Three Things to Consider When Purchasing a LongTerm Care Policy

by Amy Sharp

T

his past year, Andy Sharp, President and CEO of Altere Financial, LLC, illustrated several different long-term care scenarios for clients when working through their financial plans. Here are guidelines Andy found that could be helpful for those considering purchasing a long-term care policy. Longevity “This is not as straightforward as I originally believed,” says Andy. “But how long you live may make a difference. With a long-term care policy, the earlier you require access to your benefit, the higher the rate of return on your initial premium. But as you age, that rate of return continues to decline. If your family history has an average life expectancy less than the national average (77.8 in the US per the CDC), then a long-term care policy could work in your favor (depending on the policy). However, if you have a

history of longevity, it might make more sense to invest what you would have paid in premiums yourself, forgetting the insurance.” Taxation “Tax-free growth and distribution are certainly buzzwords when it comes to long-term policy benefits,” continues Andy. “But I have seen several situations where the difference in tax benefits between a long-term benefit and self-funding the long-term care through a taxable brokerage account is a wash. What is usually not discussed is your actual tax bracket in your 80s or 90s. If you are receiving a pension, social security, or forced to take large required minimum distributions, self-funded medical expense deductions might be large enough that they actually help your income tax return. If you pay your long-term care expenses from a long-term policy, you potentially

lose the ability to deduct these expenses on your tax return.” Emotional Well-being “I have noticed less stress with clients who have a policy in place vs. those that pull money from their portfolio to cover long-term care costs,” explains Andy. “This part of the planning process cannot be quantified. Here, rates of return and tax benefits are no longer relevant. More often than not, I’ve experienced clients wishing they had a policy when the time arrives, or thankful they had some type of coverage where they didn’t have to touch their portfolio. This includes situations where clients had rather large portfolios with the potential to cover costs for several years.” It’s a lot to think about: Peace of mind vs. leveraging your initial premium for a possible higher rate of return. “Everyone’s situation is different,” says Andy. “No part of financial planning is one-size-fits-all, including how to fund potential long-term care.” Schedule a consultation with Andy for a thorough review of your individual situation. “Together, we can decide what’s best for you, your family, and your emotional well-being.”

umbness, cramps, weakness, foot wounds, discoloration, and cold feet: They’re all warning signs of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD is a condition where blood flow to the legs, feet, and toes is decreased due to plaque buildup on arterial walls, causing the peripheral arteries to narrow (atherosclerosis). Dr. Zagum Bhatti, Vascular Interventional Radiologist at Modern Vascular of Houston, says, “The largest risk factor for PAD is diabetes. But smokers and those with high blood pressure or high cholesterol are also at risk.” At Modern Vascular of Houston, Dr. Bhatti and his team are committed to aggressive treatments for PAD using minimally-invasive, image-guided procedures. “For best results, it is critical to revascularize the arteries below the knee and in the foot,” says Dr. Bhatti. “Here

at Modern Vascular, we have the resources to accomplish this. We perform below the ankle revascularization. This relieves rest pain, heals foot ulcers, and usually can prevent amputation. Patients can move again, and they feel better.” All revascularizations at Modern Vascular are outpatient procedures and take about two hours. Patients go home the same day. Dr. Bhatti completed fellowships in Neuroradiology and Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Rush University Medical Center. He is an expert in the treatment of arterial and venous disorders. Numerous residents and fellows have trained under Dr. Bhatti, and he has presented at national and international meetings. “I find this field fascinating,” says Dr. Bhatti. “We can reach any part of the body through a pinhole in the skin to treat an array of disorders. Disease treatments that once involved major surgery can now be done in an outpatient

