Bernard: You and Yandy have been together since your twenties. This question may sound cliché but would you say it was love at first sight?

Mendeecees: My wife is beautiful. But when we first met, it was something about the way she moved. She was very confident, she was funny, but it was her personality that sealed the deal.

Bernard: How important is fatherhood to you?

Mendeecees: Fatherhood, it’s one of the most important aspects of my life. Family is everything. We live for our children.

DEEPSEEK:

THE CHINESE AI COMPANY THAT IS DISRUPTING THE MARKET

Chinese artificial intelligence company, DeepSeek, caused recent upset to American stock markets as it took on leading AI competitors like San Francisco-based large language model, OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT.

Released on January 20th, DeepSeek quickly caught the attention of investors as the free AI powered chatbot’s launch led to a plummeting of tech stocks that garnered an atmosphere of frenzy and fueled further debate over emerging AI developments between the U.S. and China.

DeepSeek’s uniqueness is tied to the company’s claim that it had spent just $5.6 million creating its AI model, a fraction of the over $100 million spent by the makers of OpenAI, due to its ability to use lesser and comparatively under-powered, AI chips.

The Chinese AI model is also said to be more robust and efficient than OpenAI, producing better responses and outputs for technical tasks such as logical reasoning, mathematical equations or coding.

DeepSeek’s recent earning of the #1 spot atop Apple Store’s most downloaded free apps, seemingly weakens the notion that larger budgets and only the crème de la crème of AI chips, can create the best high-powered AI technology.

AN AFRICAN HISTORY OF AFRICA

From

the Dawn of

Humanity to Independence

Penned by Zeinab Badawi

@thezeinabbadawi

This book is more than fitting for Black History Month. The author traveled for seven years to more than thirty countries in Africa doing research. She reminds readers that everyone is African because civilization began on the continent. She shares that until 8,000 to 12,000 years ago, all humans were dark skinned and are African or descended from an African immigrant. In this her first book, she discusses slavery, myths of violence, notable female leaders and royals, ancient artifacts, primeval civilizations, medieval empires, and so much more. With accounts shared by the Africans themselves, this book is worth the read. www.kushcom.co.uk

“Africa is where it all began for us modern humans. We should be united by our shared beginning in a way that enables us to look beyond race, to a time when such differences did not exist.”

– Zeinab Badawi

Men Identifying Their Pain and Reclaiming Their Power

When speaking about Black History, it’s vitally important to discuss the struggles, challenges, and emotional wellness of Black men. Legendary actor Courtney B. Vance recognizes this. He partnered with illustrious psychologist Dr. Robin L. Smith aka “Dr. Robin” to address this. The book discusses sharing one’s feelings, being candid about depression, practicing self-care, and the exploration of grief, identity, and relationships. Using his own formative experiences as a backdrop, the duo has created a guide to helping Black men navigate life and their place in it.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE

PERRIS HULL AND MELODY LOWERY, the visionary forces behind The Regal Court, have revolutionized immersive experiences with a captivating blend of artistry, history, and fantasy. With decades of expertise in beauty, makeup, and styling, they’ve created a platform where storytelling is at the forefront, producing extravagant themed events, photoshoots, and balls that transport participants into a world of historical glamour and innovative creativity. Through their passion for artistic expression, they’ve crafted experiences that invoke nostalgia while exploring new creative frontiers.

Perris, a hairstylist, makeup artist, and photographer with a legacy that spans prestigious platforms like Paris Fashion Week and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, transforms individuals into living works of art. Melody, an expert makeup artist and esthetician instructor, blends her deep understanding of historical beauty with modern techniques to create stunning, timeless looks. Together, they founded The Regal Court to bring history and beauty together through unforgettable storytelling.

It was during a fashion show where Perris first encountered Michelle Lynch, an accomplished organizer

known for her striking resemblance to Queen Charlotte from the hit series Bridgerton. Inspired by their connection, Perris had an idea—would Michelle be interested in modeling for a Bridgerton-inspired photoshoot? A simple “YES” from Michelle breathed life into a dream, and the vision was set in motion. With the collaboration of Indrea Gordon, the designer behind the breathtaking white dress, the shoot became a stunning portrayal of Regency-era elegance—an enchanting blend of historical charm and modern creativity.

