Upton SUMMER 2022

Update @UptonHouseSch

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS • PRIZE DAY SEUSSICAL • NEW BROADCASTING FACILITY • SPORTS DAYS

Welcome from Mrs Thornton It has truly been a memorable term at Upton House School. This packed edition of the Upton Update illustrates the incredible celebration, hard work and success the children have enjoyed and delivered this term.

Thank you, Upton House Families, Mrs Richards, Mrs Ainley and Mrs Hunter, for the biggest Summer Fair in the school’s history. What a wonderful afternoon we all had. It brought so many families together and the children had an amazing time.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee set the tone for celebration and jubilation, with so many wonderful events. It was a pleasure to welcome children from surrounding Windsor schools to Upton, broadcasting live from the Jubilee Studios daily. The Jubilee Bake Off, The Long Walk song and the wonderful Jubilee picnic. All great fun and a fitting way to celebrate her Majesty the Queen. We are immensely proud to be in Windsor in the heart of it all. This year we have been frequent visitors to The Long Walk performing Mr McEvoy’s incredible song first A Brand New Start, waving to the Royals and then performing The Long Walk song.

We say goodbye to our wonderful F6 girls. I am immensely proud of how much they have achieved. F6 offers and scholarships this year are again to be celebrated. 41 offers and 17 scholarships. Our F6 girls leave us to start their new adventures in incredible Senior schools. You will certainly be missed. We celebrated their time at Upton with a delicious afternoon tea for parents and our Leavers’ service on the last day, where ex-Uptonians, Gia and Daisy, came back to speak to the girls about what to expect at Senior school and how Upton had prepared them so well. Both inspirational speakers, thank you girls.

Our live streaming audience continues to grow around the world, and alongside this I am delighted to welcome parents back into school again. Our Prize Day speakers, Mrs June Gratton LLBHons and Barrister at Law, and Professor Ben Garrod were inspirational, and I know enjoyed by all.

Thank you, parents, for all your support and enthusiasm, and thank you Upton staff for all your dedication and team spirit. Most importantly, thank you children. You are at the heart of everything we do at Upton and I am immensely proud of you all. Wishing you all a wonderful summer holiday! Mrs Rhian Thornton

Schools’ Jubilee Week Daily Broadcasting The Mayor of Windsor, Mr John Story, wanted one school to broadcast live each morning during the Platinum Jubilee Week. We volunteered and recruited five schools to broadcast from the Jubilee Studios: Dedworth Middle School, St Peter’s CofE Middle School, Trevelyan, The Windsor Girls’ School, The Windsor Boys’ School alongside Upton. Each morning, two schools broadcast live and using some pre-recorded footage. We interviewed the Mayor, Platinum Jubilee Committee Chair, Head Gardener at Windsor Castle, and Windsor Panto legend, Kevin Cruise. The schools reported on a breadth of topics including concerts, the banquet, interviewed members of the public and tested them with Tea Time trivia, “Merch search”. We also live streamed and hosted the classical concert. The six live streams had over 23,000 views.

Windsor Learning Partnership Jubilee Music Concert On Wednesday 25th May, as part of the Windsor Schools’ live broadcast, Upton House School hosted the Jubilee Music Concert for The Windsor Learning Partnership. The concert featured a number of performers from Upton House, Trevelyan Middle School, The Windsor Boys’ School and The Windsor Girls’ School. The children ranged from 7 to 18 years and there were performances on the saxophone, flute, piano, violin and cello as well as singing. The music incorporated classical music, jazz, tunes from musical theatre and an original composition for a film score. The three musicians chosen to represent Upton were William (F2) who played Allegro by Thomas Attwood on the piano, Eleni (F5) who played Chanson Triste by Tchaikovsky on the violin and Joanna (F5) who played Bourrées I and II for Unaccompanied Violoncello by J.S. Bach on the cello. It was wonderful to hear such great performances from our next generation of musicians and inspiring to know that there is so much talent out there. Mr Craig McEvoy 2

