Houston Methodist Primary Care Group physicians say the time is right to begin building a good relationship with a doctor who cares.

L

et’s face it. Nobody likes going to the doctor. But if it’s been more than a year since you’ve had a check-up, it’s time to take charge of your health and see your primary care physician.

“Time goes by fast, and a lot can change in a year, especially as we age,” said Naureen Ahmeduddin, D.O., board-certified family medicine physician with Houston Methodist Primary Care Group at Brooks Street. “We may not always realize how our health is progressing because so many times, there are no outward symptoms until a condition becomes serious. A physical exam every year, along with blood work or other diagnostic tests, is such an important tool because it tells us so much about a patient’s health and well-being. In fact, I would say that developing an ongoing relationship with a primary care physician you trust – and seeing that doctor at least once a year – is absolutely critical to a healthy life.”

2 ~ UPCLOSE ~ February 2021

A primary care physician is typically the first point of contact for patients’ health care needs. Primary care physicians can be internists, family medicine specialists or pediatricians for children and teens. Houston Methodist Primary Care Group physicians have extensive training in helping patients of all ages maintain their health and, if necessary, manage chronic conditions through medication and lifestyle changes. At your annual exam, your Houston Methodist Primary Care Group physician will discuss your overall well-being – both physical and emotional – and make sure that you receive all recommended screenings for your age. “Our goal is to identify and treat any minor problems a patient is experiencing before they become major,” said Asisat Ope, M.D., board-certified family medicine physician with Houston Methodist Primary Care Group at Brooks Street. “Seeing patients regularly makes that much easier. For example, we might notice

www.upclosemagazine.com

that a patient’s blood pressure has been slowly rising over the years, and we can craft a treatment plan to manage that condition and prevent future problems.” Being “too busy” is usually the main reason people give for not seeing their primary care physician at least once a year. But lurking in the background are three major factors that keep people away from the doctor (even when they know they should go):

Reason No. 1: “I’m concerned about COVID-19” As the pandemic carries on, some people worry that visiting the doctor might expose them to the virus. But the doctor’s office is one of the safest places you can be. “Putting off a doctor visit because of the pandemic is a risky move because other health issues haven’t gone away,” said Ali Sawal, D.O., board-certified family medicine physician

primary concern at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group at Brooks Street. “We are going above and beyond to protect our patients, including wearing personal protective equipment and sanitizing our offices throughout the day, as well as ensuring that our patients are able to socially distance from each other throughout their visit.” Houston Methodist Primary Care Group physicians also offer virtual visits. “Patients shouldn’t worry about being in the office, but if they prefer, we’re happy to conduct a virtual visit and at least start a discussion there,” said Sawal. “It’s not really possible to conduct an annual physical that way, but we can diagnose a number of issues virtually or talk through symptoms to determine if an in-person visit is necessary.”

“There is absolutely no health-related issue that is made better or easier by waiting to learn about it,” said Ahmeduddin. “It’s always better to identify an issue early because so many times, we can prevent or at least manage that condition much more effectively when we know about it. A good example is diabetes – if we find that a patient is pre-diabetic, we can create a treatment plan that will prevent serious issues in the future. That’s why annual check-ups are so important.”

We’re here where you need us Houston Methodist Primary Care Group has more than two dozen board-certified physicians providing personalized, compassionate medical

care for individuals of all ages and needs at six locations across Fort Bend County. “All of us share a values-based approach to care, one that is centered on building relationships with our patients and understanding their unique needs,” said Sawal. The result is better experiences for the patient and most importantly, better health. “Your primary care physician plays an important role in helping you lead a happy, healthy life,” said Sustache. “Find someone you feel comfortable with and make a point of going at least once a year. It will give you a feeling of confidence to know that you have someone on your side.”

Reason No. 2: “I’m embarrassed because …” For some patients, going to the doctor is a challenge because they are embarrassed about issues such as gaining weight or smoking. “The weight issue is particularly common these days since people have been so cooped up and many of us have added a few pounds,” said Gilberto Sustache, M.D., board-certified family medicine physician at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group at Brooks Street. “But it’s not something that should stop anyone from having their annual physical. The best way to overcome those feelings is to find a primary care doctor whom you like and trust. When you have a good relationship with a primary care physician, it’s easier to see that your doctor only wants the best for you. Your doctor is your ally … someone who is there to help you.” It’s also common for patients to have what’s commonly referred to as “white coat syndrome,” where just being in the doctor’s office makes them nervous or uncomfortable. “’White coat syndrome’ is a very real thing for some people, especially those that don’t like discussing personal health issues,” said Sustache. “The best way to overcome those feelings is to find a doctor you are comfortable with and make a habit of going in for a visit. Familiarity can help lessen your anxiety.”

