“My

uncle once told me, ‘The common glory of us all is the employment in those labors which contribute to the wellbeing of others,’” says Ivan Hand, President and CEO of Money Management International, Inc. (MMI) since 2000. This national nonprofit, headquartered here in Sugar Land, provides personalized financial guidance and expert solutions to distressed consumers. Thanks to Ivan’s vision and leadership, the organization has made impressive strides over the past 18 years... expanding their reach across the country while helping 3.4 million consumers repay over $8 billion in debt. Ivan says, “Our mission at MMI is the wellbeing of the people we are fortunate enough to serve. The details are changing all the time, but in the end, we’re here to help empower people to overcome setbacks and reach their financial goals.” This year, Ivan is a Gulf Coast Finalist for the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year® award—the world’s most prestigious business awards program for entrepreneurs. Recipients are recognized for both their achievement in business, as well as their ability to inspire others with their vision and leadership. “I’m honored to be named as a finalist,” says Ivan. “I hope my inclusion in this field will help bring more attention to the crucial services offered by MMI.” Ivan’s commitment to helping others is evident in both his work and his personal life. He and his wife Star are spotted at every charitable event imaginable. They give both their time and their money. Star is heavily involved in Fort Bend County charities, including Meals on Wheels, the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, and more than 10 years raising funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. They spend a lot of their time making our community a better place! “I’ve been passionate about giving back for as long as I can remember,” says Ivan. “I’m very lucky that Star shares my passion, and it’s why I feel fortunate to have found MMI. Giving families hope and the support they need to overcome their most difficult financial challenges is incredibly satisfying.” The Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2018 Award in the Gulf Coast Area will be awarded on June 14th at the Marriott Marquis Houston. Best of luck to Ivan! Visit www. MoneyManagement.org to learn more about MMI and its confidential, nonprofit services. hen Rodney Lerner purchased his home five years ago, he sought out bids to bring technology into his home. “I needed surround sound and two TVs installed. I wanted the company I hired to procure the equipment, and I wanted to control everything from my Ipad or cellphone. Plus, it all needed to be placed on a stereo rack inside a closet. I wanted no visible wiring.” One of the bids for the work at Rodney’s home came from Halcyon Technologies, a company Rodney knew of through his son’s BNI (Business Network International) group. Rodney says, “Prices were similar, and I chose Halcyon because I had confidence in the BNI relationship my son had with the company. It was the right choice. They were timely and did a great job. They were very knowledgeable about the products installed, and they taught me how to use them as well.”

Halcyon Technologies owner Jason Hane holds a degree in computer engineering, and has more than 20 years experience in audio and visual systems. Halcyon Technologies specializes in home theater, home automation and home security. Jason says, “I believe in precision programming,

theater, including room size and shape, theater sound equipment selection and positioning, screen selection and positioning, video projector quality, source components, automation and programming, and wiring.” “As we did for Rodney, all home theater components can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet,” continues Jason. “As can most everything in your house! The lights, your security system, music, your A/C system, even your power outlets can be controlled from your smartphone, tablet or a touch panel screen. With a control system for your entire home, your world is at your fingertips...even when you’re not at home!” Since that initial installation, Rodney has called Halcyon Technologies back to his house a few times. “Things occur with electronics,” says Rodney. “And Halcyon Technologies has always stood behind their work. They are a reputable company. When my house was struck by lightning, they came out and replaced several of my components. Each time, they’ve been very responsive. I highly recommend Halcyon Technologies to anyone!”

riginally from Venezuela, Daisy Levinson Krolczyk has called Sugar Land her home for the past 14 years. She has traveled the world and finds Sugar Land the perfect place to live, she calls it her Wonderland. “I find it so beautiful and clean. I love the way it continues to grow and develop, there is something new here every month. I feel like we could visit something new every day and never see it all.” Daisy started seeing Dr. Ulises Baltazar for the treatment of her varicose veins after she moved to Sugar Land. Dealing with varicose veins and spider veins most of her adult life, Daisy was thrilled to find a doctor who was not only an expert in his field, he was patient and kind as well. She says, “Varicose veins are my inheritance, they run in both sides of my family. The doctors I visited in the past made me feel rushed and the procedures were uncomfortable. Dr. Baltazar has never rushed me. He always takes the time to hear what is going on in my life, as well as what is going on with my legs. Dr. Baltazar asks about my husband, Joe. If he knows Joe is in the waiting room, Dr. Baltazar says, ‘Bring him in.’ He never hurries through my appointments.” Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Daisy likes that Dr. Baltazar explains her procedures ahead of time. She says, “He always gives me the pros and cons and lets me decide for myself. During one office visit, he talked to me through the entire procedure. I was so involved with the conversation that I barely felt any discomfort. Even his staff is always helpful and pleasant. Dr. Baltazar really knows what he’s doing. I’ve recommended him a lot. From my first appointment with Dr. Baltazar I felt relaxed and welcomed immediately, it’s like visiting an old friend. He takes a real interest in me and my family. He will be my doctor for the rest of my life.”

