e want you to be comfortable and confident when you come to us to buy or service a car,” say Tiffany and Jeff Sebastian, local owners of Classic Chevy Sugar Land and Classic Chevy HWY 6. “That’s why we’ve followed CDC guidelines and taken extra safety precautions to protect both you and our staff.” At both Classic Chevy locations, a cleaning crew is on-site every day constantly wiping down surfaces, including chairs, doors and handles. Hand sanitizer kiosks are located all over, and they try to have masks available as well. Classic Chevy has also installed plexiglass sneeze guards around every desk. “This allows full, face-to-face communication with staff members while protecting both parties.” From sales all the way back to service, social distance guidelines are observed. Knowing What

by Sara Adams

L

For

ong before anyone had ever heard of HGTV...when people still thought that if someone said “flipping,” they were talking about pancakes, Connee Blake was taking the advice of her real estate agent about houses in her area. Connee and her husband moved to Houston over 30 years ago. The agent they used when they bought their home recognized Connee’s talent for bringing new life to deserving houses. Although it took a little convincing for Connee to consider buying additional property, she said once she got another house and fixed it up, everything seemed to fall into place. With her own business experience, innate talent, and an exceptionally good real estate agent, Connee just knew what she was looking for. The same can be said about Connee’s approach to finding a vein specialist to work on her varicose veins. In her 40s, Connee had some work done on spider veins and was not happy with the procedure or the results. Now in her 70s, she knew that if she was going to seek treatment for her varicose veins, it was important to work with a cardiovascular surgeon. When she consulted her family doctor, he recommended Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly-regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Flipping houses and maintaining rental property for over 30 years has kept Connee on her feet for some time. She feels like her long hours may have contributed to her varicose veins. She remembered that her mother had to have her veins stripped. Connee was concerned about the procedure, and was even more determined to find a cardiovascular surgeon she could trust. “I liked Dr. Baltazar immediately,” says Connee. “He and his staff are very nice. He told me what would happen, and that’s exactly what happened. There was little pain, and I had a speedy recovery.” When making decisions, Connee has learned you have to know what to look for. She says, “If anyone is considering having work done on their varicose veins, they should not put it off. I have recommended Dr. Baltazar to my friends. He is wonderful and very caring. The whole experience was good.”

Community Donates Vital PPE to St. Michael’s by Amy Sharp

O

n April 24th, the “Together, We Are Stronger” coalition donated 2000 disposable masks, 1000 N95 masks and 100 sets of goggles to St. Michael’s Elite Hospital here in Sugar Land. Launched in March 2020, the purpose of this coalition is to help hospitals, police departments, fire departments, veterans, senior citizens and other critical service communities in the Greater Houston Areas who are most impacted by the COVID-19 virus. Four of the more than 20 coalition members attended this event: the J.J. Clemence volunteer team, Houston Tsinghua Alumni Association, Chinese American Civic Action Alliance, and Huaxing Arts Education Center/OAEC. J.J. Clemence said, “Every small step we make together makes big changes. As Americans, together we are stronger.” No one understands this more than the team at St. Michael’s. For more than a decade, St. Michael’s has remained dedicated to the betterment of our

community. Co-founder Dr. Shannon Orsak said, “It takes the community to take care of the community. We’ve reached out to suppliers and have seen supplies gobbled up. We’ve seen price gouging: 3¢ masks selling for $10. St. Michael’s has seen zero of the $300 million given to small businesses.” St. Michael’s CEO Don Vickers adds, “These PPE (personal protective equipment) donations are vital to the care we provide. Thank you to the coalition.” Present at the time of the donation, Congressman Pete Olson added, “I have known both Dr. Shannon Orsak and J.J. Clemence for more than a decade. Both have spent their lives helping others. Thank you, thank you, thank you for stepping up when we needed people. On behalf of the largest and most diverse congressional district in Texas, I’m honored to award St. Michael’s Elite Hospital the Certificate of Congressional Recognition. Together, we will continue to stand and fight.” St. Michael’s Elite Hospital offers security and safety in a smaller, controlled, amazingly clean and comfortable environment, with little to no wait. This hospital tests and treats Sugar Land and Fort Bend County for all medical problems, including COVID-19 and an antibody test for COVID-19 exposure. We Are Here When You Need Us… I

