U.S.A. TRAMPOLINE NEWS Th e National AAU Junior ond Senior Tram pol ine Championships were con t ested in Hou ston, Texas, April 11 -12 at the beautiful new Jewish Community Center by a record 71 com petitors in individual cont est and 10 synchronized team s. The senior women 's gold medal went to Renee Ransom, 1 2-yea r-old top U. S.A. performer from Memphis, Tenn. Vicki Bol inger - second -ranked woman trampolinist in the world - came in second with Mary McDonald, Des Moines, Iowa, th ird. The women 's junior and seniar team trophies went to th e Springfield Trampaline Club, Sprin gfield, Illinoi s. The junior girls' gold medal was won by Troy Kauffman, Southeastern Loui siana College, and a member af the internationally known gy mna stic team of Vannie Edward s, Olympic coach and manage r. Marge Huddleston lost to Troy by 105 of a point to come in a very close second, and Tina Ehman, Memphis, Tenn., took th e third place medal. The winning girls' team was the Springfield Illinois Trampoline Club of Vicki Bolinger, Dian e Haney, Lucy Clouter and Bobbie Grant. The meet was opened by AAU President Jesse Pardue, who conqratulated all of those wha had worked so hard for the sport of frampolining and welcomed all spectators and competitors to Houston , his home town. Th is was the f irst national AAI1 trampoline champion ships to be held sepa rate from gymnastics. It will be the first of many and better to come. Trampolining has been recently included as a separate event in th e Jr. Olympic program and stand s a very gaod chance to be shown as an exhibition sport in the 1 972 Olympic Games in Munich. There wa s an NCAA Trampoline Championship held at the site of th e gymna stic championships in Philadelphia on April 2nd and an NAIA national meet for trampoling held with gymnastics at Menomie, Wi sconsin. On March 7th, there was another first in the sport of trampolining. A National Age Group Champianship Meet was held at the University of Southwestern United State s trom eight years on up through the open division , with each co mpetitor performing a prescribed compulsory exerci se. and two optional exercises. Mis s Judi Ford, Miss Ame rica 1969, wa s on hand to greet the young sters and in spire them to continue in her spo rt of trampolining. The large gymnasium was packed with spectatars from many cities, and B4 competitors put on a shaw that will nat be forgotten for a long time. It was the first opportunity that an 8-year-old had to be a national champion. Trampol ining ha s experienced a tremendous growth period over the last few years, and it appears that the future is almost certain to bring greater success for young aspirants in this sport.

Th e finest group of trampolini sts t o ever ossemble for 0 trampoline meet were in New Orleons on Feb. 28 for th e first trials to make the U.S.A. teom to go to the world championships in Bern , Switzerland, June 19, 1970. It was a day of thrills for the participants who placed high and disappointment for those who had a " bad day." As in any sport, there are always tho se wha lose out because of the tremendou s amount of pressure, lack af ex perience or just plain bad luck. Loyd Huval, gymnastic coach at LSU , New Orlean s, was the meet director for this first trial s to select a U.S.A. team. Loyd, in his usual fine manner, conducted a well-organized meet with the help of the Physical Education Majors Club and public relations staff. Th e judges were wellquali'fiedfor internatianal judging of trampolining. The girl s' event was won by a 13-yea r-old Renee Ransom of Memphi s, Tenn., with a 39.80 effort and a four-way tie for second place between Greer Thompson, Vicki Bolinger, Troy Kauffman and Mary M cDonald with a 37.45 score. Thi s should present a very interesting and unpredictable contest for the second trials as Miss Ransom, Mi ss Thompson and Miss Kauffman will be competing before their home-town crowd of Memphis, Tenn.