facility. Because of this technology, I have the potential to make a big impact in the lives of more patients.” The Modern Vascular location here in Richmond is the 13th clinic in the nation, the 4th in Texas, and the only Houston area clinic. hen 77-year-old Frank Welsh was in the hospital back in December, he noticed his legs were swelling significantly. Frank says, “The swelling was unrelated to my reason for being in the hospital. Not only were they swelling, my legs started weeping. The leaking fluid would soak totally through my socks, and my pants were wet to the knees. No one knew what was going on. Finally, someone told me it sounded like lymphedema. I had never heard of it.” After leaving the hospital, Frank spent two weeks looking for someone to help him with this condition. He says, “I called several hospitals and referral services. I went through many names before finally, someone referred me to Dr. Ulises Baltazar.” Dr. Baltazar is a leader in his field. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from vein or lymphatic system issues. Dr. Baltazar is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery. He’s a Fellow of the American College of Phlebology and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic. What is lymphedema? Dr. Baltazar says, “In a word, it’s swelling. Extra fluid builds up in the tissue when the lymphatic system isn’t working well. Occasionally, we can’t identify the reason for it, but often we see it when the lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes are damaged or have been removed. In some cases like Frank’s, it can be secondary to previous treatments for his prostate cancer.” Frank describes Dr. Baltazar as very down-to-earth, easy to talk to, and knowledgeable. “He listens to you,” says Frank. “Dr. Baltazar is extremely caring and compassionate, and he does what is necessary to help you. I wish I could say the same

about all doctors! Dr. Baltazar wrapped my legs in a special way to allow them to heal, and he taught my wife how to do the wrapping (She does an excellent job!). Dr. Baltazar told me my condition will never go away; I just have to control it. After five or six weeks, my legs are now normal size; no more weeping, and I don’t have ulcers. I’m in good shape!” “I would recommend Dr. Baltazar anytime,” continues Frank. “He knows what he’s doing! Call him quickly if you are looking for someone who specializes in lymphedema. He’s a busy man, but as far as I’m concerned, he’s the expert.”

Dr.

Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph started Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in 2003 after working for several compounding pharmacies in the Houston area. Dr. Campbell says, “I actually worked at a K-Mart pharmacy for a brief period while I wrote my business plan. I’m glad I did. It was then that I realized the retail pharmacy environment is seriously flawed. Why should patients be expected to wait for 45 minutes to have one medication filled? I couldn’t accept that true customer service was a thing of the past, and I knew my compounding pharmacy would be very different.” The first Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy location opened on Kirby Drive, near the Texas Medical Center and Rice Village. Then in 2007, Dr. Campbell opened his second location right here in Fort Bend County, near Houston Methodist Sugar Land. At both locations, the Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy staff takes great pride in providing customer service with a family feel. So what is compounding? “It’s creating a personalized medication for an individual patient,” explains Dr. Campbell. “We compound medications for many reasons. We can make medications that are no longer mass produced, but you still need them. So many commercially manufactured medications contain lactose, preservatives, dyes, gluten, sugar and a variety of other non-active ingredients. We can make them without these ingredients for individuals who have an allergy, an intolerance, or simply a lifestyle that doesn’t include these fillers. Or we can just make your medication easier to use. Medications for kids or pets can be flavored, and we can even change the dosage form. For example, an anti-nausea cream that’s rubbed on the inside of the wrist might be easier to keep down.” 6 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2021

erry Gentry, MD is an interventional pain physician with Houston Spine and Rehabilitation Centers. “I treat various musculoskeletal illnesses in patients that do not respond to conservative treatments, including chiropractic care and physical therapy,” says Dr. Gentry. “I’m excited to announce that I will now be doing outpatient procedures right here in Sugar Land at St. Michael’s Elite Hospital.” What is an interventional pain physician? Dr. Gentry says, “Most of us live long enough to experience pain in some way or another. What I do is help patients without relying on opiods. I utilize minimally-invasive procedures to decrease pain without surgery.” Pain intervention procedures include nerve blocks, joint injections, epidural steroid injections, radio frequency ablations, and more. “The first time I meet a patient,” continues Dr. Gentry, “I have what I call a ‘Come to Jesus’ meeting...because I’m not going to just give them pain meds. My goal is to find the cause of the pain and treat it. Once pain is decreased, I then take care of the patient from a rehabilitation and preventive aspect. Physical therapy helps teach patients to prevent

