For this issue, we are delighted to feature the beautiful and talented Shamea MortonMwangi on the cover; as she shares intimate information about her journey and an exciting new chapter in her career. pg 28

Bernard Bronner Publisher

Bernard: Where can you say your favorite place that you have traveled? Shamea: I’m gonna say it was the first place my husband took me for my honeymoon. The resort was called ‘Huvafen’ Fushi Resort’, we went to the Maldives. It’s freaking gorgeous, and so amazing. I mean it was like honestly one of my most favorite places in my entire world.

Ceobernardbronner Bernardbronner Bernardbronner

Bernard: How do you avoid getting caught up in all the fanfare; being in the

limelight for such a long time? Shamea: You know I’m not a person that gets all hyped about who, or what is cool right now. If it doesn’t matter. if it doesn’t bring me peace, joy, and if it questions my integrity, I’m not doing it. Bernard: I hear you are working on new music. Will we have a new single this summer? Shamea: Yes, I’m definitely back in the studio and I can confirm the single will be out this summer but I’m still perfecting it.

FOR DEAR LIFE A Motivational Journal Designed to Cultivate Your Faith and Relationship with God Penned by LaToya Nicole Instagram @_LaToyaNicole

This wonderfully inspirational author has penned three books. They are For Dear Life, Bringing Home Multiples and Victim Villain Conquer. This featured journal is exceptionally designed. In an exciting way, she motivates her readers by providing Things to Work On, 60 Days of Weekly Lessons, Thought Drops, Motivational Scriptures, Daily Check Points, and Open Journaling. Each section is color coded allowing the reader to get fully involved in the interactive journaling process. There are really cool Post-it notes in pastel colors which helps individuals make the notes of their choice. The Affirmation of the Day is quite profound while the Mood emojis and Priority “To Do” Journals set the stage for individuals to make positive changes in their daily lives. www.Linktr.ee/Author_LaToyaNicole

Once you get to a place in life where you’ve gone through some things, made some changes, evolved, and are on that steady path to become the best version of you; you may be triggered at times and stray off course. Some people will admire your growth. On the contrary, some will doubt you and discourage you. But always stay true to who you KNOW you are becoming.” —LaToya Nicole 10

AS YOU WANDER THROUGH THE BEAUTIFUL lobby or stroll about the open-air sanctuary of the Kimpton Brice Hotel in Historic Savannah, Georgia, you’ll get a wonderfully exciting glimpse of many pets such as Great Danes, Labradoodles, Chihuahuas, Persian cats, and Parakeets. That’s because the property welcomes pets of all sizes, weights, and breeds with no limit in number. “Kimpton was the first boutique hotel company to become pet friendly. Additionally, all Kimpton Hotels graciously welcome pets free of charge with an incidental waiver and pet registration to be signed upon arrival,” shares Co’Meh Shaw, PR and Nightlife Manager of The Kimpton Brice. “The Kimpton pet program offers creative services and amenities to ensure that pet guests have a stay as equally as wonderful as their human companions.” Pets get the royal treatment. They receive a personal greeting from the staff upon their arrival as well as complimentary treats. Pet bowls and waste bags are available throughout the property. If you like, the chef can curate a special meal. A door hanger is hung on the door for housekeeping to recognize the presence of furry friends. Upon check in, Kimpton guests can enjoy complimentary one-month premium access to Wag! The property has partnered with Rover and BringFido also. “The Brice treats your pet like family. They know firsthand how traveling with a pet can be and are here to make it as seamless as possible. Everyone who works at The Kimpton Brice loves pets and strives to create a quality stay for you and your family,” says Shaw. On the horizon, Kimpton Brice Hotel will offer exclusive ceramic bowls, branded items like chew toys and unique bandannas, and pet beds in differing sizes. They will also offer artisanal treats that will be locally sourced in Savannah. The upscale property has much to offer the guests accompanying their furry friends. There are complimentary services such as an evening wine reception, morning coffee and tea service, cruiser public bikes, Gaiam yoga mats, 24-hour fitness access, and an outdoor pool. Of the 145 elegant guestrooms and 26 grand suites, there are pet free accommodations for guests with allergies and who are not traveling with pets. The onsite eatery, Pacci Italian Kitchen & Bar, has a special adjacent area for pets to sit, while guests dine inside of the restaurant. 12

