SA Gymnastics hosted its firs t ever Compulsory Check-Up competition for women Levels 4-6 ill Zionsville, Ind., Oct. 29-30, 2005, along with a Core Workshop of education for coaches. The event's purpose was to provide education to gymnasts and coaches and make the transition of the new routines an easy one for all who attended.

U

There were 410 gymnasts participatillg fro m 24 teams and representing six states. The judges provided each gymnast with a critique of her routine so she would know which areas she needs to improve upon. In addition, USA Gymnastics Women's JO Program Manager Connie Maloney and Vice Chair for Women Tom Koll also gave feedback to the coaches on their gymnasts' routines. It was a great lean"ling exp erience for all who attended . Maloney said, "Both Tom (Koll) and r were pleased with the performance level of the athletes, especially with such a short time of preparation." Koll added, "r was glad to see the coaches, for the most part, have illterpreted the routilles very well. Besides the slow rhythm of the beam routines, the artistic quality required ill the floor and beam routines seem to be presenting the biggest challenge to the gymnasts. Most of the girls are performmg well on the movements requirillg a sharp quality. The challenge seems to be when the text requires a soft supple movement, the gymnasts still want to perform ill a sharp and almost 'robotic' fashion. Although ill the grand scheme of thmgs the deduction for artistry is only 0.30, this deduction will surely separate the best gymnasts at the State Championships. In addition, time spent on the new movements will provide a stronger foundation for optional choreography." Congratulations to Gym-Nation from Ohio who won the Level 4 team title and to Gym-Max who came all the way from California and won the LevelS and Level 6 team titles!
