two years. Sophomore Shannon Blair, who played in 18 games (eight starts) as a freshman and recorded an assist, also will see time in the back and the midfield. A trio of freshmen — Los Angeles natives and high school teammates Mandy Preciado and Karen Pimentel and Jacksonville, Fla., product Hanna Crist — also will compete for playing time and have the potential to grow into key roles, and redshirt freshman Brittany Pacifico is working her way back from a knee injury that cost her all of last season, and sophomore Cristen Sturkie will

redshirt because of offseason surgery. Seniors Alexa Muffley and Steph Moldenhauer are back to anchor the Sand Sharks’ strongest overall unit. Muffley and Moldenhauer rank first and second on USCB’s career list for goals, points and game-winning goals. Muffley was the team’s clear MVP as a junior, leading the Sand Sharks in goals (7) and points (16) despite playing a defensive position. Her physical presence in the midfield helped USCB control possession, and she was able to use her size and leaping ability on set pieces to generate a large portion of the Sand Sharks’ scoring opportunities. Moldenhauer appeared in all 19 games a year ago, starting 17, and ranked second on the team in goals (5) and third in points (12). That duo is rejoined in the middle by sophomore Sam Satterlee, who was one of USCB’s best players before a season-ending knee injury cut short her freshman campaign and a second knee surgery wiped out her 2013 season before it began. Junior Pascale Rocca has been a starter or key reserve throughout her two-year career at USCB and will be ex-

pected to continue that trend. The native of Sudbury, Ontario, played in 17 games (eight starts) and has tallied two goals and one assist each of the past two seasons. Fellow junior Marissa Hamm also returns after appearing in 33 games as a key substitute over the past two seasons, and freshman Daniella Borjas was a big-time goal-scorer as a Miami, Fla., high school star and adds strong depth to a talented pool.

defender and a quick-strike forward. She played in all 19 games (17 starts) and spent most of her time anchoring the back, but she also was able to push forward and provide an offensive punch. The Hilton Head Island High School product likely will be used in both roles again in 2014. Freshman Hayley Pina is poised to hold down the other wing and showed signs of being a dangerous offensive threat in the preseason. The Culver City, Calif., product brings speed and tenacity to the position, as well as an instinct for finding the net. Sophomore Kimberly Johnson was a role player who appeared in 14 games off the bench a year ago, but the speedy sophomore from Charleston, S.C., has shown the ability to be a bigger contributor this year. Sophomore Madalyn Adams, a standout softball player at Modesto (Calif.) Junior College, was slowed by injuries in the preseason but looks to be a strong offensive presence when healthy, and freshman MJ Orduna also had a strong preseason. English import Sarah Withers and redshirt freshman Aly Richards also will compete for playing time. The Sand Sharks will count on some of the newcomers to develop quickly, as sophomore Brittany Lorentz and junior Hunter Dye begin the season on the injured list and could be redshirted. When healthy, Lorentz provides a strong offensive presence. One of only two players to start all 19 games last season, she ranked second on the team in goals (5), assists (5) and points (15). Dye has scored one goal in each of her first two seasons at USCB. Sophomore Cameron Croney-Clark will redshirt while recovering from offseason surgery.

Ed

Heberling Head Coach • 52-118-10 Career Record (11th Season) • 19-33-1 At USCB (4th Season)

W

hen the University of South Carolina Beaufort made the decision to launch women’s soccer for the 2011 season, the timing of the move was less than ideal for an incoming coach. The administration knew it would need a special kind of coach to get the program off the ground — one with experience building a program from the ground up. They found that coach in Ed Heberling, who joined USCB in February 2011 as the school’s first women’s soccer coach and quickly assembled a team to begin play in August of that year. Simply fielding a team that first fall was a victory for Heberling and the Sand Sharks, who won only one game in their inaugural season against a highly competitive schedule. However, the foundation was in place for future success, and Heberling’s second team at USCB won nine games, marking one of the biggest improvements in the nation among NAIA teams. Heberling’s three-year plan called for the Sand Sharks to qualify for the Sun Conference Tournament in their second season and finish in the top half of the conference in Year 3. Both of those goals have been realized, and USCB posted a 9-9-1 record and earned the right to host a postseason match for the first time in 2013. A native of Taylorville, Ill., Heberling came to USCB after serving as head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Tri-County Technical College in Pendleton, S.C. Heberling launched the Tri-County Tech women’s program in May 2010 and guided both teams for one season. Before that, Heberling served as head men’s and women’s soccer coach at his alma mater, Iowa

