Just one starting position player and a handful of pitchers return from last year’s team, but second-year coach Bryan Lewallyn has bolstered the roster with a number of key transfers, and the Sand Shark enter the season ranked 21st in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Top 25 and picked to finish third in The Sun Conference after a runner-up finish a

DeShontay Berry, R.J. Neal and Colton Rudd — as well as fellow seniors Matt Barger, Brandon Collins, Dom Hayes, Keenan Ivey, Ty Main, Conald Mansfield, Adam Miller, Dylan Nasiatka, and Keifer Youmans. The returning players and the corps of newcomers will have the tall task of competing in The Sun Conference, which once again looks to be one of the top league’s in the country with perenial power EmbryRiddle and defending tournament champion St. Thomas looking strong again and Webber International and Warner on the rise.

he best season in the brief history of University of South Carolina Beaufort Sand Shark baseball also marked the end of an era, as most of the team’s initial recruits who helped launch the program in 2009 ended their careers with a school-record 41 wins and USCB’s first trip to the NAIA World Series. The challenge of maintaining that level of success now falls to a team that features a few familiar faces — and a whole bunch of new ones.

Meet the Sand Sharks

Head Coach Bryan Lewallyn

Lewallyn joined USCB as assistant baseball coach in August 2010 and replaced Rick Sofield as the Sand Sharks’ head coach in November 2011. Lewallyn began his baseball career in sales and public relations with the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, before becoming pitching coach with the Pensacola Pelicans professional team of the American Association. With the Pelicans, Lewallyn worked with former major league pitchers and had two of his players sign contracts with major league organizations. He also had the opportunity to attend the Major League Baseball scouting bureau’s scout school program, where he learned the process of evaluating amateur and professional talent. Before arriving at USCB, Lewallyn was the pitching coach at Northwest Florida State College. Lewallyn received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Florida. He was pitcher at Pensacola Junior College from 2001-03, playing on the 2002 state tournament team. His father, Dennis, was a pitcher in the major leagues with the Dodgers, Indians and Rangers and is currently a minor league pitching coach in the Braves organization.

Assistant Coach

Wes Gilmer joined the USCB coaching staff in August 2012 after five years as a player and student assistant coach at Auburn University. Gilmer was a career .286 hitter for the Tigers from 2008-11 before joining the coaching staff as a student assistant in 2012 while completing his degree Gilmer in exercise science. He was named team captain as a senior in 2011. The Tigers went 131-103 in Gilmer’s four years on the squad, including an SEC West title in 2010, when he hit .341 in 82 at-bats with three doubles and two home runs. Auburn went 31-28 during his one season as a student assistant coach.

Sand Shark BaseBall University of South Carolina Beaufort

The University of South Carolina Beaufort is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the nation. Its lineage dates back to the original 1795 charter of Beaufort College. In 1959, by another official act, the South Carolina Legislature created the Beaufort campus of the University of South Carolina on the original site of historic Beaufort College and authorized it to offer the same courses taught at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. In 1994, USCB embarked on a major expansion program. International Paper, a global leader in the paper and packaging industry, donated 80 acres of land to build an additional full-service campus for the university in Bluffton, the region’s fastest growing area. The county government agreed to finance construction of the campus if the university would designate it as a four-year institution of higher learning. When the state approved its new, four-year status, construction began. In June 2002, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education granted USCB baccalaureate status. In 2004, it was accredited as a Level II baccalaureate degree-granting university. Today, South Carolina’s newest four-year university offers baccalaureate degrees, access to USC’s Extended Graduate Campus classes, and degrees and a wide variety of continuing-education programs at its two full-service campuses — the Historic Beaufort Campus and the Hilton Head Gateway Campus.

Richard Gray Complex

The Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville, S.C., has been the home of Sand Shark Baseball since the program’s inception in 2009, and it has provided a significant home-field advantage. Entering the 2013 season, the Sand Sharks are 92-31 at Richard Gray, and they won the NAIA National Championship Opening Round tournament there last May. The complex is located behind the Hardeeville City Hall off Main St. and features four fields — two for baseball and two for softball.
