or almost 30 years, Alan’s Plumbing has been the go-to, honest, licensed plumbing company here in Fort Bend. In the beginning, the team consisted of founder Alan Burkhalter and his wife, Jennifer. Today, the growing company with an impressive truck fleet works like a welloiled machine, in large part thanks to the
McFarland, and trusted receptionist, Katy Rogers, make sure the administrative side runs smoothly for their customers.
“My mom, Katie, and Katy are the oil that keeps the machine running. Nothing gets done without them,” says Luke Burkhalter, son of Alan and longtime plumber with Alan’s Plumbing. “If our company was the human body, they would be the heart.”
“We wear several hats in the office every day,” Katie explains. “We answer calls and schedule client appointments, we pull city permits and coordinate inspections for jobs, and we keep track of when routine vehicle maintenance is needed. We also make sure all plumbing licenses are up to date, market the company and plumbing work on social media, and even sometimes have to put on our ‘tech support’ hat to resolve technical issues with ipads, phone systems, and scheduling software.”
When someone needs a plumber, they usually need it fast. Scheduling appointments can be harder than these ladies make it look. “Coordinating a visit around our clients’ schedules requires a lot of flexibility on our side. Sometimes clients have to leave work early to meet us, or we have to coordinate around their kids’ school schedules or an important doctor appointment. We do our best to ensure our plumbers are available and arrive within the agreed time frame, even if it’s early in the morning or after office hours,” Katy says.
The back office is the front line for all plumbing calls. The ladies may pick up the phone to a panicking customer who came home from work to water pouring out of their ceiling. “Before any information is taken, we calmly walk the customer through the first step – getting to the main shut off valve to the house and turning it off to contain the leak,” Katie says.
“The wonderful ladies are everything and more. They are where it all starts, the first experience our customer has with our company,” says Beau Burkhalter, Alan’s son and longtime plumber with the business. “They care for this company like it’s their own. We couldn’t do what we do without them. They are the heartbeat of the company.”
Alan and his brother, Chris, work alongside the team of plumbers that includes Beau and Luke (youngest brother Jake does plumbing sales), longtime plumbers Jaime, Christian, and Anthony, and apprentices Nick, Noah, PJ, and David.
“We absolutely love our plumbers!” Jennifer concludes. “It’s easy to support them when we know our plumbers go out in the field every day with the mentality Alan ingrained in them from the beginning: do the right thing, provide quality plumbing, AND service for the community we all live in and love.”

Cathy Stubbs, the leader of the Cathy Stubbs Team, feels extremely fortunate to live and work in one of the most beautiful communities in the world. “I know everything there is to know about Fort Bend County,” she says, “and I bring that to the table for every conversation, negotiation, and transaction I’m involved in.”

Q: Why is being a Realtor a rewarding career, especially for women?
Tracy W: It’s never a dull moment! It allows you to help people’s dreams come true. You create relationships and friendships that last a lifetime. The flexibility allows you to be a great mom, wife, and agent.
Brittany: Real estate has unlimited earning and growth opportunities. It also allows us to have flexibility so we can close deals all while still being able to show up for our kids and/or family and support them.
Q: What qualities make women such successful Realtors?
Tiffani: The ability to multi-task – Realtors juggle many things at one time and women typically do this with ease and confidence. Also, the ability to communicate, listen, and empathize with clients is crucial, and I believe women are natural at this.
Tracy B: Women often bring a natural sense of care and connection to the home, which resonates deeply in real estate. A combination of empathy, organization, and resilience makes us incredibly effective Realtors.
Q: Share a positive experience working with many strong, successful women.
Sawyer: Working on a team of confident, driven women creates an atmosphere of encouragement, collaboration, and celebration. Our
weekly team meetings are always uplifting, not just about business, but encouraging each other, sharing wins, and growing as a team.
Tiffani: We share a great friendship together. We are all at different ages and at various stages in our lives, yet we provide each other with the guidance and support that build our team and make it stronger.

