Srishti Mehta opened Indigo Orthodontics in 2017 in a 2,100 sq ft office with just five clinical chairs. “I am so grateful for how this community has embraced my team and me,” says Dr. Mehta. “We needed more space! We custom built a new office to provide patients the experience we’ve always wanted to provide. It’s nearly triple the square footage with 17 clinical chairs, located just minutes from my previous office.” “I’ve been in practice for nearly two decades,” continues Dr. Mehta. “I designed this space to be efficient, comfortable, and luxurious. I know who spends a lot of time here: mom. The large windows in the waiting area make you feel like you’re outside while enjoying our complimentary water and coffee bar. High ceilings and chandeliers with a touch of gold reflect my personality. The bathrooms are nice, clean, and luxurious…the kind you might find in a spa. The new clinical area includes benches for parents. I want mom (and dad!) to not only be comfortable, but also have the opportunity to be involved in their child’s care.” Indigo Orthodontics is your family’s orthodontist. “We treat adults and children,” says Dr. Mehta. “Every patient has unique smile needs. With our expertise and technology, we are able to show you the best way to achieve your dream smile with precision and efficiency.” Early Intervention

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends all children receive an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. “I feel strongly that children who are experiencing snoring issues, trouble sleeping, or behavioral issues get evaluated as early as age four,” explains Dr. Mehta. “There’s a poorly understood link between behavior, sleep, snoring, and speech. It’s definitely overlooked and often misdiagnosed. Follow your instincts. If your child has behavioral or sleeping issues and crowded baby teeth, schedule a free evaluation. Not every kid needs treatment. Children that don’t require treatment are monitored through our follow-up recall program. I provide the recall program as a courtesy to this community. Your child returns every year for a follow-up evaluation free of charge, providing the best opportunity to intervene at the right time…that’s how much I value early intervention. I also encourage parents to educate themselves on early intervention. There’s lots of information available. You do not

I just love him…he’s like a big Cole 4 years old. teddy bear! He always remembers you and things about you. He wants to know what’s going on in your life. His staff has changed some over the years, but everyone that works at his office is always welcoming. It’s been this way since I was a kid.” Recently, Filecha noticed a shift in her bottom teeth. “I’ve never had braces,” says Filecha. “And I certainly did not want them at this age. Dr. Lomonte talked to me about Invisalign. My treatment plan is only a few months, and I’m in the middle of it right now. I see a big difference already. I love that I’m getting straighter teeth without a complete set of braces. I’m so glad I took Dr. Lomonte’s advice.” Dr. Lomonte has been practicing in his same Stafford office on Murphy Cole and his mother Filecha 2022. It’s a lifetime now that I think about it!” Today, Filecha’s sons, Cole and Coby, and her husband Erik are also patients of Dr. Lomonte. “We just trust him,” says Filecha. “His office provides a family feel, and ever yone always makes sure the boys are comfortable. In all my years, I’ve never had a negative experience. My brother still sees Dr. Lomonte as well. We most certainly recommend him.”

Summer DANGERS

“M

by Amy Sharp

y children participate in Track Houston,” says Dr. Jessica Nelson, emergency room doctor at St. Michael’s Elite Hospital. “At our first summer track meet, 10 kids passed out from heat stress/exhaustion.” Heat cramps, heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are all heat injuries. “Kids at track meets, swim meets, softball games and more are outside all day,” continues Dr. Nelson. “Heat injury symptoms include weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, blurry vision, and confusion. For any of these conditions, get to a shaded area or indoors into the A/C and start evaporative cooling. Spray the victim with cool water, and place ice packs on the neck, in the groin area, and under the armpits. Sit in front of a fan, or manually fan the victim.

You need to get the core body temperature down as quickly as possible. If the individual is confused, seems very sluggish, or is experiencing a mental state change, call 911 while actively cooling. These are signs of heat stroke, and it can be fatal. Eleven years ago, a construction worker came into the ER nauseous, vomiting, dizzy, and confused. We started evaporative cooling, but unfortunately, he had been in the heat too long. He went into organ failure, succumbing to heat stroke.” To prevent heat injuries, stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting clothing, hats, and sunblock, and stay in the shade if possible. “The very young and the very old are at increased risk. Be aware that alcohol, medications that affect blood pressure or heart rate, psychiatric medications, and ‘water pills’ all affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature.”

For heat cramps, provide an electrolyte replacement or supplement. Don’t accidentally leave children (or pets!) in a hot car. Dr. Nelson says, “If it’s 95 degrees outside, a car heats to 120 degrees within an hour. If I’m changing my routine, I put my work bag, lunch bag, or even my keys in the backseat. This way, I’m forced to look in the backseat when I get to my destination.” Finally, be mindful around the water. Ten children per day drown in the United States. “It’s the #1 cause of unintentional injury related death in ages 1-4,” says Dr. Nelson. “Most happen at social events, where each parent thinks the other is watching. This risk is reduced by 88% for children who have had formal swim lessons. Utilize life jackets and have a barrier around pools or bodies of water. Finally, stay vigilant. At my backyard pool, we use the ‘Mardi Gras Method.’ Each parent/child is given matching color beads. If you’re wearing the beads that match the child, you are watching that child, and you cannot drink. Trust me, it happens quickly. I saw a three-year-old die in the ER after stepping off the step of a hot tub, into the deeper middle area. The child had no formal swim lessons, and each parent thought the other was watching. It’s horrible.”

What if you could detect 50+ types of cancer early? by Amy Sharp

D

id you know that around 70% of cancer deaths are caused by cancers not commonly screened for? What if you could find it early enough to make a difference? Local Balanced Body Functional Medicine now offers Galleri, a multi-cancer early detection test that detects more than 50 types of cancer. Balanced Body Functional Medicine founder, Dr. Julia Ward, says, “This test is a simple blood draw that looks for a cancer signal in the blood. If a cancer signal is found, the results can point to where in the body the cancer is coming from with a high accuracy. This information is extremely helpful in guiding your next steps.” “The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, including those age 50 and older,” continues Dr. Ward. “If you have a family history of cancer, this could save your life. However, family history is only one of many risk factors associated with cancer development. These risk factors include eating habits, lifestyle, living or working environments, genetics, and many others. If you’re unsure, schedule a consultation. I would be happy to help in determining whether or not this test is right for you.” The Galleri test is not recommended if you are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment. It is not intended

to replace routine, recommended single cancer screenings, including, breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer screenings. “Galleri complements these screenings for more comprehensive early cancer detection,” explains Dr. Ward. Dr. Ward is an accomplished healthcare provider with 20 years of experience. At Balanced Body Functional Medicine, she treats you with a whole-patient perspective. “I want to resolve your health issues by addressing the underlying causes of disease,” explains Dr. Ward. “Early cancer detection is one of many services we provide. Many health complaints are rooted in hormonal imbalances, inflammatory diets, poor intestinal health, environmental toxicity, and lifestylerelated problems. My team and I help you identify the cause of your health issues, and then we come up with a holistic plan to get you to feeling better. I like to think we have a recipe to fix just about anyone.” The most important cancer is the one that you or your loved one may have. Beating it starts with knowing you have it. Only five cancers have recommended screenings…it is time to look at cancer more broadly. Adding a multi-cancer early detection test can improve your chances of finding cancer early. Schedule your Galleri test with Balanced Body Functional Medicine today.

fter the February 2021 freeze, the shower in Ann and Randy’s master bathroom had a small leak. Ann says, “At the time, it was impossible to get anyone to come out. I read about Teri Gilberg (better known as The Re-Modelista) in UpClose Magazine. The day after I left Teri a message, the leak changed from a trickle to a flood. Teri called me back on a Friday, and I explained that we had an urgent situation. She had a crew here on Monday and went to work on it lickety-split.” Ann and Randy decided to gut the bathroom: all new sinks, cabinets, toilet, pony walls, paint, and hardware. “I think the only thing we didn’t do is repaint the ceiling,” says Ann. “I’m an engineer, so I’m all about function. I’m not good at decorating. Teri’s interior designer, Louise Ostrander, helped pick everything. She made it look nice!” Teri estimated the bathroom remodel would take three weeks. Ann says, “That bathroom had not been touched since the late 70s. They found so many problems. Teri kept texting me and apologizing that it would take extra time. In the end, it was still all done in three weeks.” Impressed with the work and Teri’s fair prices, Ann and Randy added on redoing the master bedroom and remodeling the two upstairs bathrooms. The deck put in by the previous homeowners had plugged up and flooded the house in 2017 during Hurricane Harvey. Ann says, “We spent years looking for a contractor to put in a new deck, but no one would touch it. They didn’t think it could be built with access to drainage and still be in code. I showed it to Teri. She said she could do it by first installing Trex decking, and then cutting holes for drainage. It was a very clever plan that worked perfectly.

We also needed to update the outdoor kitchen: the counter needed to be cut down to proper height, and we needed new granite, tile and a new grill. Teri took on this project as well. We figured we would get everything done that Teri’s crews could handle while they were here.” “The difference between Teri and other general contractors is she was present every single time I had a question,” explains Ann. “If I wanted her to see something, she was at my house within the hour. She’s so patient. When things I worried about were normal, she explained why. Things that weren’t normal, she rectified immediately. The deck stressed me immensely. It was tough to grasp cutting holes after installing new decking, and it was a project no else would take on. Teri remained patient through my questions. She made remodeling a very pleasant experience. I would definitely use her again!”

What Do YOU Know

About Clogged A/C Condensation Lines?

D

id you know that you should call a plumber for an A/C condensation line clog? Luke Burkhalter, Master Plumber at local Alan’s Plumbing, says, “Once A/C condensation leaves your A/C unit, it’s a plumbing issue. Sometimes it even looks like a plumbing issue. A lavatory sink that is slow to drain is a sign…it’s very, very possible it’s not your daughter’s hair! A lavatory sink that starts filling on its own with sandy water can also be a sign of an A/C condensation line clog. In these instances, the clog is located below the sink. Water dripping from your eaves is a sign that a clog is above the sink. When the pan under your A/C unit starts filling with water, you have a clog in the primary A/C drain line.” All of these clogs should be fixed by a licensed plumber. Alan’s Plumbing was founded by Luke’s dad, Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. Luke’s Uncle Chris is also a Master Plumber. Luke’s brother Beau is journeyman-licensed

and studying for his master plumber license, and his brother Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. The Alan’s Plumbing team includes journeyman-licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Jaime, and tradesman-licensed Trevor. Luke’s mom Jennifer and Megan Duncan answer the phones. Luke says, “We can run chemicals and/or cables into your A/C condensation lines to clear them. Or we can use our jetter…it’s the most effective at flushing the line. The jetter leaves your pipes squeaky clean, like a power washer for the drains.”

by Amy Sharp

But don’t wait for your A/C condensation lines to clog to do anything! “These clogs can cause real damage,” explains Luke. “Preventive maintenance is key. We can service your A/C primary lines BEFORE they clog. If you’ve experienced multiple problems in the past, it might be time to bring the jetter out for a thorough cleaning. The jetter is also an effective solution for flushing kitchen pipes that experience frequent stoppages.” As we move into July, your A/C and its condensation lines will be working overtime. Stop a clog before it starts. Schedule an A/C condensation line preventive maintenance service (or any plumbing service!) by calling 281261-1064 today. Alan’s Plumbing

Signs For Borussia Dortmund

r. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. is excited to announce that his 16-year-old son Cole has signed his first professional soccer contract for the German Bundesliga giant, Borussia Dortmund (BVB). Highly recruited by many clubs in Europe–including Bayern Munich, PSV, Benfica, and FC Copenhagen–Cole chose Borussia Dortmund because of their great history of developing young players and seeing them succeed. Cole will follow in the steps of top USA players like Christian Pulisic (sold by BVB and now plays for Chelsea in the English Premier League) and Gio Reyna at Dortmund. He’s a playmaker who enjoys taking people on with dribbling and creating great opportunities for his team. Cole will play 10 for BVB, the central attacking midfielder who plays behind the striker. “Cole has always loved soccer,” says Dr. Campbell. “He’s been kicking a ball since he was 18 months old. He would play soccer with his grandmother when he went over to her house to see her. According to his grandmother, she was his ‘first coach’.” At four years of age, Cole played for Second Baptist Church. He then played for Eclipse right here in Sugar Land. When the family moved to Georgia, Cole was selected to play for the MLS club Atlanta United. The Campbell family currently resides in Iceland, where Cole is playing for Bredablik (his mother Rakel also played for Bredablik!). He has played for the U16 and U17 Icelandic National team, scoring two goals in four games. Cole is the #1 16-yearold player in Iceland, and the first Icelandic player to be bought by the BVB Academy. He is very excited for the chance to follow in the footsteps of Pulisic and Reyna. “Cole looks up to these players,” says Dr. Campbell. “He hopes to play alongside Reyna in the next few years at Dortmund. However, his future with the Icelandic National team could be in jeopardy if the USA comes Proud Parents: Dr. Lance and