The Long Walk Jubilee Song We were extremely privileged when James Manwaring invited us to take part in the writing of a song to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. A small group of our F6 girls, alongside children from each of the Windsor schools, spent a day in Windsor Castle with the songwriter Emily Barden composing the song which would be known as The Long Walk. The song incorporates the ideas of all of the children who were involved and was an incredible success. The Jubilee Choir was formed from some 350 children from different Windsor schools. Rehearsals began and were soon transformed into performances at different sites around Windsor. The grand finalé was a performance on The Long Walk in front of a huge and supportive crowd on the weekend of the Platinum Jubilee. The event was also recorded by the BBC. It was an incredible experience to be part of something so memorable. www.bit.ly/uupjwsong

Jubilee Picnic The finalé of Jubilee Schools’ Week was a wonderful Jubilee themed picnic in the garden for all the children. There was a sea of red, white and blue, as well as children and staff dressed as kings, queens, soldiers and corgis! We had delicious sandwiches and cakes and great fun. We were delighted to be able to invite parents to join us for a cupcake at the end of the day. The atmosphere was wonderful, a real family affair.

Mayor’s Tea Party Cake Bake As part of Jubilee Schools´ Week, children from the Royal Borough were invited by the Mayor, John Story, to attend a Mayoral Platinum Jubilee Party at The Guildhall. Two representatives from Upton joined other local children for an afternoon of crown making, meeting the Mayor and the Town Crier. We also had a chance to look around the museum, which is well worth a visit. Everyone celebrated with a drink and Jubilee cupcake. Mayor Story even brought his party crown when he came to visit us at school as part of his last day in office.

Jubilee Decorated Cake Competition During the Platinum Jubilee Schools’ Week, Mrs Hill organised a Jubilee Cake Decorating competition. The children had to decorate cupcakes or one cake. Martin Cabble-Reid, known to the children as Kevin Cruise from the Windsor Panto cast, came to judge along with Sally Dow, a former Upton parent and a great baker. They were looking for creativity and originality based on the Platinum Jubilee theme. There were over eighty cakes, and the competition was fierce. So much effort and thought had gone into the designs, depicting all things royal. Prizes were awarded to each of the year groups and the overall winners chosen by the judges were brothers Alfie and Harry. Their prize was afternoon tea with Mrs Thornton, which was a real treat.

Upton House Sport IAPS Swimming Finals On Saturday, 11th June, Upton House competed at the IAPS National Swimming Championship Finals at the London Aquatic Centre. It was the first time ever the school has qualified for the finals. Our mixed relay team with Alice, Sophia, Emma and Elena finished 11th overall after an amazing performance; they improved their qualifying time by more than six seconds. In the individual races, Elena finished 16th overall in the individual U10 freestyle. Emma qualified for the final of the U10 butterfly. The final was an extremely close race with the first three places separated by only three hundredths of a second. She finished third and won the bronze medal. Swimming is a key sport for Upton and we will continue working hard to prepare the children for more meets and competitions. We can’t wait to be back to IAPS finals next year!

IAPS Girls Football For the first time ever, Upton took a group of F5 and F6 girls to compete in the U11 IAPS football festival. The tournament was held at Ardingly College and the girls played superbly well throughout. The format was a league system with the top two teams playing off for the cup, whilst the third and fourth teams playing for the plate. The Upton girls battled extremely well finishing third. A fantastic achievement considering we didn’t have much time to practise. Looking forward to coming back next year. It was a fantastic afternoon of football and well done to the U11 girls for putting girls’ football on the map again at Upton. We will certainly do more for girls’ football. #letgirlsplay 5

IAPS Cricket Festival On a beautiful sunny morning a group of Form 6 girls set off for the first IAPS U11 Cricket Festival. There was a lot of excitement as we had never been to an IAPS cricket festival before and so didn’t really know what to expect. The festival was played in three pools. Upton came second in the pool so qualified for the plate and finished third in the plate. The team’s bowling and batting was very good. We are very proud of the girls as their attitude all day was magnificent despite the hot weather.

Cricket Season & House Cricket During the term we have been having fixtures for all the Prep children against various schools. We all loved seeing the children with their brand-new cricket whites. We also organised our first ever cricket tournament at the York Club for F6. We had 6 schools attending and we all had a great time. The Prep House Cricket tournament took place at the end of the term. The children showed great cricket skills and how much they have improved. After a very close competition, St George were the winners. Well done everyone!