Exchange Club of Sugar Land Welcomes New Leadership

he Exchange Club goes through a transition every July 1st, saying farewell to the current president, while welcoming the incoming president. 2025 marks an exciting occasion –current president, Camille Edwards, will pass the torch to another female president, Juli Fournier.
Camille has lived in Fort Bend since 2011. “My tenure as president has been very fulfilling and very eye-opening about all of the great Fort Bend organizations that the club helps,” she says. “The people in Exchange are everyday, hard-working Americans who want to help make Fort Bend County a better place to live.”
Juli has been an Exchange member for a dozen years. “I got involved because our daughters received Exchange Club scholarships in high school,” she explains. “I thought it was a great opportunity for me to get involved in the community where I live. My passion is the Exchange Club youth awards program.”
The club awards annual scholarships to high school seniors at Kempner and Clements to help secure their educational future. They also have the ACE (Accepting Challenge of Excellence) award given to those students who have overcome great challenges in their lives.
“Juli is very business-oriented and will be great for our fiscally responsible organization. I see her being able to streamline our processes to be able to do more things in our community,”
Camille remarks.
Being president of the Exchange Club is no small feat. Camille has three jobs outside of her volunteer role – she owns Business Spirit, a promotional products company, and 2nd Legacy Estate Sales. On
May 1st, she opened Texas Southern Charm Antiques, Collectibles & Gifts, a shop in downtown Rosenberg. She spends her spare time with her six grown children and her husband of 11 years.
Incoming president, Juli, is busy in her own right. Managing Partner of Stephenson Fournier for almost a decade, Juli represents clients at her law firm in business transactions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate, limited liability company, partnership, securities, financing, tax, and general business matters. She and her husband of 34 years have two adult children.
“The Exchange Club is a special group of service-minded members who join forces to help our Fort Bend neighbors,” Juli concludes. “To serve is a privilege. I want to build on our 38-year legacy and deepen our involvement with our charitable projects.”

DARREN’S JOINS HUSBAND MELISSA
FITNESS BUSINESS

"I’m a hype woman. I love encouraging people,” says Melissa Stewart. “My goal is to help clients lead healthier lives.”
After Melissa and Darren Stewart, of Sugar Land’s Fitness by Darren, were married last year, she relocated from Houston to Sugar Land. “I didn’t expect to live in the burbs,” she laughs. “But we were both self-employed – Darren had his gym, while I worked from home. So it made the most sense for me and my 66-lb. dog, Sophie, to make the move. I really like Sugar Land. It has everything Houston has to offer.”
Melissa has been training since 2010. She’s keeping her real estate license active, but is moving into fitness training to work alongside Darren. “He was very encouraging. Being married to someone in the industry, we realized we can do it as a team. I love working out and seeing the transition in people. I remember that feeling of fear being the girl at the gym who didn’t know how the equipment worked,” Melissa says.
For almost 15 years, Darren has been sharing his fitness expertise with the residents of Sugar Land. “Fitness is the Fountain of Youth,” he explains. “It’s so important to be healthy.”
The goal of helping clients live healthy comes from a personal place for Melissa. In 2010, right after her first and only fitness competition, Melissa was diagnosed with epilepsy.
“Because of my health, I had to put a pause on competitions,” she explains. “I’ve been on a journey since 2011 – lots of doctors and uncertainty to get to the point where it’s finally under control. It’s a lifelong process. But I don’t let it affect me working out. I feel better when I work out, and my doctor says working out helps my heart and brain. Darren is my biggest cheerleader. He helps me stay positive and find solutions.”
Now called Fitness by Darren & Melissa, the couple helps people create a healthy lifestyle. “We’re a fitness family,” Darren says. “I run almost every day and lift a lot of weights to keep a balanced workout approach.”

On April 15, more than 60 attendees filled the upstairs room at Talyard Brewing Co. for the annual UpClose Magazine Women in Business photo shoot and mixer.
The Barbie-themed event was PINK, with tons of pink flowers, pink sugar cookies, and several ‘professional’ Barbies as centerpieces. The Women Behind the Events at Talyard

Beer is thought to have been invented by the Sumerians, who lived in what is now Iraq, around 8,000 BC. Ancient tablets have been unearthed showing the original brewers were women. The Sumerians even had a goddess of beer, Ninkasi.
In 2025, women are still involved in beer culture, at least at Talyard Brewing Co. When you schedule your event here, there’s a team of helpful women dedicated to making it special. The women, who love working here, credit owners Chuck Laughter and Keith Teague with making people feel welcome and comfortable, and creating an equitable workspace for the women of Talyard.
Valerie is your sales manager. Caitlyn is your event coordinator. Erin handles marketing needs. And Marilyn is the floor manager.
Did women create beer?
Valerie: “We have lots of experience bringing people together. The impact a single event can have is wide and lasting. We had one tasting with 20 people who knew nothing about beer. As they learned, they all had a team bonding moment together.”
Caitlyn: “I was born in Sugar Land. I moved to other places, but came back with my threeyear-old son. Sugar Land is so family friendly. Just like Talyard. I love working for a familyowned business. It’s also very versatile. You can do almost anything here. I take the project from Valerie and make sure the details are brought to life for our clients.”
Erin: “I do photography, videography, social media, and the website. Talyard is elegant and casual at the same time. There’s just no place like it. It’s pet and family friendly. It offers Pickleball, live music, and
BBQ. We’re not like a normal brewery – we always make sure guests are taken care of at the end of the day. It goes back to being good to people.”
Marilyn: “Our team is great. Everyone is very enthusiastic about what they do to make guests feel at home. The beer is great and there’s something for everybody. We’re a multi-purpose venue whose team members work hard to make the client’s vision come to life.”

