Fort Bend County

is one of the most diverse counties in the nation. But did you know that local Keller Williams Southwest (KWSW) is just as culturally diverse? Located in the heart of Sugar Land on Highway 6, KWSW real estate agents hail from more than 20 countries and speak 17 different languages...and in this year of unprecedented change and adjustment, KWSW remains committed to protecting and providing what is necessary to keep things moving.

gent Sapana Patel says, “We’ve always been a technological company, but with the global pandemic, we’ve become even more so. It’s created a unique experience for our clients. I recently sold a home in Avalon to a client retiring here from California. We met via FaceBook Live, I showed him the house using FB Live, and I introduced the client to the seller on FB. I had never used FB Live before, and I thought ‘No way!’ would they make a decision this way. But they did!” Video walkthroughs of homes on the market with professional voiceover have also become the norm for homes listed by KWSW. Of course, seeing homes in person is still an option, and KWSW has multiple protocols in place for your safety. “COVID19 wellness screening forms are signed by both buyers and sellers,” says KWSW agent

Sharon Parker. “When I show a house, I carry booties, gloves, hand sanitizer, and masks with me to provide to my clients if needed. I open all doors and turn on all lights...making a house showing as contactless as possible. A nice side effect is people enjoy it; it really makes them feel special!” The current real estate market in Fort Bend County is strong. People are moving here from all over for a variety of reasons. KWSW agent C.W. Ross says, “In many areas, public schools are not an option. That is not the case here. FBISD is one of the leading school districts in the area. With an increased ability to work from home, people from inside the loop are moving here for the schools. We have some well-thought-out communities with public schools, grocery stores, and doctors all within walking distance.” Home affordability

From left to right: Sharon Parker, Mike Day, Pinky Pirani, Aura Pou, Justin Duffield, Cathy Stubbs, Sapana Patel, Aqeel Virk, Mona Parikh, C.W. Ross, Karine D’Souza, Pam Shockey is also a driving factor. Sharon recently sold a home to a retired veteran who moved back here from California, an individual who had never before experienced home ownership. Sharon says, “He’s thrilled to finally own a home in retirement! It was just not possible in California.” KWSW agent Aqeel Virk moved here from Pakistan two years ago. “I discovered this area online,” says Aqeel. “I found Sugar Land to be beautiful, with high-end schools and big

businesses.” Aqeel earned his real estate license in March of 2019, and has been very impressed by the educational culture at KWSW. He says, “The atmosphere here is very good, agents support each other. It doesn’t matter your background... this is a great place to start. The in-house training is amazing. I have a lot of clients that move here from out of state or out of the country. I love that I’m able to share my own story with my clients.” Agent C.W. Ross adds, “I’ve worked at several other agencies. This is also a great

place for seasoned agents. It really gives you a different shot in the arm. It’s about quality, not quantity, and we are a team. Our Top 20 agents are all approachable and willing to share what’s needed to get to the next level. Keller Williams Southwest has the most supportive leadership and technologically advanced tools of any brokerage I’ve been associated with.” For the 527 agents at KWSW, Fort Bend is where their hearts live. ifty-eight-year-old Timmy Wieghat is a farmer and a rancher. He’s a cowboy, he’s done welding in the oil field, and for more than 30 years he’s worked at Damon Farm and Ranch full time. Timmy also has bad knees. He says, “It got to a point, I just couldn’t keep going. I was ready for knee replacements. But two days before my surgery, my surgeon wouldn’t do it. I had a little red bite on my ankle that wasn’t healing. The surgeon told me something was wrong; that we couldn’t do the surgery until we figured out why it wasn’t healing.” Timmy’s wife Jennifer is a nurse. She was also concerned that wounds on Timmy’s lower legs struggled to heal. Jennifer wanted Timmy to see a vein doctor. “A friend told Jennifer that her dad really liked Dr. Ulises Baltazar in Sugar Land...that he’s the real deal. At that first appointment, Dr. Baltazar and I really hit it off. He came in with his cowboy boots and jeans, and I felt welcomed by both him and his staff. I did not feel intimidated.” Dr. Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from vein or lymphatic system issues, and he is a leader in his field. Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a Fellow of the American College of Phlebology and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency.

