Dr. Arnold explains, “Keratoconus is a progressive, non-inflammatory thinning and protrusion of the cornea that always results in astigmatism. shape. The more irregular it is, the harder it becomes to correct the vision or fit contact lenses. Scleral lenses are large-diameter gas permeable contact lenses specially designed to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the ‘white’ of the eye (the sclera). In doing so, the irregular cornea is functionally replaced with a perfectly smooth optical surface to correct vision.” “I’ve worn glasses since I was 11 or 12,” continues Adrian. “I started seeing Dr. Arnold more than 20 years ago, in my early 20s. He was my wife Jacky’s eye doctor. Way back then, I tried my first contacts with Dr. Arnold. We tried lots of different types. We did find a hard contact lens that helped, but definitely not perfect. Then Dr. Arnold recommended I give sclerals a shot, and I’m still happy with them almost 15 years later. Over the years, I have inquired about other options, like laser surgery, when I’ve seen them in the media. I like that Dr. Arnold is very knowledgeable. He let me know these options wouldn’t make my situation with keratoconus that www.upclosemagazine.com

much better. I appreciated his honesty. That kind of trust goes a long way.” “I do recommend Dr. Arnold. Not only do my wife and I see him, he’s the only eye doctor our now adult children have ever known. He fit Joshua and Jonathan in glasses when they were kids, and in contacts during high school. When I walk in, he asks about my family by name. That makes a world of difference to me. He’s great, and his staff is great. I should add that I never wait more than about five minutes when I arrive at his office for an appointment.” In addition to Dr. Arnold, the team of doctors at Memorial Eye Center at Sugar Land includes Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny, Dr. Kristyn Reed and Dr. Joseph A. Janes. Eye exams can be scheduled online at www. memorialeyecenter.com. orraine and Boyd Parker will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this November. Over the course of their marriage they have logged a lot of miles together, lived overseas, raised four children, and welcomed four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. After 21 years of service, Boyd retired from the United States Air Force and the Parkers moved with their children to Stafford in 1972 where they lived until 1989. Retiring to the Canyon Lake area, Lorraine and Boyd eventually took up RVing. Their trips included traveling with some of their siblings and spouses to visit other brothers and sisters across the country. The Parkers found an excellent way to see the country and keep up with their family. Along the way, Lorraine became active with the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center, donating her time and talent sewing quilts and bags for children receiving services. Her quilts were beautiful and well-made; offering comfort and warmth in a time of need. Lorraine estimates that she made a minimum of five quilts a month for seven years. Three years ago, Lorraine and Boyd moved back to Stafford to be closer to their children and their families. Moving did not stop Lorraine’s love for quilting. With a real eye for color and a joy for creating, Lorraine continues to keep busy making quilts and bags for friends and family. Before moving back to Stafford, Lorraine’s biggest concern was having to change doctors. With a history of blood clots and a diagnosis of chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT), Lorraine wanted to be sure she would receive the same level of care that she had received in the past. After a referral to see Dr. Ulises Baltazar, Lorraine’s fears disappeared. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Lorraine says, “As soon as he walked in the room, I felt so at ease. And when he said, ‘I’ll take good care of you,’ I believed him. Dr. Baltazar is the only doctor who has ever prayed with me before surgery. That meant a lot to me.” Dr. Baltazar was able to help Lorraine manage her cellulitis and improve circulation in her left leg, sometimes even coordinating treatment plans with her other specialists in the area. With Dr. Baltazar on her team, Lorraine knew she really had come home.

Let’s Learn More About DENTAL IMPLANTS

A permanent solution for your missing tooth

n recent years, dental implants have become a very popular alternative to traditional implants and bridges. Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in Stafford says, “Once you have a missing tooth, your other teeth will start to gravitate to the open areas to fill the gap...which leads to a domino effect and misalignment. With a success rate of over 95%, dental implants are an excellent choice for replacing your missing teeth.” A dental implant consists of three separate parts: the body, the abutment, and the porcelain crown. Dr. Lomonte explains, “The body is the implant itself. It’s a titanium screw that goes into the jaw bone to replace the root of your tooth. Titanium is used for dental implants because it’s lightweight and extremely durable. It’s also biocompatible, which means that it’s very rarely rejected by the human body. After the titanium implant is placed in the jaw, it takes about Come in three months for the bone to grow to the implant. This a sturdy platform that can support a prosthetic as a patient creates tooth or teeth.” and leave Once the implant has fully stabilized, the abutment is put into place. “The abutment is the toothlike as a friend! connector between the implant post and your new crown,” continues Dr. Lomonte. “In most cases, we can place a false crown until the permanent crown is fabricated. Your permanent crown is then glued in. We 8 ~ UPCLOSE ~ August 2020