Reason No. 3. “I’m afraid of what the doctor may find” The fear of “finding out” about a possible medical condition is very real for some people, but it helps to look at a doctor’s visit in a different way.

his past June, an ulcer developed on Marion Sacco’s ankle. He says, “I’d had one before, so I started doctoring it. But it just got bigger and bigger. My daughter Monica is a therapist at Lavaca Medical Center here in Hallettsville. She started doctoring the ulcer for me. When it didn’t get better, Monica recommended I have Dr. Ulises Baltazar in Sugar Land look at it.” Dr. Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from vein or lymphatic system issues and is a leader in his field. Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a Fellow of the American College of Phlebology and member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. “Since the ulcer was on the outside of my ankle, Dr. Baltazar first thought the issue might be with an artery, not a vein,” continues Marion. “He did an ultrasound, and discovered the artery was fine. The vein was healthy as well. Dr. Baltazar cleaned the wound and wrapped my leg. Two weeks later, he was not happy with how it looked. He advised me that we would need to go in and take a look at my abdomen...see if a vein was blocked there. I do not like going to the hospital, but I appreciated that Dr. Baltazar was getting more aggressive in trying to uncover the problem. He didn’t find anything wrong. A biopsy on the ankle also came back negative, and I do not have diabetes. However, as Dr. Baltazar continued to clean up the wound and remove the dead skin, we noticed it gave room for good skin to grow. Dr. Baltazar started giving my daughter Monica orders on how to care for it here in Hallettsville. She scrubs it and scrapes it, and then wraps my leg accord-

ing to Dr. Baltazar’s instructions. I’ve seen Dr. Baltazar in person during this process, and I like to say he has magic hands. He is very conscious of a patient’s pain level, which is very good for me. The wound is now closing up rather rapidly with my daughter doctoring it per Dr. Baltazar’s orders. I’m very happy with it.” “I do recommend Dr. Baltazar,” continues Marion. “He’s a really good, attentive man, and his bedside manner is amazing. He starts slow and gets aggressive with treatment when necessary. Dr. Baltazar’s office staff makes you feel like family...everyone is sweet, compassionate, and reassuring. To me, that’s very important. Dr. Baltazar really does a great job.”

ou’ve no doubt heard by now that Top Counseling Schools (TCS) named Sugar Land one of the “Happiest Small Towns in America” for 2019. While TCS credits a low crime rate, versatile restaurant scene, and lots of activities, we all know the root of happiness is the company you keep. Whether you’ve lived here all your life or just moved to the area, we are confident the kind and caring people of Fort Bend are a large part of the reason you are here and the reason you stay. And it’s why if you haven’t yet met the Burkhalter family, we’d like to give you a little introduction! For more than 20 years, the Burkhalter family has been answering plumbing questions and fixing plumbing problems for the people of Fort Bend. The company was started by Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. As a small business owner and the father of three boys (all graduates of Elkins High School!),

About You!

Alan doesn’t just understand the values that are important to you. He lives them. Alan says, “When we come out to your home, we never forget that you’re also a neighbor. For this reason, we remain committed to providing expert, licensed service at a fair price.” In two decades, this family-owned business has grown to include two generations of brothers working together. Alan’s brother Chris and his son Luke are also Master Plumbers. Alan’s son Beau is journeymanlicensed and studying for his master plumber license, and his son Jake (recently engaged to Becca Long!) is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. Alan’s wife Jennifer, Luke’s wife Chelsea, and Katie Johnson answer the phones at Alan’s Plumbing. The addition of journeyman-licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Jaime, tradesman-licensed Trevor, and apprentice Christian make this the best plumbing company in Fort Bend.

“We are where we are today because of the relationships built by my dad,” says Luke. “We used to ride these trucks as kids. We learned firsthand from Dad the importance of being polite, professional and prompt while providing excellent service. Today, my brothers and I are all licensed and experienced members of Dad’s team. We take great pride in driving that ‘Alan’s Plumbing’ truck...because we know when our neighbors see that truck, they see a company they can trust. Fort Bend is the heart of our business, and we are thankful to you!”

e’ve been fortunate here in Fort Bend County this past month or so. We haven’t had to think too much about our air conditioners!