The Regal Court’s work is more than just a photoshoot—it’s a celebration of history brought to life, where elegance, fashion, and storytelling converge. The portrayal of Black royalty through characters like Queen Charlotte, depicted as a Black monarch in Bridgerton, adds a deeper narrative by exploring how race, fashion, and privilege intersect in an alternative historical context. This innovative portrayal invites viewers to imagine history through a new lens, expanding the dialogue on beauty, culture, and identity, while highlighting the regal presence of Black figures in history that have often been overlooked.

THE COLOR OF LOVE

A Beautiful Love Story Based on Commitment, Sacrifice and the Power of Prayer

DAVID MANUEL IS THE FULTON COUNTY Director of Arts & Culture in Atlanta, Georgia. His wife Karren describes his work ethic as an unwavering dedication that’s palpable; he approaches every task with an infectious passion and persistence. Accepting nothing less than his goals. These qualities were some of the first traits that attracted Karren to him. “Despite occasionally being a “taskmaster,” his charisma makes even the most challenging tasks enjoyable’ exclaims Karren. His story is painted in vibrant hues of persistence, faith, and shared joy.

What stood out most is David’s unwavering commitment to his walk with Christ. In their early days together, Karren recalls feeling timid about praying aloud. Sensing her hesitation, David offered the gentle encouragement she needed to feel safe, nurturing her confidence. This steadfast support blossomed into a beautiful journey—one that has led Karren to host a group prayer call for nearly four years.

Their love language speaks loud and clear in the kitchen through food, despite their differing palates. David revels in his meat and potatoes, while Karren savors seafood and veggies. Together, they form a dynamic grilling duo: Karren preps, organizes, seasons, and keeps the kitchen immaculate, while David takes

charge at the grill. They have learned to dance around their differences focusing on the enjoyment of each other’s company.

After 10 years of marriage David still has a vivid fond memory during early dating when Karren showed up in an amazing red dress. She is his breath of fresh air. Karren’s often reminisces the memorable surprise birthday trip to Italy, where David spared no expense. They wandered through the stunning landscapes of Rome, Tuscany, Milan, and Venice, visiting art museums, historic chapels, exquisite restaurants, and charming vineyards. Traveling by car, train, and boat, every moment encapsulated what they cherish most: spirituality, art, culture, wine, and shopping.

In the end, the colors of their love story shine brightly—not just in the grand gestures, but in the everyday moments of prayer, laughter, and cooking together. David’s dedication, Karren’s confidence, and their ability to blend their differences into shared adventures create their masterpiece of love. Their journey is a beautiful testament to the power of commitment and the joy of loving one another in the colorful tapestry of life.

STANLEY GREAVES

A Distinguished Artist, and his Vision

Stanley Greaves is among the Caribbean’s most distinguished artists; he writes, paints, sculpts, and carves. There is hardly a medium he has not mastered.

Coming from humble beginnings in Georgetown, Guyana, Greaves has always been creatively inclined. This creative nature, he says, is inherent, “I suppose I can say, I was that way disposed… I was born with [sic] a predisposition towards getting into making things, [its] as simple as that”

WORDS BY TASH VAN DOMIEN PHOTOS COURTESY OF STANLEY GREAVES
Courtesy
I like working in wood, but the preference comes from whatever is the idea that comes to mind, whatever idea or concept I’m working on, that decides what materials I’m going to use, whether it’s clay or wood… the concept decides on what media it needs to be expressed in.

Some may argue, however, that his artistic nature is both hereditary and nurtured. Both his father and grandfather were creatives in their own right. His grandfather, of Bajan origins, ran two workshops in Guyana, one in cabinet making and the other in upholstery.

His father, on the other hand, was a ‘Jack of all trades’, he made things around the house. “But he also did things like tree trimming, lettering, sign painting, tattooing…” Greaves explained as he fondly reminisced about things his father made.

His son, the next generation in the Greaves line, is of a ‘different mindset’. “He is into the organization... He understands the mechanics of things”. Having studied electronics, his son, who works in broadcasting, also tinkers with motor cars in his spare time.