further injury and live a healthier lifestyle. After graduating from PT, it’s important that patients keep up what they learned at home. Motion is key. I’m a big advocate of everyone staying as healthy as they can. One of my most memorable patients is a little lady that had been in pain for more than 20 years. Cancer had affected the nerves to her legs, and she was on heavy-duty opiates. With a nerve block, I was able to cut her pain meds down to a tenth of what they once were. She’s been a patient for more than 10 years. Just a sweetheart.” Previously, Dr. Gentry’s Sugar Land patients were driving to the Woodlands to receive treatment. Now they can stay right here at home. “St. Michael’s Elite Hospital has cutting-edge machinery onsite,” says Dr. Gentry, “including a new MRI machine just for extremities. Their staff is impressive. CEO/CNO Jessica Rivas runs a tight ship. I’m ex-military myself; I served as a naval officer for 12 years. Jessica and I are a good fit!” Dr. Gentry reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander and received three Naval Achievement medals for his stellar service. For 17 years, he served as a board-certified

ringside physician at professional boxing and MMA events. Dr. Gentry is a male physique competitor, a fitness enthusiast, and enjoys power flow yoga and dancing. “I love what I do,” says Dr. Gentry. “I help people, and I pray that God continues to guide my hands.” To schedule a consultation with Dr. Gentry at Houston Spine and Rehabilitation Centers, call 281-3620006. His Dentist for Most of His Adult Life

by Amy Sharp aul Lehnhoff has seen his dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, for most of his adult life. “My wife and I moved here in 1990,” says Paul. “That’s when we started seeing Dr. Lomonte. Our daughters started seeing him when they were just little kids. Our youngest was two when we moved here, and our other daughter was born shortly afterward. One of them still sees Dr. Lomonte as an adult!” Why have Paul and his family stayed with the same dentist for more than 30 years? “It’s a really casual atmosphere,” explains Paul. “Very friendly. Dr. Lomonte is great, and there doesn’t seem to be much turnover in his staff. I’ve had the same hygienist for I’m guessing 12 to 15 years. I go every six months for cleanings, and Dr. Lomonte has done a couple of fillings for me and a crown too. They were easy!” In practice at his same location on Murphy Road since 1982, families like the Lehnhoffs are not uncommon for Dr. Lomonte. Today he sees second and even third generation patients. “I designed this practice to meet the needs of entire families,” says Dr. Lomonte. “I take care of adults and children...from the simplest fillings to cosmetic reconstruction. It is my belief that by focusing on continuing education, I can make sure you get the best, most advanced care possible. That’s Come in why I keep up with the latest in technology and proceas a patient dures in this constantly evolving field of dentistry. But your emotional well-being is just as important. I want to get to and leave know you and your family. My patients are my friends, and as a friend! every single visit to my office should be a pleasant one.

He’s a great guy and a great dentist.”

Gas Leak?

A Sign It’s Time

by Amy Sharp

A

To Call A Plumber

lan Burkhalter, Master Plumber at local Alan’s Plumbing, says, “Most of you are familiar with the smell of natural gas. But did you know it’s actually odorless? Gas companies inject natural gas with a chemical called mercaptan that gives it a sulfur smell, like rotten eggs, to alert you to a gas leak.” Who should you call if you suspect a gas leak? “If you feel you are in danger, call Centerpoint,” continues Alan. “Otherwise, call a licensed plumber. Gas companies are responsible for leaks on their side of the meter, and you are responsible for leaks on your side of the meter. If you smell gas on your property, most likely a plumber will need to repair it. You can skip calling the gas company. Call us first, and we’ll get you taken care of...often at a lower cost than if the gas company came out, and then you had to call a plumber anyway.” Wait, what? Don’t plumbers deal in water? “It’s true,” continues Alan. “When most people

think of plumbing work, they think of water lines and plumbing fixtures like toilets, faucets, etc. But licensed plumbers also install and repair gas lines, and we work on gas water heaters and the gas valves that connect gas appliances (like dryers or stoves). People are often surprised by this. It’s not uncommon for us to receive a call from a homeowner that just put in new floors. After the flooring company finished, they instructed the homeowner to call a plumber to hook up their gas dryer (or other appliances). This is correct. It’s always safest to have a licensed plumber hook up the valves to your gas appliances.” At Alan’s Plumbing, Alan employs an entire team of licensed plumbers that he’s proud to call family. Alan’s brother Chris and his son Luke are also Master Plumbers. His son Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license. His son Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license.

