Treating

Children From The

“In my opinion, personalization of care can be lost at the large institutions,” explains Dr. Mittal. “People should be able to call and talk to their doctor! As a parent, it’s something I look for in my girls’ doctors, and I want the same for my patients. My goal is to provide the type of care I would want for my own children, and to make patients and their families feel as comfortable as possible during the process. That includes being able to speak to me.” “Houston is huge,” continues Dr. Mittal. “While the large institutions have outreach clinics all over the metroplex, most procedures are done in the Medical Center. It’s a prohibitive environment to drive to, and it

ediatric Urologist Dr. Angela Mittal is a lifelong learner. “I’ve always found math and science fun,” says Dr. Mittal. “My dad is a physician, but he only wanted me to go into medicine if it was what I really wanted. I applied to medical school after a lot of soul searching. I attended the University of Mississippi, the hospital where I was born. I thought I would do general surgery. Honestly, I took a urology elective surgical rotation as a third year med student because I had heard it was easy, and I needed the break. I liked it! The Chairman of Urology told me I should consider a residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Coming from a state university, I didn’t think I had a shot at getting in. To my surprise, I was accepted.” During her six-year residency, Dr. Mittal worked four months in pediatric urology as a junior, and six months as a senior. “I love kids, and I loved everything about pediatrics. Everyone tells you the worst part of pediatrics is the parents. They don’t bother me at all! While adults often don’t follow a doctor’s orders (think how many continue smoking despite health issues), every parent does exactly what I tell them. They do whatever is in the child’s best interest, and there’s just something wonderful about that.” Dr. Mittal went on to earn a pediatric fellowship at The University of Miami. In 2016, she moved to Houston with her husband. For four years, Dr. Mittal worked for a large hospital. In 2021, she opened her own practice: Pediatric Urology of Houston. 2 ~ UPCLOSE ~ August 2022

Modern Vascular got Byron

Back on His Feet “With Modern Vascular’s help, I am back in the game.” by Amy Sharp

“I

’ve always kept my body fit,” explains 87-year-old Byron Fackenthall. “I was a puny kid. I couldn’t do a push up until I was 11. But I’ve been an avid jock ever since.” Byron earned three letters his senior year in high school. He went on to serve 22 years in the Air Force. “I constantly try to keep vibrant, alive, and well. I used to run, until I had two knee replacements. When I couldn’t run anymore, I walked. Then it got to where walking wasn’t fun anymore. I had pain in both feet…like pinball lights going on all over my feet and ankles. At first I stayed away from doctors, including vascular specialists. I thought it sounded ridiculous to say my feet hurt all over.”

Finally, Byron scheduled an appointment with Modern Vascular in Houston. “I very seldom like doctors, but my doctor and his entire staff are a real pleasure. He explained to me that the arteries in my legs were a mess. The blood was not making it to my feet and toes.” Byron’s condition is called Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD is a condition where blood flow to the legs, feet, and toes is decreased due to plaque buildup on arterial walls, causing the peripheral arteries to narrow (atherosclerosis). At Modern Vascular in Houston, they utilize minimallyinvasive, image-guided procedures to treat PAD. This treatment revascularizes the arteries below the knee and in the foot, relieving pain and usually preventing amputation. All revascularizations at Modern Vascular are outpatient procedures and take about two hours. Patients go home the same day. “This procedure changed my life,” says Byron. “I’ve always tried to outrun my conditions and get back to living…and I really hit a wall with the pain in my feet. With Modern Vascular’s help, I’m back in the game. They treated both legs, one at a time. I’m back to walking, and I intend to fully walk hard every evening once I take care of a few other health issues.” “Modern Vascular in Houston is the best kept secret in the metroplex that I intend to share with everyone,” continues Byron. “I told my friends that the best thing you can do if you’re over 60 is get your veins and arteries checked. It’s actually a piece of cake, but most people don’t seem to know about it!”