So, what does this legend have to say about his work? A true poet at heart, Greaves informed, “I like working in wood, but the preference comes from whatever is the idea that comes to mind, whatever idea or concept I’m working on, that decides what materials I’m going to use, whether it’s clay or wood… the concept decides on what media it needs to be expressed in.”

Greaves also shared his hopes and dreams for the Guyanese arts and culture industry with upscale magazine, he expressed a deep interest in interdisciplinary studies, “it’s a question of education, really. The rest will follow”. He explained that strong programs in creative arts, drama clubs, school choirs, and art rooms with actual materials could go a long way in shaping a well-rounded society that enriches various professions.

He lamented over the loss of vibrancy in the Guyanese arts scene. Lost in memories of a myriad of music and arts

festivals, masquerade competitions, discussion groups and the like, which were constants in the 60s and 70s. He spoke about the involvement of artists at the highest level, serving as advisors and impacting theoretical changes, the historical evolution of Guyana’s arts industry.

It is his fervent hope that the Guyanese society develops an understanding of visual arts. While throughout his career, he taught at various levels, he was quick to explain, “I didn’t want to teach. I wanted to get people to understand the visual language”. A vision started by Edward Burrowes, that is, the goal of making the general population more aware of what artists do.

Although his teaching career is now in the past, Greaves continues to work as he becomes more involved in ceramics and pottery, hand building; a pottery-making technique that uses your hands and fingers to shape clay into forms.

“I like hand building, not using a wheel because, as far as I’m concerned, the wheel is in control of the operation… But in hand building, even if you are making a symmetrical object as hard as you try to make it as symmetrical as possible, it still has little inconsistencies, which I believe makes it more alive rather than a thrown vessel, which is very tight.”

What’s next for Greaves, a series of articles to appear every Sunday in the Guyana Stabroek Newspapers in celebration of his 90th Birthday. The local news outlet will feature one of his art pieces along with one of his poems, not necessarily related, for the remainder of 2025.

“Instead of one exhibition, I am having those articles appear every Sunday…which I think is great when you consider how many people will be reading that. I look upon it as a form of teaching,” he shared.

UMOJA FINE ARTS

A leader in diversity marketing

FFINE ARTS GALLERIES GENERALLY EVOKE thoughts of the most affluent in our society. Images of wealthy men and women leisurely looking at art pieces whilst they sip on champagne and eat hors d’oeuvres. Umoja Fine Arts, however, is trying to dispel this myth. Their goal is to make fine art accessible to all and educate the public, in particular the African American community, about their history in graphic form.

Courtesy of
Umoja Fine Arts

According to Ian Grant, the CEO and Gallerist of the publishing and distribution company, “It’s about offering different price points, and it’s about educating the marketplace too, while we capture our history because it’s very important.”

Representing over thirty local, national and internationally renowned artists, Umoja has worked with Paul Goodnight, Rosemary Summers, Shirley Woodson and Marcel Stewart, to name a few. The gallery would offer both originals and print copies, a diverse setting for a wide range of customers.

Umoja publishes and produces print copies, original paintings, bronze sculptures, serigraphs, archival pigment prints on 100% cotton rag paper, lithographs, and figurines. With art images ranging from $45 to $1,500 and original pieces spanning up to $100,000, depending on the artist.

The Michigan-based company also offers educational classes. “We do have educational classes, and we try to teach about generational wealth, passing on generational wealth, collecting art, not only as a beautiful subject that you want in your home, [but] that reflects who you are,” Grant explained to upscale Magazine.

Founded in 1996, the family-run gallery is now expanding into marketing and publishing. In late April 2024, Umoja opened its Corporate Art Division, offering art collections to be displayed in company offices, lobbies and public spaces, whether it be paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and/or video installations.

Next on their agenda is custom framing under Picture Talk Framing, a new division of Umoja Fine Arts Gallery and, later in the year, book publishing. Umoja is presently developing its first coffee table book in collaboration with Paul Goodnight. A hardcover print collection of over 350 images of Goodnight’s work, with the aim to give the community an affordable opportunity to see the artist’s work from both a historical and educational perspective.

