Give the Gift

s you ponder what to gift friends and loved ones this holiday season, consider the gift of dance. Dance lessons at Arthur Murray Sugar Land are local and unique...and there’s zero wait or worry that the gift won’t make it in time. April Muller, co-owner of Arthur Murray Sugar Land with her husband Chris, says, “We teach all styles of dance, including country and western, Latin, ballroom, swing, and salsa. These lessons can be done with a partner, but one doesn’t need a partner to learn.” So how does it work? April says, “At the first lesson, we decide what style you (or you and your partner) are interested in. Then we set up personal lessons based on your schedule. You are never in over your head. Each lesson is style and level specific, and with enrollment in personal lessons, all group classes and practice parties are complimentary.” The benefits of dance are endless. It’s uplifting and filled with joy. It’s therapeutic, and it’s a fantastic way to sneak in some exercise. Lessons and practice parties create an outstanding opportunity for adults to create new friendships, and couples to rekindle the romance. “A weekly lesson with your partner is an infinite date night,” says April. At Arthur Murray Sugar Land, Chris and April constantly strive to find different ways to promote dancing and fun. In October, they hosted a Cha-Cha Chili Cook-off and a Ballroom Bake-off. Dancers gathered for a fun parking lot dance party and tasted the goods of the chili and bake-off hopefuls. This month brings the annual Jingle Ball: Students

of Dance

showcase what they’ve learned during the afternoon, and then enjoy a formal, candlelit dinner and gala followed by a professional show put on by the Arthur Murray Sugar Land faculty. In February, April and Chris are taking it to the open sea. “Together with about 50 of our students, we are sailing out of Galveston on a Royal Caribbean ship. We’ve booked ballrooms where we’ll provide our students dance classes each morning. Then we have tables reserved each evening at different venues on the ship for fun and dancing!” Arthur Murray Sugar Land dancers also attend competitions around the United States. April says, “Don’t be intimidated! About 90% of our students had never danced before signing up for lessons... and no one walks in thinking they want to compete. The goal is to learn something new. Then if you love it, compete if you want to. Sometimes the promise of public display of your dancing really fuels the fire and focus. It doesn’t have to be a competition, maybe it’s simply an upcoming wedding or gala that motivates you.” Giving the gift of dance is simple. Gift cards can be purchased by stopping by the studio during business hours, calling or texting 713-899-3606, or emailing arthurmurraysugarland@ gmail.com. Have YOU always wanted to take dance lessons? Gift yourself! Now is the perfect time! ALTERE RESEARCH

Do You Even Need a Financial Advisor? by Amy Sharp

H

ow often have you asked yourself this question: How do you know if your needs warrant the service and cost associated with a financial advisor? Andy Sharp, President and CEO of local Altere Financial, LLC, says, “Engaging an advisor to help you determine if you actually need an advisor is not a good strategy. Budgeting firms like Mint.com allow you to access several tools and calculators free of charge. In my initial conversations with prospects, I always give guidance on where an individual can do all of their financial planning and investments for a reasonably low cost or without incurring excessive fees. If, after the conversation, the person feels it’s more convenient for an advisor to assist with their consolidation and budgeting, they at least have a better idea of the value of service I provide.” If you’ve decided you need an advisor, it’s important to understand how that advisor is compensated. “Many advisors will tell you they can help you address your needs,” continues Andy. “In reality, they may require you to invest or purchase a product through them or their firm first before they provide any advice. This can present a conflict: The quality of advice may be determined by the revenue generated from your account. In my opinion, it may be better to hire an advisor that can provide planning on an hourly or flat-fee basis. The advisor can analyze your current situation, create goals, and recommend strategies to meet those goals. I believe paying for ongoing management or an insurance product should only be initiated after the planning is complete.” But should you pay for ongoing advice? “This is a personal preference,” explains Andy. “Once you have a plan in place, a good advisor can provide access to many solutions through their firm to help see your plan through to the end. They can help with investment allocation and management, provide access to various insurance vehicles, and introduce you to trusted professional contacts to provide other services (like tax filing and drafting of wills and trusts). Ask yourself this: Do you trust yourself to avoid the common pitfalls that many can experience when it comes to managing your own personal wealth and finances? You might also feel you need a trusted professional to work directly with you as your financial situation becomes more complex, such as an increasing tax bracket, increasing income, potential capital gains, etc.” A professional who labels themselves as a financial advisor can provide many services with varying degrees of products, specializations and fees. Deciding if you even need one, and if so, who it should be is critical to realizing your best outcomes. Still unsure? Andy is always happy to answer your questions!

What is a hospitalist? St. Michael’s founder, Dr. Shannon Orsak, says, “A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in providing and managing the care and treatment of hospitalized patients. These doctors take care of people when they’re at their sickest.” “Here at St. Michael’s, we are a small hospital committed to very personalized care,” continues CEO/CNO Jessica Rivas. “If you’re a patient, you’ll spend time with

these doctors. Our hospitalists visit patients twice a day. It’s more face time with the doctor...way more than the big hospital systems can provide.” The six hospitalists providing services at St. Michael’s Elite Hospital have a combined total of 96 years experience in direct patient care. They speak multiple languages, including Hindi, Arabic, Vietnamese and Spanish. These hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, and patients are given a phone number where they can contact their hospitalist directly at any time. Upon release, the hospitalist works seamlessly with the patient’s outpatient care doctor to coordinate care.

or more than 20 years, the Burkhalter family has been answering plumbing questions and fixing plumbing problems for the people of Fort Bend. The company was started by Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. As a small business owner and the father of three boys (all graduates of Elkins High School), Alan doesn’t just understand the values that are important to you. He lives them. Alan says, “When we come out to your home, we never forget that you’re also a neighbor. For this reason, we remain committed to providing expert, licensed service at a fair price.” Alan’s Plumbing is lean and efficient. Being a family-owned and operated company keeps overhead low...and that means your bill isn’t bloated by extra costs. When you call Alan’s Plumbing, you won’t get some random guy knock-

Alan’s son Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license, and his son Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. t’s been more than 10 years since Keeper Lin brought Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant & Bar to Sugar Land. Keeper says, “We very much appreciate the support of our customers, our loyal staff, and the government during the COVID-19 pandemic. Without all three, we would not still be here. I’m proud of my team, and I’m proud of this community.” If you haven’t tried Keeper’s, you’re missing out on food that is of the highest quality at a reasonable price. Each day, Keeper (or his head chef) personally visits the fish suppliers and watches as the fish are cut. Quality control is important, and Keeper selects only the best fish to be served at his restaurant. The Keeper’s staff is well trained. Chef meetings are held daily where the team encourages and appreciates each other. Keeper says, “It’s not necessary that everyone be a hero. But as a team, we are one hero.” You’ll be impressed by everything on the Keeper’s menu. The Supreme King Salmon is king salmon rolled with snow crab topped with truffle oil, black tobiko, and garlic chips. Prefer tuna? Try the Tuna Tower. It’s sashimi grade tuna mixed with sesame oil and chili oil, mixed snow crab, avocado, seaweed salad, tobiko, dynamite sauce, and served with tortilla chips or seaweed paper. Beef lovers can’t get enough of the kitchen’s Beef Tataki...thinly sliced, seared ribeye seasoned with Japanese chili powder served on a bed of purple onion, then topped with green sprouts, scallion, and sesame sauce. Keeper’s offers happy hour prices on food all day, every day. These prices include to-go food orders. Keeper says, “We do not offer third party delivery services, because we do not want to raise our prices by 30% to cover that cost. Affordability is important to me.” Happy hour prices on drinks run from 4-7pm and 9pm-close every weekday, and all day on weekends. Want to celebrate the holidays with Keeper’s? The party room in the back accommodates up to 40 people. Keeper’s

Choose the Family Feast for 8-10 people, the Group Feast for 12-15, or the Ultimate Feast that feeds 15-20 hungry guests. “In this season of giving, I can’t help but continue to reflect on this amazing community,” says Keeper. “My wife Bell and I are so fortunate to be raising Chris, Charles, Charlene, and newborn baby Chloe here. In the spirit of giving back, for 10 weeks and counting we have provided lunch every Wednesday to a different group at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. Our goal is to continue until we feed every department at the hospital, and then we’ll select another first responder for our Wednesday lunch donation. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. A KW Southwest Experience

Joshua Sun and Lisa Yang’s Story

uying a home can be quite a journey, especially for first time homebuyers. Before working with Serena Chu, a Keller Williams Southwest agent, Joshua Sun and Lisa Yang were frustrated with their previous agent who showed properties either beyond budget or not meeting their criteria. One of their friends, who had worked with Serena before, told them about Serena. Joshua says, “He told me that Serena was very professional, and she’s awesome!” Joshua and Lisa then reached out to Serena.” This time, Joshua and Lisa’s experience was completely different. It was much better. “Once we told her what we were looking for, she showed us every house that met our expectations. She was very efficient. We were immediately impressed by Serena’s experience. She has been in real estate for over 20 years. We learned a lot from her! She answered all of our questions, helped us clarify, and kept us informed. She was thorough. She never pushed us. KW Agent She always reminded us that buying a home is not Serena Chu

like buying something from department stores. It could be the most expensive investment, so we need to think it through. When we did make an offer, she gave great advice on how to win in this market. She was so supportive and helpful. The first house we won came back with a lengthy inspection report. Serena spent hours explaining every item, and what it meant to us. There were a lot of issues. We walked away from that. Serena knew that we were very concerned about the future maintenance. She reminded us that it’s OK. We would find our house. When we bought our current home in May, the process was smooth. We trusted Serena. We love our home. It exceeds our expectations.” Months later, Serena has stayed in contact. “As the seasons change,” says Joshua, “she gives me some tips for maintenance. When we need service providers, she provides names of trusted vendors. She has been helpful. Her post transaction service is very impressive. I definitely recommend Serena to others. She is the best agent I’ve ever met!”

Together, We Make A Family by Amy Sharp

here are benefits to being close to the people you work with. A close-knit work environment fulfills a basic human need to belong. Equally as important, a business’s success hinges on its people working together. When employees are happy, clients feel that positive vibe. They feel welcomed...like family. This is how it feels to walk into the office of local dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte. “Lynn, Kaelan, Lori, Linda and Amber are my work family,” explains Dr. Lomonte. “We’re all happy to be here, and we all do everything possible to make each of your visits a pleasant experience. We want to know who you are, where you’re from, and what makes you tick. We promise to treat you like family.” This family truly cares about your dental health. Since Dr. Lomonte has been at his same office on Murphy Road for more than 35 years, his overhead costs are low. This means he can offer high-tech solutions at reasonable rates. “My staff and I take every patient’s comfort level into account, even if that patient hasn’t sat in a dental chair for 20 years. What’s great about working with new patients, especially ones who haven’t seen a dentist in quite a while, is showing them how stress-free modern dental care can be. No matter the procedure—whether you’re getting a root canal, some fantastic new advances in straightening like Invisalign, or even a cosmetic service like porcelain veneers—it’s virtually painless. When there’s nothing to stress out about, you can actually relax and maybe even have fun...because we’re always having fun at this office.” Dr. Lomonte would like to extend a warm welcome to you. “Your smile is our num-

ack in 1982, Brian Jackson’s late father, Johnny Jackson, started a company called Jumpin’ Johnny’s. Brian says, “Back then, Dad mostly worked with real estate agents. After a home inspection, he would fix whatever needed to be fixed, including the A/C. His business grew by word of mouth. People trusted him. I worked with him on weekends, and after graduation I started working with him full time. It was just the two of us. Then around 1986, we rebranded to Jackson Air and Heat, exclusively working on A/C and heating systems.” In 2003, Johnny retired and Brian took over the company from his dad. Johnny continued to play a prominent role until his untimely death in 2018. Today, both of Brian’s sons, Brian and Blake, are part of the team. All these years later, Jackson Air and Heat continues to enjoy an unprecedented reputation for honesty and outstanding customer service. Brian says, “We are real people behind a business, and we will be held accountable for our products and

services. Putting our family name on it means something to me. The boys and I have a sense of pride in our work and living up to what my dad started. Over 80% of our new customers are still referrals from satisfied neighbors, friends and family. We love that!” Of course, a good business plan is filled with great decisions and partnerships. Jackson Air and Heat is the oldest independent Trane dealer in Sugar Land. Brian says, “We partnered with Trane because they are the best systems on the market. They’re made right here in Tyler, TX. Trane was the first in the industry to apply variable speed technology to residential air conditioning. This means no more sudden starts and stops at full speed. The variable speed compressor knows exactly when to vary the operating speed as the outdoor temperature changes. The result is no more hot spots, and no more high energy bills. Right now, we are offering off-season pricing. Zero percent financing or instant rebates are also available. If your system is struggling, it’s a great time to consider an upgrade.”

This family-owned and operated business is EPA and NATE certified and an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau. Jackson Air and Heat has won the BBB’s Award of Excellence for the last 10 years. “Your complete satisfaction means everything to us. Let us know what we can do for you!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DRS. STEVE HARRIS AND ZACK BRAZZELL, DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

WOKE UP CRYING WITH PAIN

ammy and Ralph Donovan own two local Auto Check locations— First Colony and Bear Creek. Tammy says, “I was having a lot of trouble with my neck. I couldn’t turn it when I was watching TV, or when Ralph would say something to me. Our shop service manager, Sandy, told me one of our clients was a chiropractor: Dr. Zack Brazzell at Sugar Land Health Center. She thought he could help me.” Ironically, Ralph had previously sent Tammy a picture of Sugar Land Health Center’s sign when he dined at a nearby restaurant. But Tammy describes herself as stubborn. “For a long time, I did nothing,” says Tammy. Then one night, Tammy woke up crying at 1am. She says, “I had severe spasms in my neck. I thought, ‘Ok. Dr. Brazzell’s name has been sent to me in two different ways...so I finally scheduled a consult at Sugar Land Health Center.” Sugar Land Health Center was opened in 1982 by Dr. Steve Harris. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Brazzell, to the practice. Together, they offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. Tammy’s x-rays revealed the source of her pain. She had a disc that was becoming compressed, and she had issues in her lower back as well. Tammy says, “Dr. Brazzell talked extensively with Ralph and I about how he could help me, and what procedures Sugar Land Health Center had to offer. He set up a treatment plan for me that included adjustments, decompression, electrical, and laser therapies. Dr. Brazzell also provided lifestyle recommendations. I was stubborn at first (surprise!), and set myself back by spending five hours on the riding lawn mower. After that, I followed all of Dr. Brazzell’s recommendations. He highly recommended I do a lot of walking, and he also focused on health and diet. With every suggestion, I felt improvement...and I lost weight in the process! I now sleep better, and I have really good range of motion. When Ralph talks, I can look at him!” “When I started at Sugar Land Health Center, my pain level was a 9,” explains Tammy. “My neck was hurting and spasming, and I was in tears. Last Tuesday, my pain level was a 2. My x-rays showed incredible improvement. I absolutely

recommend Sugar Land Health Center to anyone. The entire staff is genuine and sincere. They look out for what’s best for you, and the doctors really know what they’re talking about!”

t’s been more than 40 years since Dr. Steve Harris graduated from chiropractic school and then married the love of his life, Lee, within a few days. The couple’s daughter, Sophie, says, “Dad and Mom moved to Sugar Land in 1982...back when it was farmland and full of possibilities. Their dream was to serve their community through chiropractic and humanitarian work. Dad opened Sugar Land Health Center that same year. We were the original tenants in our current office space. It has served as our home away from home until now.” Today, Sugar Land Health Center has grown to two doctors and three staff members. Sophie says, “I joined the practice in 2016 to assist with marketing and management. My husband Dr. Zack Brazzell joined the practice as the associate doctor in 2019. This move is an answer to prayer! We all have a passion for health and leaving people and our surroundings better than we found them. Our vision of what this practice can be is beginning to unfold. The new facility is 1,000 sq ft larger to house more patients and minimize wait time. We have designed the floor plan to benefit patient flow and make our environment feel safe and inviting... like a breath of fresh air. We specialize in disc problems, sciatica, peripheral neuropathy, joint pain and restrictions, pre-post surgical cases, headaches, personal injury, plantar fasciitis, and weight loss. We have added some new machines and services, including spinal disc decompression, hot laser therapy, pressure wave therapy, and chiropractic modalities along with yoga/chair yoga and a designated spinal rehabilitation floor. My mom Lee has taught yoga for 15 years. She will be bringing the benefits of yoga-style exercise to our patients!” The new clinic is located at the intersection of Hwy 90A and Hwy 6 next to Cornelius Nursery and across from the Sugar Land airport. “We are Sugar Land natives and take pride in seeing our city thrive, “ says Sophie. “A gallery wall in the new clinic will feature art made by local artists. We look forward to our Soft Opening for current patients in December. Our Grand Opening to the public will happen in the new year. We would love to get to know you and hope you will come visit us. If you or someone you know is in pain, we are here to help.”

Andrew says, “This is about helping people, and giving back to the community that I’ve always called home. The Medicare enrollment period is open right now, and it closes on December 7th.” Why is it necessary to review your plan? Because the wrong plan could be VERY costly to you and your family. “Original Medicare has NO out of pocket maximum,” explains Andrew. “Any hospital stay has a deductible. Medical visits and outpatient procedures also have a deductible, and the patient is responsible for 20%...with no ceiling. It’s easy to see how a hospital stay could be very costly! But it

doesn’t have to be. Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement are secondary insurances that can alleviate these potential costs. The bottom line is: If you get sick or something catastrophic happens, you will be paying outlandish amounts if you only have what is called original or traditional Medicare.” Andrew was born and raised here in Sugar Land. He is a graduate of Clements High School and The University of Texas. He says, “My parents immigrated from Taiwan in the mid 70s. They both graduated from Texas A&M. DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

Your Family’s Dental Home by Amy Sharp

T

he pediatric dentists at local Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental believe in providing the very best dental care for your children. Founder Dr. Faisal M. Khan says, “We strive to become your family’s dental home.” Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental caters to kids of all ages.“We welcome all children,” continues Dr. Khan, “including those that are medically compromised or face special challenges. My staff understands that some kids are sensitive to touch, new people, or a change of environment or routine. Tell us about your child’s limitations, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them. We can do simple things like ensure your child is seen by the same dental hygienist, who will wear the same outfit as their prior visit, while also treating the child in the same room and chair. We can accommodate most of our special needs patients in our office. Depending on the situation, we have mild sedation options available. For kids with needs that just can’t be met in a dental chair, we do offer hospital dentistry. Sometimes it’s the most compassionate approach for children who struggle with medical or emotional challenges.” At Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, Dr. Khan is joined by Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik, Dr. Aalia Farukhi, Dr. Brent Kanar, and Dr. Samer Dar. Pediatric dentistry, laser dental procedures, minor orthodontics, and oral surgeries with admitting privileges at Texas Children’s are all in the scope of what this team can do. These experts are surrounded by an extremely kid-friendly office. Fish, octopus, turtles, and sharks—plus character favorites like Ariel and Sebastian, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and Moana—adorn the walls.

ohn Onofrey and Chris Millward met 15 years ago in a pool league. John says, “I was the team captain, and we needed another player. Chris was the winner. He’s about as good as me. Ok, definitely better!” As it turned out, the two had a lot in common. John is a Marine, and Chris’s entire family is military. At the time, John owned a home inspection company. He was hearing a repeat request from customers: Why couldn’t he provide pest control too? Coincidentally, Chris had experience working for a big box pest control company. Chris says, “I despised working there. It was all about making the sale, whether the customer actually needed the service or not.” BUGCO Pest Control’s humble beginnings were set into motion. The two launched a pest control company from John’s garage. “From the get-go, we’ve run this business like the military,”

explains John. “The basic tenets we operate on are duty, honor, commitment and chain of command. We’ve pushed these tenets down to our troops with amazing results. We provide honest pest control at honest prices.” More than a decade later, BUGCO Pest Control has grown to more than 40 employees, 29 trucks, and expanded from here to Galveston to Austin to Corpus Christi to San Antonio and up to the Dallas Metroplex. Treatment options include general pest control, mosquito control, roaches, termites, fire ants, bed bugs, fleas, ticks, and rodents both commercially and residentially. BUGCO Pest Control is certified as a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business. This homegrown company takes pride in its thousands of five-star

customer reviews and its efficient, nononsense business model. Chris says, “We never enter into a contract with our customers. We create service agreements. This agreement outlines the services we agreed upon and our pricing. There are no hidden or surprise fees. If at any point you have questions, you can give us a call or access your account through our online customer portal. Most importantly, you are free to cancel the service agreement at any time without penalty.” John and Chris, both local guys, continue to march on as business partners and friends. “John is my mentor and my family,” says Chris. “My daughter considers John and his wife her grandparents.” Want to know more? Give BUGCO Pest Control a call. “We provide solutions to your problems,” says John. “What can we do for you?”

hen Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph. opened Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy back in 2003, he had a singular goal in mind: His pharmacy would pride itself on customer service with a family feel. Dr. Campbell says, “Waiting 45 minutes for a prescription is just not right. My pharmacy family works hard, so that your family can feel their best.” As a compounding pharmacy, the pharmacists at Campbell’s take pride in their ability to think outside the box to help customers deal with even the MOST difficult problems. “You don’t have to be alone in your battle with an illness,” explains Dr. Campbell. “My youngest daughter, Claire, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of six. Claire used to cry and fight us every time we needed to change her insulin pump due to the needle involved. There is nothing worse than watching your baby cry because she is scared of something that is necessary for her survival. Her access point has to be changed every three days, and it was a constant battle...until we started using a compounded BLT (Benzocaine/Lidocaine/Tetracaine) cream to rub on her skin before placing the pump. Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy This customized medication has been a game changer for her!” “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” The possibilities are endless when it comes to customized medicines. “We can make medications without the fillers you might be trying to avoid (dyes, gluten, etc.),” continues Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 Dr. Campbell. “Medicines can be formulated to follow your dietary restrictions. The Finest Palate of Pakistan

F

by Amy Sharp

ounded by Aziz Noorani, Chef Faisel Ahmad, and Aftab Bawani, Lasbela Restaurant reflects the finest standards of Pakistan. The atmosphere, the interior, the food and even the dinnerware are contemporary while reminiscing all the way back to the fabulous palaces of the Mughal Dynasty. “This is an experience,” explains Aziz. “It’s a celebration of Pakistani culture, tradition, religion, music, art, architecture, and history through our cuisine.” “There’s a common misconception that Pakistani food is similar to Indian,” continues Aziz. “It’s not. Our cuisine is prepared according to the values and guidelines of halal. There’s nothing complicated about halal, it merely refers to the humane slaughtering of the animals...resulting in superior taste. We prepare a variety of proteins, including lamb, goat, chicken, beef, and seafood (both fin and shellfish). Aromatic herbs and spices give the food a very rich flavor.” Chef Faisel says, “The base of our food is 400 years of Mughal history. I’ve fused that base with local flavors using a variety of cooking techniques. There’s something on the menu that everyone can identify with and relate to.” Selections include appetizers, soups, salads, barbecue entrees, grilled entrees, currys, rice items, desserts, and both traditional and trendy drinks. All food is always fresh, never frozen.

Lasbela is currently the only Pakistani white tablecloth fine dining restaurant in the United States. Aziz studied at the Culinary Institute of America. He earned a Master’s Degree in Hospitality and Marketing and has more than 25 years experience in the industry. “I searched the United States for the perfect place to open my vision. I selected Sugar Land for its diversity and opportunity.” Launched just over a year ago, Lasbela boasts a 4.9 star rating on Google with nearly 1,500 reviews. The wallof-fame at the entrance is peppered with local, national and international celebrities. This is a happy, happening place with something going on every month: live jazz, standup comedy, karaoke, and holiday celebrations. “We celebrate traditional holidays and local holidays,” says Aziz. “Check our website, Facebook or Instagram for upcoming events.” Loyalty cards and Lasbela Club memberships are on the horizon and will include access to a variety of privileges. Dining is open for both lunch and dinner. Lasbela offers to-go, delivery, and catering tray options. For special events, Lasbela can host up to 60 people in its private room, and up to 250 people in the banquet room. Catering is also available, including outdoor “live” backyard catering that’s “barbecue to plate.” “We wanted to bring something different to this community, the community my family and I call home,” says Aziz. “When you stop in, ask for me. I can’t wait to meet you!”

The Goal is to Forget About Your Eyes! by Amy Sharp

F

orty-eight percent of adults experience dry eye disease. Dr. Faheem Inayatali, founder of local Dry Eye & Specialty Center, says, “Eighty-six percent of these cases are due to meibomian gland dysfunction. These glands—which are supposed to secrete healthy oils to keep your eyes lubricated—often become inflamed and damaged. When they stop working, you start feeling it. Symptoms include grittiness, itching, burning, redness, and watery eyes. Many people suffer for years. They do nothing about it, and it often progresses!” It’s time to stop suffering. At Dry Eye and Specialty Center, Dr. Faheem treats the root cause of your dry eye, not just the symptoms. “Bacteria, or chronic blepharitis, is the most common culprit,” explains Dr. Faheem. “It’s similar to the biofilm that builds up on your teeth. The blepharitis is blocking the oil gland, not allowing it to secrete healthy oils. We treat this condition with a special medical device called Blephex. It’s an in-office deep cleanse with medication. Blephex is the most rapid and effective way to kill bacteria and demodex (mites and eggs that live in the eyelid margins). After the lids are cleansed, we then offer the Lipiflow treatment to eligible candidates. This treatment is considered the standard of care. It sends heat pulses to the clogged glands through the eyelids and essentially flushes out all of the congestion, allowing the body to produce healthy oils.”

Candidates for Blephex and Lipiflow include individuals with frequent itching, daily eye makeup, eyelash extensions, contact lens wearers, patients with frequent styes or lumps and bumps, pink eyes, or red eyes. One session can offer significant relief lasting from one to two years. The procedure is painless, with little to no side effects. It takes about 15-20 minutes. The full effect can be seen within one to two weeks depending on the severity of disease. Dry Eye and Specialty Center is considered a world leader in the dry eye field. “We stay on the cuttingedge of technology,” says Dr. Faheem. “Here, a patient’s progress is always tracked and measured over time. We want to make sure you’re getting better. You should never think of your eyes as a nuisance. The goal is to forget about your eyes...forget there ever was an issue. We can make that happen!” Dry Eye & Specialty Center 281-779-8818 13440 University Blvd #130 Sugar Land, Texas 77479 www.dryeyespecialty.com

YOUR Gently Used Furniture

Look Around Your House. You Never Know What You’ll Find That Can Feed The Hungry, Clothe The Naked, And House The Homeless Right Here In Fort Bend.

E

ast Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry (EFBHNM) serves the basic human needs of families in our community in temporary financial crisis. Programs include a food pantry, a financial assistance program, and Tri-City Churches Resale Shop. One hundred percent of the Tri-City Churches Resale Shop proceeds benefit EFBHNM. As we enter the New Year—and you begin the decluttering process—consider donating to the resale shop. Your donation will directly benefit families in need right here in our community. Donations of clothing, household items, and furniture are all welcome. The resale shop will even come to your home to pick up furniture. “We are looking for gently used items that are good for resale,” explains Jackie Martinez, Tri-City Churches Resale Shop Manager.

WE WILL PICK IT UP!

“Please be mindful that we are a nonprofit. When we receive items that we cannot sell (and need to dispose of), we incur a cost. Our goal here is simple...to feed as many people as we can through the EFBHNM food pantry. The very best way to do that is to keep costs lean. If you are unsure about a donation, give us a call. We can talk you through it. Together, we’ll decide the best course of action for your donation.” Consider Tri-City Churches Resale Shop when you donate, and also consider it when you shop! “We see some great pieces come through here,” says Jackie. “We recently had a fun tiki furniture set and some mid-century chairs. Antiquers and upcyclers can find it all here! We do offer delivery to your garage or porch for a very low delivery rate.” Over the past three decades, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry has distributed more than $13 million dollars worth of food and $3 million in financial assistance right here in our community. Supporting Tri-City Churches Resale Shop supports this endeavor. Receivers are available to help unload clothing and household donations on the side of the building during business hours. Furniture pickups can be scheduled by private messaging Tri-City Churches Resale Shop on Facebook or calling 281-499-8833. Pickup times are Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm. Jackie says, “We work with you on your schedule, and same day pickup is often available. If we’re doing a furniture pickup at your home, we can also pick up your clothing and household items at the same time.” Tax receipts are provided for all donations.
