Nearly 54 years ago, a few local business owners who felt that outdoor arts and crafts could become a traditional success, started what is now today called the Uptown Art Fair. What started in 1963 as a small event with artists propping their pieces of work against the curb to sell their wares, has grown into a nationally recognized, top-ranked, three-day fine arts festival attracting almost 400,000 people in just three days.

The Uptown Art Fair attracts nearly 400,000 people to the corner of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street. In 2016 this was due to the support of 49 sponsors, 69 local businesses and organizations, and over 600 volunteers. This community event provides a free cultural experience for all visitors, with most attendees citing the artwork as their reason for attending.