Umoja, a Swahili word meaning ‘unity’ and the first principle of Kwanza, continues to capture African American history in real-time, encompassing the African American art diaspora and the ‘booming colours and voices of Africa’.

‘African American art is the fastest growing segment in the entire art world, and we want to get out here and collect and represent our community’, Grant quipped.

Grant welcomes the public to check out his gallery and website, umojafinearts.com, for locally hosted events, upcoming ventures, themed displays, black history month productions, and ‘see the work for themselves’.

Mahogany River Terrace

To the delight of visitors and locals alike, Carlee M. McCullough opens a magnificent eatery just beyond the gates of Mud Island in Memphis, Tennessee

SSITED ON A SMALL PENINSULA on the Mississippi River right off the coast of Downtown Memphis, Tennessee is an exquisite restaurant called Mahogany River Terrace. Everything about it is pure perfection. Envisioned by Carlee M. McCullough, proprietor, and opened on October 2, 2024, the stunning place has gorgeous décor, tantalizing cuisine, and superb guest service.

“We are upscale southern with a dash of creole and a concentration on seafood. The restaurant’s name is an homage to the 1975 movie Mahogany starring Diana Ross. In the movie the photographer gave Diana Ross the name Mahogany because she was “rich, dark, beautiful and rare.” We subscribe to all of those things at Mahogany River Terrace,” says McCullough.

The brilliant visionary was strategic about every aspect of her fabulous restaurant. She enlisted designer Mary Yates to assist her in setting the creative atmosphere including selecting ultra stylish furniture, divine plateware, a flavorsome menu, refreshing cocktails, and valet parking. The marvelous, multi-level restaurant offers stunning views of the river, and every section on the indoors is Instagram-worthy of the photos you’re sure to take. After 5:00 pm, the locale becomes an exclusive gated community with security granting access to each guest.

“Our goal at Mahogany River Terrace is to be iconic which starts with being excellent. A sustainable business has to be built on excellence, especially in the hospitality industry. Repeat customers are

critical to the success of Mahogany River Terrace,” says McCullough. “When we built this business, we wanted an upscale establishment that families and friends from infants to senior citizens could come and enjoy great food in a safe, gorgeous environment. While we do not have a dress code because of the tourist traffic, most understand the assignment and come dressed for the part.”

Seasoned to perfection and infused with warmth, the magnificent menu encompasses lobster tails, crab fingers, oxtails and grits, alligator bites, Hawaiian ribeye steaks, crab and spinach dip, Tomahawks, Cajun fried chicken, grilled lamb chops, Bouillabaisse, and beignets. “Our location is iconic, so it is imperative that our food and service be iconic as well,” says McCullough.

It is important for Black people to be entrepreneurs and build legacies for their families and communities. McCullough believes ownership of businesses provides options and wealth if done well. Those options include having the freedom and control to hire, train, and promote talented team members as well as pass on businesses that have stood the test of time to family members.

“Generational wealth can be passed on when the businesses do not have to constantly start from scratch. When the legacy and lessons can be passed on, the next generation becomes steps ahead of other startup businesses. The younger generation is poised to provide exposure to social media and marketing concepts that may not have occurred to the previous generation,” points out McCullough.

For owners to take their businesses to the next level, McCullough does offer keen advice. “Sometimes second chances do not come back around. So, you have to put your best foot forward every time you are given an opportunity. Finance is critical and can make or break the business. So, pay attention to inventory, and incoming and outgoing money. The sooner you get an accountant involved the better. Do not be shy about asking for help sooner than later. Before the small problem becomes huge, seek advice. But if the problem is already huge, RUN to seek advice.”

Visit www.MahoganyRiverTerrace.com to learn more about this amazing restaurant. Open seven days a week, you can visit the locale at 280 Island Drive, Memphis, Tennessee 381

DR. JOHN BOYD JR. Pioneering New Black

History

DDr. John Wesley Boyd Jr. President of the National Black Farmers Association is a fourth-generation African-American farmer and civil rights activist. He has emerged as a transformative figure in modern Black history. He has dedicated his life to advocating for justice, equity, and opportunity for AfricanAmerican farmers—a feat once deemed impossible by many.

Courtesy of Dr. John Boyd Jr.