Making Friends with the Dentist by Susan Profilet

had needed dental work my entire life,” says Rick Cochran, owner of Fort Bend Music Center. “But I never wanted to go to a dentist.” Rick changed his mind after meeting Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. at a local professional networking event. “We were talking,” says Rick, “and I liked what I heard about Dr. Lomonte’s practice in Stafford. Dr. Lomonte convinced me to visit him at his office...and after I went, I was comfortable with the recommendations he had for me and they were affordable. He rebuilt my whole mouth...I now have all brand-new teeth! All of my procedures were done during the last year, and now Dr. Lomonte keeps me coming back for follow-up visits and regular cleanings. I appreciate that his staff texts me to confirm my appointments, making it easy for me to remember to go.” “I would definitely recommend Dr. Lomonte,” continues Rick. “One of his sayings is ‘Come in as a patient, leave as a friend’... that is definitely true of him and his entire staff. They are both friendly and really care about you. My entire family now goes to Dr. Lomonte...and we really enjoy visit-

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Rick and his family, and even though Rick is the music expert...it’s music to my ears to hear that he’s enjoying his new smile.” A proud native Texan, Dr. Lomonte is originally from Beaumont. He has been practicing dentistry at that same location in Stafford since 1982, and his practice is designed to meet the needs of your entire family. Services include dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, veneers, crowns, bridges, invisalign, whitening, fillings, nightguards, and more. New patients are always welcome. But we know they can’t do it alone!” You don’t have to look far to see Classic Chevy Sugar Land working to make our little piece of the world a better place. Just last month, Classic Chevy Sugar Land hosted a BBQ dinner, with a short program emceed by Johnson Development Co-President and COO Doug Goff, introducing Champion Kids Camp founders Kim and Bill Nash to the Fort Bend community. And the Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Cook-off is in its eighth year and counting. Jeff says, “All those years ago, this chili cook-off was created to benefit the Sugar Land Police Officers’ Association. Thanks to the support of all of you, the cook-off now benefits the entire community of law enforcement and fire protection here in our community!”

Of course, a community presence this strong comes with a firm commitment to that same community. “You’re never just a customer or a sale here at Classic Chevy Sugar Land,” says General Sales Manager Brandon Sine. “You’re our neighbor and that’s how you’re treated. FIX That!

ave you been feeling a little off lately? Maybe you’re not sleeping as soundly as you used to. You find yourself making excuses for why you don’t go to the gym. If you’re a man, you could be seeing more hair in the bristles of your brush or clogging the shower drain. There might be mood changes or a spare tire that’s harder to get rid of. Or—the most dreaded two letters in the English language—ED or erectile dysfunction. How on earth did that happen? Whatever your symptoms, they’re probably subtle and you’re probably attributing them to growing older. But what if you’re wrong about that? According to Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph., owner of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, in many cases it’s not male menopause. It’s low testosterone. “Low testosterone is the difference between you feeling optimistic, energetic, and virile—and you sacked out on the couch all weekend. Even slightly diminished levels can leave you sluggish and irritable. There’s nothing fun about it.” “At Campbell’s Compounding, we can revolutionize the way you feel. When you come in for a personal consultation, we perform a saliva test to check your testosterone levels. By working closely with your primary care physician, we can come up with the perfect dose of testosterone replacement to have you up and running again. It’s simple, efficient, doesn’t take up too much time, and best of all, you feel like you again.” What exactly is a compounding pharmacy and how can Dr. Campbell and his warm, expert staff help you? “When you see the words ‘compounding pharmacy,’ you should think ‘custom designed medication,’” explains Dr. Campbell. “That’s what we do. We can make your medication in doses that are exactly right for you. If you don’t like takCampbell’s Compounding Pharmacy ing pills, no problem. We can mix your medication, your kids’ medication “If our staff can’t make it… or your pets’ medication in candy form, as a lozenge or a topical ointment. then you probably don’t need it!” There really isn’t anything we can’t do. Compounding pharmaceuticals are Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 often less expensive too, which is another reason we have so many loyal, 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 happy customers.” Don’t make the mistake of thinking the way you feel is “how things are Houston • 713-668-4833 now.” You can do so much better! riter Clarence Kelland once said, “My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.” To master plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing— father of three boys and grandfather to the newest Burkhalter, little Wyatt—that philosophy seems to fit the way he and his wife Jennifer raised their sons. “I never told my sons, Luke, Jake and Beau, to go into the family business,” says Alan. “But they grew up watching me do it, and I’m pretty sure that mechanical engineering gene is a strong one. Imagine my surprise when all three of my boys decided to join me and my brother, master plumber Chris Burkhalter, at Alan’s Plumbing.” At Alan’s, family is the language spoken. Alan’s sons, Beau and Luke, are journeymen licensed plumbers. Son Jake is a plumbing apprentice, as are apprentices Jaime and Trevor. Longtime employee Jeff Johnson is also journeyman licensed. The warm and ever-friendly Jennifer answers the phones—and does pretty much everything else at Alan’s Plumbing except the actual plumbing. “She keeps us informed, organized, and on the road,” says Alan. “We couldn’t do it without her.” So is little Wyatt going to be the newest plumber at Team Burkhalter? “Well, it’s too soon to say for sure,” explains Alan. “But Chelsea, my daughter-in-law and Wyatt’s mom, is the daughter of a plumber too! Luke met her at a plumbing supply store. I’m not a

betting man, but those are odds I’d be happy to take.” Unlike profit-first national corporations, all Alan’s Plumbing team members live in the community they serve. “You are more than a customer to us,” says Alan. “You’re family. Our boys played ball with your boys. My own grandfather helped build the San Jacinto monument. We’ve done more than just put down roots here. We’re Texans and that’s why we care so much about the work we do for you. We’re your neighbors as well as your plumbers, and we are accountable to no one but you.” So what can expect from the Alan’s Plumbing team? “Honesty,” says Alan. “Fair and transparent pricing. Leaving your house as clean, if not cleaner, than we found it. Arriving promptly. Doing what we say we’re going to do, within the time we say we’re going to do it. That’s what works—not making pie-in-the-sky promises that no one can deliver on.” The next time you need a plumber, pick up the phone and call Alan’s Plumbing. They’ve got plumbing in their DNA. And who knows? Maybe one of these days, little Wyatt will answer!

