USA Girl Scouts Overseas 2024 Highlights

Sisterhood at Sangam Destination Trip

In March 2024, 31 Girl Scouts from around the world embarked on an unforgettable journey to India as part of USAGSO’s Sisterhood at Sangam Destination trip. Girl Scouts from Spain and Japan joined peers from 10 stateside councils and WAGGGS sisters from Girl Scouts of Japan to celebrate Holi, the vibrant festival of colors, through traditional customs, modern dance, fashion and food. Their adventure continued as they explored the lively city of Pune, visiting temples, local neighborhoods and community organizations This experience fostered cultural understanding, sparked lifelong friendships and gave the girls a new perspective on the world

I am a Girl Scout Juliette as a member of USAGSO. This Destination helped me to feel connected with the wider Girl Scout movement and reinvigorated my passion for Girl Scouting. It was fantastic.

Girls in Aviation Day

Girls in Aviation Day, a program put together by Women in Aviation International, had more than 100 Girl Scouts from USAGSO and Girl Scouts of Japan in attendance on Saturday, September 21. After welcome remarks from Lt. Col. Lundeby, Girl Scouts and their families toured the KC-135 Stratotanker, HH-60W Pave Hawk and the F-15C Eagle. This program was presented in partnership with EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) and was featured on AFN across the West Pacific region. Girls in Aviation Day aims to help girls learn about careers in aviation. This was the second time USAGSO and ERAU partnered together to present this event, and it now cemented as an annual program.

Day Camps

Fall Day Camp in Okinawa

Fall day camp in Okinawa was attended by more than 80 Girl Scouts from across Okinawa. The event was hosted at Torii Beach and despite rain showers throughout the afternoon, Girl Scouts had a great afternoon earning the Girl Scouts Love the Outdoors badge by making rain jars, taking nature walks, making s’mores and learning about fire safety and more. This event was sponsored by Navy Federal Credit Union who donated $250 towards the purchase of supplies.

Mainland Japan Day Camp

Fall day camp in Mainland Japan has become an annual event that celebrates the start of the Girl Scout year and brings together USAGSO Girl Scouts from across the Kanto Plains and Girl Scouts of Japan. The camp was held at Tama Hills, and Girl Scouts spent the day making new friends, creating outdoor art, experiencing new outdoor activities such as rock climbing and archery and building intercultural connection with our Girl Scouts of Japan sisters. There were 139 participants including girls and volunteers from six USAGSO Girl Scout communities and Girl Scouts of Japan.

USA Girl Scouts Overseas Program & Training

Virtual/In-Person Hybrid Programs

In 2024, virtual/in-person hybrid programs were a big success including:

Maidentrip Film Screening (November 2023): Over 400 participants took part in a virtual screening room and local, in-person watch parties for the film Maidentrip. This event was supported with a watch party guide and financial support from USAGSO to Overseas Communities and troops hosting events

Month of the Military Child: Life Beyond Earth (April 2024): This yearly programming was hosted in partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Nine campuses in Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Italy and South Korea hosted over 100 Girl Scouts for the virtual program livestream and hands-on STEM activities.

STEMinist Programs

Our popular STEMinist series continued in 2024 with monthly virtual sessions introducing Girl Scouts to real life STEM superheroes and giving them the chance to actually participate in science, technology, engineering and math through engaging, hands-on activities.

The STEMinist program expanded to include four in-person events, providing 165 Girl Scouts with the opportunity to explore the world of robotics in Germany (November 2023) and Belgium (February 2024) and exploding science in Taiwan (March 2024).

Girl Scouts at all three Camp USAGSO sessions also participated in STEMinist activities where they harnessed the power of the sun, creating art with solar print paper and building solar-powered robots.

Camp USAGSO

Camp USAGSO was back in action in 2024 and featured three different sessions- Taiwan (March 2024), Switzerland (June 2024) and Germany (August 2024). There were 164 campers that attended these programs, where they were able to experience traditional camp activities like archery, tie-dying, ropes courses, fireside singing and more, while taking in a truly unique camp setting.

Girl Scouts at our Taiwan camp earned the Outdoor Journey, complete with a Take Action Project designed to increase awareness about the Leave No Trace principles.

And thanks to a $14,500 grant from the World Foundation, USAGSO was able to provide scholarships for 39 girls, who each received between $200-400 in financial assistance, allowing them to experience the joy and impact of Girl Scout ca tances.

The experiences looked different for every camper, but the takeaway was the same- you are strong and capable and these Girl Scouts believe in you. We met so many new friends and made so many incredible memories in Switzerland.

Girl Scout Cookie Program

Despite the limitations primarily due to the restrictions around the importation and sale of American food products outside of the United States, USAGSO provides a robust cookie program around the world. During the 2024 Girl Scout Cookie Program, USAGSO Girl Scouts sold or donated 325,932 packages of cookies, a 13% increase over the previous cookie season.

Also in 2024, for the first time, we had 33 Stellar Seller girls who sold 500+ boxes of cookies each. The number one top cookie seller was from the U.S. Virgin Islands and sold 1,352 boxes of cookies. In addition, USAGSO expanded in-person cookie sales in Madrid and Kwajalein, which contributed to 2% of the USAGSO in-person cookie sales.

Cookie Season Kicks Off with a Global Cookie Rally

More than 500 Girl Scouts owned their magic and got ready to rock the 2024 Girl Scout Cookie Season at our 4th Annual Cookie Rally, hosted by pop singer/songwriter, Kristina Lachaga. Girl Scouts expanded on the five skills gained through the cookie program (goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, business ethics) with interactive games, hands-on activities and interaction with inspirational guest speakers including:

Charlotte Alden - Designer and Owner of lottie nyc

Annabelle Chang - 17-year-old Founder of Annabelle's Book Club LA

Devon Harp of Zip-A-Dee Tees - Designs theme park apparel

Adult Trainings

Volunteers are the heart of Girl Scouting and without them, we could not bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls across the globe. In 2024, volunteers had several opportunities, both virutally and in-person, to expand on their skills, build connections with fellow volunteers and stay upto-date on USAGSO programming.

Four Overseas Management Team Committee (OCMT) Retreats served 64 volunteers in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Japan and virtually. 40 participants from more than 15 countries connected live during our Virtual Adult Learning Conference. Topics covered included Supporting Gen Z Youth, Troop Travel, Third Culture Kids and Conflict Management. Overseas Updates, led by USAGSO staff, were hosted quarterly with an average attendance of 40 volunteers.

Microgrants

add copy

Thanks to a generous World Foundation grant in 2024, USA Girl Scouts Overseas was able to expand access to high-quality programming and leadership development through our microgrant program. This program plays a vital role in supporting volunteer development, expanding girl programming and enhancing recruitment efforts in overseas communities. By providing targeted funding, we help increase the quality and accessibility of the Girl Scout experience and strengthened connections between USAGSO members and Girl Scouts worldwide.

Th3 2024 grant empowered 34 microgrant recipients across 24 overseas communities in 12 countries, directly benefiting over 2,000 Girl Scout members