6

Wesleyan College, where he was a second-team all-conference goalkeeper and forward. Heberling was the head coach of the Iowa Wesleyan women from 2003-10 and director of soccer operations from 2004-10. He served as an assistant for the men’s team from 2003-08 and took over as head coach for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He remains Iowa Wesleyan’s alltime wins leader for women’s soccer and ranks second on the all-time wins list for men’s soccer. During his time in Iowa, Heberling also coached at Mount Pleasant Community High School, serving as head coach of the boys team in 2005 and head coach of the girls team in 2010. The Heberling name is a familiar one for Sand Shark fans, as Ed’s wife, Laura, is the school’s head softball coach. The Heberlings live in Okatie with their two dogs, Slurpee and Lexi.

George’s background as a standout goalkeeper at GardnerWebb University, coupled with her experience as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II power Armstrong Atlantic University and her status as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist via the National Strength & Conditioning Association, have helped the Sand Sharks boost their fitness level and Under George’s tutelage, USCB’s goalkeepers have improved statistically each year and allowed a program-low 41 goals in 19 games last season. George has obtained a National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and her “C” License

through the U.S. Soccer Federation. In addition to her work at USCB, she serves as a personal trainer and as a goalkeeper coach for the South Carolina Olympic Development Program. During her playing career, George was a first-team All-America selection by the National Christian College Athletic Association as a goalkeeper at Gardner-Webb, where she still ranks second in school history in shutouts in a season (7.5) and career (14.5). During her six seasons at Armstrong Atlantic, George helped lead the Pirates to a 91-25-13 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2011. The past two summers, George has coached with American International Sports Teams, taking teams to Europe for internaitonal competition.

ike Manning is entering his fourth year with the Sand Sharks and has been a volunteer assistant on coach Ed Heberling’s staff since the inception of the program. A goalkeeper and outside back at Olivet (Mich.) College, Manning played four seasons on the varsity squad and was voted a team captain before graduating in 2008. Manning began his coaching career at Charlotte (Mich.) High School as a junior varsity assistant coach and also coached boys club teams in the Lansing, Mich., area. In 2010, Manning took over the Bluffton High School girls soccer program after serving as an assistant for the Bobcats the previous two season. Manning also serves on the board of directors for Southside Soccer Club and is president of Elite Soccer Showcase.

inead Byrne is in her first year on the coaching staff, but she is no stranger to Sand Shark Soccer fans — let alone to head coach Ed Heberling. Byrne was a member of the inaugural USCB women’s soccer team and played three seasons for the Sand Sharks before graduating with a bachelor of arts in History with a minor in Communication. Prior to coming to USCB, Byrne played for Heberling for one season at Tri-County Technical College. A native of Coventry, England, Byrne has an extensive coaching background in Europe. She coached the Coventry City Girls club for four years, working with U10 and U16 teams that competed in international tournaments throughout Europe. Among the highlights of that experience was a runner-up finish in the International Children’s Games. Byrne has achieved her Level 1 and Level 2 coaching licenses from the Football Association.

he Sun Conference, formerly the Florida Sun Conference, is heading into its 25th season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The institutions in the conference believe in strong educational commitment combined with balanced athletic competition. Originally formed in March 1990 as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (FIAC), The Sun Conference was established as a conference for small independent institutions within the NAIA. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league unveiled its new name, “The Sun Conference” on August 18, 2008 to be inclusive of member schools from Georgia and South Carolina. Under the guidance of commissioner Mark Pope, the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and field and women’s volleyball. The Sun Conference has proven to be one of the top leagues in the NAIA with its teams consistently being recognized among the nation’s best. In 2013-14, 29 teams made national tournament appearances. Individually speaking, student-athletes from The Sun Conference have proven themselves worthy of national recognition

year after year. In 2013-14 alone, 84 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 167 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA All-America ScholarAthletes. Embry-Riddle finished first in The Sun Conference Commissioner’s Cup, which is awarded annually to the strongest athletic program in the league. The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and Design joined in 2004 followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Johnson and Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.) within the last four years, along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools. Football begins its first season as a league-sponsored sport in the fall of 2014 and that sport brings with it two associate members in Edward Waters and Point.