Brian Jackson, owner of local Jackson Air and Heat, says, “Our mild to even cold temperatures have been awesome. But it’s an undeniable fact that we have hot days right around the corner. If you feel like your air conditioner barely made it through last summer, now is the perfect time to think about a new system. Why? To begin with, no one wants to be stuck in a house without A/C come July. A broken system during the warmer months is not fun...the heat and humidity are unbearable! The second reason may surprise you: offseason pricing. We can install a brand new, state-of-the-art Trane XV20i variable speed system in your home right now at a price that you will not be able to find come summertime.” Jackson Air and Heat is a Trane TruComfort certified dealer. This designation is only earned by companies that have met Trane’s stringent standards. A certified dealer must show commitment to being the best in every aspect of the

business. Brian says, “We partnered with Trane because they are the best. Trane was the first in the industry to apply variable speed technology to residential air conditioning. What this means is no more sudden starts and stops at full speed. The variable speed compressor knows exactly when to vary the operating speed as the outdoor temperature changes. The result is no more hot spots, and no more high energy bills.” “We are also living in an unprecedented time,” continues Brian. “Now more than ever, clean air is important. Here at Jackson Air and Heat, we offer Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) products for the home, including ultra violet (UV) lights,

media filters, Air Scrubbers, and the CleanEffects whole house filtration system to remove allergens, dust and viruses. All work best with the Trane variable speed systems. These systems run longer at a low speed, which is better for filtration and removing humidity. The net effect is it cleans the air more. I have one in my own home!” To sweeten the deal, 0% financing or instant rebates are available on new Trane systems. Don’t wait for the sweltering heat. Act now. This way when summer rolls around, your family will be cool and comfortable, and breathing clean air to boot! Jackson Air and Heat, Inc. Bring Back Those Loving Feelings R by Becca Bragg

emember when you and that special someone just couldn’t get enough of each other? Now it’s “Sorry, honey, not tonight. And tomorrow isn’t looking any better.” Decreased libido isn’t just a fact of getting older. Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. says, “I like to tell my patients that sexy is more than a state of mind...it’s also a matter of balanced hormones. Aging results in a drop in estrogen and progesterone in women and in testosterone in men. Keeping your hormones in balance can put that spark back in your relationship and turn every day into Valentine’s Day.” Putting the spark back in your relationship may take more than a dozen roses or a special date night. When it comes to

10 ~ UPCLOSE ~ February 2021

decreased libido, aging is an equal opportunity offender. Dr. Campbell explains, “In both men and women, hormones are the force behind your sex drive. It’s a common misconception that only women suffer from a drop in hormones as they go through menopause. Actually, aging results in a drop in progesterone and estrogen in women, as well as testosterone in men. Keeping your hormones in balance is the key to getting your mojo back...whether you’re going through menopause or ‘manopause.’” What’s the secret to feeling sexy at any age? Keeping your hormones in balance. Insufficient levels of progesterone in women can dry up your desire completely. Declining estrogen can lead to vaginal dryness and discomfort. For men, decreased testosterone can put their inner fire out. Dr. Campbell says, “As we learn more about the effects of aging on the body, we realize the importance of keeping your hormones in balance. Maintaining healthy hormone levels affects your weight, your sleeping habits, your energy levels, your mental alertness, your overall health, and your sex drive.” Are you ready to bring back those loving feelings? Dr. Campbell says, “I believe everyone should take control of their health and choose to feel their best. Call or stop by to make an appointment to talk with me any time about hormone balancing.”