Sugar Land natives Lauren and Alex Sowell have been doing life together a long time. They met in elementary school when they were in the same second grade class. In 2004, she graduated from Dulles High School and he graduated from Elkins High School. They’re both Aggies. They have two boys together. And they’re now franchise owners of the Missouri City location of DoubleDave’s Pizzaworks.
“Alex worked at DoubleDave’s in high school and had great memories. And DoubleDave’s is an Aggie thing,” Lauren explains. “The previous location nearby closed in 2017 after a successful 13 years in business. We wanted to bring DoubleDave’s back to our community. DoubleDave’s culture involves everyone from the past having positive memories of this place.”
Lauren is a human dynamo. Besides running things with Alex at DoubleDave’s, she is a vocalist in three bands (she plays the keytar!), she is a National Anthem singer for the Space Cowboys, Astros, and other sports events in our community, she sings at her church (local St. Laurence Catholic

Church), she’s on a Houston Rodeo committee booking music for the NRG Center Hall E entertainment, and she works a day job as a digital marketing specialist.
“My passions generally revolve around music,” she says. “We have live music at DoubleDave’s every Friday night and recently started an open mic night on Wednesdays,” she says. Sometimes, Lauren herself performs for the local crowd.
One of the things DoubleDave’s has always been known for is its buffet. But Covid brought that to an end … at least temporarily. “Our customers were upset that we were not allowed to have the buffet available,” she says. “So Alex and I worked with what we have and turned our counter into a buffet serving area. Our customers were literally begging for it.”
The buffet is available every day for lunch from 11am - 2pm and for dinner on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5pm - 8pm.

A Peek Behind the Masthead of The Fort Bend Independent
UpClose Magazine’s editor, Alisha McMillen, and the managing editor of The Fort Bend Independent, Elsa Malakoff Maxey, recently chatted about what the local newspaper –whose founder and publisher is Seshadri Kumar – is all about. The two publications share some overlap in readers, but each has its own specialty in types of topics covered. Learn more about the woman in charge of the content that is distributed to 20,000 Fort Bend County homes every week.
Question: What is your educational background?
Elsa: I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and a master’s degree (MSW) from the University of Houston.
Question: How long have you been writing about Fort Bend County?
Elsa: I have been contributing articles to many publications in Fort Bend County since 1998, including other multimedia (audio and video) production content.
Question: Who reads The Fort Bend Independent?
Elsa: Primarily people who like to be informed from a trusted, local media source about local news and a variety of featured information to stay informed. These are people who make intentional decisions on where they stand on local issues. They also like to find places and things to do, and talk to others about local area news we cover. These are people who like to feel connected to their neighbors with information that helps improve their lives and their overall communities.
Question: What types of information do you like to share?
Elsa: I enjoy writing about local, state, and national news impacting the community, as well as features and editorial columns, as I feel I am responding to a calling to inform, enlighten, and inspire.
Question: Tell me a little about the community of Fort Bend County.
Elsa: As a 35-year resident of Sugar Land who has seen the area develop, I consider the trailblazing citizens of the Fort Bend community, whom I affectionately call Fort Benders, to be a diverse population in so many ways, representing what I believe is what the rest of the country will eventually look like – a multicultural society with a greater diversification of world origins. We have settled in one of the most well-regarded places, calling it home and working together for a greater good. We share opinions, our knowledge and come up with solutions. This brings on a stronger sense of belonging. That’s who