Alan’s wife Jennifer, Luke’s wife Chelsea, and Katie Johnson answer the phones. This plumbing family includes journeyman-licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Jaime and tradesman-licensed Trevor. In business for more than 30 years, Fort Bend County residents have come to rely on the team at Alan’s Plumbing for reliable, licensed plumbing work at a fair price. “A natural gas leak is no joke,” says Alan. “It should be taken seriously. Give us a call if you have any questions about gas issues, and we’ll be happy to answer those for you. As always, we appreciate your trust in us over the years.”

ocal Jackson Air and Heat was established in 1982 by the late Johnny Jackson. It wasn’t the best of times, our country was in a recession. But Johnny stuck it out, gaining a reputation as the best A/C guy around in the ever-evolving world of air conditioning. Johnny’s son Brian worked alongside his dad as a teenager, learning the business from the ground up. Today, Brian carries on the same tradition of honesty and integrity his dad started at Jackson Air and Heat all those years ago. “I learned a lot from that man,” says Brian. “Dad knew there was a difference in quality and reliability of air conditioners. That’s why he teamed up with another Texas company, Trane out of Tyler, Texas. Trane has the quality, reliability, and technology needed in our hot, humid Texas summers. With the constant changes in the air conditioning industry, it’s so important to stay on top of the latest technologies with continuing education and training. It’s not just cooling and heating anymore. It’s also energy efficiency and indoor

air quality. Tranes allow us to keep our customers comfortable, safe, and happy!” And horses? “Dad loved horses!” explains Brian. “Growing up in rural northeastern Oklahoma, he used to ride his horse Champ to school in a one-room schoolhouse. When he retired from the family business, I gave him a quarter horse named Rolex, also known as Big Red. The pics of Dad and his horses are my favorite. Horses brought him so much happiness. I wish he could have met Trigger, my miniature horse. Trigger is so small, he can ride in the cab of my truck with me. He eats oats from our dining room table, and I built him his own ‘Happy Saloon.’ I think Dad would have gotten a real kick out of Trigger!” Jackson Air and Heat is our oldest independent Trane dealer here in Sugar Land. Today, both of Brian’s sons, Brian and Blake, and his grandson Jordan are also part of the business. This team reminds you that right now is the best time to make sure your air conditioner is ready for the imminent Texas heat. Brian says, “If your system barely made it through

last summer, it might be time to upgrade. To help out, Trane is offering 0% financing or instant rebates, plus Centerpoint also has rebates currently available.” “Stop horsing around,” adds Trigger. “Upgrade to a Trane today!”

ach year, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry (EFBHNM) provides food, toiletry items, and financial assistance to tens of thousands of people in temporary financial crisis in East Fort Bend County. EFBHNM Executive Director Vickie Coates says, “Our largest fundraiser of the year, Empty Bowls, is coming up...and we are excited to be moving the event back to Safari Texas. Safari Texas owners, Allison and Cassandra Wen, helped us grow this event in the early years. We held our first two events at churches, and then we moved to Safari Texas for our 3rd Empty Bowls. A few years ago, we moved to another venue when it got even bigger. Safari Texas remained very generous. They bought sponsorships and provided live auction items. This year, Safari Texas has graciously taken on the role of Empty Bowls Presenting Sponsor,

and will provide all of the appetizers, soups, and desserts. Last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic, so our goal this year is to raise more money than ever before.” As it happens, Allison and Cassandra Wen are neighbors with Tiffany and Jeff Sebastian, owners of Classic Chevy Sugar Land and HWY 6. Jeff says, “At Safari Texas, Allison has created a beautiful venue, and he’s done so much to help EFBHNM, an organization whose sole purpose is helping people. Tiffany and I have invited a family that was positively impacted by EFBHNM to sit at our Empty Bowls table. This family of seven lost their home in a fire. EFBHNM helped them out as they worked through the tragedy. Their story, along with others impacted over the past year, will be shared at Empty Bowls. It’s sure to be an amazing night that fills our hearts with gratitude for all of the work being done in our

