Weekly Newsletter Summer 2018 Week 2 It was a pleasure to visit Sir William Perkins’s and Wycombe Abbey again this week to meet with the Heads and Senior Staff. Both schools value Upton girls very much and it was a delight to see past Upton pupils such as Olivia, Amrita and Amy, all so happy and doing so well. The feedback from the Senior Schools and Heads is incredibly positive about our girls. We will issue a helpful guide to Senior Schools with Open Morning dates and Year 6 assessment dates next half term. This may assist Form 4 and 5 parents. Form 6 are working very hard on their ‘genius hour projects’ with Miss Smith. Each pupil chose their focus, did their research and design, and now are making their piece. They will present their work later this term. This year the projects range from making furniture, books, squishies and a dog agility set. Their projects, like the girls, are varied and are already showing what makes them unique. The girls’ work will be available to see on Prize Day. We are delighted to have successfully achieved the Gold Award this week for our sporting ethos and activities. The assessor wrote: “You have overwhelming evidence to confirm that you have achieved the Gold Quality Mark and it is obvious how that benefits all your students”. Sharon Phillips (Development Manager – Youth Sport Trust). Well done everyone. We have a gold plaque arriving very soon! Next Friday, 4th May, we have our Royal Wedding Celebration Day here at Upton. Busy Buttons will be here all day leading ‘The Great Fold’. We will have our Royal Picnic at 12.30pm, weather permitting, on the garden . All the children are warmly invited to dress up either as Princes or Princesses, they can dress in red, white and blue. We look forward to a very happy celebratory day. Rhian Thornton All pupils are to be wearing their summer uniform from next week, commencing 30th April. We were joined in assembly on Wednesday by Fi Lawes from the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice. We were able to hand over a cheque for £935.55, raised from the Nursery pedal push and the Hatchimal raffle held last term. This will fund over 10 months’ worth of home care for one family who receive support from this charity. On behalf of Alexander Devine Hospice, thank you wholeheartedly for your support, it makes a huge difference. Sue Bish On Monday one of our parents, Mr O'Neill, and two of his colleagues from General Electrics, visited Upton with some amazing technology - a virtual reality heart and an augmented reality heart. Forms 5 and 6 were able to explore the structure of a human heart and design their own VR game or App. “After I put the goggles on I could not see anyone. I could only see the 3D heart in front of me. With the controllers I could make it come towards me and even rotate it. I loved it.” Leena F6S “I really enjoyed the VR heart workshop as I want to be a surgeon. It was so cool.” Amelie F6W “You could really see the heart in detail. I would love to do it again.” Isobel F6W Lesley Webb Upton House School