A Prescription for Ice Cream

Eight-year-old Dahlia Williams was nervous when she arrived for her scheduled teeth extractions at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, the office of Dr. Faisal Khan. “I actually didn’t feel most of the work being done. I just focused on the Minions movie playing on the ceiling above my head,” she says.
Mom Julisa and dad Ryan were also nervous to have two of their daughter's teeth pulled, but the office staff helped keep them calm. “The staff was so kind and everything was done timely and properly,” Julisa says. “I was allowed to be in the room with her. I was given the choice of standing by her head and holding her hand, or at her feet. I opted for the head, even though I was able to see all of the work being done. It was actually kind of neat to see what they did.”
“Dr. Khan has a really good team,” Julisa says. “They take great care of us every time. They told us step-by-step what they were doing and about how long the procedure would take.”
After the extractions were done came the fun part for Dahlia. “She got Dr. Khan’s permission to eat all the ice cream she wanted,” Julisa says.
Dr. Khan is known for his gentle touch and calming attitude. “When Dr. Khan walks in, it’s like his body is just singing,” Dahlia says about Dr. Khan’s demeanor.
Dahlia also loves the Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental office. A budding artist, Dahlia says, “I love all of the murals, especially the forest one.” Julisa adds, “She likes the mini movie theatre and the arcade in the waiting room, although we don’t spend much time waiting because they’re pretty good about getting us in quickly.”
The location is convenient for the family, who lives in Richmond with their four-month-old Yorkie-Terrier, Leo. The walls in their home are peppered with Dahlia’s artwork. A dedicated girl scout, Dahlia even sells the Grand Parkway Pediatric staff cookies every year… “except the peanut butter patties. I try to keep as many of those boxes as I can,” Dahlia whispers.
Having three kids of his own makes founder and owner of Grand Parkway Pediatric, Dr. Faisal Khan, even more understanding of children’s needs. “Kids are my whole life,” he says. “My own kids, Zayna, Hamza, and Eisa, visit the office all the time. They love talking to the employees, and they help out by making goody bags and shredding papers.”
Joining Dr. Khan are Dr. Annie Zheng, Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik, and Dr. Khadija Khan, as well as an oral surgeon and an anesthesiologist. The practice provides all aspects of pediatric dentistry, special needs dentistry, and minor orthodontics.

he slow, steady expansion of women in medical school and medical practice has significantly changed the face of medicine, according to a data analysis by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Women accounted for 38% of active physicians in 2022 (a total of 371,851), an increase from 26% (a total of 188,926) in 2004.
At Capital Internal Medicine Associates, Capital Infectious Disease Associates, and Allure Aesthetics, supervising physicians, brothers Dr. Salman Aly and Dr. Sarfraz Aly, support and trust their medical teams to do what’s right for each patient.

Behind the Scenes in Clean Rooms

“Women are drawn to nurturing and helping people feel good,” says Paula Hooper, PharmD, RPh., Primera Professional Pharmacy’s pharmacist in charge. “The pharmacy industry has become more female-dominated in recent years. My team consists of a committed group of women and men who take their jobs seriously.”
The employees of Primera are all about taking care of the customer. “We have a family culture. Some people don’t have an advocate, so we advocate for them,” Paula says. “If I can’t solve the patient’s problem, I’ll find another source who can.”
A full-service retail and compounding pharmacy, Primera fills all types of prescriptions, but focuses on eye health. The company is a subsidiary of Rosenberg-based OCuSOFT Inc., a research, development, and supply business specializing in eye care.
“Eye drops have different sterile requirements than other prescriptions,” Paula explains. “Our pharmacists and technicians go through specialized training and our compounding rooms have been certified, which requires routine monitoring, and surface and air sampling.”
Primera compounds a special combination drop that cuts down the usage requirements for patients, especially those recovering from cataract and Lasik surgery. “These drops are especially helpful for older patients,” Paula says. “They previously had three bottles of drops that needed to be given at various times of day, which could get very confusing. When appropriate for their treatment, we formulate and combine the medications so they only use one bottle and fewer drops.”
They also frequently compound pre-surgery anesthetic drops that numb the eye for procedures like injections and surgeries.
“We can deliver the prescriptions to the doctor’s office or the patient’s home,” Paula explains.
Watching a pharmacist compound their eye products reminds you of something out of the movies. The pharmacy has both a non-sterile and sterile clean room suite that require different levels of protective clothing, including head to toe sterile gowning and gloves.They are accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) for sterile and non-sterile environments, and are members of the Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA). Their sterile pharmacy completes detailed sterility release testing.
The family vibe at Primera also allows Paula to balance her work and home life, which can be challenging for dedicated parents in the workplace. She has been married to her high school sweetheart for 35 years. The couple has two daughters, two grandchildren and a white lab named Zeeva. “She was a shelter dog that was plucked off the streets right by our pharmacy.”
“I don’t like to cook, but I love compounding medications,” Paula continues. “At a previous position, I filled prescriptions that went to the space station. My kids call me a Space Pharmacist.”
“At the end of the day, we all just take care of our patients, whether in space or on earth,” Paula laughs.