We built the first ballroom in 2000. We’ve continued to expand, creating unique spaces to host memorable events. And the animals? They still roam freely on the property!” Allison is known throughout the community for his generosity in supporting nonprofits, school events, and more. ore than 20 years ago, Carol Grajewski worked with local Lone Star Floors to put in new first floor flooring and granite bathroom countertops. “They did a fabulous job,” says Carol. “So when we recently retired and decided to ‘rebuild’ our house, we called Lone Star Floors again.” Why? “We work with Ziad Mukhaimer at Lone Star Floors,” continues Carol. “Ziad is the absolute best. Our recent remodel included upstairs carpet, downstairs luxury vinyl, the kitchen, entryway, and baths. It changed the look of the home! Ziad helped us select a blended-shade carpet for the upstairs that doesn’t show everything that lands on it. They retiled the upstairs bath, and added some bling around the borders. It’s the guest and kids bath, but it’s my favorite room in the house. When they put the granite in the kitchen, they cleaned the cabinets to make them look like new. We didn’t replace the shower in the master bathroom, and they were able to clean it up, removing the hard water stains. Ziad does everything he can to make you happy. He wants the project to be complete and look good. He hung towel racks for me and changed showerheads. I had ordered a new kitchen fridge, so when they were putting in the new kitchen flooring, the crews moved the old one to the garage and set it up for me out there. They just do extra, and I really appreciate that.” “Everything looks fabulous,” says Carol. “I have a brand new house! I would recommend Lone Star Floors again and again. They have skill, talent, and they’ve been doing this forever. There is never nickel and diming. Everything is included in the proposed cost. My next project with Lone Star Floors is to change my master shower and jacuzzi bathtub into a single, giant shower.” Lone Star Floors was opened more than 30 years ago by Ziad and his cousins, Mohamed Naser and Imad Mansour. In addition to highquality flooring, the company does full kitchen and bath remodeling. Visit one of the three showrooms today!

lite Real Estate Services is a full-service boutique brokerage founded by Jami Bertrand. The mission at Elite is to always provide an exceptional client experience...and the man behind the scenes is Jami’s husband and business partner, Julius Bertrand. “I’ve been here since the beginning,” says Julius. “Before the beginning! Way back when Jami worked for a big box brokerage, it was frustrating to watch her do all the work and then give 50-60% of the money away. We knew Jami needed to do her own thing.” The rest is history. In 2014, Julius and Jami opened Elite Real Estate Services with three agents. “We had to decide back then if we wanted to franchise or start from scratch,” continues Julius. “A franchise costs a lot more upfront, but it’s all set up for you. To start from scratch, it was just us: processes, policies, procedures, documents, marketing plans...all of it. We were up for the challenge. Jami and I did it all inhouse with our own ideas. I take care of the finances, marketing, and design. I’m the behind-the-scenes guy supporting our staff. Jami and I believe it’s important to accommodate the needs of our agents. We offer multiple, flexible commission splits, and we’re investor-friendly. Our training staff is one of the best. We help agents grow and build a successful business. Jami and I are both available 24/7. Our staff has direct contact with their broker at any time. Same

thing if they need marketing ideas or any other support. They just text, email, or call me, and I have something back to them in a few hours. We’re also a very familyfriendly business. Jami and I have three children, and on any given day you’ll find them hanging out at the office doing homework.” “We are branching out,” continues Julius. “Jami and I are taking Elite Real Estate Services to the next level. Right now, we’re expanding to California, and we’ve launched a sister company, Noelle Luxury Homes. Our vision? Where we take this is unlimited!” Elite Real Estate Services 800-952-4998 7070 Knights Court, Suite 202 Missouri City, Texas 77459 www.texaseliteliving.com

ort Bend Psychological Association (FBPA) was founded in the 1990s to promote psychology as a science and as a profession, to promote human welfare and mental health, and to provide a basis for professional growth and social interaction among area psychologists and other mental health professionals. Outgoing President Dr. Linda Jackson says, “I’ve been a member for more than 20 years. We are a group of around 40 psychologists that support each other and other mental health professionals in Fort Bend. We help each other make appropriate referrals and discuss professional matters. We especially experienced the benefit when COVID hit. We were in the same crisis as our clients, and we supported each other through it. Our member Listserv became an invaluable resource to compare critical information regarding matters like teletherapy options, HIPAA compliance, and insurance reimbursement for teletherapy services.” In addition to actively serving the community as therapists, organizational consultants, public workshop leaders, school psychologists, psychological examiners, support group facilitators, educators, and 16 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2021

Linda says, “I encourage people to follow our Facebook page which is largely geared to the public. Everything we post, we have screened for greater scientific rigor. You’ll find free screening tools for depression and ADHD, NIMH brochures on different mental health conditions, and public mental health events. Some of our most popular articles this past year include The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health, The Psychological Aftermath of Surviving COVID-19, and Rules for Being Friends with an Introvert.” FBPA members receive professional development hours free of charge for attending monthly presentations. FBPA also sponsors two workshops a year. These three-hour workshops involve in-depth presentations on ethics and diversity topics by subject-area experts. The semi-annual workshops are open to all mental health professionals. Current President Dr. Jo Ann Formby says, “I’ve been an FBPA member for three years. I appreciate the quality and frequency of professional development events and the

Owner Scott Mueller says, “I’m a stickler when it comes to fresh, handmade food. Everything, from our chicken tenders on down, is made fresh to order. We are not a frozen to fryer operation. When you order fried catfish, we select a plank, cut it, and fry it right then. Wednesday and Thursday nights are steak night. I pick up the ribeyes from the meat market and cut them myself. Then it’s cooked to your liking, or try it chicken-fried for a flavor that’s out of this world. Wash it down with a drink from our full bar. On weekends, we run two bars--one inside and one outside. That means no wait!” This full-service restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating available. Sunday Fundays at Scotty’s Saloon feature a full brunch menu, and Scotty’s Steakhouse is opening soon. “We converted the end of the original General Store into an eight tabletop steakhouse. It’s fine dining in a building that’s more than 100 years old.” Open Wednesday thru Sunday, not only does Scotty’s boast the freshest food around, it’s also a fantastic venue for the very best in entertainment on the largest stage in Fort Bend County. Scott’s wife and co-owner Dina says, “We have open mic nights, karaoke, and the best of the best in live music. We receive thousands of requests a month to play Scotty’s Saloon, and we are very selective. We’re not just going to throw any old band up there. We feature many genres, and some phenomenal tribute bands. We’re super excited to have just booked a Rod Stewart tribute band coming all the way from Canada!” You

DISHWASHER, MEAT TRIMMER, LEMON SQUEEZER, FOOD TESTER

upita’s Mexican Restaurant was opened 19 years ago by local couple Jaime and Lupe Garcia. Lupe is the mastermind behind this delicious, made-fromscratch food. She started cooking for her family of 11 when she was just a child. Today, those same family recipes still hit the tables day in, day out at Lupita’s. “No one makes food as good as Lupe,” explains Jaime. “She’s picky, and everything has to be just right. I just help out where she tells me to! I’m often washing dishes. But I also trim the meat, squeeze lemons, and cut up lettuce and cheeses. We only use fresh ingredients, so there’s always plenty of prep work for me to do.” Of course, the number one benefit of marrying a woman that can cook is tasting the food! We asked Jaime which dish at Lupita’s Mexican

Restaurant is his absolute favorite. “Our Chile Rellenos are the best,” says Jaime. “I would say the best around, but nobody else serves them...they’re too much work. This a pan-fried poblano pepper filled with picadillo or cheese, and topped with ranchero sauce and monterey cheese. We still use our original recipe from all those years ago. It’s a step-by-step process to make it right, so don’t order Chile Rellenos if you’re in a hurry. It takes about 20 minutes to get them perfect!” No worries though, that gives you time to take advantage of Lupita’s $4 margaritas, served all day/every day for the rest of the summer. Follow Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant on Facebook for details about upcoming Father’s Day specials. And don’t forget Lupita’s catering for all occasions. “We can cater your wedding, your private party, your divorce...

whatever it might be!” laughs Jaime. Catering includes fresh, fabulous fajitas marinated with hand-ground spices delivered to your party and kept hot in chafing dishes. “Thank you all for your support over the years,” says Jaime. “We would not have survived 2020 without our loyal customers. I also want to take this opportunity to let everyone know that we’re adding to the Lupita’s team. If you’re interested in being a part of our kitchen staff or a server, please stop in or give us a call. We would love to meet you!”

