Welcome! We’re all about learning here at UofL’s Delphi Center and we want to make you a part of it!

The Key to Individual and Organizational Success: Polished Skills in 5 Critical Areas

When individuals like you are exploring ways to polish skills and develop new abilities, we’re here to help with workshops and professional certificates. When organizations are looking for ways to solve problems or move to the next level of success, we’re here to provide strategic learning solutions like corporate universities and customized programs.

Organizations don’t excel because of a strong vision or a charismatic leader alone. They excel because their employees are passionate and empowered to carry out that vision. The University of Louisville’s Delphi Center has identified five critical skills managers need to stimulate productivity, performance and passion. We like to refer to these as the “Five Empowering Pillars of Management” that drive the development and design of all our programs.

As your local university, we can leverage learning resources to meet your training and development needs. And you can rely on us. We’re part of Louisville’s business community and we want to have significant and lasting impact. We’re more than a training provider. We work in partnership with you to meet your challenges and deliver learning solutions that get you the results you want. I invite you to explore this catalog. There are workshops and certificates available to help you polish your skills and increase your professional value. You’ll also find information to help you think about using learning as a strategic advantage in your organization. We’ve even included a white paper on page 29 about three critical roles in which many managers fail. We welcome your calls and emails. Let us help you develop a learning strategy that supports your goals. Here’s to learning that gets results!

Imagine if your organization exhibited all of these success factors:

• A drive for greater productivity with an openness to change • The ability to quickly identify and address worthy problems • The pursuit of new and revolutionary ideas dedicated to your organization’s and your customers’ success

• An environment of effective interaction and teamwork • A motivating culture that stimulates innovation and the passion to continually move your organization forward It’s possible if your organization is led by managers focused on the five skill sets essential to effective leadership.

As the diagram indicates, key organizational success factors such as an innovative culture, productivity and change and effective interaction are driven by managers who have mastered skills in the following areas: Virginia Denny Director of Professional Development University of Louisville Delphi Center

Feel like HR is disconnected or underutilized in your company?

Coaching and Motivational Impact

HR departments are often viewed as cost centers that support others and react to internal issues. However, by measuring and reporting the effectiveness of HR programs, many HR professionals have enhanced their recognized value and become an indispensable, strategic partner in accomplishing a company’s business strategies.

Motivation is part understanding, part incentive, and part passion. It is not something that comes naturally—especially to today’s workforce and its diverse needs and perspectives. Great leaders must learn the skills that elevate the performance and passion of others. These workshops will help you develop the know-how needed to help individuals and teams become accountable for and achieve greater performance and productivity.

Specially designed for current or developing HR leaders, this new two-day course teaches HR professionals how to present the essential measurable value of HR and communicate with senior management using the quantitative business language that drives business today.

“Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.”

Day one identifies HR measurements that drive a company. Day two addresses how to apply those measurements using real world examples. Drawing heavily from the work of Jac Fitz-enz, this seminar will help you gauge and promote the effectiveness, impact and contributions of your department.

You Will Learn to:

Critical Measurements for HR Professionals: How to Become Your Organization’s Strategic Partner

Instructor: James Hale Schedule: Wednesdays, 11/09 & 11/16/11 Course #127EBF Register Fee: $599 for 2 days of training

Want a more productive AND excited staff?

Critical Thinking Empowerment

The primary responsibility of any manager is to maximize the performance of his or her direct reports. However, it is also one of the most frustrating and emotionally draining responsibilities facing any manager. Every manager second guesses and assumes responsibility when employees fail to produce at the desired level.

Today’s business environment provides new challenges requiring good decisions based on experience and creative problem solving. Many organizations are struggling to find people who can think critically. These engaging workshops offer a variety of ways to help you think strategically. Become known in your organization as a great thinker who can solve problems, assess challenges and innovate!

Does this sound familiar? You want your employees to succeed, but it sometimes seems like they’re fighting you. This is natural, but not something you have to accept. There are proven tools and approaches that can give you the confidence to demand more from your people—and do so in a way that they actually LIKE.

“Making good decisions is a crucial skill at every level.”

This class takes a no-nonsense look at how we manage other people and how we can excite them about performing better. Two days of hard-hitting, totally practical skills to help you sleep better at nights, rather than lie awake wondering how to lead your people.

You Will Learn to:

• Understand and leverage your personal “situational leadership” style • Manage any direct report at any time in any situation • Become a coach that will engage and motivate your employees • Allocate your time appropriately to maximize productivity • Set SMART goals for great outcomes • Develop direct reports to their full potential • Use and/or enhance your performance appraisal ratings and meetings to empower your best employees, stimulate those with potential and identify chronic non-performers • Confidently make the decisions that will result in more productive and excited employees • Stop spending so much time on people who don’t contribute to organizational performance

Feedback is the single factor that motivates or demoralizes a workforce. How you or your staff provides feedback will result in an engaged staff excited about their impact on an organization or a disengaged staff reluctant to contribute or innovate. Giving feedback—both positive and constructive—on an employee’s performance is a necessary skill for every supervisor. That’s why it is often called “an effective manager’s secret weapon.” During this workshop, you will learn insightful and appropriate keys to correcting poor performance and giving praise and recognition in ways that move any employee to more aggressively contribute to an organization.

How to Maximize Your Efficiency, Effectiveness and Productivity (and Achieve what Really Matters!)

Instructor: Linda Combs Schedule: Tuesday, 08/02/11

Do you get caught in the middle of being too assertive in some situations and too reflective in others? It’s a fine line to walk, but to be heard effectively takes special skill and understanding. Once addressed, however, it results in greater excitement from your audiences, increased confidence in your own ability to persuade and engage, and clearer direction and alignment from everyone. It’s a vital skill often underappreciated and underutilized, but the best leaders understand and apply it.

Emotional Intelligence: The Foundation for Lifelong Professional and Organizational Success

Research indicates that, for jobs of every type, Emotional Intelligence is twice as important as IQ and technical skills combined. Moreover, EI accounts for 85% of what separates star performers from average ones. It happens all the time: visionaries get fired, potential star employees fail to meet expectations, and groups of the most promising staff can’t seem to get the job done. It’s not for a lack of skill or desire; it is often simply an understanding of how to recognize and apply our own and others’ feelings in the workplace. This has become the foundation for the impact of Emotional Intelligence*, insights that even the most seasoned executives often lack. When properly understood and applied, EI creates a new, more consistent level of star performance throughout an organization and throughout an individual’s career. Emotional Intelligence can be learned and developed. Start reaping the many benefits of EI by registering for this workshop!

Fee: $349 You Will Discover: *Daniel Goleman, author of the bestseller, Working with Emotional Intelligence, describes EI as “recognizing and managing our own feelings and those of others—the fundamentals upon which are built such important organizational competencies as outstanding leadership, customer service and teamwork.”

• The value of EI at different job levels • How to use EI to dramatically increase productivity and performance

Surprise! The Most Successful Leaders Excel in the Basics We live in a society that looks for “quick fixes.” We jump on trends. We race to grab the latest gimmicks because we worry about being left behind. The 90’s are a perfect example. The dot-com craze found investors supporting technology that lacked business plans for success. Companies were excited about products that just did not have a market. Encouraged by an industry boom, these companies and their shareholders later experienced the results of pursuing hot trends when the bubble burst.

The same can be said for management. There is a rush to bring in short-term success ideas. Sizzle takes precedence over substance. Top-down politics outweighs dedication to quality and focus on long-term management.

Many businesses flounder today because they have lost focus on what matters in driving organizational success. Talk to HR managers and top executives and you’ll learn what frustrates them the most. Personal accountability is lacking in their employees. Staffs lack trust in their managers. Managers are not sure how to align their departments. There is a major resistance to change; priority is placed on selfpreservation over productivity.

In looking for “quick fixes,” many organizations promote or hire untrained management teams. The result? Most new managers actually survive less than two years in their jobs. A Hay Group survey reveals that the cause lies in the inability to fulfill three critical management roles of empowerment and engagement: casting a clear vision others can follow, failure to create a team environment, and insensitivity to others.

Primary reasons leaders fail:

The Delphi Center’s workshops are designed to address these three critical roles and others essential to management success. We believe that leadership at all levels—especially at the managerial level— can be one of an organization’s most powerful assets. That’s why each workshop is taught from a leadership perspective.

Organizations that develop leaders at all levels enjoy many benefits including highly-engaged and motivated employees, successful change initiatives, enhanced creativity and critical thinking, improvements in teamwork, and greater productivity throughout the organization. We invite your organization to experience the Delphi Center difference through our leadership-based workshops and certificate programs.