The CEO of Encompass Health Sugar Land, Bindu Varghese, prides herself on maintaining a family-like culture among her employees. “As soon as you walk in, you feel the warmth,” she says. “People say they feel the positive aura of this hospital. It’s just a real family environment.”
Encompass Health is an inpatient rehabilitation hospital specializing in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. “We see stroke patients, amputees, people recovering from hip fractures, people with neurological disorders – anyone who needs us,” Bindu continues.
Bindu has been with Encompass and has been married for 19 years. “2006 was a big year!” she says. “I’ve literally grown up between the walls of Encompass Health. I was just a baby when I started here. I had my two children (ages 15 and 11) during my tenure here. I worked my way up from Occupational Therapy to CEO.”
Within the hospital, they have many women in leadership roles. “We all support each other. We’re going through some of the same things and it builds trust. And we cover for each other,” Bindu explains. “I feel proud to be a woman in this position. I feel proud for little girls who look like me. It’s about working hard and overcoming barriers that women face. It makes me want to share with women that we can do it.”
One of the women who supports Bindu’s efforts is Tracey Griffin, business development director for Encompass Health Sugar Land. She started as a physical therapist at Encompass 15 years ago. She, too, has grown up within the walls of Encompass. She’s been married for 18 years and is raising four children, ages nine through 13.
“The family culture here is huge,” she says. “Most of the women here are moms and everyone realizes we’re all trying to be successful in our careers and within our families. So everyone rallies behind each other. It’s difficult to balance work and home life. The fact that I have healthy, happy kids and am in this demanding business role feels like a huge accomplishment.”
The confidence and compassion exuded by their leader trickles down to the hospital’s employees. “Happy employees equal happy patients,” Bindu states. “Patients talk about how friendly our employees are. Someone once asked me, ‘How do you wire all of your employees to smile all day long?’”
And that trickles down again to the patients. The Sugar Land campus consistently rates in the Top Five Hospitals, out of 150 hospitals in the Encompass family, for employee engagement.
“We give people their lives back,” Tracey says, while Bindu concludes, “A lot of patients enter in a wheelchair, but walk out of here on their own with a smile on their face. Our goal is to get our patients independent enough to go home with their loved ones as soon as possible.”

The Power of Gratitude
It all started with a thank you note. Ginsu Varghese was having her home remodeled. She had some furniture that she no longer needed. “I told my contractor to give it away if she knew someone who could use it,” Ginsu explains. “Weeks later, I received a note from The Sanctuary Foster Care Services, thanking us for the furniture. I went online to learn about the organization, and my husband and I were blown away about its faith-based mission to take care of foster kids.”
“Our mission is to provide permanent sanctuary and healing homes for our foster children,” says Jenny Fridge, who manages Community Development for The Sanctuary’s Fort Bend branch. “The average foster child moves seven times. We want to stop that cycle of movement and help kids find permanence so they can begin to heal and have a real future. We are stepping into foster care in a unique way with 360-degree support.”
“Foster care had never been a part of our lives before,” Ginsu says. “But it was just one of those situations where you can’t look away. There are thousands of kids nobody’s looking out for. It’s just mind-blowing.”
Ginsu attended the ribbon cutting for The Sanctuary’s Fort Bend branch in 2023. Her first contributions were making meals for their family freezer. Every new Sanctuary foster family receives a two week meal train so they can focus on helping the child get acclimated to their new home. It wasn’t long before she and her husband of 25 years were 100% on board. They even hosted an event at their home for more than 60 of their friends. “I come from an immigrant family

in India and I wanted to introduce our Indian community to the great things The Sanctuary is doing,” she explains.
The fact that Ginsu took on this leadership role in spreading the word about The Sanctuary is no surprise – her speciality is leadership training and she has a passion for children. She paused a successful career working in training and development for the government, non-profits, and aerospace organizations like the United Space Alliance to raise her two children because she felt “kids really need Mom or Dad to be present when the big stuff happens.”
She brought all of her experience together –two master's degrees, many years of corporate leadership development, and being a mom – to start Varghese Leadership, where she offers coaching and consulting, organization development, and a youth leadership academy. “You just have to determine where you can be a part of the solution,” Ginsu concludes. “You don’t have to foster a child yourself. Foster families are true angels –they need a lot of support. We can be their village and support.”
A Specialized Approach to Skin Care