uring his final week in office, Rick Miller, Texas Representative for District 26, presented St. Michael’s Elite Hospital with a resolution in recognition of the exceptional care the facility has provided to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. St. Michael’s is a licensed hospital offering COVID-19 diagnostic testing, treatment, inpatient hospitalization, and emergency care with short wait times. They’ve assisted in setting up COVID-19 protocols, and have worked with manufacturers to get help out to our community. St. Michael’s founder, Dr. Shannon Orsak, says, “We ran into many challenges, but we were able to overcome those barriers. St. Michael’s Elite Hospital was able to deliver to our community in a time of unprecedented need. We are eternally grateful to those in our community that stepped up to help us acquire the proper PPE to ensure our staff was protected and did not miss a beat. To date, we have administered approximately 32,000 tests for COVID-19. Our hospital has been able to remain a step ahead throughout this pandemic, and did so with the help of donations from various organizations. We were successful in helping the community without any government assistance. I

commend my team for a job well done.” Rick Miller says, “St. Michael’s is the best. Dr. Orsak is a friend, a big community supporter, and he gets things done. I’m honored to thank Dr. Orsak and St. Michael’s for their service. As the resolution states, St. Michael’s has ‘worked to ensure the continued health and well-being of area residents during a global health crisis, and its physicians and staff are indeed deserving of recognition for their many contributions…’ On a personal level, St. Michael’s has helped me, my wife, and her sister. I can attest to the exceptional care, and they do have short wait times! On behalf of the State of Texas, we wish St. Michael’s continued success.” Rick Miller’s final day as a member of the Texas House of Representatives was January 12. He did not seek reelection. A huge thank you goes out to Rick for his service to our community as well. To request a COVID-19 test at St. Michael’s, visit https://24hrer.com/covid-pre-screen and fill out the form. f you didn’t know that Mrs. Claus lives right here in Fort Bend County, let us be the first to introduce you. Ashley “Mrs. Claus” Spivey is the owner of local Mrs. Claus Cookie Company, where the mission is to spread smiles one cookie at a time! “My husband Clayton and I both love Christmas,” explains Ashley. “And we wanted to own a business; do something for ourselves and build a legacy for our four children. I can bake, and I’m a Christmas freak. Clayton came up with the genius idea to call our company Mrs. Claus Cookie Company. My cookies aren’t just regular cookies. We then serve them in a cup, making these treats easy to share, convenient to carry, and accessible wherever you might need a cookie.” Standard Mrs. Claus Cookie Company flavors include chocolate chip, Ghirardelli brownie, and iced sugar cookie. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Ashley offers seasonal flavors too. “We’ve done red velvet, snickerdoodle, mint chocolate chip, and last summer we offered a to-die-for lemon cookie. For me, the best part is how happy people are biting into these cookies. I often hear, ‘Wow, this is really good!’ That is a magical moment. I would give these cookies away if I could. Making people smile is my passion!” Mrs. Claus Cookie Company’s future includes adding baking supplies, catering, an event venue and more to its offerings. You might call Ashley the modern Mrs. Claus. She’s building an empire, raising a family, and not only does she love to bake...she also loves fast cars. “My dad owned and built muscle cars, and I have a lead foot,” says Ashley. “My first fast car was a Mustang. I’m addicted to them. With four kids, for a while a small car was not feasible. But now that we have teenage drivers, we could get a fun car. This year, Clayton gifted me with a 2021 Red Hot Camaro ZL1. It’s my Christmas, anniversary, birthday, and Valentine’s Day gift wrapped up into one.” The Spiveys purchased Ashley’s new ride from Classic Chevy Sugar Land, locally owned by Jeff and Tiffany Sebastian. “We chose Chevy and the Camaro for its horsepower,” says Ashley. “At the test drive, the salesperson was trying to show me the different Camaro features, but I didn’t care. Honest and Reliable. Excellent Product. by Amy Sharp

hen Linda and Ed Waltman received their new shuffleboard, they realized just how heavy it is. Linda says, “I told Ed that before we put the shuffleboard in the gameroom, I wanted to redo the floors. That carpet was 18 years old!” As a real estate agent, Linda was familiar with local Lone Star Floors. She says, “I knew they had been around a long time, and I knew they were very honest. I once had a client consult with Lone Star Floors on a problematic floor installed by another company. They honestly told my client the problem and didn’t ask for anything in return.” “Since I already knew Lone Star Floors did quality work, I didn’t seek out any other bids,” continues Linda. “We wanted to go with hardwood floors, but also knew the new floors had to match our existing floors. That wasn’t possible, of course. So our experience was kind of like that book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. In the end, we had Lone Star Floors put in engineered hardwood throughout the house (except for the areas where we had tile), and we carpeted the three upstairs bedrooms.” With her new floors complete, Linda says she feels like a little girl at Christmas. “They’re just beautiful... gorgeous. They’re exactly what I’ve always wanted! I do recommend Lone Star Floors, in fact, I have many times to real estate clients. They’re quality people. Honest

and reliable, and they’re product is excellent. All of my clients have loved their work, and they do more than just floors. Lone Star Floors also builds cabinets, puts in countertops, does plumbing, and more. They do it all!” Lone Star Floors was opened more than 25 years ago by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer and Imad Mansour. HONK