He has dual citizenship, and the USA has some amazing players that he would love to play alongside!” Cole’s parents and siblings will make the move from Iceland to Germany with him. “Family has to come first!” says Dr. Campbell. “Rakel and I feel that he is too young to live alone. We want to be with him to help him succeed and keep our family unit together. We couldn’t be prouder of Cole and his hard work. He has always dreamed of playing overseas, and his dream of signing a professional contract has finally come true with an AMAZING club in BVB (Borussia Dortmund).” Dr. Campbell is founder and CEO of our very own local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. on’t let pests ruin your outdoor summer plans! Have local BUGCO Pest Control install and maintain an automated mosquito misting system. BUGCO founder Chris Millward says, “These misting systems provide a daily, quick kill of the mosquitoes around the perimeter of your home and yard.” When you install a mosquito misting system with BUGCO, your system is specifically designed for your home with strategic nozzle installation. Chris says, “The system itself is discrete, meshing with the look of your home and yard. It operates for very brief periods in the middle of the night, when mosquitoes are most active. Our systems use a water-based, biodegradable pyrethrum extract from the chrysanthemum flower to effectively control your mosquito nuisance while being safe for kids and pets. We generally set it to spray two to three times per night, and mosquitoes flying or resting are instantly hit with a lethal dose. A remote control feature allows you to operate the system at your command. If you’re having a BBQ or pool party, just hit ‘Mist Now’ about half an hour before guests

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

Making Little Teeth a Big Deal

W

ellness checks for your child during the first couple years of life are celebratory events. Who hasn’t called the grandparents shortly after a check-up to report on all the details, including weight, height, and how brave your kiddos were for their shots? And why not? What could be more important than the health of our children? Dr. Faisal M. Khan, owner of local Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, says, “I have three children of my own. I know firsthand that NOTHING is more important than the health of your children. It’s only natural to celebrate every one of these milestones. Yet, one aspect of their health seems to fall under the radar: their oral health.” “Many parents see the dentist as a scary place that we only go to when we have a problem,” continues Dr. Khan. “The reality is, establishing routine check-ups with a pediatric dentist by age one is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). By doing so, you’ll establish a ‘Dental Home’ for your child’s oral health. Look at it this way, if we treated going to the dentist more like we treat going to the pediatrician, we could avoid potentially painful problems for our children. Tooth decay is the most common chronic infectious disease among children in the United States. By age five, about 60% of children will have had a cavity. The good news is…tooth decay is nearly 100% avoidable by starting routine visits with a pediatric dentist early.” When you take your kids to Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, don’t be surprised when they’re the ones celebrating after a visit with the dentist. There’s a movie theater and arcade games to enjoy while they wait. Fish, octopus, turtles, and sharks adorn the walls. The surfboard examina-

tion beds are a bright orange and white, and each is complete with a ceiling-mounted TV for your little patient to enjoy while their teeth are examined and cleaned. Dr. Khan says, “Your child’s little teeth are a big deal. The more fun we can make the dental visit, the easier it is for the child, the parents, and the dentist. There’s no need to overlook your child’s oral health. It’s really not scary!”

FROM NECK PAIN LEVEL 8 TO WALKING 52 MILES WITHOUT PAIN

ailey Wallace says, “A while back, I woke up with a crick in my neck…the kind that would not let me move my neck at all to the right side. I also had a buzzing in my right arm 24/7, like electricity was running through it. I thought it would go away, but after three weeks I had to do something. I couldn’t turn my head, and my pain level was about an 8 on a zero to 10 scale. I remembered a friend of mine with neck issues found relief with Dr. Zack Brazzell at Sugar Land Health Center. I finally scheduled an evaluation.” Sugar Land Health Center was opened in 1982 by Dr. Steve Harris. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Brazzell, to the practice. Together, they offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. Bailey’s x-rays revealed that she had a compressed spinal column and the crick in her neck was crushing a nerve, causing the buzzing sensation down her arm. Dr. Brazzell put together a treatment plan that included decompression, laser therapy, and electrical therapy. “The turnaround was amazing,” says Bailey. “Within two weeks, I noticed changes for the better. After three weeks, my neck pain and the buzzing were both gone. The difference is miraculous. The ultimate test was my trip to Washington D.C. with the Dulles High School ROTC cadets. I served as the trip medic and carried a first aid backpack the entire time. We walked 10-12 miles a day; 52 miles in total with that backpack. I expected to have problems in my neck and right arm due to the weight of the backpack. I had no problems and no pain. I’m just blown away!” Dr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell

“I absolutely recommend Sugar Land Health Center,” continues Bailey. “It’s a very professional and family-friendly environment. There’s relaxing music, it smells fresh, and everyone that works there has a smile on their face. Now my husband is going in for nerve damage in his leg. I’m confident they will help him too.” New Patient Special