Forty Years, Two Kids, Two Grandkids, And A Move B

SAME Dentist

by Amy Sharp

arbara Guinn has been with Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. since the very beginning. “My husband and Dr. Lomonte were in the Optimist Club together back in the early 80s,” says Barbara. “Our family was young back then–the kids were 10 and 14–so we all went to Dr. Lomonte. He’s just incredible. Dr. Lomonte has a great sense of humor, and we have a lot in common…so we always have a lot to talk about.” In the mid 90s, Barbara learned she has diabetes. She upped her cleanings with Dr. Lomonte to four times a year. In 2003, Barbara’s husband passed away. “Dr. Lomonte was there for me,” explains Barbara. “Three years later, I sold the Quail Valley house and moved. Today, I live near Lake Conroe. I’ve continued to drive to Stafford to see Dr. Lomonte four times a year for my cleanings. For a while, my son and daughter made the drive to see him too, as well as my two grandsons. Back when they were little guys, we were out of town when one fell and injured a front tooth. We were all panicked, so we called Dr. Lomonte. He talked us through it, and when we got home, Dr. Lomonte took care of it.” “My kids and my grandkids grew up with Dr. Lomonte,” says Barbara. “He’s a very close friend and a great dentist. A picture of the grandkids hung in Dr. Lomonte’s office for the longest time. The boys are now in college,

so I recently sent Dr. Lomonte an updated picture! I’ve referred family and friends. I worked at Texas Instruments for 24 years, and the whole time I was there I sent coworkers to Dr. Lomonte. Do I recommend Dr. Lomonte? You bet!”

Why Compound? by Amy Sharp

O

pened by Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph back in 2003, local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy makes medications just for you! “I know some of you have questions about compounding,” says Dr. Campbell. “There are a myriad of reasons why one might want to have their medications custom made. I thought I’d highlight a few of them for you.”

No longer available. This often happens when not enough people are using the drug. It becomes unprofitable to continue mass-producing it. But what about the few people benefiting from the drug? Compounding pharmacists can recreate it! No unwanted ingredients. Commercially manufactured medications commonly contain lactose, preservatives, dyes, gluten, sugar, and a variety of other non-active ingredients. From allergies and intolerance to diets and lifestyle, there are a variety of reasons individuals avoid many of these ingredients. A compounding pharmacist can create a personalized formulation to give you the treatment you need while leaving out the problematic ingredients. Easier to use. A compounding pharmacist can flavor many medications, making them more palatable without losing their effectiveness. These flavored medicines go over well with kids, the elderly, and even pets. Medications can also be compounded in different dosage formats…like an anti-nausea cream that’s rubbed on the inside of the wrist so kids don’t have to keep it down. Correct dosage. Commercially available medicines come in standard dosages. Let’s say you need 15mg of a medication, but it only comes in 10mg and 20mg forms. You’re either over-medicated, under-medicated, or need to split a pill. With compounding, your medication can be made in the exact dosage your body requires. Cost. It is often thought that having something custom-made to meet your needs is very expensive. With compounding, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Many times compounded medications are cheaper than their commercially available alternative. Contact the Campbell’s Compounding staff to inquire about the cost of compounded products. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised! “My team and I take great pride in providing customer service with a family feel,” explains Dr. Campbell. “Our staff loves getting to know you and your family. However, we also realize that life is busy. That’s why we’re committed to getting your prescriptions done quickly. You should not have to wait 45 minutes to get one medication filled. Our family works hard to help your family feel their best. We’d love to help you with your medications. Stop by anytime!”