If You Love Pete! by Amy Sharp

A

s the sun sets on Congressman Pete Olson’s career representing the 22nd District of Texas, we had a chance to sit down and talk to Pete and his wife Nancy. This candid couple met through a mutual friend back in 1987 in Tyler, TX. Pete confesses, “She was a pretty girl—blonde hair, blue eyes, and tall—but at the time, well, I was busy.” Three years later, Pete had a trip planned to California. “That same friend suggested I pop in and visit Nancy,” explains Pete. “Nancy had moved home to L.A. That visit got the ball rolling.” In 1993, the couple married and settled in Hawaii, where Pete was stationed with the Navy. While in Hawaii, Pete was deployed twice. His second deployment, to the Persion Gulf, came just seven months after the wedding. Pete says, “There was no phone, no texts, and no email. Just regular mail. I once mailed my new wife sand from the desert! But Nancy made good use of her time. She earned her Masters in Public Health from the University of Hawaii. Finally, when my squadron was decommissioned, I thought Nancy and I would be able to enjoy a ‘vacation’ in Hawaii. That didn’t happen. I was home maybe two or three weeks, when I was told to report to Washington D.C.” The year was 1994, and it was the Olson family’s first steps into politics and D.C. Pete would ultimately work on Capitol Hill twice with the Navy: first for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and then for the Office of Legislative Affairs. Then in 1998, Pete’s commitment with the Navy was up. “My dream was to go home and work for NASA,” says Pete. “But we loved D.C., and we had started our family there.” Pete joined Senator Phil Gramm’s staff. He became Senator Gramm’s Deputy Chief of Staff, and then served as Chief of Staff for Senator John Cornyn. In 2007, the Olsons’ life changed again. Several key Republicans approached Pete about throwing his hat in the ring to represent District 22 in Texas. “I grew up in this district,” says Pete. “It was an opportunity to represent the people from home.” The race had 12 twelve candidates. “Senator Gramm gave me the best advice. He told me to always speak from the heart, never just read a speech. And never ask for support. Support is earned, and votes are earned. Senator Gramm also warned me that if they’re not saying something bad about you, you’re doing something wrong!” Nancy chimes in, “We didn’t know what to expect. And let me tell you, ignorance is bliss. It was attack, attack, attack.” As Pete rose to the top of the race, it was Nancy that had what she describes as an “incredible epiphany.” She says, “I loved living in Virginia, but I told Pete I really thought we needed to raise our two kids in Texas. The norm is for most Congressmen and women live in D.C., and only go home occasionally. I felt we needed to get to know the people Pete would represent; understand how we could help them. We moved here in the summer of 2007. It’s the best decision we’ve ever made, and one of the best things to come out of all of this. I get it now...why Pete has always been so committed to Texas. This is home.”

Pete was sworn in to Congress on January 3, 2009. Staying true to representing the people, Pete spent as much time as he could at home during his tenure. Nancy says, “D.C. can be tough and exhausting. This community energized Pete. If he didn’t have a meeting or an event, he was personally recognizing small businesses for being the engines of our economy. Pete got up very early for months on Sunday mornings to buy and lay pavers at the front of a largely forgotten prison cemetery. He did this because he thought it was important for visitors to be able to easily walk to the entrance to read about the memorial’s historic significance. I didn’t learn about this endeavor until years after the project was complete...he thought I would have told him that he was crazy. He was probably right! Pete would travel at all hours of the day to cheer on area sports teams arriving home from a victorious outing. He never fails to call people on their birthdays.