Ulises Baltazar MD, FACS, RVT

Timmy says, “I’ve always had varicose veins. My legs were black and purple...they looked like the legs of a 90 year old. Dr. Baltazar did an ultrasound, and he told me I had too much blood going down my legs and not enough going up. The blood was pooling where the veins were stretched and bulging. Dr. Baltazar recommended vein ablation and cauterization to close off some of those veins, and reroute the blood back to the heart. We scheduled one upper thigh for one day, and the other for the next day.” After the procedures, Timmy reports that he moves better than he has in years. “I didn’t know my life could be this good again. For 15 years, I couldn’t stand up from a chair without holding on to something. I couldn’t get my legs under me to walk. After riding my horse, I would pay for it for a week. I lived in pain, and circulation was the problem. I now have more agility, and I feel so much better. I’m not aching and hurting. My knees will probably still need to be replaced, but I feel I have time. I think the world of Dr. Baltazar. He gave me new life!”

ife today moves so fast! In this day and age, many of us find it hard to slow down and relax. But you don’t have to go back in time to find that hometown feeling…it’s alive and well at Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land and Classic Chevrolet HWY 6. Tiffany says, “Our motto is ‘Relax and Enjoy the Difference,’ and we take pride in making life easy for our customers. We try to hire good-hearted people, and we’d love for you to come by and check us out.” You’ll love the relaxing vibe at both Classic Chevrolet locations. The sales staff wears jeans and boots in the winter, and shorts in the summer. They’re laid back and friendly, and they genuinely want to make you happy.

Jeff says, “We take pride in the customer experience. Our team always goes above and beyond. We’ve won many awards for our customer service. Most importantly, we’ve been awarded Chevy Dealer of the Year for 10 consecutive years.” What makes a community? Classic Chevy believes it’s more than the place where you live; it’s the people who live there. David Alexander, Fixed Operations Director at Classic Chevy Sugar Land and Classic Chevy HWY 6, says, “Tiffany and Jeff encourage people to belong to organizations like the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Rotary, and other networking clubs to build relationships and reach out. Everything that comes across our desk gets reviewed, and Jeff and Tiffany actively look for ways to support our hometown. That’s the kind of business we want to be…one that gives back!”

Why should business be impersonal? You won’t have to look far to find the face of Classic Chevy here in Sugar Land. Jeff and Tiffany are not only residents of Fort Bend County, they’re also on site at the dealerships every day. Tiffany says, “Our business is as much about people as it is about cars. St. Michael’s Introduces First Female Nurse as CEO by Amy Sharp

S

t. Michael’s Elite Hospital is thrilled to introduce Jessica Rivas as CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and CNO (Chief Nursing Officer). Founder, Dr. Shannon Orsak, says, “We are excited to be the very first hospital in Fort Bend with a female nurse in the CEO position.” Jessica has always loved caring for people. She says, “My grandmother was a nurse in the Navy, and I always enjoyed her stories. I gravitated toward nursing.” In her 24 years experience, Jessica has worked as a floor nurse and a critical care nurse. She holds an MSN in Nursing Administration, and she’s pursuing an

MBA. Most recently, Jessica held the CNO position and then the COO position at a large, Houston-area hospital. “I have always worked in large hospitals,” says Jessica. “I had never done small. When Dr. Orsak and Brian (Orsak, St. Michael’s co-founder) reached out to me about the CEO/CNO position at St. Michael’s, I saw it as an opportunity to help grow and develop the programs they’ve established. As both a nurse and CEO, I can see both sides. It’s important to understand the clinical aspects when making operational and financial decisions. I don’t have just one viewpoint, but the ability and the knowledge to meld the two together.” “The primary goal here at St. Michael’s Elite Hospital is the same as it’s always been,” continues Jessica. “We want to make it as easy as possible for you to get the care you need. We have an emergency room with no wait and fast-tracked service. As a small hospital, we are truly able to tailor the care we are delivering to every individual. I want to make

