Student Experience
Our public health faculty seek to empower students through teaching, research and service to transform communities. Public health students discover a community of support where shared academic and social activities are found in and outside the classroom. Opportunities in leadership, service, research and learning are essential in the public health experience and journey. Students will discover an inclusive and supportive learning environment that begins with their first semester through graduation and beyond.
Public Health Organizations
The American Public Health Association (apha.org) strengthens the public health profession and speaks out for public health issues and policies backed by science. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (aspph.org) is another resource to learn more about the field of public health and career possibilities. The school also has an active Student Government Association (SGA) and operates the UofL chapter of the Kentucky Public Health Association (KPHA).
Career Readiness & Experiential Learning
In public health, career preparation starts when you are a freshman and continues with a career readiness course in your junior year. You will then use the skills you have learned to identify an internship. This six-credit-hour capstone requirement is a culminating practice experience where students apply classroom knowledge to real world public health issues. There are over 100 approved experiential learning opportunities, including the Wilderness Corps, American Diabetes Association, Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness, Kentucky Department for Public Health, and Trilogy Health Services.
DEGREE PROGRAMS
BA & BS in Public Health
The BA and BS degrees provide the knowledge and skills to have a successful career in public health, healthcare and related fields. You will learn how to think critically and systemically, communicate and work in teams.
Pre-Health Professional Track
This track is an option within the BS program. It integrates pre-requisite courses for professional degrees in medicine, nursing, dentistry or physical therapy, by integrating pre-requisite courses into the undergraduate degree program.
Dual Credit Courses
Kentucky high school students can register for dual credit courses to get a head start, and prepare for the world of public health. Consider enrolling in these 3-credit hour courses:

Accelerated Master’s Degree
With our accelerated program, you can complete a bachelor’s degree in public health or any UofL major and earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree over a five-year period. The MPH degree provides students with training in foundational competencies as well as a specific area of concentration.