The list goes on and on and on.” The morning after we talked to Pete, he was headed to an area elementary school to hold up a sign reading, “Honk if you love your crossing guard.” It’s something he’s done around the district many times. Pete says, “These crossing guards can’t take off. They’re out there in the heat of the summer and the cold too. A simple honk says we care. It says, ‘We’re here, and we love you.’” In his 12 years in Congress, or 4380 days as Nancy puts it, Pete feels two bills really stand out. First, the bill that ended the ban on exporting crude oil, a ban that had been in effect since 1975. Pete says, “By allowing the export of crude oil, we created American jobs.” And second, the tax bill. “People need to keep their money. Our economy was booming until COVID hit. We had the lowest unemployment rate ever. COVID derailed that, but it is my hope that in the future we continue to improve

www.upclosemagazine.com

through reform.” As the Olsons look forward to the next chapter, they have a few tokens of advice for our new representative in District 22, former Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls. “The hardest part is time management,” says Pete. “But come home as often as you can. Be on the earliest flight here, and the last flight out. You’ll touch an untold number of bills on Capitol Hill. These bills cause change, and what you do affects people’s lives. Make sure you are in touch with your constituents. Listen to them. On a side note, I would also like to remind Troy that he was lucky this year, but my Navy is coming to get his Army next year!” Nancy and Pete will continue to volunteer and work in this community. When you see Pete out and about, give him a high five...a ‘Honk if you love Pete.’ Let him know how much he is appreciated for his work in this place we all call home.

“She’s helped me get my life back on track.” by Amy Sharp

Dr.

Julia Ward, founder and physician at local Balanced Body Functional Medicine, is a leading expert in women’s hormones and health. A mother of five, Dr. Ward became interested in functional medicine when she started looking into bioidentical hormones for herself. Dr. Ward says, “I was at a point in my life where I was feeling very fatigued and run down. I wanted to know what bioidentical hormones were, and how they work...so I attended a conference and signed up for a fellowship with The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.” Today, Dr. Ward has made holistic functional medicine her life’s work. She’s helped not only herself, but hundreds of women feel like themselves again. Maria is one of those women. “Going through menopause is not easy,” says Maria. “Aside from the menstrual cycles disappearing, I just noticed change. Forget about the hot flashes, I experienced low sex drive, irritability, mood swings, hostility...all of that. The only answer my ob-gyn had was to put me back on the pill. I didn’t want that. Then I was referred to Dr. Ward.” “I know it sounds dramatic,” continues Maria, “but when I say Dr. Ward changed my life, I really mean it. She’s very thorough with her evaluations. She does blood work to uncover things that may be lacking. She’s also been very thorough in counseling me as to why I’m feeling the way I’m feeling, and the solutions to these issues. I’ve been with her a year now, and I can honestly tell you that it’s been for the betterment of my life. I feel better, my sex drive is back, and I’m not as irritable. It’s just been a great experience. When I’m in doubt or have questions, Dr. Ward answers them for me. She is very caring and pays attention to my needs. I’ve referred Dr. Ward to several of my friends, and they have all been very satisfied. I would recommend her without hesitation. I consider her a life saver. She’s helped me get my life back on track. I just think she’s the best!” In addition to bioidentical hormones, Balanced Body Functional Medicine offers a full range of anti-aging services, including the SkinPen (microneedling), Botox and fillers, and other aspects of skin care. What to Expect at Your First Meeting with a Financial Advisor

“I

by Marie Page

n my opinion, a good financial advisor will do more listening and less talking during your first meeting,” says Andy Sharp, President and CEO of Altere Financial, LLC. “Our job is to uncover the most pressing financial concerns in your life and then, if hired, provide solutions and recommendations to those issues.” “Most often, people want to discuss investments and when to retire,” continues Andy. “But the reality is, these topics should not even be addressed in the first meeting. Why? Because it’s difficult to address these topics without a deep understanding of your current budget, cash flow statement, balance sheet, and outstanding liabilities. To put

it simple: If cash flow is not positive, then there is nothing to invest. Contributing to a company 401k or IRA can help, but it may not be enough. And if there is positive cash flow, then there are more questions to consider:” • Do you have an emergency fund? Is it proportional to your household income? • What are your potential short term liabilities? These might include items such as a potential lay off, new car purchase, home repairs, or tuition. • How much of your debt carries interest? Is that interest deductible? “Once these questions are addressed,” continues