FATHER’S DAY Easy Step Bathroom Safety Package ®

ot sure what to give Dad this Father’s Day? How about the gift of safety! According to The National Institute on Aging (NIA), more than one in three seniors over age 65 fall each year, and 80% of these falls are in the bathroom. With a multitude of unforgiving and slippery surfaces, your mom and dad’s current bathroom may not be the safest configuration. Many physicians recommend installing a shower or tub built around the unique needs of elderly adults. But before shelling out the cash for an expensive walk-in tub, you should know that installation requires tearing out the old tub. It may also require the removal of walls, modifying flooring, extensive plumbing modifications, and days—if not weeks—of work. Miracle Method Surface Refinishing, locally owned by Jonee and Paul Barnett, has a faster, more affordable alternative. Jonee says, “If you’ve seen our surface restoration of existing counters, showers, and tubs...you know we’re strongly in favor of ‘aging in place.’ Everyone finds it easier and safer to step into a tub instead of trying to climb over the side. We can install the Easy Step® to an existing tub with or without a door. These installations can be done on porcelain, steel, fiberglass and acrylic tubs.” And as an added bonus, the work can usually be done in a day...and if you save your cut-out, the process is completely reversible! Besides a customized shower or bath, NIA and the American Geriatrics Society also recommend that grab bars be installed. Paul and Jonee can take care of these too! Paul says, “Our Easy Step® Bathroom Safety Package comes with two ADA-approved safety grab bars. These are much stronger than towel racks...which aren’t meant to support weight. In addition to the grab bars, the package includes a slip-resistant surface applied to the bottom of the tub. It’s the same slip-resistant tub bottom that national hotel chains like Marriott commissioned us to use. You can also add on a curved shower rod, hand-held shower nozzle, and tub chair. It makes me feel good knowing we’re installing such a solid, worthwhile product. We really believe in looking out for our customers!” 10 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2018

Phil says, “I wanted an eye doctor close to where I live. Dr. Arnold was always friendly when he came into the bank, so I started seeing him.” Extremely happy, Phil has stuck with Dr. Arnold for seven years and counting. “I see Dr. Arnold for general eye care, and I wear daily disposable contact lenses,” says Phil. “Dr. Arnold is super passionate about what he does. He is very friendly and easily accessible. The service in his office is topnotch. I highly recommend Today’s Vision Sugar Land to others!” As it turns out, Dr. Arnold and CommunityBank of Texas have a lot in common. They’re both made

in Texas! Dr. Arnold is a fifth generation Texan. He’s been practicing optometry at his same Sugar Land location since 1992. Patient care and the most up to date technology available in eye care are integral at Today’s Vision Sugar Land. Dr. Arnold says, “The backbone of patient care at my office is, ‘Be nice!’ That’s it. We’re all about customer service. If you come in with a problem, we are going to fix it. I tell my staff...there should be nobody out there nicer than us!” And “Be nice!” is what customers find at CommunityBank of Texas—a mid-size bank born in Houston. “We are a small town bank that’s big enough to do the big deals,” says Phil. “I support the lending for the Southwest part of Houston. Since we are based locally, we can make quick loan decisions. We are proudly present in the lives of our clients and our communities. And

like Dr. Arnold, we take great pride in being friendly and nice. Maybe it’s because we’re from Texas, but we know that in order to continue our success, we have to out-service all other financial institutions.” The word “Friendship” was adopted as the Texas state motto because the name Texas or Tejas was the Spanish pronunciation of a Caddo Indian word that means “friends” or “allies.” We love that these local made-in-Texas businesses have adopted this same motto into their everyday dealings. ostalgia may be a file that removes the rough edges from the “good old days,” but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the differences between now and then. Let’s take a 1930 Ford Model A truck, for instance. It’s a beautifully crafted piece of Americana, the workhorse of its time and built to last. Do we make automotive works of art like that now? Well, not in the price range that most of us can afford. But there is one thing we do a lot better now than we did back then. Can you guess what it is? Air Conditioning! Anyone tempted to yearn for simpler times must remember what life was like before air conditioning. Before air conditioning, we had elaborately painted ladies’ fans and handcranked ice cream. President James Garfield owned an impractical and woefully ineffective device that blew air through bedsheets doused in ice water. It wasn’t until 1902 that a forebear of the modern air conditioner was invented. By the 1930s, air conditioning spread to movie theaters, office buildings, and finally residential

ack in 2015, Laurie Minard remodeled her master bathroom and stoned her fireplace with the help of Teri Gilberg (better known as the Re-Modelista). Back then, she told us how Teri made what could have been an overwhelming process easy and enjoyable. Thanks to Hurricane Harvey, Laurie recently found herself needing to remodel most of her first floor. She was so impressed with Teri’s work three years ago, she called on her again to help with putting her house back together. “Teri visits her jobs every day to oversee things,” says Laurie. “This was a big project, and I needed someone I could trust. Teri is that person.” The remodel in Laurie’s home included floors, baseboards, window sills, trim, cabinets, and the sheetrock four feet from the floor. Laurie also took the opportunity to do some things she may not have otherwise done in a regular remodel. “We removed a support beam and opened the kitchen to the family room, which required running two additional beams to support the side of the house. Since we lost the bottom four stairs, we put in all new stairs. The fireplace had to be redone, so we put in custom cabinetry on either side. We also put a full wall of custom cabinetry in the study. In the pantry, we knocked out a coat closet to put in an extra two feet for a coffee bar with custom cabinetry. It’s the most wonderful little room. It has my coffee pot, my toaster and drawers for my coffee pods.” To aid in design and picking out materials, Teri recommended Laurie visit Christine at ProSource. “Christine was very

knowledgeable,” says Laurie. “She really knows her products. Your give her your budget, and she points you in the right direction. She helped with flooring, tile for the bath, my backsplash and countertops.” Laurie did not live in her home during the remodel. She says, “Teri’s crews were trustworthy and courteous. They always locked up the house when they left. Teri sent pictures every day of the progress, just in case I couldn’t make it there to see for myself. Due to a materials shortage after the hurricane, we had many delays waiting for materials. I always felt informed, never out of the loop.” And the finished product? “We did a lot of different things in the house,” says Laurie. “I just love it! Of course I recommend Teri. She’s the best!”

