MAIDWELL AND UPPINGHAM FORWARD TOGETHER

MAIDWELL HALL

Maidwell and Uppingham: Forward together We are excited to share the news that from September 2022, Maidwell Hall will be merging with Uppingham School. Maidwell and Uppingham are two schools wholly aligned in our values and, as we formalise our close and long-standing relationship, we are deeply committed to realising a shared vision in which our schools move forward together. Fundamentally, our schools believe in the importance of a holistic education for young people. We share the conviction that a thriving school environment, coupled with exceptional pastoral care and boarding provision, allows pupils to flourish inside and outside the classroom. Both Maidwell and Uppingham nurture a vibrant and energetic environment where pupils feel valued and comfortable to be themselves. Whilst taking the best of our combined histories forward, we embark on this new chapter knowing that there is strength in unity. We look forward to working together as we continue to deliver an exceptional education experience for every one of our pupils.

A collaborative approach

Planning for the future

Over the past 20 years, the relationship between Maidwell Hall and Uppingham School has grown closer and stronger. This merger represents the next logical step in our relationship.

The merger will help to strengthen both schools. Uppingham is committed to investing extensively in Maidwell’s infrastructure, including exciting developments such as the new Pre-Prep building with additional classrooms, and in the longer term, a performance hall and music school.

The merger will enable close collaboration and mutual support between the two schools, empowering each to benefit from the talents and strengths of the other.

Both schools have exciting development plans in place, and these will not be affected by the merger. Uppingham is committed to supporting Maidwell’s strategic vision, as well as delivering its ambitious plans for the future.

Maidwell and Uppingham have a shared educational ethos and vision. Boarding is at the heart of both schools, and we care deeply about the wellbeing and happiness of our pupils. We fundamentally believe that exceptional pastoral care is the foundation of a successful, rewarding, and enjoyable school life. This ethos is grounded in the holistic and broad educational experience we provide at both schools; guiding, nurturing, and inspiring pupils to pursue their passions boldly and enthusiastically. The financial and management commitments of the merger will assure the future of Maidwell Hall, while enabling it to maintain its unique and very special identity.

In addition, close collaboration will enable both schools to benefit from sharing resources and expertise, helping to enrich the educational experience for all pupils and providing opportunities for children from a variety of backgrounds.

The Maidwell Headmaster will run Maidwell Hall on a day-to-day basis and appoint its staff. He will be responsible to the Headmaster of Uppingham and be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team of Uppingham, helping to set the strategic direction for the Uppingham Group of Schools. While the Maidwell governing body will be dissolved, two Maidwell governors will be co-opted onto the Uppingham board of Trustees and sit on a Maidwell committee, formed to deal specifically with Maidwell matters. A ‘Friends of Maidwell’ parent group will be established to maintain communication.

Forging our own paths

Retaining traditions

The merger will not affect pupil choices about progression to senior school. Maidwell will continue to recommend senior schools based on what is right for each child, giving the best possible independent advice and information to parents.

Uppingham is committed to maintaining the unique ethos, spirit, and strengths of Maidwell Hall. As well as the distinctive uniform, special traditions such as tree climbing, boating on the lake, and ‘muckabout’ will continue to enrich the lives of children at Maidwell.

Uppingham School pupils will be unaffected by the merger. There will be no change to Uppingham’s Admissions Policy and the school will continue to welcome pupils from a wide range of feeder schools, countries, and backgrounds.

School fees

Admissions to both schools will continue to be run separately. For pupils that do move on from Maidwell to Uppingham, there will – of course – be close liaison between the relevant departments to ensure a smooth transition.

The fees of each school will be unaffected.

Charitable status Once the legal processes are finalised, Maidwell Hall will be merged into the Uppingham School Charitable Trust.