can do single tooth crowns, or up to three unit bridges to replace consecutive missing teeth on a single implant.” Dental implants are a great option if you’re missing teeth. “But they aren’t the only option,” says Dr. Lomonte. “We have many different ways to replace teeth: permanent bridgework, partial dentures, and dentures that are connected to implants. They can be permanently screwed in or snapped in. Come in and let us check your teeth and gums. We’ll see what works for you!” To learn more about dental implants, watch Dr. Lomonte’s video at www.drthomaslomonte.com/dental-services/restorations/implants.

Nonsurgical Sciatica Relief

ast December, Jonathan started experiencing pain in his lower back. “It was extreme pain, like I have never experienced before,” says Jonathan. “It hurt to move, it hurt to get up, it hurt to lay down. Every movement shot pain down my left leg. Family members who are physical therapists showed me some stretches to try, but it wasn’t getting much better. The pain was so intense, I wanted to skip the steroid step and have surgery.” Then a family friend recommended Dr. Ugochi Azuike with Texas Interventional Orthopedics and Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Azuike uses your own body—platelets and stem cells—to heal and repair musculoskeletal and spinal issues without surgery. Jonathan says, “I decided to give it a try. At my consultation, I found Dr. Azuike is very easy to talk to, and I did not feel rushed. I described what was happening, and she knew it was a pinched sciatic nerve...which she confirmed with a thorough examination and an MRI.” Dr. Azuike recommended a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection for Jonathan. “A PRP injection requires only a blood draw,” says Dr. Azuike. “Then our on-site lab processes the sample to the right concentration of cells, and we inject the injury using live x-ray (fluoroscopy) and/or ultrasound for precise placement. We never inject blindly. For injuries where we determine stem cells are the better treatment, we draw bone marrow from the pelvis. The rest of the stem cell procedure works exactly the same as PRP.” Jonathan says, “I expected the pain to gradually get better, but I experienced instant relief. That was just crazy! After the procedure, Dr. Azuike provided me with a phased exercise schedule that included restricted exercises and therapeutic exercises. I had the injection done the first week in January, and I still feel great. We plan to do a followup MRI in six to eight months to see where we are. I do recommend Dr. Azuike!”

reative Consumer Research (CCR), located right here in Stafford, has a more than 40 year history of taking care of its clients, its respondents, and its employees. President Patricia Pratt says, “Our purpose is to provide excellent marketing research services to clients in both the public and private sectors. We do this locally, across the state, nationally, and internationally...and we’re still doing it and doing it safely, through the pandemic.” Research projects at CCR are conducted through focus groups, phone interviews, product tests, and more. “We do a lot of product placement tests, taste tests, sniff tests, and usage tests,” continues Patricia. “That has not changed. We’re allowing respondents to drive up and we bring the product out to the car. They take the product home, test it, and then fill out the research survey online. We are doing sniff tests and taste tests ‘curbside.’ We are conducting focus groups via Zoom and in person. We own this

by Amy Sharp building, and we have complete control over sanitizing it thoroughly. For in-person focus groups or product placements, we bring in six to eight people at a time through a designated entry door. We keep them socially distanced as the research is conducted, and then they leave through a designated exit door. The environment is very healthy, and we have had zero issues with illness or virus spread.” These creative ideas and innovations have allowed CCR to not let any employees go. “Everyone is still here, both part time and full time. And we haven’t cut benefits. We have always been here for our employees, and we always will be.” Last month, a large scale research project conducted by CCR was recognized as one of the year’s best qualitative research projects in Houston by the American Marketing Association and awarded the prestigious American Marketing Association Crystal Award for qualitative research. Patricia says, “We are proud of the work we’ve done, and we have lots of projects in the pipeline.

So we need lots of respondents. If you’re open to giving your opinion, go online and register. Anyone over 18 can participate. The criteria for every study is different, so the more people we have in our database the better. If you fit the criteria for a study, we will contact you and see if you’re available. We always compensate for your time. In addition to the multitude of projects we are conducting locally, we have others going on around the country. If you know someone in another city or state that might be interested, encourage them to register as well!” This opportunity is completely confidential. It’s a very chill, full-service restaurant and bar serving up a fusion of Baja-Mediterranean (Cabo’s best!) and Tex-Mex right here in Missouri City. Juan is an executive chef at a private resort in Cabo San Jose. Heather says, “These are fun food items, and there’s something for everyone. A Complete New Bathroom by Their Trusted Flooring Store by Amy Sharp