“My

first experience with All Cool A/C & Heating made me a customer,” says Sean Bielstein, owner of local Clancy’s Public House. “My second experience made me a customer for life!” Sean’s first experience happened in the heat of summer a few years back. “It was horrible, miserable, and our A/C at home decided to die,” says Sean. “A friend recommended we call All Cool A/C & Heating. They came out to take a look, and unfortunately, it was unrepairable. I needed a new A/C system. After the All Cool technician packed up and was leaving, he told me he would be right back. I thought he left a document at the office that I needed to sign. When he gets back, he has a portable A/C unit for me to use until they install my new A/C system. I was so grateful because not only did they save me money on a hotel, but they saved me even more money because I didn’t have to board my animals until the house was cool again.”

The second experience happened when Bryan Bellamy, owner of All Cool A/C & Heating, stopped into Clancy’s Public House to eat. “I knew they didn’t do commercial work,” says Sean. “But our kitchen was always warm, and our old A/C company said there was nothing wrong. I was just venting to Bryan, but he quickly dispatched a couple of technicians and offered to go up and take a look. They found the problem and restored A/C to the kitchen. Our kitchen staff is very grateful! They also discovered that we were only using half the capacity of the dining room system. Now we’re using every bit of it, and our dining room is the coldest it’s ever been. It’s been a tough year for us with COVID. We’re just trying to survive. Bryan did what he did when he didn’t have to...saving me quite a bit of money. I can’t thank him enough.” “Community helping community,” says Bryan. “Sean is an unsung hero around here. In the aftermath of the Memorial Day flood and again after Harvey, Sean and his team at www.upclosemagazine.com

Local Singer/Songwriter Helps Traumatized Kids by Telling His Story by Amy Sharp

hampions Kids Camp (CKC) was founded in 2001 by Fort Bend County residents, Bill and Kim Nash. The mission of this camp is to nurture children who have survived a traumatic injury, illness, or personal loss, such as the loss of a parent or sibling. Bill says, “Kim and I created this camp to honor our son Billy, who survived childhood leukemia.” At CKC, children between the ages of eight and 12 are able to heal from the emotional scarring they have experienced in their young lives. In the past 20 years, CKC has helped thousands of children move past their trauma, giving them improved self-esteem and social skills, reduced fear and anxiety, higher grades in school, and the tools to become a productive part of our community. The impact of this camp is immeasurable, but the cost is. Champions Kids Camp currently spends in excess of $90,000 a year to rent a facility for a week. Plans are in the works for a new facility near Houston specifically designed for CKC. To this end, Bill has shared his journey as a singer/songwriter in his new autobiography: Saint Sinner Singer. From Bill’s start as one part of a family trio in tiny Pharr, Texas, to an unexpected demo session at Columbia Records in NYC, to missing out on 20 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2021

meeting Garth Brooks because an avocado was calling his name, Bill’s musical journey is an interesting one. Bill says, “I wrote this book to raise visibility and funds for the new Champions Kids Camp facility. It’s been a wild ride, and I hope you enjoy my story. Together, we’ll build a place where thousands of kids can be helped in the years to come.” Champions Kids Camp Board Member Jerry Parks of Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land says, “I’ve known Bill since he was singing in the clubs...nearly 50 years. Bill and Kim have written songs for many artists, including Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton. Diamond Rio recorded their song In God We Still Trust. This camp is the culmination of everything Bill and Kim believe in. For the kids, it’s the experience of a lifetime. Bill’s life story is filled with personal triumph (and some failure), but Champions Kids Camp is his crowning achievement.” Bill’s book, Saint Sinner Singer, is available on Amazon. DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

Taking Care of Little Teeth “Under The Sea”

N

ine years ago, Dr. Faisal M. Khan opened Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental with a simple goal: To make going to the dentist a positive and fun experience for every child. Back then, it was just Dr. Khan and a few surfboard beds in a small, beach-themed office. Today, Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental has grown to 15 surfboard beds (with six more on the way!), three dentists, an oral surgeon, and an anesthesiologist. This team continues to carry out Dr. Khan’s vision at a brand-new, state-of-the-art, aquatic-themed facility. From floor to ceiling, this office is visually appealing for both young and old...and there’s a movie theater to enjoy while you wait. Fish, octopus, turtles, and sharks— plus character favorites like Ariel and Sebastian, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and Moana—colorfully adorn the walls. The surfboard beds are a bright orange and white, and each is complete with a ceiling-mounted TV for the little patient to enjoy while their teeth are taken care of. Of course, there’s more to a pediatric dental office than just the architecture. As a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist and a Fellow in Special Care Dentistry, Dr. Khan is wellcredentialed to take care of all kids, including those with special needs, dental anxiety, or other unique care requirements. He’s joined by Dr. Samer S. Dar, Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik, Dr. Aalia Farukhi, and Dr. Brent Kanar. Pediatric dentistry, laser dental procedures, minor orthodontics, and oral surgeries with admitting privileges at Texas Children’s are all in the scope of what this team can do. Dr. Khan is also an active member of Shriners Hospitals cleft palate team.