THE REBIRTH OF R&B VOCALIST INAYAH

A RELATABLE TALE TOLD WITH CONFIDENCE AND GRIT. BY TASH VAN DOIMEN

SOME MAY KNOW INAYAH FROM HER YouTube covers of Boo’ed Up by Elli Mai and Fantasia’s When I See You, but since her first viral video in 2019, Inayah has been carving her own path. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, the young vocalist aims to inspire confidence in her fans, even though this has not always been the case in her personal life. Inayah is very open about her struggles with doubt and fear. She stated that finding that confidence and sharing it with her supporters is a major part of her present goals. “It took me some time to actually get into the confidence space… So it’s just important that I exude that… I am so confident, and I want my listeners and supporters to feel that, and hopefully, it inspires them to believe in themselves”. Certainly, when you listen to her music, you hear it, you see it in her videos, and you grasp these aspects of her personality when conversing. Bold, fearless, and unapologetic, from her very first single, ‘Best thing’ with EMPIRE Records, to her latest album, ‘Wait There’s More’, Inayah tells her story and shares relatable life and relationship challenges that we have all experienced directly or indirectly. She is a storyteller. She started writing songs and poems at a young age, so she always knew she would be a performer, but the path to get there was a mystery. She explained to Upscale Magazine how she started out by entering local competitions. Despite her success, she 14

It took me some time to actually get into the confidence space…So it’s just important that I exude that… I am so confident, and I want my listeners and supporters to feel that, and hopefully, it inspires them to believe in themselves. doubted herself. There was a brief period when she wanted to be a ‘crime scene investigator’, particularly after being cut from the third round of auditions of ‘The Voice’. She nevertheless persevered as she knew her calling was in the music industry. One of her first jobs was with a jingle company, which she still works for today! However, she would soon gain the attention of big names like Tyler Perry, Jamie Foxx, and Maxwell. Even with the success, Inayah remains humble, “Best thing was my very first hit song, which is now a platinum record. And I still can’t believe that I thank God for that.”. According to the singer, songwriter and actress, her best role is that of a mom. Among the “most greatest, most scariest, most tiring, nerve-wracking job in the world”, she wouldn’t ‘trade it for the world’. After taking a hiatus from the industry to focus on her family, Inayah is happy to return with everything her fans loved about her, including an extra dose of confidence. Following a challenging postpartum experience, Inayah released her new album and will reprise her recurring role as Trina on BET’s Emmy-nominated The Ms. Pat Show, among other upcoming ventures.

MINDFUL SUMMER

T

Check out these insightful tips on exercise, healthy cuisine, and safety in the sun. By Dr. Johnecia Mason

THE OFFICIAL START OF THE SUMMER is around the corner so it’s time to get ready to be your best self. The outdoors typically offers a time to relax and unwind. Additionally, it presents an amazing opportunity to become more active and get healthier. Upscale enlisted the help of two exceptional experts at the Four Seasons Westlake Village Center for Health & Wellbeing to give our readers advice. Rob Cook, speaker and health coach, shared cool and innovative exercises for the summer such as water aerobics, trail hiking, and yoga. “The beautiful weather of summer not only invites us to be outside but also offers a bunch of health benefits. During these months, we exchange some of our clients’ workouts with

22

outdoor activities that they enjoy, which also count as exercise and movement,” says Cook. “Trail hiking, for instance, is not just a great way to change your routine and see new scenery, but it also challenges your body with varying terrains, boosting your cardiovascular health, and strengthening your muscles. Outdoor yoga is another excellent exercise for the summer. Many parks and beaches offer sunrise or sunset sessions, which can be a healthy practice to start or end your day, enhancing your flexibility and mental well-being.” It is imperative that individuals make safety a priority when working out in the summertime. Cook points to the accelerated rates of injuries as a means of targeting three focus areas.