You shouldn’t have to go to a bank of places to get the care you need.” Since moving to the area, Jessica has run every Houston Marathon with the exception of this year (due to COVID-19). She serves on several boards, and enjoys cooking, baking, and reading. “I am impressed by St. Michael’s deep involvement here in Fort Bend,” adds Jessica. ”It’s important that the people who receive care at St. Michael’s see us out and about in the community...and I’m really looking forward to getting to know all of you!”

ilent nights. Do they exist only in your daydreams? If snoring has driven you or your spouse to sleep on the couch, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. has the solution for you! Snore Guard® is an FDA-approved prescription solution that can bring back silent nights. Dr. Lomonte says, “As a dentist, I’ve seen the way jaw position impacts your airway. The Snore Guard® features Air Flow Technology™ that helps prevent the jaw from receding. The tongue then seeks out an opening between the upper and lower portion of the Snore Guard® instead of dropping back into the throat. The result? The airway stays open, and snoring is greatly reduced.” On the market since 1989, Snore Guard® enjoys a 95% reported success rate for reducing snoring according to the American Sleep Association. Dr. Lomonte says, “Whether you’re the one snoring or the one listening, you’re losing sleep. Fatigue can lead to headaches, concentration problems, hypertension, depression, and cardiac disease. Sleeping pills, earplugs and nose strips are all expensive attempts to treat the surface problem: the noise. But snoring starts with the position of your jaw and tongue at night. Snore Guard® has a proven track record, and it’s approved by the FDA. I want my patients to live long, healthy lives...and Snore

TheSeason of New

Beginnings

I

by Amy Sharp

t’s been one year since most of us really started to feel the effects of the global pandemic. Last month, we endured one of the harshest arctic events ever to hit Fort Bend County. It’s time for spring... the season of new beginnings. Are you ready for a new beginning? I think we all are!

Brian Jackson, owner of local Jackson Air and Heat, says, “This year more than ever, we are looking forward to a fresh start. Soon, the grass will be growing again, and flowers will be blooming...which brings pollen, heat, and humidity. We’ve learned a very important lesson over the past year: IAQ (indoor air quality) is important. Did you know that you have control over the IAQ in your home? Available IAQ products include ultra violet (UV) lights, media filters, Air Scrubbers, and the Trane CleanEffects whole house filtration system. These products remove allergens, dust, and viruses...making the air in your home cleaner, healthier, and

easier to breath.” But what kind of system do I need for the best IAQ? “These IAQ products work best with Trane’s XV variable speed systems,” continues Brian. “Trane was the first in the industry to apply variable speed technology to residential air conditioning. What this means is no more sudden starts and stops at full speed. The variable speed compressor knows exactly when to vary the operating speed as the outdoor temperature changes. Since these systems run longer at a lower speed, when paired with an IAQ product they spend more time cleaning the air in your home. You’ll also experience reduced energy bills with a Trane XV variable speed system.” With spring at our doorstep, summer temperatures are inevitably on the way.

Brian says, “Here at Jackson Air and Heat, we partnered with Trane because they are the best systems on the market. They’re made right here in Tyler, TX by people who understand our Texas weather. If it is time to upgrade your system, or you’re interested in a new Trane XV variable speed system with IAQ products, 0% financing and instant rebates are currently available.” Jackson Air and Heat also reminds everyone to schedule their biannual A/C tune-up before the real heat hits. “Happy spring and new beginnings to all,” says Brian. “Please call us when you need us.” Jackson Air and Heat, Inc. F CUS We Can Help You

by Marie Page

Ask a roomful of men in their 60s whether they have any kind of sexual dysfunction — such as problems with erections, sex drive and overall satisfaction — and about 60 percent should raise their hand, studies suggest. They probably won’t, since the topic is fraught with stigma, shame and fear of rejection, but statistically they are likely to be a part of this unhappy club.

T

here are some things in life that you cannot control. Thanks to technology and medical research, erectile dysfunction will not be one of them. Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects about 30 million men in the United States. If you or someone you love is experiencing this problem, local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy is here to help. Founder Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph says, “Even though ED becomes more common as men get older, growing old is not always the factor! Some lifestyle choices contribute to ED. These include being overweight and not exercising on a regular basis, smoking, heavy drinking, and drug use. Medical research has also uncovered a correlation between ED and diabetes. Men with diabetes are two to three times more likely to have erectile dysfunction. We also know that any condition that affects the way blood flows through the body could lead to ED, including cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and kidney disease.”

Because ED can cause low self-esteem and depression, finding and treating the reason for ED is an important first step in getting back to normal. “Many treatments for ED work well, and they’re safe,” continues Dr. Campbell. “Here at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, we stock commercially-available solutions, and we can also compound custom medications and injectables that enable you and your doctor to find the precise, customized balance of drugs that works best for you. Then we follow up to make sure you’re getting the relief you need with the lowest possible dosage. It’s the real advantage of compounded medications in general: Every individual gets the exact dosage they require, no more and no less.” To learn more about ED treatment options, call Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy to set up a consultation. Dr. Campbell says, “We accept major prescription and insurance plans. Don’t allow erectile dysfunction to derail your life. We can help you!”

Licensed Plumbers Can Help Protect Your Home

I

f you’re reading this, chances are you either experienced a frozen pipe that burst last month, or you know someone who did. Alan Burkhalter, Master Plumber and owner of local Alan’s Plumbing, says, “We received thousands of calls in the days after Fort Bend’s historic arctic event about burst pipes. I wanted to let homeowners know that here in 2021, we have another option. We can repipe all of your supply lines with freeze-damage resistant PEX pipe.” PEX pipe is made from cross-linked HDPE (high density polyethylene). The HDPE is melted and continuously extruded into a tube to form a high-performing pipe. “This pipe will expand if frozen and contract to its original shape when thawed,” continues Alan. “It’s a big improvement over galvanized, copper, and even PVC pipe. While it’s freeze-damage resistant, it is not freeze-proof. The water in the PEX pipe can still freeze and block the flow, putting stress on the pipes. While this stress won’t cause a break or a catastrophic flood in your home, it can weaken the PEX pipes over time, increasing chances of failure and leaks.

For this reason, we use the same standard insulation precautions with PEX pipe as we do with other piping to ward off freezing.”

“ We are licensed to do work in the state of Texas, and we ONLY work in Fort Bend. I know it’s a trying time, and plumbers are busy. But please make sure you have someone working on your home that is licensed in Texas and can be trusted. It’s important!” While frozen pipes are at the forefront of our minds here in Fort Bend County, there are additional advantages to PEX pipe. PEX pipe is clean and rust free. This means it doesn’t corrode, and will not contaminate the water it’s moving and holding. No corrosion also results in an increase in water pressure. And because they do not burst, some insurance companies offer breaks to homes with PEX piping. Alan says, “Here at Alan’s Plumbing, we go the extra mile when we repipe your home with PEX. Every supply line valve is changed, and every toilet is rebuilt. We want nothing to go wrong, and we offer a lifetime

warranty on the materials.” For 25 years and counting, Alan’s Plumbing has been the go-to, honest plumbing company here in Fort Bend. Alan’s brother Chris and his son Luke are also Master Plumbers. His son Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying for his master plumber license, and his son Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. Alan’s wife Jennifer, Luke’s wife Chelsea, and Katie Johnson answer the phones. This crew includes journeyman-licensed plumbers Jeff Johnson and Jaime, and tradesman-licensed Trevor. Alan says, “We are licensed to do work in the state of Texas, and we ONLY work in Fort Bend. I know it’s a trying time, and plumbers are busy. WELCOME DR. Michael

r. Michael Everson is the latest optometrist to join the Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land family. Born and raised in Rockford, Illinois, Dr. Everson grew up wanting to be a surgeon like his dad. Dr. Everson says, “I have some stomach issues, and stress is not my thing... so I realized I had to lean away from the medical field. When I was in high school, I started going with my dad to clay shooting tournaments after a baseball injury.” Dr. Everson went on to become one of the best competitive clay shooters in the nation. As a seven-time All American and three-time Team USA member for the National Sporting Clays Association, he traveled the world shooting.