Andy, “then an advisor can start thinking longer term about your retirement and investment goals. I strongly believe that an advisor should not try to sell you on their investment strategy, firm size, or have a specific product recommendation during the first meeting. This has nothing to do with providing advice, which is why you engaged an advisor in the first place.” So what happens at your first meeting with Altere Financial, LLC? Andy says, “It’s a factfinding mission for both of us. I’ll ask questions around your short-term financial positioning, and I want you to ask questions about my experience with clients in situations similar to yours. I will also discuss fees and compensation. If we both feel comfortable and think it’s a good fit, we can move on to the next step.” Andy has worked as a broker, financial planner, research analyst, product specialist, and financial consultant for a large financial services firm. He started Altere Financial, LLC to provide independent financial planning. “My philosophy is that if anything is still vague after that first meeting, you should either keep asking questions until you understand, or interview another advisor. It’s that simple!” UPCLOSE ~ February 2021 ~ 19

PAWS -itively

It’s by Amy Sharp

Claudine Vass

was born and raised in Hong Kong, where there was very little animal control. “I would see lots of litters just walking down the street as a child,” says Claudine. “My nanny would pick up the kittens and puppies, and give them water and food from our fridge...we did not have manufactured food. Most died because they did not receive proper nutrition. I still remember taking kittens that did survive to the SPCA when I was about 13. One clung to the door of the cage looking at me, but I couldn’t help because my parents were not animal people. I’ve never forgotten that.” College brought Claudine to the United States, and after she graduated, life got busy. Then seven years ago, Claudine found herself drawn to a No Kill conference in Austin. She says, “My husband gave me his hotel points; he told me to go and learn.” And the rest is history. Claudine first co-founded Houston Pets Alive!, and in 2014 she co-founded Fort Bend Pets Alive! At the time, open records showed Fort Bend County was killing 50-60% of the animals it took in across the different municipalities. Claudine says, “Homelessness is not a death sentence. These animals not only needed rescue, they needed advocacy.” Fort Bend Pets Alive! organized adoption events in high traffic areas, invited local shelters to bring animals, and created marketing sensation around the events. At one adoption event in 2017, 26 animals were adopted in 3.5 hours. The organization has also worked with area shelters to make animals available to go home the same day. “We have to invest in every animal,” says Claudine. “Which means spay or neuter and microchip each one so they can be released the day a family visits the shelter. We do encourage everyone to visit. When you adopt an animal from a shelter, you save that life, and you create room at the shelter for another animal off the streets. So you’ve saved two lives.” Fort Bend Pets Alive! also works to prevent animals from entering shelters by offering free microchipping events, promoting TNR of community cats, and supporting area Lost and Found groups.” The two area shelters where Fort Bend Pets Alive! has put in the most effort are now saving 9 out of every 10 animals that pass through. “We’ve had an amazing six years,” beams Claudine. “We are thrilled with the life-saving results in our shelters, and we aren’t stopping here. We’re growing and changing. Fort Bend Pets Alive! is advocating for legislation that codifies this community success into law. Our vision is for Fort Bend County to be the first No Kill county in the region. Thank you to our village for all of your continued support!” 20 ~ UPCLOSE ~ February 2021

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DRS. STEVE HARRIS AND ZACK BRAZZELL, DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

HIS BACK PAIN NO LONGER LIMITS HIS ABILITY TO WORK by Amy Sharp

DR.

Varghese John is a local dentist. He says, “I was experiencing back pain that was limiting my ability to work. I decided to consult with Sugar Land Health Center about the pain after reading a story about them in UpClose magazine.” Sugar Land Health Center was opened by Dr. Steve Harris in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. They offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. Dr. John’s first impression of Dr. Harris was that he tells the truth. Dr. John says, “Dr. Harris told me that he can’t cure this; that my back pain might be generational or due to my profession. Being a dentist, I do not sit properly. I sit in odd positions for long periods of time, and I turn in awkward ways. It has caused damage to my cartilage, joints, and muscles. However, Dr. Harris said he could certainly make my life better. He put together a treatment course for me that included appointments with both Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell. About halfway through the course, I started to find relief. Now that my treatment course is over, I’m much better. My pain is very minimal, and it’s not always there. My pain level used to be between a 4 and a 7. Now I’m usually between 0 and 1...with an occasional 2.” “I do recommend Sugar Land Health Center,” continues Dr. John. “They’re good. They don’t always promise to make you as good as new... they explain the limitations, what to expect, how Dr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell

it will feel, and what it will cost. Then they leave it up to you to decide what to do. There’s no pressure. Everyone in the office is very matter of fact, respectful, and professional. It has worked for me. They have made my life a whole lot better. In addition to my reduction in pain, I can turn my neck more, and my mobility has improved. I’m no longer limited in my ability to work.”