Born in New York City and later relocating to Baskerville, Virginia; while managing his farm, he went from adversity to advocacy with his beautiful supportive wife Kara Brewer Boyd (President of the American Indian Farmers (AAIF) in full support. Dr. Boyd faced firsthand the systemic challenges that plagued African-American farmers. In the late 1980s, while seeking a loan from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Boyd experienced blatant racial discrimination.

It was during an interview, he witnessed his loan application being discarded into a trash can. Multiple failed attempts to secure financing revealed a deeper pattern of injustice. Instead of accepting defeat, Boyd took action, filing a civil rights complaint and embarking on a journey that would alter the landscape of American agriculture.

In 1995, Boyd founded the National Black Farmers Association to provide a platform for African-American farmers who faced similar systemic inequities. Under his leadership, the NBFA has grown to represent over 110,000 members nationwide, advocating for policy changes and bringing attention to discriminatory practices within the USDA. Boyd’s efforts have placed Black farmers’ struggles at the forefront of national conversations, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and reform.

Dr. Boyd’s influence extends far beyond the farm. His efforts earned him the prestigious James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2016, recognizing his unwavering commitment to justice for small-scale farmers.Despite his advocacy work, Dr. Boyd continues to operate his 1,600-acre farm in Virginia, cultivating soybean, corn, and wheat while raising beef cattle. His dual role as a farmer and activist allows him to bridge the gap between grassroots challenges and systemic change.

The settlement for 2.2 billion under President Biden’s administration represented a monumental victory, and is a monumental part of pioneering new black history. This win factually showed strides in his 40 year struggle of seeking justice, addressing decades of systemic inequities and marking a significant step toward restitution for Black farmers.

It’s the unwavering dedication of Dr John Boyd Jr that has redefined what is possible for African-American farmers, breaking barriers and inspiring a new generation to pursue careers in agriculture and advocacy. His story is a testament to resilience, leadership, and the ongoing fight for equality—a legacy that cements him as one of the most prolific figures in new Black history.

Queen City Cuisine

The BayHaven Restaurant Group has transformed the Black culinary community in Charlotte and wowed foodies from around the country with its originality, innovation, and creativity.

TTHREE-TIME JAMES BEARD AWARD finalist Chef Gregory Collier and his wife 2020 Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Fellow Subrina Collier are really making waves in Charlotte, North Carolina. They are known throughout the cuisine scene for so much including their popular Soul Food Sessions. The amazing couple is so impressive, they were asked to serve on President Joe Biden’s Small Business and Entrepreneurs Advisory Council. Co-owners of BayHaven Restaurant Group, they have several exceptional business ventures falling under that umbrella.

“BayHaven Restaurant Group was truly founded from a place of lack. We didn’t see the presence of a lot of Black owned restaurant groups in Charlotte or the Carolinas in general for that matter. So, it was organically made by just adding on over the years,” recalls Gregory. “One of the biggest benefits of forming our organization is seeing other Black folk in the industry opening up their own things and being able to be highlighted in media. When people know who you are, it’s easy to be able to be afforded opportunities. What everyone wants to do is to be able to take care of their families.”

“Uptown Yolk is a contemporary breakfast and brunch concept. We always strive to have great food for folks that have similar taste in the food we prepare.  But this concept also allowed me to have fun in my design and make the environment fun,” says Subrina.

BayHaven Food & Wine Festival www.bayhavenfoodandwine.com

In October of each year, foodies from around the United States descend on Charlotte, North Carolina for this special event. It celebrates foodways and Black chefs from around the country. Guests can watch the Battle of the Foodies and taste delectable bites under the Tasting Tent.

“The festival was built from my frustration of Black folks never being represented in an accurate capacity at the big food festivals. I just got fed up and was like, well we will just do one and stop asking for inclusion,” says Subrina. “We’ve had four and some great outcomes have been people coming to Charlotte that had never been, creating lifelong relationships, and discovery. We tasted a lot of great cuisine by chefs we hadn’t had the chance to visit in their city or even here!”