F2 Parents and Children Football Match Form 2 children and their parents played various football matches at the York Club. It was a lovely afternoon of games enjoyed by everyone. The level of the parents’ game was impressive, and we will certainly repeat the experience. We all had an appetising match tea afterwards prepared by Adam, our amazing chef. Thanks to everyone for making this such a special event. 6

Welcome to Ms Peak Head of English For the last 3 years Ms Peak has been teaching Middle and High School English at ACS Egham International School. Before that, she taught English at GCSE and A level at Windsor Girls’ School. She has also taught at ISL Woking and the American School of Recife in Brazil.

For how long have you been an English teacher? I have been teaching English since 1996 when I moved to Brazil and taught English as a second language to teenagers and adults in Brasilia.

Some book recommendations for the children to read over the summer? Bursting with fresh ideas and perspectives, these books are a great way for you and your children to explore a wide range of literary styles.

What year groups will you be teaching at Upton? Years 4, 5 and 6. What will be the focus of your lessons? My lessons will focus on the fundamental skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, although I will be looking to build strong readers as this particular skill underpins all other subjects in the curriculum. I want the students to love reading and explore the world around them!

Meet Akissi. She is a cheeky and confident little girl, getting up to no good in her town in the Ivory Coast with her big brother Fofana and her pet monkey Boubou. You will love the bright illustrations and the slapstick comedy.

What is your favourite book for children? The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton. One of my favourite places to escape to is The Enchanted Forest. Here, magic is everywhere and in the middle of the forest grows the most amazing tree ever: the Faraway Tree. This tree is enormous, a giant of a tree, and its branches touch the sky. But, the best thing about this tree is that you can climb to the top and visit lots of different lands.

There is a ‘soul bird’ who lives inside us all. This special bird opens and closes the drawers of our soul, in which we keep all our feelings. It’s beautifully written, with simple stylistic illustrations.

What’s the best thing about being an English teacher? It is a real privilege to work with young people and watch them grow and fulfil their potential.

There are no polar bears left on Bear Island. At least, that’s what April’s father tells her. This is a beautiful story that reminds us all of the reality of climate change and encourages us all to play a part in making the world a better place, however small.

When you are not teaching, what do you like to do in your free time? I love to be out in nature and the wild spaces in the world, hiking and admiring trees! Wellbeing is important to me and I like to practise yoga and meditation when I can as it is vital to find some peace and stillness in our mad modern world. 7

Senior Choral Competition On Tuesday 26th April, the Upton House Senior Choir was invited to take part in the Heathfield School Prep Choral Competition. Our choir, comprised of a mixture of Form 5 and Form 6 children, is a non-selective choir in the sense that anyone who wished to be part of the choir had the opportunity to join without having to do auditions. This was our first live choir performance since the beginning of the pandemic and the children were greatly looking forward to it. Each of the schools that took part had to perform two songs. Our first song was a traditional American gospel song entitled The Welcome Table, which looks forward to the prospect of an afterlife in the promised land. Our second song was an original song written by me, entitled A Brand New Start, which was written to reflect upon and remember what we as a country, as families and as individuals went through during the pandemic. It expresses our desire to leave difficult times behind us and to look forward to the promise of a brighter future without

restrictions. There were three judges who gave a brief reflective summary of each of the performances afterwards. Our children sang beautifully with passion and commitment, and we were all delighted to be voted the winners of the competition! It was a wonderful day and we all felt immensely proud to represent Upton House on the day. Mr Craig McEvoy

Ballet Showcase On Tuesday 21 June, parents were invited to a short demonstration of Grade 4 ballet from some of our F6 pupils. Information was also given to parents about the exam structure for pupils participating in ballet from F1 upwards. Dance plays a key role in the school and we offer ballet, acro and lyrical jazz. Girls and boys can enjoy ballet from Nursery up to F6. We follow the Royal Academy of Dance syllabi, which is the leading dance board in the world, and we have recently introduced the option to take full ballet exams. The first exam sessions took place recently and it was a huge success…100% pass, well done Upton! Miss Megan Rhodes