“Stay hydrated. The summer heat can lead to increased sweat and higher fluid loss, risking dehydration unless you actively maintain your fluid intake. Protect your skin. Prolonged exposure to the sun raises the risk of sunburn and related skin conditions, which can be harmful. Wear sunblock or cover-up to avoid excessive exposure,” says Cook. “Acclimate yourself. Adapt to activities in the summer. It’s important to give your body time to adapt to higher temperatures. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts to build your tolerance to the heat.” Once you’ve completed your exercises, it is important to choose nutritious food options. The center suggests these tasty yet healthy dishes. The delicious cuisine includes Chicken Salad with Sesame Vinaigrette, Grilled Peaches with Whipped Burrata and Dukkha, Heirloom Tomato Salad with Ginger Vinaigrette, Grilled Street Corn, and Falafel with Cilantro Yogurt in Pita. Lest we forget cool, refreshing, and delicious smoothies. You can enjoy them any time of day. Samantha Carrie Johnson, the Wellness Chef for The Center for Health & Wellbeing shared a great healthy recipe for an Avocado Breakfast Smoothie you can make right at home. By Jonell Whitt

JENNA NIA AND HER HUSBAND DONAY WILLIS defy the stereotype of a typical working-class couple. Donay is a full time entrepreneur and owner of several companies in different industries; while Jenna Nia is a renowned fashion designer and budding media personality. As ultimate entrepreneurs with two young children ages 5 and 8. They collaborate on various endeavors, including working out together and parenting. Recently, they even ventured into the world of podcasting. upscale caught up with the dynamic duo to uncover the keys to sustaining a thriving relationship. upscale: Working from home how do you balance cutting off work relationships and spending quality time together? Jenna: This is extremely hard because since we are fulltime entrepreneurs, our business never stops! We are always consulting with each other about what’s going on with our companies day and night, but we do try to dedicate time to strictly spend with the kids or with each other with family outings, and date nights. Donay: I set aside time that’s just for family and block off my schedule. upscale: How do you give each other their personal space? Jenna: I feel like we don’t really intentionally give each other personal space because we genuinely do like spending time together, but both of us have times where we do things that strictly cater to our own interest. For example, Donay loves cars and he likes to restore classic cars and go to car shows. My me time is usually self-care like getting a facial or a massage. Donay: I give her a lot of free time when I do stuff with the boys like go to monster truck shows or football games. upscale: Why do you feel it’s important for couples to be in

