Weekly Newsletter Autumn 2019 Week 9 What a better way to bring all the fabulous activities planned for our Parliament Week than a visit from Chris Wilkins—the former Director of Strategy and Chief Speechwriter to previous Prime Minister, Theresa May. During his time working at Number 10, Mr Wilkins wrote the PMs major policy speeches on Brexit, domestic and foreign policy and her speech to the Republican Party retreat in Philadelphia, where she was the first PM to meet with the newly appointed President Trump at the White House. The morning was filled with mini workshops based around Mr Wilkins’s experience working in politics. Forms 4 and 5 had the opportunity to find out more about a day in the life of a speech writer, followed by a very interesting Q&A session which really kept Mr Wilkins on his toes. He was faced with hard-hitting questions about his views on the Government calling an election in the midst of Brexit still being negotiated and also his opinion on what Mrs May was like as a leader. Form 6 enjoyed an in-depth speechwriting workshop where they were able to practice their own presentation skills by writing an award-winning speech which could be delivered on Speech Day explaining what makes Upton great. The girls truly enjoyed every minute of the workshops and the outcome of their work was a true sentiment to the rich talent constantly being nurtured here at Upton. Well done girls. Fiona Solomon

On Friday, 15th November, we will be supporting Children in Need, a charity which supports projects to support disadvantaged children all over the UK. All children are to wear mufti (home) clothes that include something spotty (no pyjamas please) and bring in a donation of at least £1. Sensible shoes are to be worn and school hat and coat must be worn to and from school. Help us support with spots! Erin and Riya, Charity Reps

An exciting end to the week as Form 3 had their first netball fixture hosting Bishopsgate. The girls played extremely well and are now well on their way to improving their netball skills and tactics. Simultaneously, Form 4 were away to Bishopsgate where they faced tough matches. The girls coped well with lots of rotations and having to give different positions a go. Our thanks to St Piran’s who hosted our Form 5 pupils for a hockey match on Wednesday. Upton House School