“Shooting is eye dependent,” continues Dr. Everson. “And I wanted a career that followed in those footsteps; I wanted to do something with the eyes for my entire life.” After receiving his optometry degree in 2019 from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Dr. Everson did an externship at the Eye Centers of South Florida where he focused on retinal pathology, glaucoma and post operative care. Then he landed an internship right here in Sugar Land with Dr. Tom Arnold at Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land. Dr. Everson says, “Dr. Arnold is a wellknown contact lens specialist. I’m a long-time wearer of contact lenses myself, and I took the internship to see if I liked contacts enough to do a residency. Those three months with Dr. Arnold solidified my decision.” Contact lens

residency programs accept only one person per year. Dr. Everson was offered the spot at his top choice: University of Alabama–Birmingham. There he completed a residency with a specialty in contact lenses, soft lenses, and sports vision. Residency completed, Dr. Everson had several job offers that ultimately fell through as the pandemic swept the nation. He left Birmingham and was driving home to Rockford when he got the call: Dr. Arnold had an opening. “I was humbled and proud when Dr. Arnold asked me to join him,” says Dr. Everson. “I never expected him to have an opening. This is a well-run office. Most of the staff and technicians have been here more than 20 years. The patient has a good experience from the moment they walk in the door until the moment they leave, and Dr. Arnold is a really great guy!” At Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land, Dr. Everson specializes in fitting rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses, scleral lenses, and traditional lenses. He performs general eye exams for individuals ages seven and older, and also treats retinal health issues, glaucoma, dry eye, and other eye conditions. HEALTH MATTERS WITH DRS. STEVE HARRIS AND ZACK BRAZZELL, DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

ADDRESSING MY PROBLEM FROM EVERY ANGLE

C

hanel Bermudez is an esthetician and owner of local DermaGlo SkinCare. She says, “For many of my clients, I don’t just treat the face. I treat the back and other parts of the body too. Sometimes, I’m in some pretty awkward positions. My neck was constantly bothering me, and often my back too. I was so sore by the end of the day that I put on frozen neck wraps when I got home. I didn’t want to take ibuprofen every day. It got to a point that I couldn’t look over my shoulder while driving. I remembered that my client Lee Harris’s husband is a chiropractor. I texted Lee and asked for his information.” Lee’s husband, Dr. Steve Harris, opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. They offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. “I’ve seen a few other chiropractors in the past,” says Chanel. “The first difference I noticed at Sugar Land Health Center is they did full x-rays of my entire body, not just my neck. Then Dr. Harris talked me through every little thing that was out of place and presented me with a treatment plan. His office is just five minutes away from my office, and I know his wife...I took it as a message from God that this was the right path for me.” “I felt improvement immediately after starting treatment,” continues Chanel. “Now, three months later, I’m able to see four or five clients in a day, and I go home feeling fine. I used to go home crying if I saw that many clients! What really impresses me about Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell is how they layer on the treatments... just like I do in my esthetician practice. Skin needs more than just sunscreen, and my body required more than just adjustments. It needed decompression, pressure wave, and laser therapy. Dr. Harris also recommended a supplement for cell regeneration, and he offered suggesDr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell

tions to fix my posture at work. He’s now the little angel on my shoulder reminding me how to be effective at work without hurting myself. Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell really addressed my problem from every angle.” “I’ve sent my mother to Sugar Land Health Center and some of my clients,” says Chanel. “They’re great, and their staff is awesome. Everyone is very accommodating and sweet, and they always remember my name. I highly recommend Sugar Land Health Center!”