alignment, spiritually, physically, mentally, then as a family especially when you have small children? Jenna: I think it’s important for us to be in alignment as parents, as best friends, as lovers, and as business partners because we have so many goals that we have to achieve together and we have to be on the same page to get things done. Our roles in our business and household really complement each other. Donay: We work together hand-in-hand every day and we have kids that need us. We’re stronger together. upscale: When you vacation, who plans the vacation typically? Jenna: When we take a vacation, I typically plan it. I’m really big on making sure that we stay at the most luxurious hotels or villas and have access to the best restaurants. Donay is super adventurous and he likes to explore new places. For this reason I always try to find exciting things to do. Donay: Yeah she’s really picky about everything so I let her do the planning. upscale: How are you stimulated mentally by working out together? Donay: Working out with her motivates me because I love watching her go hard to look good for me. Jenna: The fact that he appreciates the work I have put in to maintain myself makes me more excited to do it…especially while he’s watching. Decatur, Georgia has been the home and starting place for much of the incredible talent and celebrities we have adored and admired in yesteryears up to present day. From television host and radio personality, Ryan Seacrest—to world renowned comedian, Chris Tucker—Decatur has never been shy in its contributions to the extensive list of stars the state of Georgia boasts as a whole. Singer, dancer, and actress, Shamea Morton Mwangi, another Decatur native, has been steadily growing upon the hearts and minds of many around the world. For nearly 10 years or more, fans were able to get a sneak peek into Shamea’s life as she appeared on The Real Housewives of Atlanta as a ‘friend of the show’ and bestie to Porsha Williams. Now, Shamea gives fans more to love as she enters the upcoming new season of Housewives as a peach-holder, showing us why they say, ‘Decatur is where it’s greater,’ and giving viewers a more up close and personal look into her multi-faceted career. At the age of four, she got the performance bug early, singing for and ultimately leading her church choir. Her parents enrolled her into dance classes where she quickly mastered art forms in Hip-Hop and Jazz, becoming a force behind both the microphone and the dance floor, stimulating her interests in having a fun party anytime you can. “You have to be your own party sometimes,” she says, “You need to dance and just be in your own world, having a good time. That’s the type of energy that defines me.” From being recruited into singing groups in the past that included R&B singer, Shamari Devoe (formerly of Blaque), and another with R&B singer, Keri Hilson (another Decatur native)—to joining the cheerleading squad for the Atlanta Hawks from 2003 to 2014—and cheering for the Atlanta Falcons, serving as a captain from 2011 to 2012, Shamea has always been fueled by her love of the arts and rarely tires out. “As long as I have breath in my body, I have to use it for good and for change. I have somewhat lived by the adage that you can rest when you die. For now, I want to live out my dreams and make a difference in the world too along the way.” And make a difference she does. Shamea created Shamea Shares, a non-profit devoted to providing cheer and dance camps to underprivileged youth and teams. Footage of her involvement with the camp will be filmed for Housewives and will hopefully make it into a final cut. “We hold the camp annually and have had about 150 to 200 participants. Most of them are brown and black girls, but we have also had a few boys as well. They come out for a full day of fun, development, and good energy! Along with meals and other items, we also provide mental health checks with a licensed clinician, so the kids are able to get support in that arena as well if needed. Many kids cannot afford summer camp, so this is a free opportunity for them, and it feels so good to be able to do that.”

When it comes to the camera, Shamea has experience in both the scripted and unscripted world. After a number of stints on network television and stage plays, Shamea earned a spot in the critically acclaimed film, Drumline, starring Nick Cannon and Zoe Saldana. She has also attained roles in other hits like the Tyler Perry stage play, The Haves and Have Nots, or the TLC biopic, Crazy, Sexy, Cool. Radio also had a calling in her life as she along with stand-up comic and actress, Ms. Pat, co-hosted the V-103 morning show in Atlanta, Georgia with Big Tigger. Though ratings for the morning show improved during their tenure, the two departed their roles in 2023. Plugging in again to her love of singing, Shamea has been in the studio working on new music that she plans to release this summer.

In 2017, she married her husband, Gerald Mwangi, in a beautiful ceremony in Kenya. The couple welcomed their second child, Shiloh, by surrogate in 2023, courageously opening up about her IVF journey while on the V-103 morning show and connecting with a number of parents and families around the world that have gone through similar situations or are facing it for the first time. “I’m obsessed with both of my sweet girls,” she says, “My oldest, Shya, is following in mommy’s footsteps, taking an interest in dance classes and really excelling at it! She also got accepted into a very prestigious private school and we are so proud that she will begin the first grade there. Education is so important to me, and I cannot wait to see all both of my daughters do in their lives. I just want the absolute best for them.” As she embarks upon a new chapter in her life, filming and preparing for the premiere of Housewives, she stays away from negative perspectives or thoughts on reality television and its discouraging impact on the married lives of some. “There are negative views on so many things in life and there were a few people that had a negative outlook on my marriage to my husband and our relationship going the distance. Some felt it would not work or it would not last, but we should be encouraging each other and promoting and supporting love for couples, really wanting the best for their futures,” says Shamea, “My husband and I are coming up on our 10-year anniversary, and we are looking forward to celebrating our love and our family. He is in full support of me and everything that I am doing. I feel like I am right where I am supposed to be.” Though she has a healthy and positive disposition regarding her decision to hold a peach in the show’s sixteenth season, she still has strong boundaries and is firm on what is most important to her life. Revered as the best friend to many and highly known for using the moniker, “Hey Best Friends!”, Shamea remains poised and confident in being her authentic self, while also encouraging, supporting, and celebrating her tribe, and maintaining her commitment to putting family first. “If things got so crazy that it impacted my parenting or my relationship, I would not stand for it. My family is my number one priority, and it always will be.” When thinking about all to come in the future, the growth and blessings of her children, and the bond she shares with her husband, Shamea affirms the importance of having a partner that not only understands but supports the passions and pursuits of the other. “My husband recognizes that my singing, dancing, and acting journey began a long time ago, since I was a child. His love and support brings me unspeakable peace and joy. That is the wonderful thing about having a great partnership. With him and my children by my side, my now and all there is to come looks incredibly bright.” upscalemagazine.com

STARS IN STYLE The Hair Moves Of Summer

When it comes summer’s best hair looks, celebrity hairstylist Monaé Everett is the go-to source. Here, the hair pro enlists a few of her star clients to spotlight the hottest mane moves of the season. HAILEY KILGORE The gorgeous Powerbook III: Raising Kanan star shows off an elevated version of a classic warm-weather style favorite. Gorgeous from any angle, celebrity hairstylist Monaé Everett dubs this look on Hailey Kilgore “The Perfect Ponytail”—and we can all see why! “This is great to get all the hair off from your face and it’s also awesome because you can still see hair behind you,” details Everett about this lush coif. “If you complete the style properly, with volume and the lift, it will cascade around your shoulders and still be visible from the front.” Trend Tip: “This is not an everyday ponytail because there’s a lot of hair, there’s a lot of backcombing,” reveals Everett. To style, she clipped in 20-inch long extensions to enhance Hailey’s natural tresses and used a 1.5-inch curling iron to craft curls which were then backcombed to boost the ponytail’s volume and texture. The hair pro opted for Avlon Affirm Care StyleRight Foam Wrap Lotion (to set the foundation of the style) and an Eco Style gel (to craft the sleek base). “This look is great for special occasions—that’s why it’s so different from other ponytails where the hair is just hanging back,” observes Everette about this plush and perfect ponytail.

MARA BROCK AKIL Prolific producer/writer Mara Brock Akil has the magic touch when it comes to must-see TV (think Girlfriends, The Game, Black Lightning, Being Mary Jane just to name a few of her hits). And this talent is pure magic when it comes to gorgeous tresses, too. “She’s wearing her natural gray color which so many more women are embracing,” observes stylist Monaé Everett about the popularity of natural coif colors this season. Trend Tip: “I used the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control line, that is a go-to staple for me. I use that on so many of my clients with naturally curly hair,” shares the stylist about the products enlisted to style Mara’s 3C-4A curls. “I curled her hair with a small 1/2-inch curling iron. I spent a lot of time picking it out and shaping the look.” To finish, Everett used Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray to take the style to new levels of glam. upscalemagazine.com

DOMINIQUE FISHBACK Actress Dominique Fishback is making Hollywood take notice with big-screen hits like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Judas and the Black Messiah. And it’s no different when it comes to setting style trends. With a nod to 90s coif creativity, Dominique sports a half-up, half down look detailed with Fulani-inspired braids crafted by celebrity hair pro Monaé Everett. “I did multiple size braids and I added gold and wooden details,” says the hair pro. “They’re cornrows but when they come forward they’re Fulani-inspired.” Trend Tip: “We added some kinky-straight hair extensions to go with her natural hair,” reveals Everett about styling the star. “Because we’re dealing with a lot of humidity [during summer] it’s really hard to keep your hair super sleek. So, the kinky-straight [extensions] allows for the hair to be a little ‘fluffier.’ To create the texture you see, I did spiral curls and picked the hair out.”

NABIYAH BE Strong shapes are taking the warm-weather style scene by storm declares celebrity hair pro Monaé Everett. Sporting a perfect example of the trend is Daisy Jones & The Six actress/music artist Nabiyah Be. “She is keeping her natural hair texture in a strong circular, geometric shape,” points out the star stylist about this layered cut. Trend Tip: “To create the shape, I had to go in and treat her hair very well,” states Everett who used It’s A 10 Miracle Leave-In Product to properly nourish, condition and prep Nabiyah’s 4B-4C lengths for styling. “I set her curls with the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control line then I went through, after I dried it, and I did a lot of back brushing and a lot of picking out the style.” A generous amount of texture spray helps boosts volume and finishes the look.