Broadcasting Facility The Jubilee Studios With the introduction of Broadcasting as a club, plans to add it to the curriculum and the continued significant attendance and feedback of the live streams of our school events we decided to rehome Broadcasting. We wanted to create a permanent space, release prime teaching space, reduce effort in setting up events and continue live streaming most of the school events. In a previously unused space, we constructed a new mezzanine floor in the top of the Hall during the Easter holidays and the first three weeks of term. The broadcast suite houses two studios which hosts two presenters in each, plus connections to the Hall. We direct and control from the central room, as well as post mastering using studio grade software editing and teaching. So far, we have delivered multi studio events in the hall during the Jubilee Schools’ Week, the Open morning including live sports from the netball court and singing from the Hall, Pedal Push, three form assemblies and of course Seussical. Future events such as musical soirées, parent assemblies, Nativities, etc will be greatly enhanced with this facility. Cameras, audio, and technical equipment are permanently installed saving set up time, reducing risk and improving the quality of events. The Broadcasting Club have used this facility this term recording interviews with the Mayor, the Head Gardener of Windsor Castle and Kevin Cruise as well as the classes. We have named the facility the Jubilee Studio as our goal is to create another legacy for the school that is long lasting and unique to Upton. Mr Marcus Thornton

Nursery Pedal Push What an amazing event and support from the children and their families raising £2,200 for the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice charity. It is such a phenomenal amount and so appreciated by the good cause to which it is going. We are so proud of the children and their enthusiasm for taking part. Despite the weather, everyone enjoyed participating. The determination and concentration of the faces of children was wonderful. Thank you so much for being a part of this event.

Pre-Nursery & Nursery Sports Day The Pre-Nursery and Nursery children took part in a fun filled morning celebrating sports day. We were lucky to have parents and grandparents on site for the event. The F6 children were fantastic with all their help and support in guiding the little ones to navigate the obstacle course and organising them in lanes for the running races. We were blessed with the sun shining on us and the children all looked so happy to be showing their sports skills to their families. We are so proud of the children. They showed great spirit and teamwork. What superstars!

Nursery & Transition School Trips The Nursery children had such a wonderful time at Beale Park where they continued to develop their understanding of the world around them. They got to see a wide variety of animals and reptiles including zebras, deer, and peacocks. A train ride around the park proved to be a huge success and lead to some wonderful conversations from the children. There were very tired but happy children on the journey home. Transition had an equally wonderful time at Hobbledown Farm. The sun was shining, and the children were entertained with lots of exploring and things to do. There were animal experiences, mazes to explore, birds, reptiles, alpacas, camels, ponies, and more. The amazing play areas were certainly a highlight of the children’s day. They were able to bounce high with their friends on the trampolines or to bravely explore Fern’s Castle and Hobbledown Village. We were so impressed as the children climbed high and worked as a team to complete the course, scaling wooden towers, exploring underground tunnels and aerial walkways.

Transition & Nursery Sing Songs Transition filled the marquee with the sound of singing as they performed their end of year Sing Song to a full crowd. They wowed their audience as they sang their hearts out to six quite complicated songs, an impressive feat for anyone never mind some of the youngest members of our school. There was a joyful and upbeat Let’s Go Fly a Kite to kickstart the show, ending with a beautiful rendition of A Million Dreams, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. After Transition, it was time for Nursery’s Sing Song. What a lovely morning listening to the children sing so beautifully for their parents, singing songs in Mandarin, French and Spanish. It was lovely having the parents join in with I Like the Flowers and our popular penguin song; you all make wonderful penguins! We are very proud of the children. They all did so well!

Pre-Prep Sports Day What a wonderful day we had for the first Transition and Pre-Prep Sports day in quite a while. The children competed in sprints, hurdles, relays, shot put and long jump. After lunch, the F2 children delighted us all with a long distance run. Such stamina and determination were demonstrated in children so young. Mr Kingston spoilt us all with a delicious BBQ and the day ended with a celebration of the children’s achievements. It really was a fantastic day and even those who couldn’t make it did not miss out - Mr Thornton expertly live streamed the whole event. Thank you so much to all involved.