orld-renowned chef and co-owner of the ever-popular Hoggs-nChicks and Live Oak Grill (with friend/partner Roque Baecker), Frédéric Perrier has partnered with longtime friend Tao La to bring The Slanted Frog to Fort Bend County! Chef Perrier says, “Tao and his family own Kim Són and NAM Noodles and More. I’ve known the family for more than 20 years. I enjoy their food. I love Vietnamese and Asian food in general. My kids and I have been eating Dim Sum at Kim Són every Sunday for many, many years. Because I’m French, the La family call me a ‘frog.’ Because I love Vietnamese food and I’m very good with chopsticks...Tao and his brothers nicknamed me ‘slanted frog.’” Always wanting to open something together, Chef Perrier and Tao went for it when a space opened up on Plantation Drive. The new concept is southern comfort meets Asian comfort, and Tao’s nickname for Chef seemed

the perfect moniker for the restaurant: The Slanted Frog! Chef Perrier says, “This isn’t fusion. It’s my southern comfort food with a touch of French (think truffle mac and cheese, cornbread with queso, honey and bacon) on the menu next to Vietnamese and Asian dishes like pho and ramen with some fun tweaks too. We also offer your favorite traditional comfort foods, including chicken fried steak,

buttermilk chicken tenders, General Tso’s chicken and fried rice. We want a family of four to come in and feel at ease...comfortable. With this concept we have the leeway to truly have something for everyone. In my own family, the kids and I love Asian...but my wife, she wants the truffled mac! Here everyone can order their favorites!” With a large patio, The Slanted Frog is planning live bands and even some outdoor cooking on the grill and smoker in the near future. Chef Perrier is also planning a funky and inexpensive wine list. Private events, catering and carry-out are all available. Bring your entire family and enjoy the comforts of The Slanted Frog. He subsequently opened two highly successful Japanese restaurants in the Houston area: Kaneyama and Sushi King. In 2011, Keeper brought his cuisine to Sugar Land...his hometown since 1995. Keeper says, “My father died the same year I opened Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant is not only close to my house, but I could also take care of my mom who lives close by. She is 84 years old and she’s my angel. She’s always at the restaurant...talking to customers, checking in on the kitchen chef, and giving us a hard time. My team knows we all try to make Mom happy, because her happiness is important to me!” And not only is Mom happy, Sugar Land is happy! Keeper’s reputation for fabulous sushi and entrees is unparalleled. His best (and nearly only!) advertising is word of mouth. “Quality is everything,” says Keeper. “Only myself or my head chef goes to the fish supplier every day to choose the fish. I am picky. 65-75% of our sushi bar is raw. It must be top quality. For nineteen years, I didn’t trust anybody else to pick the fish. Now I have one other guy...but I still stop by and check what he picked!” Not sure about sushi or Japanese? Try Keeper’s! The staff enjoys making recommendations...whether you prefer sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, tempura, soup, salad, or maybe try one of Keeper’s inventive entrees like the Chilean Sea Bass.

www.upclosemagazine.com

Many Fort Bend residents previously unsure about sushi have left Keeper’s loving it. And the sushi aficionados are spoiled...they won’t eat it anywhere else! It’s a point of pride for Keeper. “I want everyone to feel welcome here. This is not my restaurant, this is Sugar Land’s restaurant...a community of many cultures. I love that each time I walk in, I see customers of many different ages, ethnicities and cultures enjoying my food.” As for Keeper, Texas and Sugar Land are home. “I’ve been very lucky,” says Keeper. “I have five children: Vincent, Ronny, Molly, Chris and newborn baby Charles. I have a wonderful life with my wife Bell. Our kids are all native Texans. This is home: Texas and Sugar Land. People ask if I plan to branch out or expand. I see no reason, I have it all right here. My mom, my family, and Sugar Land. Thank you for being a part of my restaurant.” Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant & Bar 281-242-0389 4654 Highway 6 South, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.keepersushi.com

Pacific Inspired,

I

by Amy Sharp

f you’ve ever visited the Pacific Ocean, you’ve noticed the difference. In a league of its own, it’s an ocean boasting attitude and edge. That’s what Lincoln and Lyndsay Ward have created at Sugar Land’s hottest new eatery, Pacific Coast Tacos. Pacific Coast Tacos is an original concept by Lincoln and Lyndsay. Lyndsay says, “People always ask if PCT is a franchise? Proudly we can say, ‘No.’ This is our original idea born right here in Sugar Land TX!” “We wanted to bring something different to this community,” says Lincoln. “We, along with our team leaders Robby and Dana Bulian, put in a ton of research in the Pacific Rim, bringing in flavors from the West Coast of the States down to Mexico and South America. The menu reflects influences from Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Hawaii and French Polynesia.” Lincoln and Lyndsay introduce an inventive and ambitious concept the culinary world hasn’t seen in Pacific Coast Tacos. This concept is truly cutting edge