by Amy Sharp

t’s been more than 20 years since Alan Burkalter, Master Plumber and owner of local Alan’s Plumbing, first started allowing his three sons to ride the truck with him. “They weren’t even ten years old yet,” says Alan. “But I wanted Beau, Luke and Jake to understand and see for themselves core values like hard work, honesty, and the skills of a trade.” Today, Alan’s sons work right alongside Alan. Luke is also a Master Plumber. Beau is journeyman licensed, and Jake (engaged to Becca Long!) is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. Together with Alan’s brother, Master Plumber Chris Burkhalter, this is two generations of brothers working together for the families of Fort Bend. What does this mean for you? As a family-owned and operated company, they keep their overhead low and pass those savings on to you. They won’t feed you some line to get through

your front door. If Alan’s taught his sons anything, it’s how to earn your business the old-fashioned way...by giving the best price on the good work they do. Alan says, “We’ve seen every kind of fixture known to man, and we’ve installed them too. We have real-world expertise with all sorts of plumbing jobs, projects and issues.” • Repiping Services • Hot Water Heaters • Plumbing Repair • Garbage Disposals • Gas Line Repair • Plumbing Inspection • Showers & Tubs • Bathroom Remodeling • Plumbing Installation When you call, Alan’s wife Jennifer or Luke’s wife Chelsea answers the phone. This

honest team is completed by team members that may not be blood, but they’re Burkhalter family nevertheless. Jeff Johnson also holds a journeyman license. Katie Johnson helps in making sure every call is met with a friendly voice. Apprentices Jaime, Trevor and Christian make this the best-trained team to tackle emergencies and nonemergencies alike in our neighborhood. “We aren’t here to upsell you or maximize profits,” says Alan. “We’re here to make sure your house is as safe and secure for your family as you need it to be. Always have been. Always will be. Generation after generation.”

“Behind EVERY small business, there’s a

T

he story behind local Jackson Air and Heat begins in 1939, when Johnny Jackson was born in rural northeastern Oklahoma. His son Brian, owner of Jackson Air and Heat, says, “Dad was one of 12 kids. He grew up in a poor family. When he was in high school, he would hitchhike to Kansas and Nebraska during the summer to help the farmers with their crops. He used the money he made to buy school clothes. As an adult, he first joined the Air Force. Then he joined National Cash Register, the job that brought our family to Sugar Land in 1977. We thought it would be for a couple of years...but here we are!” After 20 years with NCR, a friend helped Johnny get started in air conditioning—a luxury he could have never imagined in rural Oklahoma. Brian says, “Dad started his company in 1982, mostly working with real estate agents. After a home inspection, he would fix whatever needed to be fixed, including the A/C. Back then, the company was called Jumpin’ Johnny’s. I worked with Dad on weekends, and after

graduation I started working with him full time. It was just the two of us, and around 1986 we rebranded to Jackson Air and Heat; exclusively working on A/C and heating systems.” Seventeen years ago, Brian bought the company from his dad. Johnny remained a friendly face among Jackson Air and Heat customers until his unexpected passing in 2018. Today, both of Brian’s sons, Brian and Blake, along with his grandson Jordan are part of the team. Jackson Air and Heat is the oldest independent Trane dealer in Sugar Land and enjoys an unprecedented reputation for honesty and outstanding customer service. Brian says, “Treating customers like they are a part of our family has always been our highest priority. Right now, I get a lot of questions about clean air. Here at Jackson Air and Heat, we offer Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) products for the home, including ultra violet (UV) lights, Air Scrubbers and the CleanEffects whole house filtration system to remove allergens, dust and viruses. These all work best with the Trane variable

speed systems. These are systems that run longer at a low speed, which is better for filtration and removing humidity. I have one in my own home! Right now, Trane is offering 0% financing and rebates. Pair that with generous Centerpoint rebates, and it’s a great time to upgrade your system.” For nearly 40 years, customers have depended on Jackson Air and Heat for honest, trustworthy air conditioning and heating service. LOYALTY DURING THE CRISIS

Cleaning Through COVID-19

L

by Amy Sharp

ike many small businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on house cleaning providers. Local Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services, co-owned by Imelda Mahoney and her daughter Casandra, wants to say thank you to this community for working with them through the crisis. Casandra says, “We’ve had clients who wanted to support us and the staff during this time, so they would send payments to us regardless of whether or not we came to clean. We were especially grateful because we used that money to directly assist our staff. Even when they couldn’t work a full week, we were able to help them with their groceries, expenses etc.” For clients that do decide to have their homes cleaned, Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services has a number of proactive policies in place to help guard against health risks. Casandra explains, “We are checking temperatures for all of our staff each morning and in the afternoon when they arrive. Everyone has been feeling well and has been able to continue working. Our ladies wear masks, disposable gloves and disposable shoe covers. They wash their hands before, during and after cleaning. We are also wiping down touch points around the home, including light switches, remotes, door knobs, faucets and knobs.” Mahoney’s will also use your personal vacuum, mop, broom and/or cleaning supplies to clean your home if you prefer. However, if you do decide to allow Mahoney’s to use their own equipment, you can rest assured they are spraying vacuums down with MicroBan and wiping everything down with Clorox. “We understand that cleanliness is on everyone’s mind these days,” says Casandra. “The health and safety of your family and our staff are of the utmost importance to us. Please let us know how we can help you.”

Family. Quality. Experience.

by Amy Sharp

ay back in 1995, cousins Ziad Mukhaimer, Mohamed Naser and Imad Mansour opened Lone Star Floors with one goal in mind: To give the best quality and experience possible. “What that means,” says Mohamed, “is that we treat everyone that walks through these doors like family. When you work with us, you’re never just a number. It’s the same with our employees. Many have been with us since the beginning. Part of our family.” And quality? Everything at Lone Star Floors is by the book. “We install every floor we sell according to the manufacturer’s instructions,” explains Mohamed. “There’s no cutting corners, no shortchanging on materials, and job preparation is done correctly. Should you have a problem, give us a call and we handle it immediately. Ziad and Imad both worked as installers for ten years prior to opening our stores. They understand both sides of the fence.” This family-owned and operated business has enjoyed an A+ rating with the BBB every year since its inception 25 years ago. More than 75% of their business is referrals and repeats. Not only is it family-owned, it’s where Ziad, Imad and Mohamed raised their own families. “Between us we have 12 children,” says Mohamed. “We used to play games in the stores, like go count the red floor samples. They would spend hours doing it, and they would laugh at the silliest things. Now the kids are grown up, and the grandkids are playing those same games. It’s been a blessing to raise multiple generations both in our stores and in this wonderful community.” In addition to flooring, Lone Star Floors does full kitchen and bathroom remodeling—including plumbing, shower glass, painting and granite. Where Baja-Mediterranean Meets

Bring the Family and the Dog!

W

by Amy Sharp

ith all the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, by July you might be ready for a trip to Cabo. While the jury’s out on whether travel will be allowed by then, we do have great news: The taste of Cabo is coming to us! Cabo Dogs—a very chill, full-service restaurant and bar serving up a Baja-Mediterranean (Cabo’s best!) and Tex-Mex fusion—is opening right here in Missouri City. Why Cabo? The idea started to take shape years ago, when co-founder Heather Pratt’s parents bought a vacation home in Cabo. “We spent family vacations there, and Cabo quickly became Our food is a our second home,” says Heather. “Some of fusion of Cabo’s best,

Baja-Mediterranean, and Tex-Mex.

my best memories occurred there, so I wanted to bring a piece of Cabo to my first home.” Heather is a culinary graduate of the Art Institute of Houston. To create Cabo Dog’s exciting menu items, she enlisted the help of her mentor and friend, Chef Juan Emir from Cabo. “These are fun food items, and there’s something for everyone,” says Heather. “Our mix and match tacos include choices like shrimp, fish and short ribs. Fresh ceviche makes me long for the lazy days at the beach, so I decided to serve four different kinds! We have axis deer quesadillas, shrimp chorizo, and more. Each unique entree is paired with a mixologistdesigned drink, craft beer and wine. We call it a Midtown feel with a Missouri City price!” Now we know where Cabo comes from...what about Dogs? “Heather and I are proud paw parents!” says co-founder Chris Morris. “We named the specialty drinks here at Cabo Dogs after our dogs, and we want to meet your fur babies too! Our patio is dog friendly, and we’ve partnered with Texas Dog Treats to have all-natural treats for our furry customers. We’ve even trained our staff to watch your dog if you stop in alone and need to slip into the restroom.” Cabo Dogs is the perfect place for families (and dogs!) to gather and eat, do karaoke and listen to bands. After 10pm, it’s 21+ and a late night menu is available. For your safety, Cabo Dogs has partnered with Sugar Land Shuttle Service to provide $5 safe rides home within a five mile radius. “We plan to hit the ground running mid July,” says Heather. “We will be following all social distancing and sanitizing guidelines outlined by the authorities at that time. It’s exciting, and we can’t wait to meet you all!”

We’re all feeling it. In some way, each of our lives has been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Closed restaurants, distance learning in schools, canceled concerts. Perhaps you’ve even experienced a telehealth doctor visit as a direct result of the pandemic. But what happens when it’s over? This opens a lot of questions for the way business is conducted in the future. Do we go back to the old ways, or does a new normal emerge? What do the consumers want?

C

reative Consumer Research (CCR) has been helping companies find these types of answers for more than 42 years. President Patricia Pratt says, “Now more than ever, companies need to know what the people want. What are their perceptions? Continuous learning is essential. It’s vital that businesses understand what customers expect as we move forward. Here at CCR, we conduct more than 1500 market research projects per year. We have the experience necessary to formulate the appropriate questions for optimal consumer insights research. Our sole purpose is providing excellent marketing research services to clients in both the public and private sectors. We

can gather this information through focus groups, online surveys, phone interviews, Zoom meetings, meetings at our office, sending out questions, and more.” However, CCR can only gather this information if people are interested in giving the information. That’s where everyone can participate! CCR is conveniently located right here in Stafford. They invite anyone and everyone age 18 and older to participate in research. Patricia says, “Your fresh thoughts and ideas provide honest insight to our clients. There are no right or wrong answers. Your opinion can and will make a difference in the way our future world looks. The criteria for every study is different, so the more people in our database the better.”

CCR is the most respected public opinion source. You can participate with the assurance that all of your information is stored internally, and your name will never be sold. Built on Trust, Love, Honesty and Integrity by Amy Sharp

“T

here’s no way to pull off a successful business partnership without complete trust and love,” explains BUGCO Pest Control’s John Onofrey. John met BUGCO business partner Chris Millward 15 years ago in a pool league. “I was the team captain, and we needed another player. Chris was the winner. He’s about as good as me. Ok, definitely better!” Chris was going through a hard time. He had lost his brother in Desert Storm. His family then lost his dad, their home and car, and in 2012 Chris lost his mom to cancer. Within his home inspection company, Top 2 Bottom Inspections, John was hearing a repeat request from customers: Why couldn’t he provide pest control too? As it happened, Chris had experience working for a big box pest control company. Chris says, “I despised working there. Cool Kids F

amily-owned All Cool A/C & Heating is growing! Vice President Cody Bellamy recently welcomed his third child. That brings founder and President Bryan Bellamy’s total count of grandkids to four (his son James is also a father). That’s a lot of “Cool Kids” for the All Cool family! Bryan says, “It’s exciting, and our ‘Cool Kid’ count isn’t the only thing that’s growing. Here at All Cool A/C & Heating, we are relocated to a brand new larger building, and we’ve hired additional team members so that we can better serve the community that has helped us grow. We’ve also heard the overwhelming requests to get back into the commercial business, and we are happy to answer that call. It’s official...we’ve relaunched our commercial division. Thank you all!” Of course, it’s not about what you say you do, it’s about what you actually do in the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bryan and All Cool have donated countless hours on the front lines helping both Fort Bend County and the Greater Houston Area. In collaboration with Ray Aguilar of Classic

Chevy Sugar Land and Jimmy Cantu of Pier 36 Seafood, Bryan has delivered food to the ER workers at Oakbend Medical Center in Richmond, with plans to do the same at Houston Methodist Sugar Land and St. Michael’s Elite Hospital. He has also used his All Cool trucks to aid in the organization and distribution of PPE (personal protection equipment) in the Greater Houston Area. Bryan says, “These are supplies provided on behalf of the federal government. We work with Texas EMTF (Emergency Medical Task Force) to pick up these supplies from a distribution point and deliver them to the Houston Academy of Medicine where they are distributed locally. To date, we’ve made five trips and delivered more than 3 million pieces, including masks, gloves, face shields and hand sanitizer.” In business since 1989, at All Cool A/C & Heating it’s all cool all the time. All Cool Comfort Members enjoy twice a year tuneups and service fees are waived. Members also receive a 10% discount on all services, and they are bumped to the front of the line when scheduling an appointment.

SURVIVAL OF A RESTAURANT

W

by Amy Sharp

ith forced closures, advisories to socially distance, and growing concerns about community health, restaurants have been hit hard by COVID-19. We asked Jaime Garcia, owner of local Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant, how restaurants survive this crisis. “Community,” says Jaime. “There is no other answer. Thus far, we have received zero dollars in government money. When the Stay at Home order was first issued, we closed our doors completely. Two weeks later, we decided to open for to-go and curbside orders. The response was overwhelming...we couldn’t keep up with the phone calls. On May 1, we were able to open at 25% capacity. That is only six tables. On May 22, we were allowed 50%. You, our community, have kept us going.” So why is everyone flocking to Lupita’s? For the fresh food of course! Over 17 years, Jaime’s wife Lupe has created and perfected her uniquely fresh recipes. Flour tortillas are soft, freckled and warm to the touch. Black Angus fajitas are bathed in a tart and salty marinade and then dusted with spices that Lupe grinds by hand in the kitchen. “Have It Your Way” stuffed avocados are stuffed

with your choice: beef or chicken fajita, shrimp, or even a beautiful rainbow of fresh veggies. “I’m picky!” explains Lupe. “Everything has to be just right.” L u p i t a’s   M e x i c a n Restaurant was awarded “Best Neighborhood Spot in Sugar Land’’ by the Houston Press, and for several years in a row they’ve earned a spot on food critic Allison Cook’s prestigious Houston Chronicle Top 100. Jaime says, “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you again to Sugar Land, Fort Bend, and even Houston for your continued friendship and support. We’re the ‘little guys,’ and you’re the reason we’re still open. We are so grateful.”

MARGARITAS TO-GO! Lupita’s world-class margaritas are just $4. Enjoy them when you dine in, or take them to-go. You’ll be happy you did!

Celebrating One Year

A

by Amy Sharp

pril 10 marked the one year anniversary of Hair Bar in Sugar Land. Manager Christina Ramirez says, “That day one year ago was filled with lots of uncertainty, a few challenges, and was a bit scary. But our faith kept us fueled with positivity, optimism, and most of all hope. Little did we know, we would experience the same feelings one year later. Due to the COVID-19 virus, our doors were closed on our anniversary, and we were not able to celebrate with all of you. Once again, our faith kept us going. In May, we were able to open with a new normal. We’ve always prided ourselves on cleanliness and a comfortable atmosphere. As we’ve reopened, we’ve taken many additional precautions, including social-distanced chairs and limited appointments. We are all in this together, and will all rise above it together...and we will celebrate our anniversary in style just as soon as it’s safe to do so!” Hair Bar is made up of individual stylists who are all self-employed and super-talented.

Ashley, Meaghan, Kayla and Janet are amazing artists. Besides creating fabulous hair right here in Sugar Land, over the past year this team has worked fashion week in New York City, and collaborated with Celine Dion’s band for their Courage World tour at The Toyota Center. From cuts, color, balayage and highlights to extensions and special event styles, these artists are committed to making sure you are always comfortable, feel pampered, and love your hair! Christina says, “We have appointments available, but we also understand if you are not able to visit us at this time. You can always support these ladies by purchasing a gift card for future use. Senior Living That’s Truly Inspired Beautiful Outdoors Eighty-six-year-old Lesley Sklenicka grew up in New Zealand. “It’s the best country in the world!” says Lesley. “I’ve always loved swimming, and my dad often took us to the beach.” As an adult, Lesley left New Zealand to see the world. She traveled to Europe and then Canada, where she met her husband Venie. “Venie grew up in Czechoslovakia, and was there during WWII. He had a bad heart, and went through a period with no food. He was lucky to get out alive.” The couple settled in California, where they raised two daughters: Karen and Irene. The family spent many summers in Costa Rica. They enjoyed taking the girls camping and backpacking. “I even took them to Switzerland to see the Girl Scout Chalet,” says Lesley, who herself earned the highest award in Girl Scouts: The Gold Award. “I still have my medal!” she adds. For many years, Lesley worked as a draftswoman drafting highway bridges. “It was strange here in the United States,” says Lesley. “I followed in my father’s footsteps, but people often looked at me weird because I was a woman in this position. It was not like this in New Zealand.” Lesley moved to the Houston area to be

near her oldest daughter. Today, she lives in a private apartment at Inspired Living Sugar Land. Lesley’s favorite thing about Inspired Living is the outdoors. “There’s a big patio, with wonderful flowers and a lake,” says Lesley. “We are spoiled...it’s just beautiful. I love the walking path, where I often see turtles, fish and geckos. Each day, I take a morning walk, an evening, and often an extra in between! It’s fun here. Sometimes we get together; sometimes we argue. We’re a family.” Real Bacon Gerald McMath grew up in Shreveport, where he loved the Dallas Cowboys and played high school football. “I was never that good,” says Gerald. “Always on the B team. For one of the final games of my senior year, the coach announced there were five extra uniforms so five guys from the B squad would dress out. I was one of the chosen. But when the time came, there were only four pairs of pants...so I was left out. One of my biggest disappointments in life is that I almost dressed for varsity once but had no pants!” Together with his wife Bobbie, Gerald adopted two children, Dale and Kathryn, from a Southern Baptist group home in New Orleans. Gerald served in the National Guard

from 1947-52, where he was recognized as an expert marksman. For 38 years, Gerald worked as a draftsman with Cities Service Oil Company. He retired from Cities Service in 1985 and moved to Texas to be closer to his children. Today, Gerald also lives in a private apartment at Inspired Living Sugar Land. A Dallas Cowboys wreath marks his door. “I’ve lived in several retirement communities,” says Gerald. “This is the best one. The dining situation is better. I can eat in the dining room any time of day, and they serve REAL BACON. The other places served turkey bacon...and that’s just not the same.” Gerald often dines with a close friend who also lives in an Inspired Living apartment. On June 12, Gerald will celebrate his 90th birthday. He’s anxious to get around. Gerald lost both feet to diminished blood flow. “I’ve already been measured for prosthetics, and they should be here in a couple of months. Alter and Enhance Your Life Plan by Marie Page

H

as the COVID-19 pandemic affected your investment portfolio? “Chances are, it has!” says Andy Sharp, President and CEO of Altere Financial, LLC. “The question I hear most often is: ‘How should I now allocate my investments?’” “My answer,” continues Andy, “is that while your investment allocation is important, even more important are the unexpected events that can severely impact your financial assets, like COVID-19. Here at Altere Financial, LLC, we can’t prevent these unexpected events from happening, but we can do proper longer-term financial planning to ensure you are prepared to maneuver through the tough times. We are committed to helping you manage your entire financial life.” In his more than 15 years experience, Andy has worked as a broker, financial planner, research analyst, product specialist, and financial consultant for a large financial services firm. “The number one issue I have with some of the major players in this space,” explains Andy, “is that many advisors are incentivized to offer certain proprietary products. This may not help you at all, and it’s against everything we stand for at Altere. Since we are not driven by a board of directors or acting on behalf of shareholders, we have the independence to ensure you’re able to live up to the financial promises you’ve made to both yourself and your family. You should always have options when working with a financial firm. We’ve designed a model that allows you to choose a level of service unique to your individual needs. This can provide more value because we aren’t just selling you on performance, forcing you into fee-based asset management, and calling it financial planning.” Andy grew up in South Bend, Indiana. He met his wife Amy when they were both undergraduates at the University of Notre Dame. As many native Texans do, Amy returned home after graduation. Andy followed a year later, and soon after he earned his MBA in Finance from Houston Baptist University. “I may not have been born here,” says Andy, “but I couldn’t be happier. Texas enjoys a fantastic amount of progress, growth and opportunity. Our kids—Cade, Jaylie and Lee— attend outstanding FBISD schools.” In his spare time, Andy enjoys jiu-jitsu, the beach, amusement parks and music. Ready to alter and enhance your financial life plan? SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

F

Through the Crisis

or 30 years, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry (EFBHNM) has served the basic human needs of families in our community in temporary financial crisis. Programs include a food pantry, a financial assistance program, and Tri-City Churches Resale Shop. Executive Director Vickie Coates says, “When the COVID-19 Stay at Home order was issued, we had to decide what to do. We quickly reorganized to a drivethru, contactless food pantry. For every car (no screening required), we put together an enhanced supplemental food order to serve that family for a few days. Each order includes dry goods, and is further supplemented with dairy items, meat, fresh produce, bakery items and water...and we have been able to include at least one roll of toilet paper in every single order! We are very, very pleased with the drive-thru pantry.” EFBHNM temporarily suspended the financial assistance program until a remote process could be put in place for volunteer screeners. This program is back up with screeners available daily, and will likely continue to provide remote access after the crisis. Tri-City Churches Resale Shop also temporarily closed, and has now reopened. The shop has been professionally sanitized. Masks must be worn to enter the store, gloves and sanitizer are provided, and only 20 people are allowed in the store at a time. All donated items are quarantined for the proper time before being brought into the store. Vickie says, “We’d like to brag a moment on the wonderful crew at SERVPRO of Stafford/Missouri City. They donated the entire shop cleaning service to help us get back up

Development Director Stacey Williams says, “We’ve held online auctions for some of the Empty Bowls items. We are gauging interest to see if we can reschedule the event. Watch our Facebook or Instagram for updates and additional auctions.”

To date, EFBHNM has helped more than 20,000 individuals during the COVID-19 crisis.

athy Evert teaches at a local Christian academy. In March, she went from the classroom to the “Zoomroom,” teaching her students over the internet from her computer at home. One day during screen time, she reached for a book from the bookshelf at her right side and realized she couldn’t lift the book off the shelf. She had injured her rotator cuff, and the pain and limited range of motion made it difficult to perform such an easy task. In typical, heroic teacher fashion, Cathy finished the school day and made plans to see her favorite chiropractor, Dr. Steve Harris, as soon as she could. Through a recommendation from her pastor, Cathy first visited Dr. Harris for her back pain in 2012. She had such success back then that she immediately called Sugar Land Health Center to see about her shoulder pain. During her latest round of treatments, Cathy had the pleasure of meeting and working with Dr. Zack Brazzell. Sugar Land Health Center provides chiropractic treatment for people of all ages. Dr. Steve Harris opened his center in 1982, and last April he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. Together, they offer a safe and holistic approach with a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain and/or help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. “Dr. Brazzell is incredibly conscientious and very serious about treating you, and that you get better through your treatment. ictoria native Richard Weischwill has been a fisherman most of his life. After earning his captain’s license in 1995, Richard ran an inshore guide service for three years until his interests shifted offshore. “For the next 14 years, I chased blue marlin all over the world!” says Richard. “By 2013, I found my way back home and set anchor on a ranching business while continuing my love for fishing both offshore and inshore.” Once a fisherman, always a fisherman… “Fishing has always been a huge facet of my life as I love the water,” explains Richard. “My passion for fishing has also piqued my interest in the design elements of the boats that I have fished on over the years. I saw boats built by El Pescador in Port O’Connor, where I met Dave Kveton (former El Pescador Boats owner) a few years back. Dave built a great boat, and when I heard he was looking to retire, I thought the business would be an excellent opportunity for me. This business gives me the avenue to take a great product and strive to make it better. My mission is to provide an affordable, highperformance fishing boat while building and maintaining long-lasting relationships with each and every customer.” As they say, the rest is history… On January 6, 2020, Richard purchased El Pescador Boats from Dave Kveton.