“No two facials are the same,” says Christeen Friend, owner of The Essentials Face & Body Spa in Sugar Land. “Treatments must be designed for each individual. Not every treatment is right for everyone.”
Christeen is a master aesthetician and laser specialist who is passionate about meeting the needs of every individual client. “My specialty is treating melanin skin. All skin types do not react the same to certain products and certain services. Skin that is lower on the Fitzpatrick Scale tends to handle chemical peels and lasers better,” Christeen explains, “Skin at a higher level on the Fitzpatrick Scale is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation, due to an overproduction of melanin.”
After 20 years of experience in the aesthetic, beauty, and fitness industries – she was a personal trainer, nutrition specialist, and even a model – Christeen embarked on a journey to enhance her already impressive beauty education and went back to school in aesthetics. She started her spa four years ago in one suite, which later increased to two suites, and is now a full storefront.
Christeen is passionate about providing personalized, results-driven solutions. To help her achieve the best results, she created her own skincare line, Essentials SKIN. “I sat with the chemist because I wanted certain ingredients in my products, like vitamin C, green tea, witch hazel, chamomile, sea salt, and humectants, plus tightening agents and hyaluronic acid, which all slow the aging process,” she says. “My products stand out because they do not contain a lot of chemicals. It’s what’s good for the skin and they work. I personally have sensitive skin and try everything first. If it works for me, I’ll use it on my clients.”
At The Essentials Face & Body Spa, Christeen and her two employees offer customized facials, body scrubs, body contouring, waxing, and an array of other services. She shares her space with a microblading and permanent make-up specialist.
Originally from Boston, Christeen relocated to the Houston area nine years ago to be closer to family. She has one daughter,
one son, and four grandchildren. “We all need peace and enjoyment in each and every day,” Christeen says. “My patients leave happy and relaxed.”
Christeen’s favorite part of each day is the smiles on her patients’ faces. “I look forward to waking up and coming to work every day,” she explains. Making people feel good about themselves makes me feel good.”

Primary Care Practice Grows to Serve its Community

Like Fort Bend county itself, Fulshear Family Medicine’s Sugar Land location is growing by leaps and bounds. “We see all kinds of patients in Sugar Land. It’s important, as physicians, that we cater to everyone,” says owner and clinical director of Fulshear Family Medicine, Dr. Anisha Waxali. “The patient population we have is knowledgeable and they participate in their care. They do a lot of research, they listen, and they follow up when they’re supposed to.”
In the Sugar Land and Fulshear locations, physicians and mid-level providers (PAs and NPs) are available to see patients right away. “No one wants to wait, so we have set aside appointment slots for acute care – for those needing same- or next-day care. The last thing patients want to do is wait. When patients seek health care, they are vulnerable and sometimes frightened, so we have a duty to help them immediately,” she says.
Dr. Waxali established her Sugar Land practice in 2004 when her family relocated to the area to be closer to her parents. “They were very helpful with my young son while I worked toward establishing my practice.” Dr. Waxali has been married to her husband, Eric, for 31 years.
Last year, the Sugar Land practice was renamed after Dr. Waxali’s business purchased Fulshear Family Medicine. By chance, Fulshear Family Medicine has become a hub for successful female practitioners. “We weren’t looking to hire women specifically, it just organically happened. Having a majority of women in our practice is a reflection of how women are leading in medicine today,” says Dr. Waxali. “Our dedicated, hardworking, exemplary women include Dr. Mary Santiago and several mid-level providers. We all have children and families, but are still dedicated to taking care of our patients. We do it all!”
“Our goal is to expand access to primary care in a setting driven by independent physicians,” Dr. Waxali says. “We stress preventive care and focus on lowering the cost of care for our patients.”