This classy restaurant has all sorts of surprises in store for its guests. From the distinctive cuisine served up front to the mysterious speakeasy that you can sneak into in the back, you’ll enjoy each moment of your visit. The tantalizing cuisine includes Pan Seared Trout with Roasted Okra Gravy, Braised Beef Meatloaf, Hambone Grits, and Braised Collards. You’ll love the delicious house made pickles, varying hot sauces, and assorted relishes.

“3rd & Fernwood is our “modern meat & 3”. Casual enough for lunch, but still nice enough to celebrate a birthday dinner.  It’s named after the cross streets my dad grew up on and I even lived there for 6 years. It was my first time living in South Memphis, cause I’m a North Memphis girl,” exclaims Subrina.

Tips for Budding Entrepreneurs

From Subrina…

“New business owners, be prepared to fail often. It’s just a part of the game. Get accountants and advisors. You may have more bad days in business than good, make sure the scale is balanced.

But I truly enjoy the fellowship we foster at restaurants, not only between guests but the staff. People really build life-long relationships at our spaces and that is invaluable.”

From Greg…

“Black entrepreneurs have to work harder to build what we build for obvious reasons: system oppression, racism, business redlining etc.  So, since we have a limited access, we have to take legacy building way more seriously. Sometimes a day will come when all you have is your legacy and community, hold it dear.”

Everlasting Relationship

For Yandy and Mendeecees Harris, love is not just an emotion—it’s a commitment, a partnership, and a conscious decision to choose each other every day. Their story began in their 20s, during a fateful business trip to Miami, when their worlds collided in a way neither could have anticipated. What started as a professional connection quickly blossomed into a deep friendship. Over time, that bond evolved into a love so enduring and powerful that it would become a cornerstone of their lives.

NOW, OVER A DECADE IN THE PUBLIC EYE, FIVE BEAUTIFUL YEARS OF MARRIAGE, AND A BLENDED FAMILY OF BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN, THE HARRIS’ LOVE STORY CONTINUES TO INSPIRE. THEIR JOURNEY, FILLED WITH ITS FAIR SHARE OF CHALLENGES AND TRIUMPHS, IS PROOF THAT LOVE ISN’T ALWAYS PERFECT—BUT WITH GRACE, PRAYER, LOVE AND COMMITMENT, (WHICH YANDY FEELS GOES HAND IN HAND) IT CAN BE EVERLASTING.

Saying “I Do” to Forever

In front of family, friends, and God, Yandy and Mendeecees made their vows to one another. For them, those words were more than a ceremonial tradition; they were a declaration of their intentions to stand united through life’s trials. “Divorce isn’t even an option,” Yandy states firmly. “We said, ‘for better or for worse,’ and we meant it. Our focus has always been on the big picture: together forever.”

Their commitment to each other transcends any temporary hardships. Whether facing life altering obstacles that temporarily separated them, career pressures, or personal struggles, the Harris’ remain a team—partners in love, parenting, and building their shared legacy.

The 3 Ingredients to Keep Love

Everlasting

So, what’s the secret to making a relationship work? For Yandy and Mendeecees, it boils down to three key ingredients: grace, prayer, and love combined with commitment.

1. Grace

Yandy is the first to admit that perfection isn’t a requirement in marriage. “Grace means understanding that neither of us is going to get it right all the time,” she says. “There are days when I’m not the perfect wife, the perfect mom, or the perfect friend. Sometimes, I’m selfish. But grace is what allows us to forgive, to give each other the space to grow, and to focus on what really matters.”

For the Harris family, grace isn’t just about forgiveness—it’s about acceptance. It’s a willingness to embrace imperfections and support each other’s journeys.

2. Prayer

Faith is central to their relationship. Private prayers and heartfelt conversations with God have been the foundation of their growth as individuals and as a couple. “Talking to God keeps us aligned,” Yandy shares. “It’s in those moments of prayer that we find clarity, strength, and guidance for the next step forward.”

Mendeecees agrees, adding that prayer has given them the patience and resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges. “We pray for each other and with each other,” he explains. “It’s not just about asking for help—it’s about expressing gratitude for everything we’ve been blessed with.”

3. Love and Commitment

“Love and commitment go hand in hand,” Yandy emphasizes. “You can’t have one without the other. Love is more than a feeling—it’s a choice to show up every single day, even when it’s hard.”

