PalEEEtan Preparation ELYSSE FOJAS

UP Circuit aims to maintain and foster bonds and partnerships with different organizations, not only inside, but also outside the campus.

It teaches its members to become inclusive and aware of the communities of the different universities of our country that share their practice and interests. PalEEEtan is an annual event held by UP Circuit that is catered to Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) students from neighboring colleges and universities where they are given the chance to visit our university and institute to get a glimpse into the life of a EEE student in UP Diliman.

This year, PalEEEtan will focus on reaching out, meeting new people, and making friends.

Its theme is modeled after the mobile app ‘Tinder’ which is known as a famous dating app that connects strangers and helps them meet. However, the team stresses that PalEEEtan is only modeled after ‘Tinder’ in a way that it serves as a gateway for EEE students from other universities to meet and become acquainted with each other. After

all, we are all a part of the same industry and community of Filipino Engineers-to-be.

They are the ones who make sure that the entire team is working as a unit and that every committee is doing its designated job so that together, they can pull off the event to its best potential. They also aid the committees in overcoming the unforeseen obstacles that they may face during preparation so that all the visions and necessary components of the event are accomplished. As of September 24, 2017, the team has sent invitations to 17 EEE organizations within Metro Manila and the registration committee, headed by Elysse Fojas (16A), has been meeting up with those who have responded and shown an interest in participating in the event.

to secure as much sponsors and partner companies as possible to guarantee that the event is well-funded, enabling it to provide better and more efficient service, souvenirs, and accommodations for the participants.

Income Generating Projects (IGPs) are being carried out daily to procure the necessary funds needed for the event and a considerable list of sponsors and partners have already been accumulated.

The venues for the activities and needed equipment and supplies are procured by Bon Tomelden (16A), with factors such as number of participants, price of rent, and availability in mind. NCPAG was decidedly the most ideal and it will serve as the venue for the morning program where the company talks, organization talks from the various organizations, and lunch will be held. The program will also include fun icebreakers and games as well as an intermission number either from the IndaCKTors or the Circuit Chorus. The traditional Amazing Race, prepared by Jes Buaron (15A) along with the program flow, will be held in various stations located in the notable areas of UP Diliman to tour the visitors all around our campus.

Each station, manned by our members, will have various activities and obstacles that the participants must accomplish in order

to proceed to the next station and advance in the race. As always, the fastest group to finish the race wins the game and earns the prize.

A Facebook group will be made for the participants to promote interorganizational communication and maintain friendships even when the event is finished and everyone has gone their separate ways. Vic Datan (16B) headed the preparation and creation of publicity materials for the Facebook group, teasers, as well as personalized profile pictures for the members to further bring attention to the event.

Every event undergoes the preparation stage which requires copious amounts of time, effort, and dedication if a nearly perfect outcome is desired. There is almost always no guarantee that every single thing will go as planned but being ready to weather any obstacle to be encountered is a skill that only a well-coordinated, fully functioning team can accomplish. The event heads gave no less than their best and went all out in planning a whole day of activities for the visiting students, ensuring an enjoyable and engaging experience that they will gain new friends and stories from.

here comes a time in the life of an Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) student where one asks what could possibly help them deal with all the responsibilities and academic load that being a EEE student entails. Is it a cheerleader who would encourage you to do your best and not let the subject bring you down? A nerd who would help you in your problem sets, do your Machine Problems, and solve your circuits for you? A friend who would lift you up through laughs, talks over dinner, card games, and nights out? Or perhaps a group of students who you can call a family and would actually understand your struggles and help you become a person capable of overcoming these?

We Circuiteers have certainly found comfort in the latter and want nothing more than to share this privilege with our fellow EEE students.

At one point during the event, one of the applicants was called on to the stage as a volunteer to perform a song with two of UP Circuit Chorus’ members – Efraim Aquino (15A) and Stan Mamala (14B).

Afterwards, UP Circuit’s very own Circuit Chorus serenaded the audience with the songs they competed with in last year’s Engineering Week, filling the room with soothing mellow

and wished that the applicants enjoyed the rest of the evening.

Before continuing with the rest of the program, the hosts broke the ice by getting to know a bit more about the applicants. They were asked to introduce themselves and share what made them take the chance to be part of our organization. UP Circuit in all its glory was presented with brief descriptions of our annual events, proud alumni, and achievements to give the applicants a glimpse into what exactly our organization is. The Vice Presidents of each division - Academic Affairs, External Affairs, Finance, Internal Affairs, Membership, and Publicity all gave the audience a few words to provide insight on the

music and the hearts and ears of every member and applicant with sweet melody.

Finally, the program has come to the part of the actual Application Process. Applicants attentively listened as every bit of the journey that lies ahead of them were discussed.

From the Apprenticeship to the Hell Days, each part of their application process is designed to determine their willingness and drive to be a Circuiteer. At the end of the night, UP Circuit’s Executive Vice President, Katreena Gabrielle Juntado (15A), gave the closing remarks; ending the program with words of wisdom and encouragement as she wished the applicants good luck.

With time to spare, the members, together with the applicants, cried out “Circuit, Hayt!” as we welcomed a new set of people who dared to take on the challenge to become a Circuiteer. As they go through a redesigned Application Process, we definitely look forward to what this new batch of applicants has in store.

With the start of another academic year and a new Executive Board taking over, things are already set in motion. With the events being prepared for, several meetings have already been conducted. The members have begun tackling their respective responsibilities in order to deliver throughout the organization’s upcoming events: The E-Waste Project, PalEEEtan, and its flagship event— SquEEEze. UP Circuit gathered for its first General Assembly for this academic year last August 24. Before starting, the Executive Board first took things to a lighter and more fun mood by conducting a minigame for its members.

They were tasked to pose for hilarious scenarios which gave the audience good laughs. Fighting spirit still prevalent, Batch 2013 and beyond emerged victorious, earning them prizes as rewards for their efforts. This gimmick brings about something new, fun, and different from the usual happenings in the General Assembly. A quick assessment of the organization’s movement during the midyear was given by one of the heads of InteraCKT Year 7, Carl Adrian Patco (15A), having him and his team successfully making the organization’s name and presence known to this year’s EEE freshmen.

On a more serious note, the General Assembly takes on a change of pace and style. New house rules were first introduced and are now to be implemented to keep the members involved and focused in the discussions.

The Executive Board has also allowed for better interaction, evaluation, and sharing of ideas among members by introducing comment forms which they may opt to fill up if they please.

With September finally arriving, UP Circuit turns its focus and energy to deliver on PalEEEtan— now with a new theme that emphasizes forming new connections and friendships; with the 21st SquEEEze, also drawing near, several meetings have already been held to discuss the necessary preparations for its flagship event.

Just last Tuesday, September 19, the organization had already held its second General Assembly in the addressing and preparation of PalEEEtan.

Another minigame was held yet again to relax the members and lighten the mood. Immediately after, the overall heads Francis Loyola (14A) and Erick Ocampo (14B) broke the bad news that this year’s Campus Exchange had been canceled due to the disapproval of the administration of De La Salle University, with reasons not clarified.

The Code of Discipline was then reviewed thoroughly and accordingly revised and given new. Evaluation forms were handed out for feedback to be able to better understand how the members felt about these new

changes in the Code. Among these were that official documents such as records, papers, letters, and other miscellaneous items that associate with the organization were subject to bear the official seal of the organization, with the Executive Board’s approval; and the schedule of the assigned division for the weekly cleaners to maintain the Tambayan was updated. Members were reminded to strictly follow the mechanics with renewing their membership since access to academic materials and reviews held by the Academic Affairs Division were strictly limited to its renewed members.

As always, each division has given their own updates of accomplishments as of September.

Academic Affairs: Members have already been assigned topics to be able to formulate questions for the 21st SquEEEze. Academic materials such as the Drive, primers, books, exam calendar, review sessions, and Academic Piazza have been updated and released for use of the members.

External Affairs: The Organization’s Alumni Database has finally been updated, and the Organization Recognition and Proposals are currently underway.

Finance : An inventory is to be made for better handling and distribution of shirts and other merchandise

from the Organization. Budget request forms have been implemented to keep track of when the core teams of our events need financial assistance.

Internal Affairs : Internal Affairs also bring to us its newly organized event: Circuit Sports League— an integrated sports event of CIrcuit Basketball and Volleyball league.

Membership : The application process has finally begun with a total of thirteen (13) people applying for membership this semester. The Code of Discipline has been previously reviewed and evaluated from last Tuesday’s General Assembly. With the new additions to the application process, Circuit hopes to more effectively bring out the applicants; potential and talents, Publicity : The organization’s branding has been reviewed and discussed among the members. A photoshoot for PalEEEtan was recently done to promote the upcoming event.

While it is still early in the year, UP Circuit hopes to achieve more and do better as an organization. It is once again ready to face the new challenges and obstacles the future may bring; and we can always expect this organization to give its best and exceed expectations.

Set Sail!

ENGINEERING OPENING WEEK 2017

Last August, the Engineering Student Council held the annual Engineering Opening Week with the theme ‘Set Sail’. This consists of various events such as the sportsfest, seminars, academic and organization fairs, service and NGO booths, and a culminating night to conclude the week.

Most of these events are catered to aid in the beginning of the voyage of the engineering freshmen and welcome them to their college journey.

For Surf’s Up: Opening Week Sportsfest, not only did we take part in this event, but we also fought hard with immense heart and spirit, landing us the title of Volleyball and DOTA Champions.

Unsurprisingly, some of our very own Circuiteers were part of the teams that helped boost EEE to place 2nd runner-up in the Overall Rankings. In the DOTA Team, we have Joenard Matanguihan (14B); and in the Volleyball Team, we have Allysa Atienza (16A), Bea Dapula (14A), Brandon Cipriano (14A), Jahred Ibañez (13B), Jeremy Nicole Lapiz (13B), Justine Cesar Desamero (13B), Nadine Danielle Reyes (15B), and Raven Karl Lubuguin (12A).

In All Aboard: Organization Fair, participating engineering organizations held booths with activities aligned with the promotion and awareness of mental health. UP Circuit decided to hold a knockthe-cans booth. Guests are given balls to throw at towers of black cans. The cans depicted the various mental health issues written on them as black angry monsters that needed to be brought down and eliminated. A few examples of mental health monsters represented by the cans were anxieties, depression, fear of failure, ADHD, OCD, stress, and confusion.

Aside from being designed as a way for fellow students to relieve their accumulated stress and salt, the booth also hoped to be able make its guests feel like they

can overcome anything, that their mental health problems are just monsters that they can control, win over or even work with. After knocking off the cans, the message “u r stronk” can be seen on the background, over a purple sky that can be interpreted as either dawn or dusk - a fresh start or a short rest after a hard battle to fight again tomorrow.

As a new semester and school year begins, we want our fellow students to know that they are not alone in their battles, and that these battles are definitely something that can be won. The university serves as their second home, a place for learning, growth, and progress; and that the College of Engineering welcomes them into this home with wide smiles and open arms.