R

emember the Julia Roberts movie, Erin Brockovich? It’s based on the true story of a cover-up involving contaminated water in a local community, causing devastating illnesses among its residents. That movie (and the incident!) taught us that the water we drink, cook with, and bathe in is a public health issue of the greatest importance. For centuries, humankind has found itself wholly dependent on having access to safe, potable H20. So who bears the responsibility for bringing us safe water in the 21st century? Plumbers, of course! Antibiotics and the polio vaccine have certainly saved lives. But the creation of piping systems for delivering clean water and removing waste from dwellings has saved countless more. Plumbing is a hazardous job. Your knees swell from working in tight crawl spaces, dragging a myriad of tools behind you. You often breathe in toxic fumes, and some of the machinery required can cause serious injury. It takes real courage and a heroic sense of public safety to do this critically vital work. Nobody understands this better than Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter and his three sons, Beau (journeymanlicensed), Luke (Master Plumber), and Jake (plumbing apprentice)...all of whom work for Alan’s Plumbing. “I taught them everything I know about plumbing, transparency in pricing, and professionalism. But I also taught them how to work safely. Double wrenching on pipes and fittings all day can cause all kinds of physical problems. So, yeah, it’s tough work, but it’s truly rewarding. We know exactly what’s at stake when we go on a job: your family’s health and safety and our own. Being a Master Plumber is a lot more involved than unclogging toilets and unstopping drains.” As the nation’s first line of defense in protecting health and sanitation, plumbers are on call holidays and weekends. This requires a huge commitment to the public they serve. “At Alan’s Plumbing, we have a long tradition of customer service,” explains Alan. “Unlike the big chains, we are actual residents of the neighborhoods we serve. We’ve lived in the area for a long time. All three of my boys graduated from Elkins High School.” In addition to Alan’s sons, Alan’s crew includes his brother Chris who is also a Master Plumber, journeyman-licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Jaime, and tradesman-licensed Trevor. With community roots comes a strong sense of accountability to the community at large. When you choose a local, independent plumbing company like Alan’s Plumbing, not only are you getting great service and fair, upfront pricing, you’re also investing in Fort Bend. That’s expert affordable service from a company that lives its values of public safety and dedication. That’s Alan’s Plumbing.

We put in turf around their pool, a putting green, chipping pads, and a circle drive. We also put in the turf at Classic Chevy Sugar Land between the dealership and the Corvette Center.” Helms Landscape Design transforms anything outdoors, including entire backyards, by combining seasonal color, turf and putting green solutions, perennials, landscaping, and

pool remodeling. “If you have an idea, we bring it to life,” says Chris. “And we make sure it ties together and flows with your house and yard. We’ve installed basketball and pickleball courts, pavers, and outdoor pavilions. We’ve demolished pools and replaced them with elegant outdoor living spaces. I’ve been in the business since 2012, and I’ve owned this business since 2015. There is nothing that is not possible.” “Tiffany and Jeff are community driven and support local businesses like me, and I support them,” continues Chris. “That’s how they got some of their money back! I’ve bought two vehicles from them. Last year, I could not find a Chevy Tahoe for my wife. Inventory was very low. Classic Chevy Sugar Land found a 2021 Tahoe Premier and had it shipped down

to me. They made things really easy. It’s no surprise…Classic Chevy Sugar Land has been a GM Dealer of the Year for about 12 years in a row. When I needed another work truck, I got it from Classic Chevy Sugar Land as well. Tiffany, Jeff, and I have a lot of beliefs in common, and we both live and work in the community. For the last few years, we have been referring questions about Medicare Advantage plans to Kaushi Shah with Clutch City Insurance. Kaushi speaks Hindi and Gujarati, as well as English. Community

Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS and her husband, Dr. Amito Chandiwal, are both committed members of our health community. “We both serve the Fort Bend area,” explains Dr. Shilpa. “Amito is an internist at Houston Methodist West. I launched Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry back in 2012 to provide high-quality dental care to children. We believe it’s important to be involved with the children and families in the community where we live.” Like all parents, the couples’ two children, Abhiddyu and Anuvie, keep them busy. Eleven-year-old Abhiddyu is involved in taekwondo and tennis, while seven-year-old Anuvie enjoys gymnastics and piano. “Of course, as the children of a dentist, my kids aren’t allowed to have cavities!” laughs Dr. Shilpa. “But as a mom, I understand how easy it is to lose track of routines in the summer. Kids are staying up late and sleeping in late, and they often miss brushing. Routines are further disturbed by vacations. And let’s not forget the frequent snacking that occurs when kids are home all day and near the fridge. I recommend getting your child’s teeth examined and cleaned by a dentist before the craziness of back to school starts. This way, if treatment is required, they’ll have time to rest. Most insurances allow two cleanings a year. You can do one now, and the second during the winter break…avoiding the stress of missing school. Summer is also a great time to start orthodontic/braces treatment if your child requires it.” Further promoting community outreach, Dr. Shilpa has spent part of her summer providing presentations to preschool children. “My puppet helper, Mr. Dino, and I teach how to brush, healthy habits, the importance of a routine, and healthy snack ideas,” says Dr. Shilpa. “It is so much fun to interact with kids at this age. I can ease their fears, so they are comfortable asking me questions and seeing the dentist. A little education can go a long way in promoting dental health!” Today, Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry has offices in both Sugar Land and Katy. At both locations, the doctors–including Dr. Shilpa, Dr. Cindy Hurd, Dr. Chanica Veranunt,

and Dr. Gail Joiner–offer all types of sedation and hospital dentistry, tongue tie procedures, interceptive orthodontics, white crowns, and more. Schedule your child’s appointment today by visiting www.healthyteethpediatricdentistry.com.

Next Stop... An Emergency Room That Allows For

Quick, Individualized Care

“I

by Amy Sharp

f I had a sick friend or family member that required emergency medical attention, I would advise them to go to St. Michael’s Elite Hospital,” says board-certified emergency medicine doctor, Dr. Katan Patel. Dr. Patel knows a thing or two about emergency rooms. After graduating from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, he did a three year residency in an ER. He’s worked in everything from trauma centers to critical access facilities in rural areas. For the last six years, he worked in emergency medicine in Houston. A little over a year ago, he joined the emergency room staff at St. Michael’s Elite Hospital. “At big, urban hospitals, resources can be limited,” explains Dr. Patel. “Patients often wait two to three hours to be seen. It’s not uncommon to find patients sitting in the hallway or in a chair after they’re seen, and nurses often have 10+ patients assigned to them. As ER physicians, we are often in a bind. We do not have the time to really sit and talk to our patients.” St. Michael’s Elite Hospital is distinctively different. Dr. Patel says, “Here at St. Michael’s, there’s never a wait, and I’m able to provide a more individualized, higher level of care to patients. I always have ample time to speak to patients and their families, and the nurse to patient ratio is extremely good…usually one or two patients per nurse.” “As an emergency room, St. Michael’s Elite Hospital can do CT scans, ultrasounds, extremity MRIs, and more on-site,” continues Dr. Patel. “And when we can’t provide

something, the physicians and staff work hard to find a reasonable solution. We recently had a patient come in after suffering a trauma incident. She had seen an orthopedic, and needed an MRI. After she couldn’t get in at three or four of the large hospitals, she showed up at St. Michael’s. We do not have a traditional MRI machine (just one for extremities). However, one of our nurses called around and found a facility that could do it for her. She called back the next day extremely grateful. In a traditional ER, there’s no way staff would have time to do this. If you’ve ever called a traditional ER back with questions about prescriptions etc. after a visit, the answer is always, ‘Follow up with your family doctor.’ That’s not the case at St. Michael’s. We’re here to help with whatever you need, even after your emergency room visit is over.” Founded by Dr. Shannon Orsak and his brother Brian, St. Michael’s is under the direction of CEO/ CNO Jessica Rivas. For a better alternative to the traditional hospital ER, call St. Michael’s Elite Hospital. Walk-ins are always welcome.

