HEALTH MATTERS WITH DRS. STEVE HARRIS AND ZACK BRAZZELL, DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

I

THE BEST FOR PAIN by Amy Sharp

t’s been more than 20 years since Bernadine Woodard first saw Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center. “I’ve had back issues since childhood,” says Bernadine. “All those years ago, I saw Dr. Harris for both my back, and two whiplash incidents caused by auto accidents. His treatment helped so much back then, and x-rays showed that my back was straight. But without maintenance, it didn’t stay. Because of where I was living, I tried seeing other chiropractors, but I wasn’t satisfied with any of them.” Bernadine has a small area of arthritis between her shoulder blades. “If I sleep wrong, or it flares up,” explains Bernadine, “it’s a great issue. Walking is painful, I can’t lift things, and it’s difficult to drive. My doctor prescribed a muscle relaxant, and I could take only one Tylenol every six hours due to some kidney issues. When it happened several weeks back, I stopped trying to take it. I decided to make the drive to Sugar Land to see Dr. Harris.” Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. They offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. “At my first appointment this go-round, I saw Dr. Brazzell,” says Bernadine. “What I really like is that Dr. Brazzell explained every detail first. I very much appreciate that since that wasn’t my experience with doctors in the past. Both Dr. Brazzell and Dr. Harris explain what they are doing, every step of the way. I’m near the end of my treatment plan, and I have zero pain in my back. I haven’t taken my muscle relaxant or a Tylenol in a couple of weeks! I also have stress-induced vertigo and an arthritic right knee that sometimes goes out from under me. For my neck, Drs. Harris and Brazzell have

used electrical impulse and laser therapies to relax the muscles, reducing my vertigo. For my knee, I’ve been taking an inflammation liquid that they recommended. I’ve had no issues with my knee since.” “I do recommend Sugar Land Health Center. Both Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell are very gentle; I consider them the best in the area. I’ve heard that other chiropractors ask Dr. Harris to teach them his methods! Next time I see my medical doctor, I plan to tell her that if she has patients in pain, Sugar Land Health Center is the place to go!”

Interventional Radiology Provides Minimally-Invasive Solutions Numbness, cramps, weakness, foot wounds, discoloration, and cold feet: They’re all warning signs of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD is a condition where blood flow to the legs, feet, and toes is decreased due to plaque buildup on arterial walls, causing the peripheral arteries to narrow (atherosclerosis). Dr. Zagum Bhatti, Vascular Interventional Radiologist at Modern Vascular of Houston, says, “The largest risk factor for PAD is diabetes. But smokers and those with high blood pressure or high cholesterol are also at risk.” At Modern Vascular of Houston, Dr. Bhatti and his team are committed to aggressive treatments for PAD using minimally-invasive, image-guided procedures. “For best results, it is critical to revascularize the arteries below the knee and in the foot,” says Dr. Bhatti. “Here at Modern Vascular, we have the resources to accomplish this. We perform below the ankle revascularization. This relieves rest pain, heals foot ulcers, and usually can prevent amputation. Patients can move again, and they feel better.”

All revascularizations at Modern Vascular are outpatient procedures and take about two hours. Patients go home the same day. In addition to treating PAD through interventional radiology, Dr. Bhatti recently began seeing patients for osteoarthritic knee pain and uterine fibroids. Both are conditions that also can be effectively treated using Modern Vascular’s minimally-invasive procedures. “I find this field fascinating,” says Dr. Bhatti, “We can reach any part of the body through a pinhole in the skin to treat an array of disorders. Disease treatments that once involved major surgeries including knee replacement surgeries and hysterectomies, can now be done in an outpatient facility. Because of this technology, I have the potential to make a big impact in the lives of a broad range of patients. “ To schedule a consultation with Dr. Bhatti for any of these conditions, you can contact the clinic directly at 346-758-8414 or call 1-866-4PAD HELP.

uan Diaz-Linarez has worked retail in the hotel industry all of his life. “I’ve never had a desk job,” explains Juan. “I’ve always worked on my feet. I was starting to experience some pain in my legs...some issues with the blood circulation. My mom also had blood circulation problems, so I guessed that my problem was partly genetic and partly due to my job. My general doctor recommended that I see a vascular/vein doctor. I found Dr. Ulises Baltazar through the Houston Methodist Hospital system.” A highly regarded vein specialist, Dr. Baltazar is a leader in his field. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from vein or lymphatic system issues. Dr. Baltazar is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery. He’s a Fellow of the American College of Phlebology and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. “At my first appointment,” continues Juan, “Dr. Baltazar was very friendly, and he paid attention to my complaints. He came up with a game plan: He wanted me to wear compression stockings for one week, and then come back and see him. When I returned, I let him know that I had experienced some improvement. He then ordered a bilateral venous duplex with reflux exam on both legs. With those results in hand, Dr. Baltazar explained to me that there were two types of veins in my legs: superficial veins and deep veins. I had venous insufficiency—the superficial veins were inflamed, and the circulation of blood was not functioning correctly in both of my legs. Dr. Baltazar recommended endovenous laser ablation to burn the superficial veins, so that blood could flow through the deep veins only.” Juan scheduled to do his left leg first. “To be honest, I was nervous. But the two nurses that prepared before my procedure were very nice. Then Dr. Baltazar explained exactly what he was going to do. I fully trusted him. I prayed to God to guide his hands and do what he needed to do to help

me. During the procedure, he both continued to explain what was happening, and told me about his personal life...including his wife and daughters. That was comforting to me.” Just hours after the procedure, Juan could already feel his left leg was more relaxed than his right, and he was feeling less pain—a big improvement. “I will get my right leg done in a few days,” says Juan. “I’m very happy that I landed under Dr. Baltazar’s care. He’s very friendly, professional, and passionate about what he does. He’s compassionate, he takes the time to speak to you, and he answers all questions. I absolutely recommend Dr. Baltazar.”

In 2019, he joined forces with Memorial Eye Center, a well-established Houston area group of eye professionals that also enjoys a nearly 30-year reputation. This practice is built on personalized care and technology. “I want every patient to feel that we listen to them,” says Dr. Arnold. “And I want to be here when they need us. That’s why we’re open till 6pm most days, and we also keep some Saturday hours. I also believe in technology. Technology provides information about our patients and their eyes. The more information we have, the more we can target treatment. We always invest in the latest technology.” Over the years, Dr. Arnold has handselected top-notch doctors with similar philosophies to join his team. Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny and Dr. Joseph A. Land for many years. Both are highly regarded optometrists. The newest member of Dr. Arnold’s team is Dr. Michael Everson. Dr. Everson first came to Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land as an intern. Dr. Everson says, “Dr. Arnold is a well-known contact lens specialist. I’m a long-time wearer of contact lenses myself, and I took the internship to see if I liked contacts enough to do a residency. Those three months with Dr. Arnold solidified my decision.” In 2020, Dr. Everson completed his residency at University of Alabama– Birmingham with a specialty in contact lenses, soft lenses, and sports vision. Then, due to COVID-19, several of Dr. Everson’s job offers fell through. “I was driving home from Birmingham, back to Rockford, Illinois,” explains Dr. Everson. “I was unsure of what was next, when I got the call: Dr. Arnold had an opening...and he was offering it to me. expected him to have an opening! This is a well-run office. Most of the staff and technicians have been here for more than 20 years. The patient has a good experience from the moment they walk in the door until the moment they leave, and Dr. Arnold is a really great guy!” The team at Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land—Dr. Arnold, Dr. Everson, Dr. Horiszny, and Dr. Janes—is equipped with the technical knowledge, equipment, and expertise to cater to every individual’s eyecare needs. DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

The Benefits of a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist

A

pediatric dentist is a dentist that has additional, specialized training in child psychology, growth and development, and the special health care needs of children. Taking it one step further, a board-certified pediatric dentist, or diplomat, is a pediatric dentist that demonstrates exceptional knowledge and expertise. Less than 38% of all pediatric dental specialists within the United States have earned diplomat status. Dr. Faisal Khan, founder of local Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, is among this elite group. He’s also a fellow in special care dentistry.

by Amy Sharp

“Vast differences exist in the personalities and needs of children,” explains Dr. Khan. “My goal is to foster a positive relationship with your child. This way, they’re not afraid to visit the dentist. I strive to understand kids, and to interpret what’s going on when they can’t explain it. Parents, you’re part of this team too. My staff and I always walk you through the process, every step of the way.” Of course, your child couldn’t care less about the credentials of the doctor. Kids love Dr. Khan for his gentle demeanor and his super fun office! Your child will be invited to chill in the movie theater or play video games until they’re called back for their appointment. Dental examinations are performed on surfboard beds while unsuspecting patients enjoy a favorite show or movie on the ceiling-mounted TV. The floor-to-ceiling murals in this office transport both parents and children to a tranquil place under the sea. “Dentistry really works best when kids forget why they’re here!” says Dr. Khan. If your child doesn’t love going to the dentist, it’s time to discover the fun benefits of a board-certified pediatric dentist. Schedule your appointment at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental today!

anessa Marcelo, D.P.M. always knew she wanted to be in the medical field. “My undergraduate degree is in Exercise Science,” says Dr. Marcelo. “Then while I was in graduate school, I had an opportunity to shadow a professor of podiatry. That’s when I fell in love with this field.” Born and raised in Miami, Dr. Marcelo moved to Fort Bend County this summer to join the team at Vargas Foot and Ankle Specialists. “I’ve never left Florida before,” explains Dr. Marcelo. “I did my undergraduate at Florida State, my masters and doctorate at Barry University, and a three-year residency at Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, FL. I knew if I ever left Florida, I would go to Texas to put down roots.” “I chose Vargas Foot and Ankle Specialists because it’s a well-rounded practice,” continues Dr. Marcelo. “And while Fort Bend County is different from Florida, it’s also the same in a lot of ways. There’s a lot of diversity and culture here, and the schools are top-notch. It’s a great place to raise my two-year-old son, Elijah. I love the outdoors and running, and there’s plenty of room here to go on walks with my Goldendoodle, Enzo. I’ve also heard the food here is amazing, and I’m pretty excited about that!” Dr. Marcelo is fluent in Spanish and qualified to treat all foot and ankle ailments in patients of all ages. Her areas of interest include foot and ankle reconstruction, diabetic foot care, sports medicine, and the aesthetic and regenerative aspects of podiatric medicine, including hammer toes and bunions. fficially, Texas’s nickname is The Lone Star State. However, we’re also known across the country as The Friendly State. Texas Monthly sums it up best, “Being glad to see you—no matter who you are—is something our mamas taught us from birth. The wide smile, the firm handshake, the slap on the back—it’s the way Texans meet the world, the social grease that makes living here so pleasant and easy.” No one embodies this friendliness better than local dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. “I’m proud to be a native Texan,” explains Dr. Lomonte. “I grew up in Beaumont, received my undergraduate degree from Lamar University, and my Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. My kids were raised here, and since I’ve been practicing at this same location since 1982, I’m now seeing second and third generations of patients. It’s a wonderful feeling—a family feeling—when I watch patients grow up, and then bring their own kids in to see me. At our office, new patients are always treated like family. I want to shake your hand, hear your stories, and really get to know you.” For those that haven’t seen a dentist in quite some time, Dr. Lomonte offers words of encouragement:

“So often, people are afraid to come in. Maybe they’ve not been to the dentist in a few years, and they think their teeth will be the worst I’ve ever seen. In nearly all instances, that is just not the case. With a little maintenance and repair, most people’s teeth are actually just fine! If your teeth do require work, we’ll set up a plan and budget that you’re comfortable with, and then get back to talking about fishing or other more interesting topics!” “Your smile and your friendship are my top priorities,” says Dr. Lomonte. “I would love to get to know you and your family.”

ooking for a top-notch dermatologist? Look no further than your own backyard! Rosenberg Dermatology is a satellite location of the highlyesteemed, Houston-area Heights Dermatology & Aesthetic Center. Boardcertified dermatologist, Dr. Alpesh Desai, says, “We’re now in our fifth year of bringing the most advanced dermatology care available to this community.” Certified Physician Assistant Celia Vaclavik says, “Our list of services includes all areas of dermatology. Our ‘bread and butter’ is skin checks for skin cancer. We also treat acne, rashes that are difficult to diagnose, and perform skin biopsies. We have in-office patch testing capabilities available for contact allergens, and we’re adding cutaneous testing very soon.” For those diagnosed with skin cancer, Rosenberg Dermatology is one of the only offices in the area to provide superficial radiation therapy, a non-surgical and non-scary approach that’s effective in treating both skin cancer and keloid scars (scars from bypass surgery, c-section, and earlobe scars). Rosenberg Dermatology is also well-versed

in the cosmetic side of dermatology, including “eleven wrinkles,” “crow’s feet,” “bunny lines,” and “marionette lines.” Celia says, “Because each individual is different and each face needs something different, we offer a wide range of aesthetic services. Botox and other fillers can take care of all your ‘lines’ and ‘feet.’ For those that would rather not have anything inserted into the skin, microneedling is a fantastic more natural option. The microneedling procedure uses fine needles to stimulate collagen production. We also offer a variety of chemical peels to really even out the skin tone. For many clients, I do a combination of chemical peels and microneedling...giving them skin they really love!” Dr. Desai has been named one of Houston’s Best Physicians by Health & Fitness Sports Magazine. Rosenberg Dermatology is a member of the Central Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. They care for patients of all ages, and this team is more than happy to do educational events for groups and churches in our community. Be sure to give them a shout out at the upcoming Fort Bend County Fair parade!

he mission at St. Michael’s Elite Hospital is “to go beyond your expectations in the delivery of medical care in your time of need.” Founder, Dr. Shannon Orsak, says, “We started with a standalone emergency room almost 15 years ago. Our idea was to create a better environment for patients...a place with personalized service and fast turnaround times. In 2019, we expanded this same care into a concierge concept hospital. To ensure you experience the same, individualized care in our hospital, I’m thrilled to introduce our hospitalist, Christian Sonnier, M.D.” What is a hospitalist? It’s a physician who specializes in providing and managing the care and treatment of hospitalized patients. Dr. Sonnier says, “Twenty years ago, if you were hospitalized, your family doctor would see you in the hospital. Today, a hospitalist takes on that responsibility, so that your doctor can focus on outpatient services.”

Medicine

“I provide the inpatient care at St. Michael’s,” continues Dr. Sonnier. “I visit patients and provide one-on-one care. I’m from a small town in Louisiana, and I like to practice what I call ‘old school’ medicine. I strive to get to know patients, and provide personal care. I enjoy St. Michael’s because it’s small. There aren’t 40 patients a day...I may only have ten. That means I can spend four times as much time with each patient. St. Michael’s gets back to the basics of what a hospital needs, without the bureaucracy and politics. The nurses are friendly and nice, and I have the time to do what I like to do. Patients are taken care of, there’s nothing else in the way. It’s a hospitalist’s dream!” This Baylor University graduate completed medical school at Louisiana University in Shreveport and his residency at LSU Family Medicine in Alexandria, Louisiana. Dr. Sonnier moved to Houston in 2016 as a hospitalist covering medical-surgical units, intermediate care units, and ICUs. When he’s

not on the clock, Dr. Sonnier enjoys family time with his wife Michelle and their three boys. “I love working with St. Michael’s Elite Hospital,” says Dr. Sonnier. “It’s a small facility, but it’s capable of a whole lot! They really do a fantastic job!”

Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph opened Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy back in 2003 to be your neighborhood pharmacy. “No one should be expected to wait for 45 minutes to have a medication filled,” explains Dr. Campbell. “We take great pride in providing customer service with a family feel. I know some of you have questions about compounding, so I thought I’d provide some of the different reasons our patients have their medications compounded.”

Why compound a medication? • It’s no longer available. This often happens when not enough people are using the drug, and it becomes unprofitable to continue mass-producing it. But what about the few people benefiting from the drug? Compounding pharmacists can recreate it! • No unwanted ingredients. Commercially manufactured medications commonly contain lactose, preservatives, dyes, gluten, sugar, and a variety of other non-active ingredients. From allergies and intolerance to diets and lifestyle, there are a variety of reasons individuals avoid many of these ingredients. But when you need the medicine, a compounding pharmacist can create a personalized formulation to give you the treatment you need while leaving out the problematic ingredients. • Make the medicine easier to use. A compounding pharmacist can flavor many medications, making them more palatable without losing their effectiveness. This is very handy for children, elderly patients, and even pets! Your compounding pharmacist can also compound your medicines in different dosage formats…like an anti-nausea cream that’s rubbed on the inside of the wrist so your kids can keep it down. • Correct dosage. Commercially available medicines come in standard dosages. Let’s say you need 15mg of a medication, but it only comes in 10mg and 20mg forms. You’re either over-medicated, under-medicated, or need to split a pill. With compounding, your medication can be made in the exact dosage your body requires. • Cost. In some instances, having a compounding pharmacy make your medication is cheaper than its commercially available version. Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy also stocks all commercially available medications, and they accept and bill insurance. It’s the right pharmacy, right here. hat if you could use your own body as medicine for pain? Dr. Ugochi Azuike, founder of Sugar Land Interventional Orthopedics & Regenerative Medicine, says, “Back when I was a resident at Baylor College of Medicine, I attended a talk by Dr. Christopher J. Centeno, an international expert in regenerative medicine. He described cutting-edge, frontier medicine for pain, and I wanted to be a part of it!” Dr. Azuike went on to become the first female physician to complete an Interventional Orthopedic and Regenerative Medicine fellowship at the Centeno Schultz Clinic in Colorado. “What we do here at Sugar Land Interventional Orthopedics & Regenerative Medicine,” continues Dr. Azuike, “is use your own body, either platelets or stem cells, along with other orthobiologics, to heal and repair musculoskeletal and spinal issues. This is not a band-aid, and it’s not surgery. We are addressing the root issue. We can use regenerative medicine to help with the repair of several body parts, including the knee, rotator cuff, hip, headaches, neck pain, degenerative diseases, osteoarthritis, sciatica, and more. My patients range in age from middle schoolers to 90 years and beyond.” In the United States, stem cell treatments happen in a single day, meaning you are not allowed to take several weeks to grow your cells in culture. In Texas, only physicians are allowed to perform the treatments. “Everything is percutaneous,” explains Dr. Azuike. “Meaning, we only use needles. I have no scalpel in my office. For PRP (platelet-rich plasma), we draw blood; for stem cells, we draw bone marrow from the pelvis. We then concentrate your cells to prepare them for use. I then use live x-ray (fluoroscopy) and/or ultrasound to inject your injury with precise placement. I never inject blindly.” Dr. Azuike is a credentialed Department of Labor physician. She handles both state and federal workman’s compensation cases for the civil servants, TSA, CIA, USPS, and more. She says, “So many of these individuals have been on the job for 20, 30, even 40 years...and these are not physically easy jobs. As a board-certified PM&R (physical medicine and rehabilitation) physician, she is allowed to recommend CBD with low doses of THC to patients in Texas. Dr. Azuike was named one of the top PM&R physicians of 2021. In her spare time, Dr. Azuike enjoys recording music. She’s featured on a gold and platinumselling album by G-Eazy. ugust is an exciting time of the year for both students and parents as it marks the end of summer vacation and the beginning of the new school year. Some will be attending their first classes while others will be returning to live classroom instruction after months of online learning. With that in mind, Dr. Daniel A. Nwachokor agrees with the CDC recommendation that everyone 12 years and older should get a COVID-19 vaccination to help protect against the coronavirus. Widespread vaccination is the best tool we have to ensure a safe and healthy 2021-22 school year for all. Dr. Nwachokor knows the importance of education as it seems like only a few years ago he was walking the halls of Hightower High School (FBISD) as a student in the Medical Science Academy. He has fond memories of participating in athletics and extracurricular clubs. “Balancing sports, HOSA, FBLA, Boy Scouts, and NAACP ACTO-SO taught me the importance of time management,” he said. “Now we are a mentorship site for FBISD and LCISD seniors pursuing careers in medicine. I am most proud that all our mentees found value in our office experience and went on to college.” In an effort to promote a safe return to school, Community Health and Life Center is launching its Back-to-School Health Clinic every Saturday in August. “We will be offering wellness exams, school sport/activity physicals (UIL), and vaccinations,” Dr. Nwachokor said. “Appointments are required. Pediatric Dentistry

t’s been nearly 10 years since Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal D.D.S., opened Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry here in Sugar Land. Since then, she has added a Katy location...and this year her Sugar Land office moved to a new location. “We’ve grown with the love of this community,” explains Dr. Shilpa. “With an associate and two additional pediatric dentists joining this summer, we needed more space to provide the array of services that we provide! Our new, state-of-the-art Sugar Land office is located next to Cornelius Nursery at the intersection of Hwy 6 and Hwy 90. It’s double the size of our old office, with lots of new technology. For the safety of our patients, treatment rooms are equipped with negative pressure technology to help prevent airborne illnesses like COVID-19, flu, and many others.” At both locations, Dr. Shilpa and her team provide personalized, attentive care and services for patients ages birth to 21. “There’s nothing we can’t do in Pediatric Dentistry,” says Dr. Shilpa. “We cater to all kids, including special needs kids, and full mouth rehabilitation is a specialty of mine. Many of the younger kids (under age 6) do not have the attention span to sit in the chair for a long time. Sedation dentistry extends the treatment time, and we can take care of most (and in many instances all!) issues in one sitting. Comforting treatment under sedation helps us build a good rapport, and our patients are not scared at the following visit...or for the rest of their life!” Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry offers all types of sedation, including nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation at the office. Dentistry under general anesthesia is offered in a hospital setting. White crowns, laser frenectomies for lip tie and tongue tie, soft tissue laser procedures, interceptive orthodontics for young children, and Invisalign are all in the scope of pediatric services available at Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry. “We do everything in the most child-friendly way,” says Dr. Shilpa. “Lasers are a great option for cavity prep...they provide a painless way to take care of cavities without anesthesia. For our orthodontic services, we only do digital impressions. Traditional impressions are tough, especially for kids with a strong gag reflex. Digital impressions make this process easy-peasy!” Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry won the Best Pediatric Dental Office Reader’s Choice Award in Fort Bend County by Living Magazine. It’s in-network with most insurances and offers convenient office hours including Saturday appointments. Appointments can be scheduled both online and by phone.

Ozone Therapy

What Is It?

by Amy Sharp

D

r. Julia Ward, founder of local Balanced Body Functional Medicine, says, “Ozone is a medical gas that has been used to treat people since 1856. Medical ozone is created by running a current through pure oxygen. Ozone stimulates the immune system, reduces inflammation, and it helps our cells use oxygen with the most efficiency.” “This therapy is not new,” continues Dr. Ward. “Ozone therapy was used to treat gangrene during WWI. Today, ozone therapy is ideal for anyone with a chronic infection (Lyme, mold, viral infections, bacterial infections), arthritis, heart disease, or skin disease. It’s also a powerful antiaging tool and a great complement to cancer treatments. Cancer cannot grow in an oxygen-rich environment.” At Balanced Body Functional Medicine, Dr. Ward can administer ozone therapy in three ways: Prolozone therapy (O3 injected directly into the joints), direct IV, or using the 10-pass hyperbaric method. Dr. Ward explains, “Prolozone is an effective therapy to reduce inflammation, speed healing, and decrease pain in the joints. It takes minutes, and it’s as good as PRP (platelet rich plasma). With direct IV, a syringe of oxygen and ozone is injected slowly into your vein through a very tiny needle. The process takes a couple of minutes, and results come with repeated treatments. The 10-pass hyperbaric method involves placing an IV and withdrawing 200 ml of blood into a glass jar. The blood is infused with ozone under

pressure, and then it is infused back into the body. This is done 10 times (or ‘passes’) in one session and takes about an hour. It effectively kills bacteria, viruses, yeast, and mold toxins, as well as rids the body of heavy metals and toxins. It has been shown to effectively eradicate chronic viral infections such as hepatitis C and herpes simplex virus.” Dr. Ward received her training in ozone therapy from some of the best. She learned the 10-pass hyperbaric method from Dr. Robert Rowen. Dr. Rowen enjoys an international reputation for pioneering work in oxidation and other innovative medical treatments. Dr. Ward studied direct IV ozone therapy under Dr. Howard Robins. Dr. Robins is a leader in the field of bio-oxidative therapies. He offers intravenous ozone therapy to men, women, and children in New York City. Ozone therapy is just one of the many functional, holistic options offered at Balanced Body Functional Medicine. “This is personalized, attentive care as you age,” explains Dr. Ward. “Many health complaints are rooted in hormonal imbalances, inflammatory diets, poor intestinal health, environmental toxicity, and lifestyle-related problems. I help you get to the bottom of what’s causing your problems, and then I help you feel better!”

Eye Care with a Personal Touch Dr. Faheem Inayatali created Dry Eye & Specialty Center changed my life!”

to provide specialized care for dry eye, myopia control, and other difficult-to-solve eye health problems. “Many patients with dry eye disease suffer for years using various eye drops that only treat symptoms,” explains Dr. Faheem. “For many, this is not enough. Dry eye is a chronic condition that progresses over time. We are excited to be the first eye care office to utilize the FDA-approved IPL Steller to treat dry eye. It uses light technology to target the inflammatory cause of dry eye and bring it into remission. Another cause that is often overlooked is bacteria hidden within the eyelashes that causes itching and burning. Our certified lid hygienists perform treatments that fully clean lid margins. Patients from all over the world have turned to us for relief, and we’re looking to begin clinical trials to set the gold standard for dry eye around the country.” “My second passion is myopia management,” continues Dr. Faheem. “We’re in an epidemic: Thirty percent of the world is myopic (nearsighted), and soon to be 50% by 2050. Every year, myopic children tend to need stronger glasses...their sight is getting worse over time. Ultimately, the retina is stretching. If it stretches too much, the chances for retinal detachment are severely increased. Many parents don’t realize there are options to slow myopia progression, so that it doesn’t get to the point of becoming debilitating or causing visual impairment. This is near and dear to me. I’m myopic; I’ve worn glasses since I was six. I now have retinal thinning. If this technology had been available to me, it would have

met the late Johnny Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat when we bought this lot back in 1994,” says Gene E. Huebner, M.D. “There was an old house here, and he worked on the A/C for us. When we built the new house, the builder put in the A/C units. But when they needed work, and then replacement, we went back to Jackson Air and Heat. Today, Johnny’s son Brian owns the business, and Jackson Air and Heat is still my A/C company.” “The Jacksons are good, hardworking people,” continues Dr. Huebner. “They are down-to-earth, they answer the phones, and they show up when they say they will. There is no big corporate structure. On a personal level, Brian’s stepmom Nancy is from Panama. My wife grew up in Panama, and they have a special connection. Nancy is also one of my patients!” Jackson Air and Heat has been a Fort Bend staple since 1982. It’s the oldest independent Trane dealer in Sugar Land. Brian says, “My dad teamed up with Trane all those years

ago because he knew there was a difference in quality and reliability of air conditioners. Trane has the quality, reliability, and technology needed in our hot, humid Texas summers. With the constant changes in the air conditioning industry, it’s so important to stay on top of the latest technologies with continuing education and training. It’s not just cooling and heating anymore. It’s also energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Tranes allow us to keep our customers comfortable, safe, and happy. To date, we’ve replaced two of Dr. Huebner’s three systems with a Trane. For those interested in an upgrade or replacement, now is a great time. Trane is offering 0% financing or instant rebates, and Centerpoint also has rebates currently available.” “I’ve lived here for 41 years,” says Dr. Huebner. “There are lots of new names in A/C in the Sugar Land area...but Jackson Air and Heat continues to come up. It’s a great, family-run business that I certainly recommend. I think the fact that I’ve used them for nearly 30 years speaks for itself!”

Dr. Huebner is managing partner at Southwest OB-GYN Associates. “Coincidentally, I delivered Brian’s son, Blake, 26 years ago this month,” says Dr. Huebner. Today, both of Brian’s sons, Brian and Blake, carry on the family legacy by serving Jackson Air and Heat customers with the same honesty and integrity as their dad and late grandfather. Water Filtration System

OR

Water

Softener? by Amy Sharp

L

uke Burkhalter, Master Plumber at local Alan’s Plumbing, says, “Most people want to provide their family with the highest quality water possible. Here at Alan’s, we can perform a water consultation to help you understand the quality of your water...what impurities it contains, and how hard your water is. We’ll help you determine if a filter and/or softener is right for you.” “Installation of a water filtration system removes various contaminants from your water,” continues Luke. “Even if our municipal water treatment plants do a pretty good job of providing clean water, there can still be some (or a lot!) of impurities that can gather in your water before reaching your home. Removing impurities is important to the efficiency and reliability of your plumbing system. It’s also important to the overall health of your family. Filtered water has no odor, and it tastes great! Better tasting water promotes more water consumption. Whole house water filtration systems have the added benefit of treating all the water coming into the house. Water used for showers, cooking, and laundry are free of impurities, and so is the drinking water!” Water that tastes odd can also be a sign of hard water. Luke says, “Hard water can be a very costly problem. The calcium and scale from hard water that accumulates in pipes can cause restricted water flow...creating a very high risk of losing water pressure throughout the house. Hard water can also ravage hot water heaters and other appliances, causing a perpetual cycle

of repairs and replacements. While water filtration systems are designed to remove various contaminants, they may not eliminate scale build up. A correctly installed water softener will make appliances last longer, clothes will be cleaner, hair and skin will be softer, and there will be a lot less buildup both in your pipes and on your shower doors and tile. I have personal experience with this issue. My son Wyatt had chronic dry skin. I installed a water softener in my home, and Wyatt’s skin has improved so much!” Alan’s Plumbing was founded nearly three decades ago by Luke’s dad, Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter. Luke’s uncle, Chris Burkhalter,

is also a Master Plumber. Luke’s brother Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license. His brother Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. The boys’ mom Jennifer, Luke’s wife Chelsea, and Katie Johnson answer the phones. The addition of journeyman-licensed plumbers, Jeff Johnson and Jaime, and tradesmanlicensed Trevor make this the best and most trusted licensed plumbing company in town. Luke says, “If you’re looking to improve the quality of your water, give us a call. The answer could be a water softener, it could be a water filtration system, or a combo. We’ll figure out what’s best for your home and your family.”

hings come and go pretty quickly these days, and it can be hard to find something that stands the test of time. We’ve found a family-owned and operated store that’s been in our community for over thirty years...and the products it sells are one hundred percent rock solid. Lone Star Floors is locally owned by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer, and Imad Mansour. In addition to flooring, Lone Star Floors does full kitchen and bathroom remodeling—including plumbing, shower glass, painting and granite. You don’t have to pull on your hiking boots and apply sunscreen to enjoy nature. A new granite countertop gives that great outdoors feeling right at home...with the durability you need in the busiest room in your house. After all, Mother Nature put in some serious time getting these stones ready. Some granite can be maintenance-free. Think about the wonders of the natural world…they’d be nothing without the warmth and beauty of stone. From the shale and sandstone of the Grand Canyon to the granite of the Grand Tetons to the limestone of our very own Natural Bridge Caverns, each stone has its own unique look. Why not bring that unique beauty into your own home? “You might be surprised to learn,” says Mohamed, “that granite is just about the same price as synthetic stone. When you’re updating your kitchen, choosing granite gives you added value without a lot of added cost...and just like Lone Star Floors, it really stands the test of time.” Visit one of the three showrooms today!

The Most Interesting Man In The World ROBERT CLARE BROWN, III May 23, 1936 - June 14, 2021

Onofrey. “He’s a longtime community advocate and philanthropist…at

one point he and my mother-in-law Carole were known as ‘Mr. and Mrs. Fort Bend County!’ But to those of us closest to him, Bobby was simply known as ‘the most interesting man in the world.’” Born in Bishop, CA, Bobby lived his entire childhood in the state of California. At Barstow High School, he was a star athlete...receiving the Best All Around Athlete Award his senior year. Bobby met the love of his life Carole when she was in the 8th grade and he was in the 9th grade. The two married on October 2, 1954. Bobby’s jobs in power and then telephone took the couple to Nevada, back to California, Arizona, back to California again, and finally to Sugar Land. The most important part of this adventure was the welcoming of the couple’s two daughters: Jody Lynn and Trudy Ann. Highlights along the way included Bobby’s stint playing basketball with a semi professional team. Bobby played against the Harlem Magicians (now known as the Harlem Globetrotters) and became lifelong friends with Marcus Haines, the original player for the team. Bobby and Carole were members of the International Safari Club. They made frequent trips to Africa with lifelong friends that accom-

talking about Sugar Land Telephone Company and Fort Bend County. But he and my mom were welcomed with open arms!” The Fort Bend Economic Development Council considered Bobby captain of the ship. He steered this community through turbulent times and the waters of growth for more than two decades as chairman. Carole and Bobby were involved in more local charities than one can count. Bobby particularly loved charities that involved making children’s

lives better. He not only worked for these charities, but he donated money generously at the hundreds of events he attended over the years. Bobby started a tradition of bidding on any dogs that were being auctioned off at the fundraisers. He would win, pay for the dog,

and then give it back immediately to be auctioned off again...doubling the amount for the charity. Over the years, it’s estimated this happened at least 100 times. Bobby always said that he wanted to give back to this community that had been so generous to him and his family. Surrounded by family, Bobby passed away peacefully on June 14, 2021 in Kremmling, Colorado. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carole; daughter Jody and husband David; daughter Trudy and husband John; grandchildren: Kristen, Tim, Nick, Courtney, and Sam; three great grandchildren: Makai, Liam, Brody;

and his brother, Dennis. Trudy says, “Dad was one of a kind...a loving, kind, generous man who would do anything for his family, friends, and community. His sense of humor and telling jokes was amazing. He will be remembered by not only his family, but an entire community of people who loved him.”

BOB BROWNISMS that were read at his funeral:

You can have anything you want on the menu as long as you eat it all.

Confucius say: Man who go to bed with hard problem wake up with solution in hand.

If you can’t eat it all you can have it for breakfast with milk on it.

Do you have any Lanny Moffit and the Hinkly Raiders?

That’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!

Sometimes I sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits.

If you ever asked Bob what college he went to, he would proudly say “University of Iowa!” While flipping the bird!