Celebrity hairstylist Monaé Everett checks off more mane trends and tips we need to know to get hot-girl summer hair… Celebrity hairstylist Monaé Everett checks off more mane trends and tips we need to know to get hot-girl summer hair… MAKE WAVES “The updated version of ‘Hollywood Waves’ are a little looser versus more structured. The detail is around the face to draw more attention to eyes, cheekbones. They can be done on any length. The longer the hair the larger the barrel of the iron can be to fashion alternating, loose waves (one roll goes away from the face, one towards and so on and so forth). I used a wide-tooth comb to blend waves and a natural boar bristle brush to shape waves at the top of the hair.” GRAY GORGEOUSNESS “Treat your gray hair the same way platinum blondes treat their hair. Use shampoos and conditioners to remove brassiness. Opt for shampoos and conditioners that have purple in them. Avoid extreme amount of heat; don’t curl your hair every day with hot tools.” START A FOUNDATION “The set, or the foundation of a look, is more important than the final styling process. Using styling foam and gel on the foundation [of the style], allows me to blow dry the hair and make the hair stay in place and be more receptive in receiving the curls [for styling]. CREATE MOVEMENT “To give great moment through hair, I use texture spray. I use the Amika Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray, I really like that one. A lot of Black women assume we can’t wear texture sprays. They think it’s for women with straight hair and that’s untrue. [Texture spray] is how you get the width and fullness in the hairstyles.” EMBRACE HUMIDITY “Learn to work with humidity. Embrace humidity and allow your hair to get as big as it wants. The key is also the hair cut—because if there’s not a strong hair cut, humidity will not be your friend.” Monaé Everett is an in-demand hairstylist with an A-list roster of celebrity clients. She is a licensed hairstylist and texture expert versed in styling all hair textures. As an artist, she has made it a mission to teach hairstylists the skills needed to expand their styling repertoire via The Monaé Life Academy (themonaelife.com). Her passion is to open doors for other stylists who want to work with celebrities. This talented hair pro and businesswoman also speaks and consults with universities and corporations on Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB). upscalemagazine.com

When the

Side Dish becomes the Main Dish Words By Jonell Whitt

N the tradition of the American meal, it’s the Main Course where all the attention is typically focused. Whether it’s fine dining, a franchise restaurant, Sunday dinner or a typical Holiday dinner with family; the focus is primarily on the main entree. Are we having Turkey? Ham? Steak. Pot Roast, Brisket or Lobster Tails? Almost nobody volunteers to bring the main entree. But it is the plethora of yummy side items that capture our attention on any menu. So many choices, but we can only pick one for fine dining and two is the norm. The mac’n cheese always takes precedence unless there is an amazing carrot soufflé that has an overbearing aroma that

commands the room. Well, there is a new sheriff in town and it’s called the ‘side dish.’ It also has an announcement to make. In breaking American tradition it’s no longer uncommon to see the mac’n’cheese served as the main entree with several different sides added in. If you ever visit the World Famous House of Mac in Miami you will soon discover the many ways that mac can be served with lobster, lump meat, jerk chicken, jerk shrimp, buffalo chicken, Philly cheesesteak and the list goes on. Wings are not even served on the side anymore. The sides pieces and dishes are taking over it in 2024. Check out the amazing sides available for the summer.

Little Corn Island is Big Corn Island’s little sister, located off Nicaragua’s coast. Both are part of the archipelago of the Nicaraguan coast in Central America. The Corn Islands are owned and managed by the Nicaraguan government and bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. The country has seen its share of influence from various people and cultures calling it home. Africans arrived in the early 1600s as enslaved workers. Through the years the many enslaved workers fled the surrounding Caribbean islands and settled in Bluefields, a city on the coast, once known as the capital of the former Kingdom of Mosquitia. Afro-descendant Creole men and women preserved their customs through oral history, cuisine, dances, culture, traditional medicine, and spirituality which continues to that still survive. Today, you’ll find the influence of Afro-Caribbean culture on Little Corn Island off the coast from Bluefields. Little Corn Island and Yemaya Reefs are Nicaguara’s” best kept secret” for relaxing, adventure, self-care, and experiencing AfroCaribbean cuisine and culture. The seaside resort has 16 comfortable Casitas and one sailboat room. A Luxury Casita is your choice for a romantic getaway, accommodating two guests, with a king-sized bed, ocean view, private plunge pool, and spacious terrace facing the ocean with an expansive view for watching the sunrise. A special touch is their nightly turn-down service with tea and chocolate. 54