Mendeecees adds that love must transcend temporary frustrations. “Love is stronger than like,” he explains. “There are moments when you may not like someone’s energy or attitude, but in the grand scheme of things, you always love them. That’s what gets you through the tough times.”

THE COLORS OF THEIR LOVE WHEN DESCRIBING THEIR LOVE, YANDY AND MENDEECEES USE VIVID SYMBOLISM. FOR YANDY, LOVE IS RED, LIKE BLOOD—A LIFELINE ESSENTIAL FOR SURVIVAL. “BLOOD FLOWS THROUGH YOUR ENTIRE BODY, FROM THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD TO THE BOTTOM OF YOUR FEET. THAT’S HOW LOVE SHOULD BE—YOUR WHOLE BODY AND SOUL MUST BE COMMITTED TO KEEPING IT ALIVE.”

Mendeecees sees love as white—pure, clean, and eternal. “White represents infinity,” he says. “It’s the kind of love that has no end, no limits. That’s how I see what we share.”

Opposites Attract

What first drew Mendeecees to Yandy was her energy and personality. “She’s everything I’m not,” he shares with a smile. “I’m shy and reserved; she’s outgoing and freespirited. She knows how to take control of a room and bring people together. That’s what made me fall in love with her.”

For Yandy, it was Mendeecees’ authenticity and quiet strength that won her over. “He’s my rock,” she says. “He’s grounded, supportive, and always sees the best in me.”

Together Forever

Through their love, Yandy and Mendeecees Harris have built not only a family but also a legacy. Their relationship is a beacon of hope and inspiration for couples everywhere. “We never lose sight of the goal,” Yandy says. “Together forever.”

Their story reminds us that true love isn’t about perfection—it’s about choosing each other, day after day, with grace, love, and unwavering commitment. With those three ingredients, anything is possible.

Travelers can visit the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre and learn about the brave people who trekked North to start a new life. The center opened in 2015 and serves as a hub for understanding this pivotal chapter in history. Located in Birchtown, it sits near the original settlement site, where artifacts and remnants of the Black Loyalist community have been unearthed.

Visitors to the center can explore interactive exhibits, historical documents, and multimedia presentations that bring the stories of the Black Loyalists to life. One of its most notable features is the “Book of Negroes,” a precisely recorded and meticulously kept ledger that lists the names of thousands of Black Loyalists who boarded ships to Nova Scotia, preserving their identities, stories, and histories.

What you’ll find in the center when you visit:

Interactive exhibits: Visitors can engage with a timeline wall featuring in-depth information on key historical periods, including the origins of the Black Loyalists, their life in Birchtown, the exodus to Sierra Leone, and their lasting impact and legacy.

Carleton’s Book of Negroes: An interactive display allows visitors to search through a virtual copy of this historic document, which lists over 3,000 Black Loyalists who earned their freedom by supporting the British. This feature provides a personalized connection to the past, especially for those tracing their ancestry.

Archaeological Pit: Beneath a glass floor, visitors can view artifacts uncovered during archaeological digs in Birchtown,

SIMONE BILES: THE GYMNAST CONTINUES TO BE A CHAMPION

WHEN IT COMES TO GYMNASTICS

, few shine brighter than Simone Biles. With a matchless combination of power, grace, and unequaled skill, Biles has redefined the sport and solidified her status as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Born on March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, Biles grew up in Spring, Texas, and her journey to stardom began at the tender age of six during a daycare field trip to a local gym. The rest is history.

By the age of 16, Biles was already dominating the gymnastics world. She burst onto the senior international stage in 2013, winning the all-around title at her first world gymnastics championships and becoming the first African American woman to achieve this feat. Her groundbreaking routines, packed with complexity and daring moves, instantly set her apart. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Biles made history by winning four gold medals, a record for a U.S. female gymnast in a single Games. Her victories included the team, all-around, vault, and floor exercise events, with a bronze added on the balance beam.

After a brief hiatus, Biles returned more powerful than ever, continuing to make headlines with her gravitydefying skills. At the 2019 World Championships, she debuted the Biles dismount on the balance beam, a double twisting, double backflip maneuver so challenging it was named after her. By 2023, she had become the most decorated gymnast in history with a staggering 30 world championship medals, including 23 gold.