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

A Very ChildCentered Practice

t Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, children are the top priority. Founder Dr. Faisal M. Khan says, “I opened this practice 10 years ago because I believe that going to the dentist should be an enjoyable experience for kids…like a day at the beach.” As a board-certified pediatric dentist and a fellow in special care dentistry, Dr. Khan is well-credentialed to take care of all kids, including those with special needs, dental anxiety, and other unique care requirements. He’s joined by Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik and Dr. Aalia Farukhi. Pediatric dentistry, laser dental procedures, minor orthodontics, and oral surgeries with admitting privileges at Texas Children’s are all in the scope of what this team can do. Dr. Khan is also an active member of Shriners Hospitals cleft palate team. Kids love the playground paradise at this under-the-sea-themed, child-centered practice. Fish, octopus, turtles, and sharks—plus character favorites like Ariel and Sebastian, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and Moana—colorfully adorn the walls. Kids lie on orange and white surfboard examination beds with TV screens overhead for examinations and cleanings. Children that do well during treatment are rewarded with tokens for prizes. There’s even a movie theater and arcade games for kids to enjoy while they wait. Dr. Khan grew up in Detroit. His wife, Sugar Land native Samiha Zakaria, brought him here to Fort Bend County. The couple’s three children, Zayna, Hamza, and Eisa, are part of why everything at his office is kid centric. “I understand the nervousness

kids feel (and sometimes parents!) about going to the dentist. My mission has always been to provide high-quality, professional, and comprehensive pediatric dental services to our little patients in a comfortable atmosphere.” Kids and parents can take a virtual tour of Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental at www.grandparkwaypediatricdental.com. THE MOST ADVANCED DERMATOLOGY CARE AVAILABLE Right Here In Rosenberg by Amy Sharp

R

osenberg Dermatology, our very own satellite location of the highly-esteemed Houston-area Heights Dermatology & Aesthetic Center, is now in its 6th year of bringing the most advanced dermatology care available to this community. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Alpesh Desai is thrilled to welcome board-certified Physician Assistant Vy Ngo to the practice. “I chose dermatology as my career path because I really enjoy the detective-like aspect of medical dermatology.” explains Vy. “I struggled with acne during my teen years. I know what it’s like to not feel confident in your skin. That is why I became very passionate about educating patients and helping patients feel confident in their skin. I had the opportunity to first shadow the provider here at Rosenberg Dermatology in March. Everyone on the team is super supportive, and the patients are really sweet and diverse. After that experience, I was committed to getting this job.”

Skin cancer, acne, psoriasis, eczema, hair loss, hyperpigmentation, and nail fungus are some of the more common dermatologic conditions Vy treats at Rosenberg Dermatology. Biopsies, skin excisions, cryotherapy, intralesional injections, and incision and drainage are also in her list of procedures. Cosmetic dermatology options include neurotoxins, dermal fillers, chemical peels, and microneedling. “I’m very into patient education,” says Vy. “I became a P.A. because there’s so much I can do to help people. Here at Rosenberg Dermatology, our team is committed to caring for our community beyond the walls of the office. We are eager to share our knowledge and experience to keep our patients healthy and confident.” Vy was born and raised in Vietnam, and she speaks Vietnamese fluently. “Fort Bend is my home now,” says Vy. “I love exploring new restaurants with my husband and hiking with my three dogs.” Vy reminds everyone to wear sunscreen that’s SPF 40+ while out in the Texas sun, and to reapply every two to three hours. “Schedule a skin check at least

once a year as well. It is never too early to have your skin exam…especially if you have a family history of skin cancer. Enjoy the rest of your summer!”

The Brain Detective

L

icensed Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist Dr. Joel Levy always wanted to be a scientist. “That changed the first day of my freshman year in college,” says Dr. Levy. “My best friend and I were comparing notes from summer learning experiences. Mine was in astronomy, and he had done psychology. I was fascinated by psychology… why people do what they do.” His fascination continued through grad school. When mass shootings occurred in the 60s, Dr. Levy wanted to understand why. As his education continued, he became more interested in psychological disorders rather than psychological criminal disorders. While earning his PhD in physiological psychology, Dr. Levy studied ways to help astronauts keep their balance in zero gravity in a lab sponsored by NASA. “This was of great interest to me. My mom had lost her sense of balance after an inner ear injury. My PhD was earned by helping little monkeys regain their balance after an injury to the inner ear. I parlayed that into studying how brain function affects people’s thoughts and actions. I became very interested in the relationship between impaired behaviors and sensory mechanisms, and ultimately how different behaviors relate to mental processing.” And for 30 years and counting, Dr. Levy has