Dr. Khan grew up in Detroit. His wife, Sugar Land native Samiha Zakaria, brought him here to Fort Bend County. The couple’s three children, Zayna, Hamza, and Eisa, are an inspiration to Dr. Khan. “I understand the nervousness kids feel (and sometimes parents!) about going to the dentist. Like the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, I recommend to parents that they bring their kids around one year of age. Kids that young rarely have anything wrong, so it’s just fun all around. We spend time educating the parents about their child’s teeth, and the child becomes familiar with our fun office and staff. This alleviates a lot of anxiety, and as parents well know...if your kids enjoy coming to the office, going to the dentist will be easier for everyone!”

ugar Land Rotary Club was chartered back in March of 1986. Charter President, local chiropractor Dr. Steve Harris, says, “Before then, I was a member of Oyster Creek Rotary, the very first club in East Fort Bend County. They asked me to help found the new club to expand Rotary into First Colony and Sugar Land. Strong leadership and service-minded membership has built a great club. We perform community service on an ongoing basis. Our reputation: ‘We don’t know what we can’t do!’” This club can be spotted supporting causes all around Fort Bend County. “One of our biggest achievements,” continues Dr. Harris, “is the Seminary at Darrington prison in Rosharon.” How the seminary came about is quite the story. It all started when Dr. Harris was treating the father of one of Karla Faye Tucker’s victims. “I gave him a Bible,” says Dr. Harris. “Years later, his son Ron Carlton read that Bible and turned to Jesus. Ron then famously visited Karla Faye Tucker in prison and forgave her.” In the short film, The Story of

Karla Faye Tucker, Dr. Harris’s part in this most unlikely of circumstances is mentioned. “The film is very popular in prison units. So when they were trying to build the seminary at Darrington, I received a call. They needed to raise more than $2 million. The Sugar Land Rotary members took that challenge on, and through our members and their contacts, we found the money needed. Like I said, we don’t know what we can’t do. This is the first seminary building in a prison in the world.” Sugar Land Rotary would like to extend a huge congratulations and thank you to outgoing President, Todd Breton. Todd was named President of the Year for Rotary District 5890. “It’s been a difficult year with COVID,” says Dr. Harris. “But Rotary still did something every month, and Todd did an outstanding job as President. iz Dewey was involved in a car accident when she was 20 years old. “I hit the windshield,” says Liz. “I didn’t know I was injured...I was actually more worried about the windshield and what my parents would say than I was about myself!” When Liz’s son Alex was born a few years later, she found him hard to carry in the baby carrier. “I was experiencing neck pain that was getting worse over time,” explains Liz. “An orthopedic surgeon told me that I had three bad discs, and surgery for me would be very dangerous. Over the years, I saw several chiropractors. They helped me some, but I experienced the most pain relief when I started to see Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center five years ago. Dr. Harris and Dr. Zack Brazzell have made it their mission to know what really works for people!” Sugar Land Health Center was opened by Dr. Harris in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Brazzell, to the practice. They offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. Liz’s baby Alex is now 20 years old. He was also involved in a really bad car crash around his 18th birthday. “I was taken to the hospital,” says Alex. “But they didn’t see any issues with my back. Two days later, I had back pain. It was hard to sleep, and I couldn’t run, walk fast, or jump. I couldn’t even sit in a chair comfortably. I was extremely worried that my chances of making it into the Marine Corps were in jeopardy.” Alex also sought treatment at Sugar Land Health Center. “My x-ray showed my spine had a huge curve in the middle of my back,” continues Alex. “It was 1.31 inches to the right.