16 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2018

and forward thinking in menu and design. Pacific Rim influences such as Poke Bowls, Won Ton Lobster Tacos, and Tom Kha Soup compliment a collection of the most flavorful and unique tacos anywhere. Fresh Pacific Ceviche’ and PCTs signature Guac topped with fresh mango, jicama, green apple and radish exemplify the creativeness of PCTs culinary identity. “Taco ’bout Tacos?” Enjoy the Korean Beef Taco. CAB beef sliced fresh and soaked in scratch bulgogi marinade, seared to perfection and topped with shredded napa cabbage, cilantro, sliced radish, scallion, citrus soy, and chili sauce served in a fresh sliced jicama tortilla. Other popular selections are the Pacific Octopus Taco, the Hawaiian Kalua Pork Taco, and the Thai Chili Chicken Taco which calls for a unique scratch Thai marinade created by Lyndsay. Lyndsay combines exotic Thai herbs and spices producing an amazing depth of flavor. This taco is topped with sprouts, julienned carrots, cilantro, peanut sauce, chili sauce, fried jalapenos, and served on a fresh sliced jicama tortilla.

This scratch kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But you’ll find no walk-in cooler or freezer at Pacific Coast Tacos... the freshest herbs, spices, fruits, vegetables, and proteins available are delivered daily. GM Robby Bulian, who has also contributed to the Pacific inspired menu, says, “Our team arrives as early as 5am to make the corn and flour tortillas by hand for the day.” PCT’s signature jicama tortillas are sliced fresh from the root vegetable, and the wide selection of salsas at the salsa bar are also made from scratch daily. Equally on par with the fantastic food is the full bar at Pacific Coast Tacos. We’re talking atmosphere and selection. Falling in line with the quality of the food served is an excellent selection of cocktails, margaritas, beer, and wine. Natural agaves are infused with fresh fruits, vegetables, and peppers right in the kitchen. This bar is also all about mezcals and tequila. Lincoln and Robby agree, “We are super excited to introduce unique tequila and mezcal flights to the Fort Bend community! Tequila and mezcal have so much to offer with

Men unique brands and distilling processes. They are truly amazing spirits enjoying a height in popularity and renaissance.” Enlighten your palate with refreshing cocktails such as the PCT Watermelon Cocktail and the Zesty Strawberry cocktail, both inspired by renowned bar/cocktail specialist Justin Nobriago at Malibu Farms in Malibu, California. Red and Rosé Sangrias, along with a quality over quantity selection of margaritas, are also available. Let’s talk design! Spacious and clean with arguably the best atmosphere in Sugar Land, PCT boasts a semi-open air kitchen design with large garage doors opening to a covered patio highlighting the natural waters of Sugar Creek. Eye-catching materials such as contrasting Italian tiles, white-washed shiplap, and custom metal framing create an edgy and energetic vibe reflecting the innovative and ambitious works of local architect Robert White. “Working with Robert and sharing our vision of Pacific Coast Tacos was an amazing experience,” say Lincoln and Lyndsay. “It was inventive, organic, and adventurous all at once!” Of course, Lincoln is no stranger to the restaurant world. He started as a dishwasher at Captains Half Shell Oyster Bar at age 17. After working nearly every position in the restaurant biz, he had numerous manager stints in both Sugar Land and Houston. Lincoln took his first swing at creating, operating and growing a concept seven and a half years ago with The Rouxpour. He hit that one out of the park! “It was an exciting time for my wife and I, and a wonderful learning experience,” says Lincoln. “We hope the team we created there maintains the systems and philosophies we put into place so they can continue to experience success.” Pacific Coast Tacos caters and hosts events both at the restaurant and off-site. While influenced by the Pacific Rim, all recipes were created by Lincoln and Lyndsay Ward with help from their incredible team. “We did a ton of tastings over the years,” says Lincoln. “Our kids—Denzel, Abigail and Lauryn—would complain, ‘Not tacos again!’” The Ward family and team have two new concepts on the “back burner” for Sugar Land to get excited about for 2019-2020. We can’t wait to hear what they’re taste testing now!

WONDERING WHAT TO GET DAD

FOR FATHER’S DAY?

I

by Amy Sharp

t’s a struggle for most of us. We think of him as the man that can do anything, and the man that has everything. But the answer is easy: Every dad loves a plate of madefrom-scratch Tex Mex finished off with an ice cold beer! Take dad to Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant for Father’s Day—where the portions are large and the food is always fresh and hot. It’s dinner fit for a king. (And dad!) Lupita’s was opened in 2003 by the Jaime and Lupe Garcia family. Bring dad in to try fellow dad Jaime’s favorite, the Chili Rellenos: a pan fried poblano pepper filled with picadillo and topped with ranchero sauce and monterey cheese. In the mood for something different? The best selling dish at Lupita’s is the Stuffed Avocado. Jaime says, “Our Stuffed Avocados are made fresh to order. Choose shrimp, chicken, beef fajita or vegetable. We make it when you order it, and we promise you’ll enjoy it!” Lupita’s is also planning a few Father’s Day specials. Check their Facebook page for details! The month of June will bring some permanent menu additions to the Lupita’s menu, including Taco de Carnitas and Enchiladas Suizas. Jaime says, “The new entrees will remain true to our promise: always fresh ingredients and made to order. It’s something new and we hope you like it!” Be sure to stop in and give these a try! No Tex Mex meal would be complete without cervezas and margaritas. That’s why Lupita’s Happy Hour runs seven days a week, including Sundays. It’s easy to celebrate dad with his favorite beer. Most domestics are available, and imports include Bohemia, Corona Lite, Corona, Carta Blanca, Tecate, Dos XX Amber, Dos XX Lager and Negra Modelo. Throwing a pool party or celebrating something special this summer? No matter the occasion, Lupita’s has the flavor your guests will love. Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant catering includes fresh, fabulous fajitas marinated with hand-ground spices delivered to your party and kept hot in chafing dishes. “Give us a call to discuss all of your catering options,” says Jaime. “We are always available to help you throw a really fun fiesta.” “Thank you to our regulars and our new customers that have dropped in and shared meals with our family,” adds Jaime. “Lupe, Rigo, Leo and I appreciate the many wonderful years of loyalty and support. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, and we’ll see you soon!”