Yemaya Reefs’ Boat House is a private accommodation steps away from the Casitas with all the amenities and view. Erizo Restaurant, serves creative and tasty chef-driven dishes with a rotating menu of local flavors and traditional specialties. The traditional Afro-Caribbean Rondon stew is often served. Dest i nat i on Wedding When saying “I do” is Tailored to Reflect Your Unique Personality Style: An Unforgettable Wedding in Mexico City

W

While most people think of sand and sun for a Mexican destination wedding, Bunna Lim and Ashlea Pope had something different in mind. They chose Mexico City, one of the world’s largest metropolises known for its artsy vibes, historic architecture, green parks, museums and world-class cuisine. The couple had called Mexico City home for two years before deciding that it would be the place where they’d exchange their vows. Among the many venues in the city, they were immediately drawn to one of the most popular, Proyecto Publico Prim, a historic mansion built in the early 20th century, now a beautifully restored architecture event space located right in the heart of the city. A grandeur building structure that celebrates union, culture and creativity, the Prim has many elegant huge rooms making it ideal for ceremonies, cocktails and receptions. Most guests flew in from Atlanta, many others from all over the US and a few from countries around the world. With attendees from as far away as France, Australia, and Africa, the wedding was truly an international extravaganza. “Knowing so many people made it hard to narrow down our guests list to under 200 people,” says Bunna. “Because many of our invitees were diverse, savvy and free-spirited, we did not want our ceremony to be stuffy or overly religious. 56

UPSCALEMAGAZINE

WORDS BY KITTY J. POPE PHOTOS BY GABBY BOLIVAR

So we chose to write our own vows which included a pledge to our love, and we had our mutual friend Mary Coston of Atlanta officiate the wedding,” explains Ashlea, who has traveled to over 35 countries. She ended up selecting 10 bridesmaids, along with her sister Kristina Chatelain and the groom’s sister Bunrath Phillips as Matrons of Honor. Bunna managed to narrow his groomsmen down to ten with one best man, his cousin Rothanak Ravuth. The Proyecto Publico Prim space for the wedding was set up in a stunning, circular flower arrangement around a staircase adorned with lush blooms and greenery dropping down from the 2-story ceiling as the backdrop. The couple had chosen a vibrant, yet romantic and cozy muted tropical color scheme of different shades of orange, gold, yellow, pink, green and lavender. The bride wore an elegant Megan Markle look-alike long-sleeve Simone gown with bell-shaped cuffs made of silk and wool by noted fashion-forward designer Danielle Frankel. Ashlea’s bridesmaids wore different unique styles of rust gowns by noted designer Jenny Yoo. Bunna also wanted his groomsmen uniquely styled, so he chose for himself and his groomsmen swanky, charcoal gray custom-fitted designer suits by Suit Supply, made of Italian fabric that he coordinated with black ties. The ceremony began with an AfroMexican gospel choir, directed by Abdiel Lozado (@AbdielVocals), who sang two songs by Kanye West’s Sunday Service Choir. In a breathtaking,

heartfelt ceremony, the couple exchanged ‘I do’s’ to become Mr. and Ms. Lim. Because they wanted to honor Mexico’s culture, they chose a lively Mexican mariachi band that burst onto the scene with upbeat music and serenaded the guests during the reception. After the bride made an outfit change into a sleeveless white archived Florence gown of silk and wool also by designer Danielle Frankel, the newlyweds joined their guests at the end of cocktail hour. The dinner presented by Atípico Caterers was served family-style at each table consisting of two courses that included palmito aguachile (a Mexican ceviche seafood dish of fresh raw shrimp in chili-lime sauce), mackerel, chuck short ribs, shrimp a la Diablo and duck barbacoa. After dinner the bride and groom opened the floor with a dance to Chris Stapleton’s song “Tennessee Whiskey.” Then everyone started celebrating, and the wedding party and many guests burst onto the floor like crazy for a night to remember. Lasting until well past midnight, the night’s celebration and entire ceremony was unforgettable with some guests proclaiming that it was the most joyous and upbeat wedding they had ever attended.

Drew sustains himself by selling water on the bustling street corners, much to the perpetual concern of his mother Rose (La La Anthony) who worries about his risky career choice. Charles Williams (Omar Dorsey), a local entrepreneur, takes Drew under his wing and endeavors to guide him away from the dangerous street corners. Nevertheless, Drew persists in his water-selling ventures and soon becomes a target for the local gangster, Lil Zoo (Quavo), leading to some seriously precarious situations. Stay hydrated, stay safe! THE LEGEND – LENA HORNE A LIFE OF TALENT AND ACTIVISM BY DR. THELÁ THATCH

“I am a Black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.” —Lena Horne

L

LENA HORNE WAS A multi-talented artist and a passionate activist whose influence extended far beyond the entertainment industry. Her remarkable career spanned several decades, and she is celebrated for her contributions to music, film, and civil rights activism. Lena Mary Calhoun Horne was born on June 30, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York. From an early age, she showed immense talent in singing and dancing. Her journey in show business began when she joined the chorus line at the Cotton Club, a famous Harlem nightclub, in the 1930s. Her captivating performances and exceptional vocal abilities soon made her a standout talent in the entertainment world. Horne was married to Louis Jones from 1937 to 1944, and they had two children; Gail Lumet Buckley and Edwin “Teddy” Jones. She married Lennie Hayton in December 1947 in Paris, France, but they kept their marriage a secret for three years. The union was significantly impacted by racial prejudice, and they separated in the 1960s but never divorced. Radiant, elegant, poised, and regal are just a few words that capture the essence of Lena Horne’s beauty, which was not only physical but also reflected her charisma and charm. Lena Horne’s 60

UPSC ALE M AGA Z INE

beauty and talent brought her to Hollywood, where she broke barriers for African American performers. Despite the racial discrimination of her time, she managed to secure groundbreaking roles in films such as “Cabin in the Sky” and “Stormy Weather.” Her performances in these movies showcased her acting prowess and solidified her status as a trailblazer. In addition to her success in the music industry, Horne made a significant impact on Broadway. She appeared in several acclaimed productions, including “Jamaica” and “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music,” which earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Lena Horne was not content with just being a star in the entertainment world. She was a fierce advocate for civil rights, using her platform to fight against racial injustice. Her activism included work that broke down racial barriers in the entertainment industry. She refused to perform for segregated audiences and used her influence to push for integration in nightclubs and theaters. By the end of the 1940s, Horne had sued a variety of restaurants and theaters for discrimination and become an outspoken member of the leftist group Progressive Citizens of America.

McCarthyism was sweeping through Hollywood, and Horne soon found herself blacklisted, believed to be due in part to her friendship with actor Paul Robeson, who was also blacklisted. She was a vocal supporter of the civil rights movement, working closely with prominent figures like Medgar Evers and participating in civil rights rallies and marches. Horne’s efforts helped to raise awareness about the struggles of African Americans and contributed to the momentum of the movement. Horne achieve activism through art and often conveyed messages of empowerment and racial equality. Songs like “Now!” and “We’ll Be Together Again” reflected her commitment to the cause of civil rights. Lena Horne was a remarkable talent and a dedicated activist whose life and career remain a source of inspiration. Her commitment to civil rights and her extraordinary abilities as a singer and actress make her an enduring figure in American history. Lena Horne’s impact on both the world of entertainment and the fight for social justice is a testament to the power of art and activism to create positive change. Her contributions to both music and civil rights continue to inspire and resonate with people worldwide.