Prep Sports Day Our Prep sports day at The York Club was a day to remember. Many parents were there in person and the event was live streamed to those who couldn’t make it. Not many schools live stream all these events. We had 300 viewers from 10 different countries. The children had a great time competing and cheering each other on. The BBQ was also delicious. We had winners in discus, javelin, shot put, sprint, hurdles, relay and long distance! But only one House could win at the end of the day, and it was St Andrew, congratulations! Olivia in F3, Ehron in F4, Emma in F5 and Ruby in F6 were Victrix/Victor Ludorum for each year. Ruby also won the cup as overall winner of the day. Well done to everyone for taking part. Great teamwork!

Seussical We travelled to the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss with our summer production of Seussical. Again, we pushed the boundaries of performance and technology to deliver a hybrid live production onsite as well as live streaming. We wanted the children to have more of a semblance of an authentic production with a live audience. Confidence and a true theatrical experience are built by hearing the roar of the crowd in front of you. This approach, mixed with our impressive ‘techpertise’, enabled us to stream this to over 21 countries and 1,950 of our extended families to enjoy the plethora of talent and wonderful performance. In the Hall, we combined green screen with real props, morphing real and digital in a Seussistical way. The two digital screens gave the Hall audience the digital view alongside live green screen performances. The Marquee had the large projection augmented with the children dancing, running and performing numerous times in person. The online audience had a non stop digital experience, plus a permanent record of the event for all.

Seussical transports you to a totally different world, which amalgamates the bonkers but brilliant tales of Dr. Seuss. The powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! This truly felt like a story that reflected our Upton values. It is certainly the most musically dynamic show I have directed at Upton. We super charged the audio with all F6s mic’d up, meaning 450 mics on/off. We delivered 140 programmed events, 36 backdrop changes including recorded performances from 2-year-olds in pre-nursery, nursery, transition and F1. Our Uptonians showed real enthusiasm and professionalism during rehearsals, and we were all in awe of their outstanding performances in the shows. I hope the message of A person’s a person, no matter how small stays with us all. Here’s the Seussical story: www.bit.ly/uhsseusstory Miss Jessica Duncan

Prep Prize Day Prize Day was once again time for us all to celebrate the children’s achievements this year. All the children have worked hard and have achieved great things in all areas of school life. We were joined by June Gratton, an ex‑parent, who had an inspiring story to tell about how she became Queen’s Council. Our F6 leavers were presented with cups and prizes to celebrate their Upton Journey. They have all done extremely well and will be leaving us as successful, confident young ladies. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for them. They have acted as role models for the younger children and we wish them all the best in their new adventures. F5 also enjoyed having lunch with Ben Garrod and discussing all things science! Mrs Kate Newcombe

Pre-Prep Prize Day Pre-Prep’s Prize Day took place at the end of term with huge excitement as usual. This year, as in pre-pandemic times, we celebrated with the Transition children, who each received a certificate in recognition of completing their EYFS years. We were very lucky to have Professor Ben Garrod as our guest speaker and presenter of prizes. Professor Garrod is an evolutionary biologist and expert primatologist who has dedicated the last ten years to ape conservation projects across the globe. He is also an award-winning TV presenter, and has spent several years in Uganda developing a chimpanzee

15

conservation field site for the Jane Goodall Institute. He thoroughly entertained us with his wonderful stories. Well done to all our prize winners this year, but importantly, as always, congratulations to all the children for a truly fantastic year. Each one of them has worked so hard; it has been a privilege to teach and get to know them. They have grown in so many ways to become confident, happy and resilient individuals. Mrs Emma Pritchard

School Trips F1 to Marwell Zoo This term F1 visited Marwell Zoo. The weather was beautiful and the children behaved impeccably. I wish the same could be said for the animals! The wallabies proved to rather elusive this year as was the tiger. However, the children were thrilled to see, amongst others, the rhinos, zebras, giraffes and even the snow leopard. A wonderful time was had by all.

F2 to Woburn Safari Park F2 started the day with a road safari through rhinos, elephants, giraffes, lions and bears. Luckily the animals were not able to enter the coach despite some of F2’s concerns! The children were fascinated by the penguins and sea lions who put on quite the show for us! They watched a monkey demonstration and meerkats being fed; very entertaining! Ever since our trip they have continued to share all the interesting facts they learnt. A great day out for all!

F3 to Waltham Place After much anticipation, the day had finally arrived for an excited F3 to visit Waltham Place, a working, mixed, organic farm. We were out in nature exploring the flora, fauna and food in lovely grounds. Did you know we have around 270 species of bee in Britain? We fed the Tamworth pigs and saw the Jersey cows trotting into the milking parlour. Searching for mini beasts in leaf mould was exciting as it was essential to dig deep with our hands, literally! We found millipedes, woodlice, worms, snails and much more. F3 said it was the best trip ever and they want to go back!

F6 to Jubilee Superbloom F6 went to the Tower of London to see the Jubilee Superbloom and then into the Tower of London. The immersive floral Superbloom brings a wonderful natural beauty to this urban space and introduces a new biodiverse habitat for wildlife. It celebrates the value of nature for our wellbeing. They had an amazing time entering the medieval moat and were transported through a field of blooms around the famous fortress in celebration of HM The Queen’s 70 years on the throne. The girls really enjoyed the last school trip of their life at Upton. 16

La Grande Assiette Café F6 pupils stepped through the doors of the school dining room to find themselves transported to a pavement café in Paris, La Grande Assiette. Greeted by staff waiters and waitresses they were seated at small tables and shown a menu of French delicacies. The girls ordered in French and then sat back to enjoy the French music whilst waiting for their citron pressé or diabolo à la menthe to arrive. There was much excitement as the children decided whether to try snails or frogs legs! The girls have been practising how to express their opinion in French and although there were a few who exclaimed je déteste les cuisses de grenouille, it was lovely to also hear quite a few declaring J’adore les escargots! For dessert there was a choice of crêpes or tarte au citron, and then it was time to request l’addition, to add up what they had ordered and make sure they paid with the correct amount of Euros. An enjoyable afternoon and we managed to avoid all airport and ferry delays! Madame Morris

Frozen Musical in London We were finally able to take the Prep children and staff to see Frozen. It was so wonderful to be in a theatre again. The children thought it was an incredible show and they were singing along with great excitement. There were gasps when the special effects lit up the stage with ice and snowflakes. Olaf melted our hearts. It certainly deserved the standing ovation.

Upton House Families UHF organised a Vintage Summer Fair that was hugely popular. More than 140 families attended. The sun was shining, and the school was filled with stalls and activities organized by each form. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the hot dogs, ice creams and the raffle! It was lovely to see so many Upton families attending the event which will certainly be a “must” in the years to come! UHF raised over £1,800. This term UHF also held the pre‑loved uniform sale on changeover day which brought in over £1,600. Thank you so much to everyone who not only donates their pre‑loved uniform but also buys the uniform which not only raises funds for UHF but also saves the planet! This year UHF has raised over £16,000 which brought us to our goal in purchasing innovative tech equipment for the school and new play equipment for EYFS. Thank you everyone for attending the events and your contributions - it’s you that makes UHF successful in raising funds for school extras and most importantly bringing the Upton community together!

Staff News This term we say goodbye to Mrs Sutherland. Mrs Barbara Sutherland has been a Teaching Assistant at Upton for 22 years. She has supported, nurtured and loved each little Uptonian in her class or at tea, along the way. She is a calm, dignified, elegant lady and the utmost professional. We will miss you and look forward to hearing about your exciting adventures beyond Upton. We also had some other exciting news. Mrs Lewin’s husband, Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel Lewin, was awarded an OBE by the Queen for his services with the United Nations mission in South Sudan during the 2020 Corona virus pandemic. They both went to Buckingham Palace to accept this huge recognition.

18

Farewell to Form 6 Each year, at this time, we say goodbye to F6. This year the girls have taken their roles and enthusiasm for Upton to another level once more. Supporting the youngest Uptonians, achieving great success in Senior school assessments and scholarships, and displaying so much talent from ballet, academia, sport, music and art! They are all wonderful, capable and confident young ladies ready for the next chapters in their education. They have laughed a lot, given so much, joined in everything from running club in all weathers, to broadcasting club, to initiatives to save the planet! They love a good debate and are a credit to Upton and their parents. We will miss you all very much. I look forward to our paths crossing at different future events and of course welcoming you back for the Year 7 annual London Theatre Trip. This year our current Year 7 went with F6 to see Six in the West End. We all had an amazing time. Upton is your family and you are welcome back any time to see us. I am so proud of you all.