ASK MARGIE The Lawyer Who Cares

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

Helping YOU Accomplish YOUR Goals

odd Breton, a Project Manager with Germania Insurance, is the fall marathon training coach for local running club, Fort Bend Fit. “Fort Bend Fit was founded for individuals who wanted to train for one of our local winter marathons (Houston or the USAFit marathon here in Sugar Land),” says Todd. “We are a tight-knit community that’s all about focusing on goals and accomplishing them. Today, Fort Bend Fit has grown into training for all distances, including full and half marathons, 10Ks and 5Ks... with many members doing fall marathons like Chicago, Berlin, the Marine Corp marathon and Dublin. As the new ‘fall’ coach, I work out a training plan for each of these fall races.” Fort Bend Attorney and fellow fitness enthusiast Margie Connolly says, “As a running coach and mentor, Todd is not only setting goals for himself, he’s helping others achieve their goals! That’s what I do. Think of me as your ‘planning for the future’ coach. I help you set goals for your estate, and a plan for the future as you grow older and into retirement. And we adjust as the situation changes. We all want to provide for our loved ones both in the present and after we are gone. My job is to help you accomplish that!” When Todd’s mother-in-law passed away, he contacted Margie for legal help. Todd’s in-laws have a family trust for their grandchildren. Todd knew with the changing situation, the trust needed to be looked at and analyzed. Todd says, “I had questions about how it works. Was it revocable or irrevocable? We needed to ensure everything was covered and fair to the grandchildren. Margie was very involved in interpreting the family trust and going over where we are. It’s a relief that is taken care of. I will be contacting Margie again soon to redo our will. Our current will is over 20 years old, and our financial situation is much different now. I do recommend Margie to help with these important pieces of life.” For more information about Fort Bend Fit, visit www.usafitfortbend.com. Margaret McCullough Connolly, PLLC

Attention Ninja Warriors The Best Summer Camp in Sugar Land by Amy Sharp

F

Just Got Better!

or 25 years, Safety America has hosted the most fun, safe and “mom-friendly” camp in Sugar Land. And this year, Safety America summer campers get to tackle the all new ninja-kid warrior course as part of their camp experience! Owner Bob Gifford says, “There are a multitude of benefits to a ninja-kid warrior course, including focus and concentration, increased agility, better flexibility, improved balance, increased core strength, learning how to fall safely, spatial awareness and

gaining confidence. But most importantly, it’s fun!” In fact, everything about this summer camp is fun. There’s a half hour of karate instruction each morning, the ninjakid warrior course, Parkour obstacles, a 30’ indoor rock climbing wall, 70’ indoor zipline, a double warped wall, 16’ balance beam and a rope swing. There will also be weekly field trips to the Sugar Land Ice Center and Sugar Land Gymnastics. “Most kids like variety. They have more fun when they have the opportunity to do a lot of different activities.” And if that’s not enough, the tried and true favorite at Safety America summer camps is the tricks performed daily by Bob’s Boston Terriers. “The kids just love it. This year my dog Panda is on board to do the tricks...and maybe Yoda too!” So what makes this camp “mom-friendly?” At Safety America you don’t commit to a period of time. You can just sign up for one day, one week...whatever you like. You can even drop in with no appointment. This camp fits mom’s schedule and it’s safe! Bob says, “Safety is a big

deal for me. It’s why I named my facility Safety America. I want kids to have an incredible summer...safely.” Safety America summer camps are open to kids ages 4 to 13. Get a taste of the ninja-kid warrior course during summer camp, then consider ninja-kid warrior classes next fall. Bob says, “Ninja-kid warrior training may be the perfect athletic outlet for kids who haven’t found their place in traditional team sports. Wai-Shan Lee and Philip Go’s Story

ai-Shan Lee and Philip Go were casually looking for a new home when they met KW (Keller Williams) Southwest agent Mona Parikh at an open house. “We chatted,” says Wai-Shan. “And Mona got my contact information. She followed up twice afterward to see if we were ready to buy a home. She was very proactive, but not aggressive. I really liked her approach!”

They liked Mona’s approach so much, Wai-Shan and Philip chose to use Mona when they decided to actively look. “My husband and I sat down with her, and again, Mona was very proactive,” says Wai-Shan. “She would send me listings of houses in the parameters we had set. She was very efficient through that process, and always available to look at houses when we wanted to. One Friday morning, I saw the listing of our dream home on HAR.com. The house was incredibly beautiful and priced to sell. I texted Mona at 6am that morning. I wanted to see the house, and put in an offer before the weekend if we liked it. She replied within minutes, saying ‘I’m on it.’. Mona secured us a showing appointment that same day, and we put in an offer that day as well. We were the first offer and it was accepted! During

the option period, Mona was very responsive, but not pushy... just nice! She did all she could, and kept me on my toes to make sure we did what we needed to do. We turned to her for lots of referrals, including the house inspection.” “We spent several months looking for the perfect home for WaiShan and Philip,” says Mona. “As the buying agent, I educated Wai-Shan about the buying process and all the steps, working hard to make sure she had the answers to her questions during the process. When she found her dream home, we put the offer in immediately...and I negotiated an amazing price for the home significantly below list price!” “I’m still really impressed Mona answered my text at 6am,” says Wai-Shan. “I truly believe we got the house because of Mona. I highly recommend her. She’s on top of everything. When you are competing in a fast-paced market, Mona is what you need!” Are you ready to buy or sell in the fast-paced Fort Bend market? Dr.