Biles’s career, however, hasn’t been solely defined by her medals. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she courageously withdrew from several events due to a mental block known as “the twisties,” sparking global conversations about the importance of mental health in sports. Her decision was hailed as an act of bravery, emphasizing that even the most elite athletes face challenges beyond physical competition.

In the 2024 Paris Games, Biles returned triumphantly, winning three gold medals in the team, all-around, and vault events and securing a silver in the floor exercise. Her dominance, resilience, and sheer brilliance once again

captivated the world. Yet, when asked how she wants to be remembered, Biles’ response was simple: as someone who “loved the sport, had fun doing it, and was authentically herself.”

Beyond the gym, Biles has become a beacon of inspiration. In 2022, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her athletic achievements and advocacy for survivors of abuse, having been a vocal supporter of victims in the USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal. In 2023, she married NFL star Jonathan Owens, further showcasing her happiness and growth.

As Simone Biles continues to defy gravity and expectations, she remains a living legend whose influence will inspire generations of athletes to come.

ANNIE PEARL AVERY SHARES STORIES FROM THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

THE STUDENT NONVIOLENT COORDINATION

Committee became champions of change during America’s Civil Rights Movement. Known as SNCC (pronounced Snick), this youth-led organization was founded in 1960 when Ella Baker organized a conference at Shaw University, in response to the Greensboro 4 lunch counter sit-ins. SNCC workers went on to lead the 1961 Freedom Rides, coordinate the March on Washington in 1963, and marshal the Bloody Sunday March in Selma in 1965.

We recently sat with SNCC field secretary Annie Pearl Avery to explore her experiences in the Civil Rights Movement.

When did you get involved with the Civil Rights Movement?

I got involved when the Freedom Riders came to Birmingham. I bought a bus ticket and planned to go on my own, but when I got to the Greyhound station police were lined up so we couldn’t go through. A young man sent there to welcome the Freedom Riders named Wilson Brown talked to me about non violence. Two weeks later, he invited me to a SNCC meeting in Atlanta. I was 17 years old and that was my first encounter with the Civil Rights Movement.

Where are some of the places you worked in the Movement?

I worked with SNCC projects in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virgina, Alabama, and Mississippi. We were like infantry in the civil rights movement. We would go into communities, soften up the place so by the time SCLC got there you could walk the streets.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday March in Selma. How did you get involved in tat March?

I was the only person arrested in Selma on Bloody Sunday, but I actually was not supposed to go on that March. I was in Mississippi with a group from the medical community that wanted to go and help, so I

jumped in the van with them. I was kind of impulsive, so when we arrived in Selma, instead of going back to the church, I got in the March just when they were firing tear gas. A deputized posse of white men would not let me go forward. We got into a disagreement, and I got locked up.

How can lessons from SNCC guide us today?

Instead of just coming to work, SNCC became part of the community, and the community was part of itself. This gave you a tool to correct your children and provided the overall discipline in the community. We don’t have that anymore because it’s every man for themselves. But we can go back to doing the same things, like talking to people in the community, and organizing the people as you talk. The basics are still there.

TRUMP’S IMPACTFUL IMMIGRATION POLICIES

THERE IS A NEW DISPENSATION FACING the United States of America, with President Donald Trump’s aggressive moves to roll out and implement major immigration policies. The promise of “mass deportations,” targeting illegal immigrants has already begun, as the President continues to sign a flurry of executive orders.

TAlready, military aircrafts have been assigned to deport over five thousand migrants who were detained in El Paso, Texas and San Diego, with deportations expected to increase, moving forward.

It is no secret that these changes will present significant challenges for Black and Brown people, who make up a large

percentage of the immigrant population in the United States.

These new immigration system overhauls, will undoubtedly change the way in which migrants are processed and deported.

Additionally, President Trump has moved to halt the processing of those seeking asylum, as well as increasing ICE raids, through executive orders.

While some have welcomed the moves, the impacts of these new policies have already been felt around the world, and has left a feeling of isolation for the affected, their families, and communities.
