ENTENDIENDO EL MENSAJE DEL ZANPANTZAR

CADA REGIÓN, CADA LOCALIDAD, TIENE SUS PROPIAS COSTUMBRES Y TRADICIONES. EL PAÍS VASCO LAS GUARDA COMO VERDADEROS TESOROS. ESTUDIANTES DE USAC VISITARON A XABIER GARATE, EL ARTESANO QUE SE ENCARGA DE CREAR VERSIONES DIFERENTES DEL GIGANTE “ZANPANTZAR”, UNA FIGURA MUY REPRESENTATIVA EN EL CARNAVAL DE IRUN.

A través de su disfraz lanza cada año un mensaje cargado de reivindicaciones.

De manos de su creador, conocieron que el gigante, vestido en esta ocasión de Pierrot, “ENTRE TRISTE Y ESPERANZADO”, este Carnaval iba a denunciar las guerras que montan los mandatarios y las padecen los pueblos.

Nuestros estudiantes fueron los primeros en ver al personaje en pleno proyecto.

Un secreto que guardaron hasta el día de su desfile.

It was very interesting to see the whole process from drawing all the way to brought to life. Xabier has been building these models for the better part of his life and is a true legend in his area. It was amazing to meet the mastermind of these great models. It was also very cool to see the building process as it is very in depth.

It was very interesting to see the Zanpantzar. The giant was surprisingly light and very well created. I like how he designed the Zanpantzar.

This field trip was really interesting and exciting. It was a one of a kind experience especially since we were some of the first people to be able to see the Zanpantzar ahead of the start of Carnival. The explanation that Xabier provided for us regarding the construction and design of the giant was very helpful to better understand the importance and relevance that these art products provide to the Carnival. This was a great way to be immersed into the culture and to practice both Spanish and Basque at the same time. Overall, it was a really special experience that I would recommend to anybody that has the option to experience it.

Tener la oportunidad de visitar el estudio de Xabier y ver el Zanpantzar de Irun antes de que saliese a la calle, fue algo que recordaré siempre, incluso diría que fue algo mágico. Los Carnavales son fiestas para los vascos muy especiales que las celebran con gran entusiasmo. Nosotros participamos con ellos y nos acogieron como si fuéramos uno más. Por eso, yo, al igual que todos los que tuvimos esta oportunidad, estaremos eternamente agradecidos por esta experiencia tan singular y peculiar.

¿Qué puedo decir de la visita a Xabier Garate? Solo dar las gracias por esta experiencia.

Fue un honor conocerle y visitar su taller. Pudimos ver la estructura del Zanpantzar que estaba preparando. ¡Increíble, pero fuimos los primeros en verlo! Nos demostró con sus explicaciones el amor, la dedicación y el esfuerzo que realiza día a día para llegar al resultado final. Un trabajo difícil, duro a veces, pero que le aporta éxito y felicidad. Nos comentó cuánto tiempo llevaba trabajando en esta labor y nos habló de la cantidad de personajes de Carnaval que ha ideado. Todos los años intenta una temática diferente que esté relacionada con los acontecimientos que están sucediendo en el mundo

Días después de esta visita fuimos a Irun. Vimos bailar y desfilar al gigante engalanado con su vestido y todos sus complementos; y pensamos:¡qué suerte hemos tenido, nosotros ya lo habíamos visto cuando todavía no estaba terminado!

Seeing the process of constructing the Zanpantzar was quite an experience. I could feel all the joy and passion Xabier Garate has towards his projects and in continuing this tradition each year. The process is quite intensive and starts the year before. Sketches are made as the idea is conceptualized. Once the construction begins, from the woodwork to the painting, the Zanpantzar and the spirit of spring come alive. The smell of freshly cut wood and paint permeated the air and added to the magic of the moment. Standing inside the wooden structure of the Zanpantzar was quite fun, and I cannot imagine how heavy it will be once it is completed. I loved how Sr. Garate said that he doesn’t have a favorite Zanpatzar, but that his favorite is the one that he currently works on. Once a project is completed, he focuses on the next steps for a new project. This mindset is quite inspiring, and I hope to apply it in my own life. I am excited to participate in the parade and learn more about this Basque festival!

VESTIMENTAS Y RITMO EN SUS CANCIONES Y BAILES, A

LOS ESTUDIANTES DE USAC.

LOS CALDEREROS, UNA TRIBU SIEMPRE ALEGRE Y DIVERTIDA QUE DEJÓ UN

BUEN SABOR DE BOCA A NUESTROS ESTUDIANTES.

Desde que estoy viviendo en Donostia, una de las celebraciones que más me ha sorprendido por lo diferente que es a las que estoy acostumbrada, es la fiesta de “Caldereros”

Según me han comentado, con esta festividad se quiere recordar a los gitanos que todos los años venían a vender sus productos por Carnaval. Actualmente “Zíngaros” y “Caldereros” recorren las calles de la Parte Vieja de Donostia llevando sartenes y cucharas

Sorprenden las ropas, los trajes que llevan y la música que tocan. Los hombres van vestidos de negro. Un pantalón, una blusa y una chaqueta americana, con monedas que complementan sus vestimentas. Llevan en la mano para hacer ruido, una sartén y una cuchara de palo Las mujeres llevan vestidos muy coloridos. Una falda larga con flores, una blusa de colores vistosos, un pañuelo en la cabeza con monedas colgando y collares y pulseras

Pasean animales por las calles y cantan y tocan acompañados de sartenes y martillos canciones muy pegadizas.

Fue una experiencia en la que participé de lleno y no la olvidaré Os recomiendo que la conozcáis y participéis vistiendo y actuando como los locales