Alireza Somji and his wife, Dr. Sana Somji, are both optometrists. They own Horizon Eye Care and Optical right here in Sugar Land. They also have two young children. “It’s a crazy lifestyle,” says Dr. Somji. “The kids and the practice do not leave much time for exercise. I don’t have one and a half hours to go to the gym!” A year and a half ago, Dr. Somji’s wife gave him a trial membership to Koko FitClub for his birthday. Koko FitClub, locally owned by Mark and Veronica Malhiot, is a technology-driven system designed to individualize the exercise experience for everyone. It’s digital equipment that uses your own data to design a workout plan just for you. Eighteen months later, and Dr. Somji is still going to this gym. “First, most of my workouts are only 30 minutes,” says Dr. Somji. “It’s effective and it makes sense. My USB stick tracks everything. It tells me what I’ve done and what I need to do. There’s no waiting for machines or waiting for weights. The Koko algorithms have done the thinking for me, so I can be in the right mindset and get the workout done. In addition to the exercise plan, Koko provides me with a diet plan through their Fuel School and meal plans. I’m not as disciplined as I should be with my diet, but I have made changes based on their suggestions.” Dr. Somji’s eye care practice, Horizon Optical, is 100% independent and family-owned. “We are a full service optical serving patients ages four years and up,” says Dr. Somji. “Since I started going to Koko FitClub, I find I have a lot more energy to get through my busy schedule...seeing patients throughout the day. om Abraham, who co-owns the new Texas Biergarten in Missouri City with his wife Laura, says, “There came a time that Laura and I got so busy with our lives, the cleanliness of our home became a last priority. We just put it off, and our house was never company ready.” “We had seen Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services cars in our neighborhood, and read about them in UpClose magazine,” continues Tom. “We started calling them every so often when we hosted parties at our house. They have a great work ethic, fantastic crews, and Casandra (who co-owns Mahoney’s House Cleaning with her mom Imelda) is so talented and personable...not to mention responsive. Whenever we were in a bind, we called and they helped us out.” Tom and Laura aren’t new to the Fort Bend food scene. Laura’s the mastermind and cook behind Cul-de-sac Cooking, the Facebook page offering fantastic weekly family meals. The couple has been incubating the idea of a restaurant for years.

Their new concept, Texas Biergarten, is reminiscent of Laura’s childhood in The Texas Hill Country and her German heritage. “This is a family-friendly Hill Country inspired German-themed restaurant,” says Tom. “It’s Laura’s vision and passion: Great food, great drinks, and a great atmosphere!” “Now that we are opening a business, we’ve become regular Mahoney’s House Cleaning customers,” says Tom. “I don’t see that changing. It’s a huge weight off our minds! I’m not even sure how Casandra and her mom juggle all of their accounts and still keep it personable...but they do. To me, that’s a great indication of their amazing customer service. “They really

ason Short’s wife Michaelle came down with the flu this spring. “One evening just after dark, it became apparent Michaelle needed to go to the ER,” says Jason. “She was very sick and in a lot of pain.” “I knew if we went to St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, she could be seen right away,” continues Jason. “I called ahead to let them know the situation and that we were on our way. When we arrived, we were met at the door by a nurse and an attending physician. Michaelle was taken to a room immediately and they started evaluating her. They quickly got an IV started...she was dehydrated and in a lot of pain. Making Michaelle as comfortable as possible was a priority. She was diagnosed with the flu. They kept her several hours and gave her several bags of fluids and meds to ease her pain. Once her coloring started coming back, we were given a prescription for her symptoms and Michaelle was discharged. In the following days, the physician (not the nurse or a staff member!) called daily to check on her. That was nice. It sounds cliche, but they really treated us like family. We had never met the nurse or the doctor before. The entire experience was better than any experience we’ve ever had at

any ER. What they’re doing at St. Michael’s is very personable. We highly recommend them!” St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms was founded by Dr. Shannon Orsak and his brother Brian Orsak. “When you come into our ER,” says Dr. Orsak, “we realize you’re not just a patient. You’re our neighbor. Your kid might play Little League on a team we sponsor. You might be the couple at the table next to my wife and I when we’re out to dinner. We aren’t here to take your money, we are here to be a part of this community. We believe St. Michael’s offers the very best care, the kind we want for our own families.” Jason and Michaelle are partners in Texas Gun Club, located right here in Stafford. It’s the highest rated gun range in the Houston area. “Shooting is a fun sport that can be done safely and generationally,” says Jason, a retired Army Captain and military police officer. “We see Texas Gun Club as a legacy...someday our kids will be serving the kids of our members. And like St. Michael’s, we are proud to be a part of this community. We want to get to know you. We invite you all to drop by and tour our beautiful facility!” For more information, visit www.texasgunclub.com. 16062 SW Freeway (at Hwy 6) Sugar Land, TX 77479 281-980-HELP (4357)

St. Michael’s accepts more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. everend Walter Junious, a minister of the Gospel for more than 20 years, accepted his assignment from God to serve as founder and Senior Pastor of The Cross Church here in Fort Bend County just over two years ago. He says, “My wife Veronda and I prayed on that message. We learned God needed us to create a Church for the spiritual transformation of all people.” And on July 10, 2016, The Cross Church was born. “The Cross Church is to this community what the cross of Jesus Christ is to the world,” says Rev. Junious. “It’s not just understanding the Bible, it’s a place of spiritual and emotional change and social and economic transformation. We are impacting and empowering real people.” Attend services at The Cross Church and you can expect high spirited praise and worship, an intimate time of prayer and intercession, a powerful and insightful proclamation of the word of God, and a gracious opportunity to personally respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In addition to Sunday services, The Cross Church takes pride in education through small group ministries. “Our family ministries are designed to meet the needs of all types of families,” says Rev. Junious. “For the well-

He and Veronda are parents to three young adults. Rev. Junious was ordained in March 2000. He holds an Associate’s of Arts

degree in Biblical Studies, and will complete his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Pastoral Leadership this fall. He says, “We’re excited to grow The Cross Church right here in my hometown. ishing is in Dave Kveton’s blood. “I’ve fished saltwater all my life,” says Dave. “At three, my dad would take me out to Port Bolivar in boats he built. My own son mastered the rod and reel by five. In 1995, I opened El Pescador Lodge in Port O’Connor so I could spend my days doing what I love best.” But a boat ride with a friend in 1999 changed Dave’s career path. “It was the best ride I’d ever had,” says Dave. “So good in fact...I bought the company. (But don’t worry...I still find plenty of time for fishing!)” Today El Pescador Boats offers the fastest catamaran hull (cat hull) shallow water boat in it’s class. “There’s a lot of players in this

space,” says Dave, “and we waited...looking at the good and the bad before we designed one ourselves. The hull is constructed with the most up-to-date composite available (no wood!) and it does it all. It runs shallow, comes up shallow, and it’s an extremely dry and comfortable ride. Even in 20-30 mph winds...you can fish. Just today I was running with my three anglers from Baffin Bay back to Flour Bluff in a northeast wind 25+ mph all the way. It was a fast, smooth and dry ride with a 2 ft chop and never got a drop of water on anyone.” And these cats—favorites of professional guides, serious sports fishermen, and weekenders alike—aren’t mass produced. They’re custom built. “Come in and we

can put together a design, then build to your specifications. Choose your Evinrude E-TEC G2, pick a color (or two!)...then outfit as you wish. We can do power poles, GPS, stereo and trolling motors.” Have a new idea? “Show it to us and if it works... we’ll build it.” Call Dave for a demo ride today and experience the best cat hull in Texas for yourself! Fantastic New Floors

hen Jennifer Diamond wanted to replace the downstairs tile in her home with hardwood floors, she turned to her neighbors for recommendations. “Lone Star Floors did the flooring in a few other houses on my street,” says Jennifer. “My neighbors spoke highly of them, so I stopped by their

showroom.” At Lone Star Floors, Jennifer worked with Sam. “Sam was very helpful,” says Jennifer. “At least five different times, I took home floor samples to see what I thought. Then I had him order additional swatches for me. I wanted to make sure I got the right color, and Sam brought in more options when I asked. He by Amy Sharp really went above and beyond. I was so impressed, Lone Star Floors was my only bid to do the work.” “The installation team sent by Lone Star Floors was excellent,” continues Jennifer. “They carefully partitioned off the areas where the floors were being replaced, trying to control the dust as much as possible. The work was finished a day or two ahead of the projected schedule. They did a great job. The day they finished, they went out and got furniture pads to put on my furniture to ensure it didn’t scratch the new floor. They had moved a rather large piece of furniture to the top of the stairwell to serve as a barrier protecting the upstairs from the dust. After they cleaned up and left on the last day, I realized they had forgot to move it back...so I had my teenager do it. Just as we got the piece moved back into place, my doorbell rang. The crew realized they forgot and turned around and came back. I thought that was the most thoughtful thing, because they didn’t have to do that, of course. But they did.”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Life without migraine headaches is so much better!!

T

by Amy Sharp

wenty-one-year-old Ally Walker was a gymnast when she was little. She ran track at Dulles High School, and years ago she was in a car accident. Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center says, “All of these factors plus stress contributed to a misalignment in Ally’s spine.” A couple of years ago, Ally started experiencing severe migraine headaches. “I moved from one stressful job to another,” says Ally, who was a manager at Sweet & Sassy until it closed and is now the Children’s Coordinator at Lifetime Fitness. “I’m on my feet all day. I tried one chiropractor, with no success. I was taking a Bayer aspirin, Aleve or Advil every day. My doctor didn’t do anything but recommend I continue the OTC pain relievers, and they were getting pretty expensive.” Ally’s mom, Monique, found relief from her own migraines through treatment with Dr. Harris. Monique says, “I told Ally she just had to find the right chiropractor.” Influenced by her mom, who has given testimonies at conventions about her results with Dr. Harris, Ally scheduled a consultation. Ally says, “After just two adjustments, my headaches stopped. In addition to my treatment plan, Dr. Harris recommended a special pillow for the back of my neck to help me sleep comfortably. I haven’t had a pain reliever in my mouth since that second appointment. Life changes still bring on stress for me, and if I’m caught off guard it can trigger the pain. When this happens, I add an extra session or two with Dr. Harris in addition to my ongoing maintenance plan to keep the pain away.” “What we love most is that Dr. Harris is a hugger!” agree both Ally and Monique. “And he makes us laugh,” says Ally. “Whenever I come in wearing my ripped jeans, he always quips, ‘Sorry about your jeans!’” Ally’s dad, a cameraman for channel 13, recently started his own plan with Dr. Harris. “He’s had that camera on his right shoulder for 40+ years,” says Ally. “He was hurting.” Well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philanthropist and humanitarian, Dr. Steve Harris is known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach in a friendly and personable environment. Monique says, “Every person in that office is our friend, and what Dr. Harris is doing works! I love that Ally is getting to take advantage of this in her 20s. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and treatment with Dr. Harris is a good bowl of pudding! We highly recommend him!”