Sand Sharks Had Plenty To Celebrate In 2013

T

he third season of the University of South Carolina Beaufort soccer team’s existence marked the Sand Sharks’ ascent into the top half of the competitive Sun Conference. Not only did the Sand Sharks secure their first season of .500 or better with a 9-9-1 overall mark, but they also finished with a winning record in league play (5-4) and earned the right to host a Sun Conference Tournament quarterfinal match for the first time. USCB’s success on the pitch could be attributed to its willingness to put the team above all, as evidenced by the fact the Sand Sharks did not have a single player voted to the All-Sun Conference team despite finishing fifth in the league standings. The Sand Sharks needed only two games to secure their first win, toppling West Virginia Tech 5-0 on the heels of a season-opening 2-2 tie with Johnson & Wales. USCB also reeled off a five-game winning streak — the longest in the program’s brief history — that included a stirring comeback from a two-goal deficit at Warner and a stunning 2-1 road victory over rival SCAD Savannah. Although the individual accolades did not come, the Sand Sharks had several players put up impressive statistics. Junior Alexa Muffley scored a school-record seven goals — three of them game-winners — and Brittany Lorentz set freshman records for goals (5), assists (5) and points (15). Goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert’s 2.04 goals against average and .753 save percentage were better than her numbers in 2012, when she was named honorable mention All-Sun Conference.

We Are USCB

he University of South Carolina Beaufort is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the nation. Its lineage dates back to the original 1795 charter of Beaufort College. In 1959, by another official act, the South Carolina Legislature created the Beaufort campus of the University of South Carolina on the original site of historic Beaufort College and authorized it to offer the same courses taught at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

In 1994, USCB embarked on a major expansion program. International Paper, a global leader in the paper and packaging industry, donated 80 acres of land to build an additional full-service campus for the university in Bluffton, the region’s fastest growing area. The county government agreed to finance construction of the campus if the university would designate it as a four-year institution of higher learning. When the state approved its new, four-year status, construction began.

In June 2002, the S.C. Commission on Higher Education granted USCB baccalaureate status. In 2004, it was accredited as a Level II baccalaureate degree-granting university. Today, South Carolina’s newest four-year university offers baccalaureate degrees, access to USC’s Extended Graduate Campus classes, and degrees and a wide variety of continuing-education programs at its two full-service campuses — the Historic Beaufort Campus and the Hilton Head Gateway Campus.

Dr. Jane T. Upshaw, Chancellor

When coaches and student-athletes at the University of South Carolina Beaufort say Dr. Jane Upshaw is the No. 1 Sand Shark fan, they aren’t just paying lip service to the university’s chancellor. Dr. Upshaw has come by that title honestly, providing support for athletics that is unparalleled by her peers. And she comes by her affinity for USCB honestly. Dr. Upshaw’s tenure of more than three decades at USCB began in 1981 as an adjunct math professor. In 1986, she was appointed to a full-time faculty position, and in 1996 she moved into the administration as Director of Development. She left the school in 1998, only to return a year later as Dean of the Beaufort campus. In 2002, the Board of Trustees and the Commission on Higher Education granted USCB its baccalaureate status, and Dr. Upshaw was named the school’s first Chancellor.

The NAIA: Champions of Character

In

the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, a dedication to leadership development is balanced with sports accomplishment. A trailblazer in providing equal opportunity for all student-athletes. An expectation of ethical behavior, fairness in competition, access to athletic scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership development. At the core of all of this — character. The seed of the NAIA began in 1937 with the tip-off of a men’s basketball tournament that has become the longest running basketball tournament in the country, celebrating 75 years in 2012. Out of the tournament grew the NAIA, an association of close to 300 member schools and more than 60,000 student-athletes. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational

experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the characterbuilding aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. Most recently, the association opened the doors to the NAIA Eligibility Center, where prospective student-athletes are evaluated for academic and athletic eligibility. It delivers on our larger promise of integrity by leveling the playing field, guiding student-athlete success, and ensuring fair competition. Providing student-athletes a chance to connect with NAIA schools and coaches helps them make the best decision to prepare them for success in both college and athletics.