served as a brain detective. People with anxiety, thought disorders (like delusions), depression, panic attacks, and more go to him to figure out the pieces of the puzzle and put together a diagnosis. “I’m not a therapist,” explains Dr. Levy. “My interest is in the detective work. I then refer patients to colleagues for therapy, and they take over from there.” Dr. Levy joined the team at Kinghaven Counseling Group in 2011. “Up until that point, Kinghaven was dedicated to helping children, youth, and their families. When I joined, I took on the older people. I evaluate individuals ages 12 to 112. I enjoy Kinghaven, because as a practice that accepts both private insurance and Medicaid, we can see everybody. I find it gratifying to work with people who might not otherwise have access to quality psychological help.” With locations around Houston and Dallas, Kinghaven Counseling Group offers a variety of psychiatric and psychological care programs, including those focused on families, seniors, veterans, substance abuse, and individuals with autism. Today, Dr. Levy is both director of Kinghaven Counseling Group and head of the Psychology department. He does patient evaluations and testing at the Gulfton location as well as virtually.

ugust is an exciting time of the year for both students and parents as it marks the end of summer vacation and the beginning of the new school year. Community Health and Life Center has seen a steady flow of parents coming in with their children to make sure they have all the required vaccines and health screenings before school starts. For the convenience of the community, Dr. Daniel A. Nwachokor is once again hosting Back-to-School clinics every Saturday in August for wellness exams, sports/activity physicals, and vaccinations. Dr. Nwachokor agrees with the CDC recommendation that everyone get a COVID-19 vaccination, including young children. “Parents and caregivers can now get their children ages six months

through five years vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines to better protect them from COVID-19, and everyone ages five and older is eligible for a booster shot. Widespread vaccination is the best tool we have to ensure a safe and healthy school year for all.” It seems like only a few years ago Dr. Nwachokor was walking the halls of Hightower High School (FBISD) as a student in the Medical Science Academy. He has fond memories of participating in athletics and extracurricular clubs. “Balancing sports, HOSA, FBLA, Boy Scouts, and NAACP ACTO-SO taught me the importance of time management. Community Health and Life Center is a mentorship site for FBISD and LCISD seniors pursuing careers in medicine. I am

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DRS. STEVE HARRIS AND ZACK BRAZZELL, DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

SHE CAN STAND UP STRAIGHT AND

NO BACK PAIN

ifty-five-year-old Lara Bonham has been in two near-fatal car accidents. “The first occurred when I was 13. When you’re that age, you just kind of shake things off. The second happened when I was 25. That time, I had my 18-month-old in the car with me. He had two broken legs and required stitches to his face. My focus was on him, not that I could not stand up straight to pick him up.” “I lived with a lot of pain as a result of the accidents,” continues Lara. “Through my work at different cigar stores in the area, I knew Dr. Steve Harris. Dr. Harris recognized my symptoms. He told me I should come see him. Not only could I not stand up straight, I have osteoporosis big time. I finally decided to see what Dr. Harris could do for me. I scheduled a consultation.” Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. Together, they offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. Lara’s x-ray showed her spine was not straight. “Dr. Harris put together a treatment plan, and I stuck with it,” explains Lara. “Chiropractic adjustment, decompression, electrical and laser therapy came together to cause a miracle to happen. I’m not in any pain anymore, and I can stand up straight! Dr. Harris recently x-rayed my spine again. It straightened up ¾ inch. I did not think that was physically possible. It’s just remarkable.” Today, Lara works at Imperial Cigar. “I keep some of Sugar Land Health Center’s business cards at the store. Anytime I meet someone with a hitch in their giddy up, I tell them they need Dr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell
