Upton Update Autumn 2016 Snow globes capture a timeless magic long associated with childhood and silent wonder. As is often the case with things that endure, the magic lies in its simplicity. Simply hold carefully and gently shake to send particles of snow into a flurry around a miniature 3D festive scene. The invention of the snow globe was in fact accidental in 1900, from an experiment to try and improve the brightness of the newly invented - and then not very bright - electric light bulb. Inspired by shoemakers of the time who used to get more light from a candle mounted behind a glass globe filled with water, giving them a spotlight the size of a hand. Mr Perzy, (a surgical instruments mechanic), wanted to use the same principle in front of a light bulb, but found that it did not work very well.