ugh and Elaine Burton’s home was built in 2003. When they decided it was time to remodel their master bathroom, they called locallyowned Lone Star Floors. “Lone Star Floors has been around a number of years,” says Hugh. “And we had used them in the past for flooring. We were completely satisfied. I also have friends who have used them as well as our adult children. Everyone has been happy with them. I understood that they also do bathroom remodeling, so I called to inquire. They came out to talk, gave an estimate, and we went with them based on our past experience.” The Burton’s bathroom remodel included a new shower and tub, new vanities, flooring and light fixtures. “The only thing that stayed was the medicine cabinet!” says Hugh. “Ziad Mukhaimer, one of the owners, was our project manager. He helped quite a bit with showing us materials and making sure everything coordinated. We went with tile that looks like wood, white vanities, and white patterned tile in the bath and shower with beige and gray accents. Ziad also accompanied us to Home Depot to pick faucets, etc.” During construction, Elaine and Hugh moved to a back bedroom. “Our crew was very professional and here when they said they would be here. They were particular about cleaning up and the time estimate was pretty well right on. When we wanted to use our own painter—a company that had painted for us in the past—Lone Star Floors had no problem with that and worked to coordinate schedules to get the bathroom done. We are very happy with our finished bathroom. It looks really nice and all of our friends rave about it. I do recommend Lone Star Floors!” Ziad owns Lone Star Floors together with his cousins Mohamed Naser and Imad Mansour. This trio opened their first location right here in Sugar Land more than 30 years ago. As Hugh discovered, in addition to flooring they also do full bathroom and kitchen remodeling. leanliness. It’s certainly on everyone’s mind these days. You might feel the need to disinfect as often as possible. Maybe you’ve even thought of having your home professionally cleaned...but you’re just not sure. Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services, locally owned by Imelda Mahoney and her daughter Casandra, understands these concerns. Casandra says, “Because the safety of both our clients and our employees is of the utmost importance, we’ve instituted additional proactive protocols to help guard against health risks when cleaning your home.” • Staff temperatures checked before the morning shift and the afternoon shift every day. • All cleaning ladies wear masks, disposable gloves and disposable shoe covers. • The professionals that enter your home wash their hands before, during and after a cleaning. • Touchpoints around the home are wiped down, including light switches, remotes, door knobs, faucets and knobs. • Mahoney’s will also use your personal vacuum, mop, broom and/or cleaning supplies to clean your home if you prefer. If you do decide to allow Mahoney’s to use their own equipment, you can rest assured they are spraying vacuums down with MicroBan and wiping everything down with Clorox. Bonded and insured, Mahoney’s is available to take care of your home on the schedule of your choosing. Weekly, biweekly, monthly, or a one-time deep cleaning...whatever works for you and your family. We Take Your Safety Seriously

—and It Shows

ou may not realize it, but there’s a war being waged right inside your attic—a war between water and electricity. “These are two things that must be left in the hands of a professional,” says Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing. “Dealing with water and electricity is extremely dangerous, which is why for leaks, problems and inspections, you need a highly-trained, highly-skilled professional plumber...not someone who just ‘does plumbing’ on the side.” “Your air conditioner’s condensate line is a good example. Condensate (liquid waste) from your air-cooling coils, air washers, evaporative coolers—any water-supplied equipment—is actually a plumbing (not an HVAC) matter. This liquid has to be collected and discharged using an approved plumbing fixture made of corrosion-resistant material. The waste pipe has to slope less than 1/8th of an inch per foot and then directed away from the house per wastewater codes. This is not a job for someone who doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing. And if one of these lines springs a leak, it can be catastrophic. Not only will your house flood, but you’ll have water and electricity loose upstairs.” The potential hazards don’t stop there. The foundation of your house is full of pipes—pipes that bend and contract as the soil around your foundation dries out over the summer. Spring a leak and the dial on your water meter will start spinning like a pinwheel, which means skyhigh water bills. Fortunately, Alan Burkhalter, his brother Chris, and Alan’s son Luke are all Master Plumbers. Luke’s brother Beau is currently journeyman-licensed and close to achieving his Master Plumber license as well. Long-time employee Jeff Johnson is also journeyman-licensed, and apprentices Jake Burkhalter, Jaime, Christian and Trevor are working toward their journeyman licenses. in a technologically complicated business where one wrong move can put an entire household in jeopardy. “I’ve actually seen condensate lines left to drain in handyman buckets in people’s attics,” says Alan. “Your family’s safety is our first priority, along with saving you the most amount of money and making sure we do the best job possible. We’re not a nameless, faceless national corporation. We’re a family business that honors and respects family. Yours and mine. We wouldn’t be the multi-generational family-owned business we are without giving you our best.” “Give us a call! We’ll show you what family means.”