Get that Small-Town Pharmacy Feel at Campbell’s Compounding

r. Lisa Mathew of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in Sugar Land has worked with Dr. Lance Campbell for 20 years. “I was a student with him in 2005. After I graduated pharmacy school, I worked in retail for a bit, but came back to Campbell’s in 2007 when Lance launched the Sugar Land location,” she says.
Dr. Rawan Abu-Elheiga, staff pharmacist, is much newer to the pharmacy, but she and Dr. Mathew concur – Campbell’s Compounding is all about family.
“For Lance, family always comes first. He’s always been understanding and accommodating,” Dr. Mathew explains. “Most of us working at Campbell’s have families.”
“In many retail settings, work comes first before anything else,” Dr. Abu-Elheiga adds. “At Campbell’s, there’s a place for family.”
Married in 2008, Dr. Mathew and her husband are raising their two boys, ages nine and 10 in Richmond. “We have deep roots in Richmond with my parents, my in-laws, and my siblings living there,” she says. Dr. Abu-Elheiga has a similar work/home situation with a seven-year-old son and fiveyear-old daughter. She and her husband have been married for 10 years.
Dr. Abu-Elheiga says, “As much as we’re family-centered as a work team, we’re also the same way with customers. We’re there for our customers. It’s kind of a small-town feel where you get individualized and personalized attention.”
Campbell’s Compounding was started in 2003 by Dr. Campbell after he worked for several compounding pharmacies in the Houston area. Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for
the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient,” says Dr. Campbell.
Pharmacy was a traditionally male dominated field but much has changed. “Women have paved the way in this field and have redefined what leadership and excellence look like in healthcare,” Dr. Mathew says.
“Women, in general, have a lot put on us. We’re the moms and caretakers, plus we also have important work responsibilities,” Dr. Abu-Elheiga explains. “It’s important to work with people who share your same philosophies and support one another.”
Dr. Mathew concludes. “At Campbell’s, we all have similar end goals of high patient care and business success. Having the same goals inspires growth.”

Why is EFBHNM a fun and fulfilling place to work, especially for women? What qualities make women especially successful in the nonprofit world? Why is EFBHNM such an important resource for women in Fort Bend County?

Treating Smiles with a Gentle Touch

“Orthodontics requires caring personalities and gentle hands, which is why women are such a good fit in the field,” says Dr. Srishti Mehta, founder of local Indigo Orthodontics. She has been creat ing happy, confident smiles in Fort Bend County since 2007.
Seeing patients in her state-of-the-art, modern building on Grand Parkway, Dr. Mehta and her partner, Dr. Angelica Herrera, have become an important part of their local community.
“This community has been a blessing. I love practicing in this area,” she says. “Before I built this office on Grand Park way, I used to come to the Star bucks across the street to study and watch people. I just loved the vibe of this community.”
Dr. Mehta and her family have
grown deep roots in the community she fell in love with. She and her husband have two daughters, ages 13 and 17. Dr. Herrera and her husband also have two daughters, ages 10 and 11.
“We have a holistic approach to care – we evaluate the patient as a whole, not just focusing on their teeth and smile,” she continues. “My deep passion is for identifying and helping parents navigate jaw growth disorders that can be formed from poor breathing. All of our staff is passionate about this issue.”

“From the very first bite, I knew there was something special about that cake, and I wanted to share that feeling with my community,” says Tuyet Duong, franchise owner of three Fort Bend County Nothing Bundt Cakes stores.
Lucky for us, Tuyet has lived in Fort Bend County for more than 20 years and ours was the community she brought Nothing Bundt Cakes into. “The community supports us and we support them. We enjoy being part of all of their special occasions,” she says.
Uyen Luu Nguyen, operating manager, says, “I started in college as a part-time employee and have now been with the company for more than 12 years. My favorite flavor is Oreo Cookies and Cream. A GOOD WORK/FAMILY Balance
Chhavi Bang and her husband Sandeep both have backgrounds in healthcare, so when the time came for them to start their own business, it’s no surprise they chose something in that field.
“I come from a business family. I grew up watching everyone manage their own companies,” Chhavi says. “So, it wasn’t a question of IF, but WHEN I would start my own business.”
After growing up in India, Chhavi moved to the United States in 2010. She achieved an MBA and found her way to finance. “I was a data financial analyst,” she says. “I spent some of my spare time volunteering for an organization that provided services to adults and children trying to better their lives. I met a lot of older people, many of whom were losing their hearing. I just wanted to help them.”
As soon as Chhavi and Sandeep learned about Hear Again America’s business philosophy, they knew it was the right path for their family business.

“Initially, I worked in the store. I got to meet people and help them. And I saw all of the smiles when their hearing got better,” Chhavi says. She remembers a time when a woman asked if someone could speak Hindi. Chhavi stepped
up with a smile. “The first time she visited, I had to raise my voice because she couldn’t hear me. Later, with her hearing aids in, she asked why I was yelling, even though I was speaking more softly by then.” Chhavi laughs gently. “Many people often don’t realize how gradually their hearing has declined over time.”
Like many women in the business world, Chhavi is always balancing work and home life with her husband and two boys, ages six and eight. “I’m a part of the PTA and it’s very fulfilling. I really like giving to other people,” she says. “I like helping from the background.”

helping her and Sandeep achieve a good work/home balance. The team consists of Sheila, patient care coordinator, and Todd, who helps clients with hearing evaluations, equipment selections and fittings. “We have a great team. We trust them fully, which gives us the flexibility we need to be there for our kids when we need to be,” Chhavi explains. “They have the same desire that we do … to help people in our community.” Hear Again America

One Big, Supportive Family Classic Chevrolet

“Classic Chevrolet has several strong, successful women who have navigated their space in a male-dominated field,” says John Aldridge, Jr., Classic Chevrolet’s general sales manager. “And they fit perfectly within the Classic family culture.”
Melisssa Pitts, parts operations manager, has been with Classic “since day one in 2009,” she says. “I enjoy coming to work every day. I love my job and love the people I work with.”
Starting in the industry 30 years ago was somewhat challenging. “When I was a parts driver in 1995, it was a very maledominated field,” Melissa says. “It’s not all men anymore, which I love. When I call someplace and a woman answers the phone, I still get excited.”
Melissa manages 30 in-town drivers who pick up and deliver parts, and around 20 out-of-town drivers that cover Southeast Texas. “We have a huge inventory of parts on-site, but if we don’t have it, we’ll get it quickly,” she explains.
“Melissa is deeply committed to ensuring every customer is taken care of promptly and she’s a great fit within our Classic culture,” John says.
When Irma Velasquez, a service consultant, started in 2010 at Classic, she was the only female in the department. “For 13 years, I remained the only female,” she explains. “Now, we have three other women service advisors, which is amazing. In the beginning, customers would think I didn’t know as much as the men in this department. I was able to prove myself.”
“We’re like a big family at Classic Chevy,” Irma continues. “It’s great to have friends you can count on at work. We have fun together, but work well together to get the job done. It’s all about teamwork – we help each other out when we need it.”
“Irma is highly dedicated to customer service, focusing on ensuring each customer leaves the dealership completely satisfied. Her compassion and dedication to her job make her an invaluable asset,” John says.
While Melissa and Irma make sure the customers are taken care of, Patty Werner, in human resources, makes sure the employees are taken care of.
“We have 360 employees in Sugar Land and 100 in the West Houston location,” she says. “We’re here to help and support each other. In HR, we support the customerfacing employees. We need to make sure their lives are easy from an administrative standpoint so they can spend all of their time helping customers.”
Patty has been with Classic for 14 years. “In service and sales, we tell our customers to relax and enjoy the difference. We do things the right way for the right reasons. If you have a good attitude and are able to work well with all types of people, you’ll go a long way in this industry. Our industry has plenty of room for growth,” she says.
“Patty makes sure everyone is comfortable, and helps all of the employees with all of their problems, whether workor home-related. She’s a valued asset to Classic Chevy,” says John.

A New Home New Life together

Newlyweds Tibby and Mark have been married just a few months. Both widowed, they were excited to start their life together in a new (to them) home in the heart of Sugar Land. They wanted a space where they could entertain their four adult children and four grandchildren, while also meeting the needs of their own daily lives.
Enter the Re-Modelista, Teri Gilberg. “This is my second remodel with MY ReModelista,” Tibby says. “She does excellent work, and she listens to your ideas and adds her own. She’s cost effective, organized, and reliable. And she’s just a cool person.”
When Teri told the couple that their project, which involved complete gutting of their family room, kitchen and primary bath, would only take six weeks, Mark was skeptical. “He said there was no way. But lo and behold, we finished right about the six-week mark!” Tibby explains. “Her team shows up as scheduled, on time, and ready to work. And her designer is fabulous. I love this group of people!”
The previously separated kitchen was opened up to the family room by knocking down a wall and adding a huge island between the rooms. With hazel painted cabinets and Quartzite countertops in Taj Mahal, the island and coffee bar are two of Tibby’s favorite things resulting from the remodel. “We were going for the ‘dream kitchen,’ a place where we could cook together and enjoy our evenings together,” she says.
The sophisticated update of the old wet bar resulted in a full wine wall enclosed behind glass doors, more hazel cabinets, and a unique countertop in a deep gray with golden streaks. “Mark is more of a beer guy, but he loves the bar and makes sure the wine wall stays stocked,” Tibby laughs.
Not a fan of shopping or redecorating, Tibby took full advantage of the Re-Modelista’s complimentary three hours of design services. “Our designer, Louise Ostrander, saw our vision and helped with every decision,” she says.
The stunning cream and gold countertops from the kitchen were carried into the primary bath room, which has a shower built for two with double rainfall showerheads and wands.
The shower is hidden behind a wall of wooden slats, creating an upscale spa-like environment for the couple. Though the update was just finished in March, Tibby has already hosted one shower for her niece and is planning another one for this month.
