#UptonTogether in Form 1 What does ‘togetherness’ mean to you? It could be spending time with your family, talking to your grandparents on the phone or perhaps going for a picnic in the park! Form 1 shared some lovely ideas in one of our assemblies. Welcome to ‘The Brain House’ This week in Wellbeing we have been talking about ‘The Brain House’ and what happens in our brain when we become overwhelmed by strong emotions. We are all experiencing so many different emotions at this time, many of which are difficult to understand and know how to respond to. Helping our child connect what their brain is doing, driven by thoughts with how their body reacts, builds self-awareness boosting emotional regulation skills. The children have been thinking about the upstairs ‘thinking’ and downstairs ‘feeling’ parts of our brain being like the floors in a house which are connected by a staircase. When the alarm signal sounds, ‘Big Boss Betty’ alerts the brain to danger either because we are frightened, angry, worried or sad, the staircase falls down so our thinking and feeling parts cannot talk to each other, making us ‘flip our lid’. When we breathe or move it helps to calm ourselves down physically, bringing the floors back together again and the staircase is back in place allowing us to problem solve, plan, be creative in what to do next.