hat makes a group of people get up early on Wednesdays to meet for breakfast every week? “It’s all about the kids!” says Exchange Club of Sugar Land President Paul Barnett. Exchange Club of Sugar Land sponsors events, raises money, and volunteers to support other area organizations committed to the prevention of child abuse. “Like everyone else, we are currently meeting via Zoom because of COVID,” continues Paul. “But we haven’t lost sight of our purpose. Our members are still out there, planning projects that help make Fort Bend County a better place to live.” Just one example in a myriad of many, during the July 8th Zoom meeting Exchange Club of Sugar Land donated $1000 to Champions Kids Camp. This weeklong camp is dedicated to the nurturing of children who have survived a traumatic injury, illness, or personal loss, such as the loss of a parent or sibling. Founder Bill Nash was present at the Zoom meeting to accept the donation. Bill said, “God bless Fort Bend County and the Exchange Club of Sugar Land for showing the heart of God in how you care about people.” Bill went on to explain that he was leaving for camp the next day, but needed to pick up pillows and blankets first for kids that may not have the means to bring their own. ll Cool A/C & Heating owner Bryan Bellamy knows that having someone you can rely on to keep your home comfortable is important. “We understand concerns regarding COVID-19, and the challenges faced by many of you, both personally and professionally,” says Bryan. “Here at All Cool, we are committed to this community, and to keeping our business open during these unstable times. That includes implementing safety protocols to keep both our customers and our employees safe.” • All Cool employees are aware of and provided with the necessary materials to follow CDC guidelines related to COVID-19. • Technicians apply hand sanitizer before entering your home and after leaving. • When scheduling an appointment and again upon arrival, All Cool confirms that no one in the home is feeling ill or quarantined due to COVID-19. • Disposable gloves, masks, and shoe covers are worn while work is performed. • All Cool employees and technicians practice social distancing in your home or business and at the All Cool offices.

• Don’t be alarmed when All Cool’s usual friendly handshake is replaced with a wave, and you aren’t asked for a signature on electronic tablets and paper invoices. “We are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe!” For additional protection against indoor air pollutants, All Cool offers ultraviolet sanitizing systems and whole home filtration systems that promote good indoor air quality. Bryan says, “The Air Scrubber by Aerus with Active Pure Technology was created in cooperation by NASA to help provide clean air aboard the International Space Station. It has proven effective in removing some viruses from the home, including the H1N1 (swine flu) and the influenza virus H5N8 (avian-bird flu). The Air Scrubber purifies the air and reduces particles that can irritate allergies and asthma. It’s low maintenance, and there’s no cleaning required. I have one in my own home. I have horrible allergies myself, and man...this thing works!” Family-owned and operated, All Cool A/C & Heating has been serving the Fort Bend area since 1989. “We’re here to help however we can,” says Bryan. “Whatever you need, or if you just have a question, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

I CAME IN FOR ONE THING AND THEY HELPED ME WITH SO MUCH MORE!

K

by Sara Adams

ent Nutt and his twin brother have owned and operated an oil field supply company for 40 years. Its success is due to their commitment and hands-on approach when in the field with their team. Kent admits that he has been pretty rough on his body during this time, and now that he is in his early 60s, he’s paying the price. Trying to explain the wear and tear his body has experienced through the years, Kent says, “My wife Katrina calls me a human forklift.” When the pain in his right hand was so bad that Kent thought he would have to have carpal tunnel surgery to fix it, Katrina suggested he see her chiropractors at Sugar Land Health Center. Kent says, “Katrina really believes in Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell. I’ve been to chiropractors before, but they are very different…and that’s a good thing!” “I started working with Drs. Harris & Brazzell in December. I originally went to see them about my right hand, but while I was there, I asked them to work on my elbow as well...they fixed that too! After only six or seven treatments, we were done. It’s amazing what they can do. For seven or eight years, I had been getting shots in my elbow every time it would flare up. My doctor had told me I couldn’t keep getting the shots, that I would have to do something about it. After seeing Drs. Harris & Brazzell, the pain is gone.” Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982. In April of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. They offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. Through his 40 plus years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. Determined not to go through his 60s with more aches and pains than he has to, Kent is turning to Dr. Harris and Dr. Brazzell again for help with the pain in his right shoulder and the heel of his left foot. Kent says, “I put up with aches and Dr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell
