Every emotion is an inspiration to make music.

6|

5th year Anniversary Issue

1. What inspired you to make music? Every emotion is an inspiration to make music. Music is the outlet to our feelings we sometimes don’t know how to release. Every situation good, great, sad, or horrible deserves 1,000 songs written 1,000 ways for all different demographics to be able to use as their outlet. 2. How do people react when they see you in public? Depends how I’m dressed [LV laughs].

3. What do you do to keep your body in shape? I’m really into fitness. I work out at least five days a week. I eat healthy for the most part. I follow a pescatarian diet and rarely eat bread and sweets. 4. Craziest thing a fan ever done or said to you? Death threats to me are the craziest, I’ve had a couple people threaten to come to my shows and kill me. It’s pretty scary because you can’t really take it too lightly. It happened to other artist before like Christina Grimmie RIP, and Ariana Grande’s Manchester attack, etc. 5. Who was your favorite collaboration and why? So far my favorite collab has been with my producers. My whole production team in Miami is fire and we’re family. So if I’m giving love to anyone it’s them and the people who have been rocking with me since day one. DJ Money Wills, and K.E. on the Track who has just been humble since day one. As far as an artist feature I would say, DDG is my favorite because he’s just really cool, down to earth, and easy to work with.

6. Are you currently signed to a record label? No. I’m currently independent and not looking to rush that process either. The right partner will come along at the right time if it’s meant to be. At the moment I’m enjoying my creative freedom. Fortunately, I’m in a position to fund my career and all that I need to keep the wheels moving forward. 7. What was it like working with DDG on your new single “Done Wit it”? And what do you want everyone to takeaway? Working with DDG was awesome. I actually met him through my childhood friend and his brother in the studio in LA. We talked back and fourth for a little while about collaborating then finally locked in and got it done and shot the video a few weeks later. Everything was fun and organic. As far as the record I think it’s really an anthem for both the females and the guys to basically tell someone they’re dealing with to f*ck off they don’t deserve what you bring to the table. It’s empowering and has a laid back bounce to it that everyone can vibe to.

I follow a pescatarian diet and rarely eat bread and sweets.

8. Tell us something fans don’t know about you? Everyone thinks I’m Latina. I guess I have a Latina look but I’m actually Sicilian, Irish Russian and Scottish [LV Laughs]. 9. Are you dating anyone right now? If not why? I have someone in my life I care a lot about but right now. I’m really focused on my music and it takes all my love time and dedication. 10. What is the most money you ever spent? I lost $10,000 gambling in Nassau does that count as spending it? [LV Laughs] Aside from that purchasing homes both in Phoenix and Florida or maybe my car. 11. If you could have a superpower what would it be? My superpower would be to teleport 100%. I feel like it’s kind of got the best aspects of everything I want to do. Time is the one thing we’re short of, and seeing the whole world with people you love is what life is about to me. So if I could teleport I could do all that without travel time killing me and of course I could teleport into and out of a bank vault to pay for anything I want so I think it covers all bases [LV Laughs].

Juice Wrld tribute

Born Jarad Anthony Higgins, Juice Wrld grew up in Chicago, Illinois were he would begin to achieve his dreams of becoming a platinum recording artist. Coming up Jarad was influenced by artists such as Chief Keef and Kanye West for their Chicago bred style. In 5th grade according to the show Before They Were Famous, it is reported that in attempts to impress a girl, he began to listen to pop, rock, and heavy metal. He combined those influences with some other early to late 2000’s HipHop, and other timeless genres to create a relatable sound that involved content surrounding love, heartbreak and loss. Juice was also able to teach himself to play the drums, guitar, and piano. He spent a lot of time moving from home to home which made him very open and social. In early high school, at the time Juice decided to pursue music, he spent a lot of his time listening to artists such as Future and began to be influenced by popular drugs such as Lean as early as 12 years old (Baller TV). Though he’s expressed his experiences with opioids, he explained that he tried hard to focus on music, school and going to college. After getting fired from his first job, he knew that having a part time job was

not in his future. In 2015 he decided to go by the name Juice the Kid, expressing in an interview that he chose the name from a hairstyle he wore similar to the cut worn by “Bishop,” Tupac Shakur’s character in the 1992 movie titled “Juice.” He released a couple of SoundCloud songs under the name like, “Forever,” “Make it There,” and “Lost My Mind.” It was there that one of his music videos hit 10,000 views according to Before They were Famous, and began to work with Nick Mira and The Collection: Internet Money . With this collaboration, Juice would stick with the name Juice Wrld and create the streaming hit, “Lucid Dreams.” The song hit number 2 on the Billboard charts for 48 weeks. This single was featured in a mixtape titled “999.” He told Sway from Sway’s Universe in a 2018 interview, “999 represents taking whatever ill, whatever bad situation, whatever struggle you’re going through and turning it into something positive to push yourself forward.” He then went on to make “Nothing’s Different,” “Goodbye and Good Riddance,” “Future & Juice Wrld Present... Wrld on Drugs.” He collaborated with video director Cole

Bennett to create the visuals for “All Girls are the Same’’ and “Lucid Dreams.” He was even co-signed by popular artists such as Uzi-Vert. Soaring the heights of Stardom proved to pay a price for the young rapper as he began to indulge in drugs to cope with the struggles he was now enduring. Now transpiring in his music, Juice was in a world of depression and sadness. On December 8th, 2019, after a flight from Los Angeles, Juice Wrld was rushed to the hospital after reported having a seizure. He was pronounced dead shortly after at a local Chicago hospital. ABC reported that the rapper enjested opioids before the seizure. Luggage filled with drugs, guns, and money were found on the aircraft during the night in question, ABC also reports. Though his death was sudden and left to question, we take the time to honor the young rapper and his rise to fame. In the wake of his death, we are all taught the important lesson that drugs can’t fulfill desires and if abused, can ultimately lead to an untimely demise. With your music and lessons we will go on to make ourselves stronger and more prepared. Here’s to you Juice.

Born: Chicago, Illinois Title: American Rapper, Singer, and songwriter Known for: “Lucid Dreams & “All Girls are the same” Sunrise: December 2, 1998 Sunset: December 8, 2019

TayF3RD Album Release Tales From the Shrimp Untouchable Magazine attended TayF3rd album release party February 19th, 2020 downtown Los Angeles. The red carpet was jumping. It was a pleasure to attend the event because I haven’t heard of Tay in hot second. I’ve heard about him trying to make a come back. Last time I seen him he was out at BET Fan Fest. Then I later heard he was signed to Big Boy record label. So it’s nice to see a young brother making moves. Slink Johnson A.K.A. Black Jesus was the host of the event. He also interviewed Tay for the night. So shouts out to Black Jesus. Right off the bat Slink asked TayF3rd where the name came from? And Tay replied, his father is from South Korea so he was basically a American citizen but my mother was born in Germany. My Father’s name is David Kim. My mom tried to name me Deont’e that’s my real name. This the first time a lot of y’all are hearing this but my first name is Deont’e and my last name is Kim. So I took my fathers last name. So Tay came from that. The F came from a crew that I hang with in Long Beach. This Eastside Long Beach shit. And the F part comes from. I am going to

put it like this “I’m really from these streets. Everything that goes on I know what’s happening. I want to be involved with it because I’m trying to get into a positive outcome instead of the negative outcome that I’m used to” TayF3rd said when he first started rapping his mom was driving a 5.0 Mustang Camaro with the rag letter top. He said his mother played a hiphop song by BoneThugs and I was like “Oh shit this shit is fire” I think I just like the way they were rapping fast. Then I heard a Snoop Dogg song and my mom was like “He’s from

I looked up after BoneThugs, I looked up after Snoop, I looked up after SugaFree, I looked up after Mack 10. I looked up after a lot of people who had long hair.

where you’re from” She kept saying he met you before. I guess when I was a kid I was in one of his video’s I’m not to sure I don’t remember. Long story short I just wanted to be a long hair rapper. So I looked up after BoneThugs, I looked up after Snoop, I looked up after SugaFree, I looked up after Mack 10. I looked up after a lot of people who had long hair. I was like “Yeah I could just take all of these styles and put them into one.” Slink Johnson asked TayF3rd what is the concept behind “Tales from the shrimp” and what do you mean by the Shrimp? Tay replied, all right so check it out right Tales from the Underdog right? If I would have said that what would you think? It was tales from a nigga that didn’t have nothing but he got something right? Written by: David Solis Interviewed by: Slink Johnson Photos by: David Solis

So this is my first time seeing any of this type of shit; ever in my life.

Especially for me so I called it tales from the shrimp because like I’m the underdog. But the underdog after a couple years, couples albums, thousands of hours he becomes the top dog. So the underdog where he becomes the top dog that’s a shrimp. A shrimp is a bottom feeder. So I put it in the perspective I’m in the water. I’m a shrimp. I’m a bottom feeder. Everybody tried to crucify me and they don’t even know me. They seen me on the Internet, ninety percent of these people never seen me in real life. Everybody trying to make it seem like I’m the bad guy. I don’t have anything to prove to them I’m be me but if y’all see me y’all be like “okay, he cool” After going into details about his album Tay performed some of his favorite songs from the album. Head over to our youtube channel for some of the highlights of that night and to catch TayF3rd live on stage.

Kobe Bryant’s Memorial

The Greatest player of all time

Sunrise: August 23,1978 | Sunset: January 26, 2020 The death of Kobe Bryant has been the biggest movement I’ve ever in my life seen. Kobe died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California at the age 41 along side his 13-yearold daughter Gianna and seven others. I’ve seen people die and just have a funeral but when Kobe passed it was like he never died. His fans keep his legacy alive by going out to the staple center to show their support and paying their respects to the legend. Fans built a wall of paper to sign for Kobe. This news hit nationwide.

Kobe was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but the love he gave to the city was priceless. As far as anyone was concerned he was from Los Angeles because he played his whole career here. He came straight out of high school to the pros. Los Angeles has always treated Kobe like one of us. He has played professional in the league for 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers. Bryant has won five NBA championships; he’s an 18 time all-star, 15time member of the All NBA Team, and a 12-time member of the All Defensive Team. He was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2008, and 2 time NBA finals MVP winner. Kobe is the son of former basketball player Joe Bryant nicknamed “Jellybean” who was the head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks back in the early 2000’s. Kobe Bryant attended Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania where he was the top high school basketball player in the county in which lead him to the NBA draft pick in 1996. He got picked up by the Charlotte Hornets as the 13th draft pick then traded to the Lakers. The following year he won the 1997 Slam Dunk contest, which gave him a high reputation. Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal lead the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships. I can remember as a fan going down to the Staple Center to celebrate with the thousands of fans. I didn’t realize how young Kobe was at the time because I was just a kid but looking back at it wow he was young doing a lot. I was literally a kid at the time in elementary school but I remember

Kobe set one of the biggest NBA records of all time by scoring 81 points in a single game. 5th year Anniversary Issue

attending every single parade they held at the Staple Center for the 3-peat. It drove the city insane. Bryant led the NBA in scoring during the 2005-06 and 200607 seasons. In 2006 Kobe set one of the biggest NBA records of all time by scoring 81 points in a single game. He scored the second most points in a single game behind Wilt

Chamberlain’s who scored 100 points in a game. In 2009 and 2010 Kobe led the Lakers to another two championships along with earning the Final MVP. At the age 34 Kobe became the youngest player in the league history to reach 30,000 career points. He was the all time leading scorer in the Lakers franchise history surpassing Jerry West in 2010.

As of today I’ve seen just about everything. People with the number 24 in their haircuts, Kobe tattoos, a bus driving around with R.I.P Kobe, custom made luxury cars with Kobe Bryant photos and memories, billboards playing Kobe’s highlights. Everything was taken to the next level the Staple Center was filled with R.I.P scarfs, hats, T-Shirts, and other really cool merchandise.

The day of his memorial all of his fans came out with all of their custom made basketball pieces. We would like to send our prayers out to Kobe Bryant’s entire family. We know this is a tough lost. He will never be forgotten. He will always be missed. He will always be remembered. He was more then a basketball player. He was a role model but most of all a family man. His legacy continues forever and may he rest in peace.

Use your space to connect with the audience Use the whole stage. Be sure to move around during your show. Don’t stand in one spot. You have an audience to the left and right of you. Entertain both sides. Later in your performance go off stage and perform on a table (if it’s safe), Jump up and down, Jump on a speaker. Go directly up to people in the crowd and serenade those lyrics on them. You have to remember that people want to be entertained. They don’t want to be bored. Use all your energy to connect with everyone in the room. Dance moves are great so don’t be shy! Many artists have a signature move. Some artist open up bottles of liquor and pour shots. Some people give out money. What can you do to make a long lasting memorable impression? Dress to Impress Image is key when you’re on stage. It’s another way to grasp your audience’s attention. When you’re on stage it’s your moment to shine and you want to look the best in the room. You don’t have to spend a lot on your threads,

22 |

5th year Anniversary Issue

but put in some effort. If you’re wearing sneakers simply clean them before you perform, iron your clothes, and get your hair cut or glued in. Also, consider a signature look. When we think of Lizzo we think of skin, booty, and Lingerie. Pharrell wears a lot of hats, we knew Marylin Monroe for her blonde bob, Alicia Keys for her braids. Micheal Jackson wore a glove, and Ariana Grande lives for those high ponytails. Next time you have a show don’t think of your clothes as clothes, think of your attire as a costume. Get information on your audience ahead of time Sometimes your outfit or your song choice needs to be catered to the crowd. Wearing a t-shirt with pictures of weed or shirts with cursing could really throw off the wrong crowd. Here’s an example, If you’re at a fair and your song is about drinking liquor in a club or how good your booty looks, that song might not be the best choice for that crowd. Curse as much as you want, but do your research on your audience. Some songs are best with a mature crowd. Always keep a couple of commercial/universal songs in your repertoire so

you can perform anywhere. It’s important to be versatile when getting your song list together. There should never be a dull moment In between your songs, talk to the crowd. Say a joke, ask them how they’re doing. Engage and connect with the crowd as much as you can. If you don’t engage people loose interest. Sometimes a microphone will go out, or your next song won’t start. Guess what? The show must go on! Try to stall a little. Take that time to give out your social media information, take a picture with the crowd. It’s your moment. And if the sound never comes back properly do a little A cappella. Rehearse It’s such a simple thing but you’d be surprised how many people don’t do this. Learn your lyrics before you go onstage. Know how you’re going to perform them. Have someone record you during rehearsal’s. Sometimes it helps to see what you look like on stage. If you can get in front of a mirror even better. Written by: Nadirah Willoughy

I do spin three times a week. I workout, I do Yoga, I lift weights here and there. I am trying to get into weight more so I can tone up more.

5th year Anniversary Issue

1. What are your biggest inspirations? I would have to say my children. They are amazing and they keep me motivated. They keep me inspired. They’re very funny so they keep me on my toes. They are routing for me so much. They are always seeing everything that I’m doing. They keep me going. They inspire me to keep going. They want to see me blow so bad. I see it in their eyes. They are like “Mom, what did you do today?” I found out they tell their teachers I’m a savage which I was like ‘Oh okay” because one of the teachers told me. My son was like “my moms a savage, people don’t know she’s a savage” so I was like okay my son thinks I’m a savage okay. So I would have to say my kids by far are my greatest inspiration and achievement.

2. How many kids do you have? I have two children a boy and a girl. Heaven and Hendrixs and I have a dog to so I have to add him. He’s like my fifth dog but he’s the one that’s alive right now. 3. Who is someone you would love to work with that you haven’t gotten the chance to yet? I have two people. I would love to work with Samuel L. Jackson. I got a chance to meet him. I made him sit with me for an hour in his trailer when he was shooting Coach Carter. He was so sweet. My good friend Johnetta Stowers hooked that up. She was doing his hair and make up and she knew how much I loved him so she was like come down were on set filming you could meet him. I got a chance to meet him, talk to him, and just tell him I’m his biggest

fan. So I would love love love to work with Samuel L. Jackson. Secondly, Quentin Tarantino because he is the goat. I mean he is Quentin Tarantino Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Django, so many incredible movies you name it I just love Quentin Tarantino. 4. Tell us what inspired you to write your Skinny Bish Keto Book? And what was your favorite part of the process? I had went through a period where I had gained a lot of weight and I didn’t like how I was looking. I just wasn’t feeling sexy I wasn’t feeling like myself. So I got into Keto, which is a diet. It’s a high fat, low carb, no sugar. So I started loosing the weight and I was like “Oh, this is a lifestyle for me I could handle it.” Because I could still drink you know I like my Vodka. I could still have my Vodka, I could still eat meat which I love meat to. So I was like “I like this lifestyle, its helping me loose weight. It’s also helping me to control my appetite and not overeat. I used to overeat a lot so that is what inspired the Skinny Bish Keto brand. So I was like “if I’m living this lifestyle, I see people are tuning in, I started posting my workouts, started posting my meals and everything that I was eating to show them the weight loss process. I was like people really love this let me bring it to the people and share my recipes with what I’m using to help me lose the weight. That is what inspired Skinny Bish Keto and for the cookbook. The

greatest part about doing the cook book which is me trying out the recipes, putting the recipes together, figuring out what would work for certain types of audiences and just having fun cooking. That was the best part of that. 5. What are you doing to keep your body in shape? I do spin three times a week. I workout, I do Yoga, I lift weights here and there. I am trying to get into weights more so I can tone up more. Mainly I got to spin because spin makes me sweat. When I’m in spin a lot of inspiration comes. Shout out to Voltage Indoor Spinning in Chatsworth and Marie. She’ll text me every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to make sure I bring my ass in there because some days I be like “I ain’t coming” and she’ll be like “Get your ass up.” So I get there. The music is incredible so I’m zoned out; its like a club in there she got lights down, she got the LED lights going. So I get to party while I’m working out. So I would have to say me spinning and doing at home exercises. I have a few exercises equipment that I use. I also have a boxing gym in my garage. So I box a little bit and lift a little bit of weights to. 6. What are a few of your favorite recipes to make? My favorite is the garlic Tuscan Chicken. I love chicken so I make that a lot. Also a Southern Sethi I love to make it. It’s also vegetarian. So for people who are vegetarians and say Keto is not

for vegetarians that’s a lie because I have that in there too. Southern Sethi. I also substitute Cauliflower for a lot of things. So I had this creamy Cauliflower dish that I use. I use Cauliflower for rice, pasta, you name it. Like I make my shrimp fried rice instead of using rice I use the Cauliflower. I chop it up and make it real fine. So I would have to say the Chicken, the Sethi, and the Cauliflower dishes are my favorites. 7. As a comedian. What location has been your favorite to perform at? Baltimore by far is my favorite. I love Baltimore. I love Detroit because these are real cities like when I leave Los Angeles to these cities and I can make these people laugh because let me tell you they are hard. Those two cities right there help me grow literally in one

weekend more then being out in Los Angeles for a year and a half doing the comedy clubs around here because they are so real and they gone let you know. So I would say those two because they help me grow. They are scary but if I can perform in front of them and make them laugh I’m like “Okay I’m on track.”

8.Have you ever got booed off stage? I’ve never been booed. I wish somebody would boo me because I’m coming for that ass. I am great at comebacks. Somebody tried me in the Bronx before. This man tried me and when I went in on him the whole crowd was like “What.” So yeah I like when men try me because they don’t expect me to come back so yeah I never been booed. If I was to ever get booed I would be like “okay cool, let me go back to the drawing board and work on some jokes. Its all good” but no I can’t say I ever been booed never. 9. What has been one of your biggest set backs in your life or career that has helped you grow or that you’ve learned the most from? I would have to say my divorce was a big setback because I went

I would have to say my kids by far are my greatest inspiration and achievement. 5th year Anniversary Issue

through a period of up and down emotions and feeling like am I worthy enough? Am I good enough? At the time my ex husband was like blowing up big and I started noticing some people really wasn’t messing with me like how they used to. So now I’m like “okay I got to fight even harder.” Some people feels like well you have this name it should be easier for you. Actually no its not I have to work ten times harder because number one coming into this industry a lot of people didn’t know that this is what I did too, they just assumed I was somebodies wife. Its like no I been training since a kid, I been doing the work, classes, school everything you know. So trying to even fight to get people to understand that this was my dream too. That would have to be the biggest setback but it also helped me because it’s like “okay if you really want this Torrei then your going to do the work.” Your going to get out there and do everything you got to do. I would have my kids take time off. I took off eight years to raise my kids for the first ten years of their life because I didn’t want to have two parents on the road and then my kids is being raised by a nanny. I made sure I put them first and now they are at ages where I feel like I’m able to do my thang. It’s working. It’s working really good. So my divorce is my biggest setback but it also helped me learn so much and help so many women. I have so

42 |

many women that reach out to me and ask me for advice and how to handle it. I get stories where one lady one time she was going to commit suicide because her husband left her for somebody she knew. I was like “Honey, no ain’t no men worth you losing your life. There other men out there that’s not going to treat you wrong and that are going to respect you and uphold you and lift you. So lets get out of that rut and she did. I stay in touch with her until this day and just make sure she is good so there is a good purpose behind it. 10.Most money you ever spent? I paid 15,000 for a vacation. 11. Most awkwardness thing a fan has ever done? I don’t really get that many awkward things like that. A lot of people be scared of me for some reason I don’t understand why. I’m like “I’m cool as hell.” Like they have this thing they think I’m like stuck-up or they think that no you cant really talk to her I’m like “no, I’m so cool you have no idea.” I don’t really get to many awkward fans. I would love something like that though because I’m awkward. I’m very awkward so I would like for y’all to be awkward with me to. 12. Most memorable moment on set? [Torrei laughs] I got to kill Benizo on set I know that so bad. Shout out to Benizo in our movie Turnt that I

I always make sure I’m going over my lines because that’s the main thing because the more I know my lines the more comfortable I am in getting into the character.

executive produced and starred in with me, Jamal Woolard, Benizo, and a few other people. You know I’ve always wanted to kill somebody sounds crazy I know but I got that moment to shoot him and I had a bad ass saying afterwards so that would be my most memorable moment. 13. How do you prepare for a role? I just go over my lines. Do the character breakdown. I put myself in the character situation like okay how would this person act? What’s the person background? How did they grow up? How were their parents? What do they like to eat? What motivates them? What are their daily habits? I really submerged myself into it to turn into the character. I always make sure I’m going over my lines because that’s the main thing because the more I know my lines the more comfortable I am in getting into the character. So doing the back-story of the character and making sure I know my lines so I can be free when delivering them. 14. Thoughts on the CoronaVirus? [Torrei Laughs] I am a superhuman. I rarely get sick. So I look at this like okay CoronaVirus. First of all I have melonite so nothing coming to me. I rebuke you

44 |

5th year Anniversary Issue

CoronaVirus you stay over there with that shit. I don’t really take it to serious. They calling it a pandemic now but I’m not claiming that. The more serious it gets I’m probably going to go stock up on some food or something and go get some more water and stuff like that. I don’t understand what does the CoronaVirus have to do with toilet paper? Why are people fighting over toilet paper? What does that have to do with CoronaVirus. I’m not feeding into it. That’s how I feel about the CoronaVirus its just something to get us off track. 15. What is a day off like for Torrei? I play poker, I spend time with my kids, I shop, and I just relax most of the time on my days off. I like to go out to and club every now and then. But for the most part I just like to relax. 16. What are you working on? Right now I am actually out promoting my Skinny Bish Keto book. I am consistently in the clubs with my standup.

Twix Cookies & crème Twix has just re-released their cookies & crème flavor. It’s the same Twix on the outside but a whole new taste on the inside. So far I’ve seen the bar at Walmart, and local gas stations. I’ve only seen the shareable bar that includes 4 to go bars. A lot of stores still have not caught wave of the new Twix movement so grab one if you see one. I tried the bar myself and I liked the new bar but I don’t think its

better then the original Twix. The original Twix just hits differently. I was asked after trying the Twix cookies & crème bar is it better then Hershey’s cookies & crème bar? Absolutely not; not in a million years. But it is okay. Try one for yourself and be the judge. Written by: David Solis

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in music? When I was between the ages of 6 and 7 I fell in love with music because it allowed me to express myself. I was free to be creative and not hide who I was or what I was thinking. I pursued music as a career and as a gospel artist because of my faith. 2. How did the name come about? Promizz was once “Promiseâ€? which was an alias. It once represented a lost girl who believed life was defined by material things. However, similar to the biblical transformation, whenever God would choose someone he would sometime change his or her name as a representation of a new creation. So the spelling changed (Promizz) because the meaning is different and also the person. 3. Describe what it is like being both a mother and a musician? In the beginning it was

19 years ago, the world witnessed the tragic death of one of Hip Hop’s greatest female artists, “The L to the I Y A H.” Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton on January 16th, 1979, her dreams of becoming a female musician would soon become reality with the help of her aunt, Gladys Knight, American songwriter and singer, after an unsuccessful run in the 90’s competition, “Star Search”.

According to the 2001 ABC’s EyeWitness News report, Gladys Knight gave Aaliyah her very first opportunity performing on stage at a Las Vegas venue a couple of months following. “It was really kind of tough to go and tell people that’s not my niece” (Knight 2001). 4 years later Aaliyah claimed her fame with a hit song, “Back and Forth,” peaking number 1 on billboards music charts for 22 weeks. Her success continued with old school covers such as, “At Your Best,” originally written by The Isley Brothers in 1976 to Hip Hop classics like “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number” in 1995 and “If Your Girl Only Knew” in1996. With such success came great scandal, as her career was rocked by a controversial rumor sparked from a marriage certificate with her mentor at the

moment, R-Kelly and producer, circulating through tabloids; The Hip-Hop princess found salvation in her collaboration with Missy Elliot and Timberland, at the time, up and coming musicians. Together, the team would produce the masterpiece of an album, “One in a Million” in 1997. The album solidified a comeback for Aaliyah and created a milestone for the careers of Missy and Timberland.

Her success never stopped her private life, as she still continued to attend her high school, “Detroit High School for Fine Arts,” in which she continued to attend and graduated. Her around the way mentality and down to earth personality made her a lovable individual between staff and students alike. As stated in the biography, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by Christopher John Farley, “ Denise Davis-Cotton, the founder and principal of DSA, says Aaliyah was a standout student from the start” (Excerpt From Aaliyah Christopher John Farley). Her charismatic personality intertwined with her natural abilities to sing and dance made high school a breeze. Having reached incredible heights fame wise, while still maintaining an ordinary high school experience is what made Aaliyah that much

more memorable. Not only did she find success in music, but in film as well. Starting with soundtracks, she took part in the production of 1997 “Anastasia” singing the Academy Award nominated song, Journey to the Past Then after, collaborating with Timbaland and various artists to make the 1998 Dr. Dolittle Soundtrack. Hits like “Are you that somebody” skyrocketed through Billboard Hot 100. She made her official acting debut at the turn of the millennium co-starring with Jet-Li, Martial Artist, in “Romeo Must Die.” Of course, never straying away from the music, creating the timeless hit, “Try Again,” which not only secured her second Grammy nomination, but spellbound her audience with the martial art inspired music video. The stars were aligning for our Hip-hop princess as she scored the lead female role in the Sci-fi fantasy, “Queen of the Damned.” With the combination of work, negotiations for upcoming roles and the release of her third album self titled, the last thing needed to make her seemingly perfect to society was a lover. According to Christopher Farley’s book, “Aaliyah liked to advertise herself as available. She told Mademoiselle in April of 2000, “Hey, I haven’t been out on a date in a year!” (Excerpt From Aaliyah Christopher John Farley). Never would she imagine finding love with Hip-hop Mogul, Damon Dash. Dame sat down with Kenyatta, “The Hip-hop Motivator” about his experiences with Aaliyah. He discusses their relationship as starting off strictly platonic. They shared similar interests and shared the same private school experience. “She’ll give anyone a chance, but she could put you in the friend zone quickly,” Dash tells Kenyatta. “She was talking to Jay (Jay-Z, rapper) too, I met her in a different scene,” the mogul recalls. The two eventually sealed the deal July 4th of 2000 and from there Aaliyah would go on to face her challenges in the limelight with what Dame describes as

“with a real best friend” (The Hip-hop Motivator: Secrets to Ballin’). Saturday, August 25th 2001 as Aaliyah wrapped up her shoot for her smash hit, “Rock the Boat,” in the Bahamas, she would have never thought that those would be her final moments in the world. The production seemed routine for the Hip-hop Princess and even during the trip to Marsh Harbour Airport, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. A pilot who witnessed the horrific incident described to Christopher Farley the following, “I saw the plane go up and then it banked to the left and nosed in,” he told me. He said the plane was only “60 to 100 feet” off of the ground when it began its fatal dive” (Excerpt From Aaliyah Christopher John Farley). The plane crashed only moments after takeoff Killing the Hip-hop Princess, and 7 of her team members, and later the pilot of the aircraft. Her death took the world by surprise and immediately her close loved ones, friends, and fans were left forever mourning the music legend. 19 years later, the world still aches for Aaliyah and the charismatic presence that brought life to her music and beauty to the roles she played. Her essence still looms through the generations as we witnessed children born post that fatal day, engulfed in her fashion sense, personality, and songs. For the others, her absence reminds us all that life is precious and to make the most of it while you are here. DMX once told the world, “Dearest, sweet Aaliyah. I have trouble accepting the fact that you’re gone. So I won’t. It’ll be like we went for a while without seeing each other. But I can understand why God would have wanted you close to him. Cause you truly were an angel on earth. In my own special way, I love you and miss you.” We will all forever love and miss our Hip-Hop Princess, the L to the I Y A H. Written by: Belcie Breaux

Covid- 19 Did you know? The Coronavirus isn’t new. There have been many different strands since the 1960’s. Covid 19 is currently causing mass hysteria has similar properties as SARS in 2003 and MERS in 2012. Human to human transmission of Coronavirus is thought to occur during close contact of sneezing and coughing. Touching an object or surface with the virus and then touching your eyes, mouth, or nose will also transmit the virus. The best way to protect yourself is to stay home. If you have to go outside, wear a mask, and practice social distancing of at least 6 feet away from other people and wash your hands frequently. Activities All activities have been postponed to a later date and or canceled. Fines will be issued to groups of ten or more. Most schools are shut down for the reminder of the year and have transitioned to online learning and homeschool. All sports are canceled until further notice. All social and nonessential venues such as clubs, casinos, mall’s, shopping stores and just about anything you can think of that isn’t a necessity is closed. Restaurants are open for takeout and delivery only. Grocery stores are open and are getting new shipments in everyday. The first week there were massive long lines, empty

shelves, people fighting over simple necessities like tissue, baby wipes, disinfectant wipes, baby formula, water, and so much more you wouldn’t believe it. Luckily the chaos in grocery stores has subsided. The current stay at home order should be lifted on May 15th however, it is unclear if things will be going back to normal. Politics While the country is coming to a standstill because of Coronavirus disease, democracy is still going on. You might have wondered are the elections still going on? The answer is yes but as you know things are changing by the hour. In recent news, Louisiana was the first state to announce they would be delaying its primary election. They will now be voting on June 20th. Could this be something to throw citizens off? Mask It is unclear weather wearing a facemask will prevent the Coronavirus from entering your system however there is at least one guaranteed benefit. Mask are the best way to block your own hands from touching your eyes, nose and mouths, thus it will help with transmitting unwanted germs into your body. Also, when purchasing a mask, the best choice is the N95 mask. Although those mask are harder to breathe through, they help prevent respiratory diseases

such as the Coronavirus. Can’t find a facemask? Use a bandanna to make one. If you aren’t sure how to do it, YouTube has tutorials. If you visit your local doctor/ hospital ask for a medical facemask and they should provide you one for free. Internet The Internet has been taking the coronavirus to the next level with the number of skits, memes, songs, challenges, and post about it. If you log on Instagram within the ten post you’re guaranteed to see something about the virus. A number of celebrities have made the headlines by testing positive for the virus. The list continues to grow. Someone took an Instagram post of Cardi B where she said “Coronavirus sh*t is real, sh*t is getting real,” The video was remixed into a song produced by DJ imarkkeyz who also created the #caronaviruschallenge on TikTok and instagram. Americans Americans could receive more than $1,200 from the government depending on how long the crisis last. Trump is pushing a bill to send relief to tax payers within the next few weeks. He wants to send $1,200 to every adult and $500 to each child. If the COVID-19 crisis is still considered a national emergency six weeks later the payments might be sent out again.

Is food a little low with since the kids have been home all day? It wasn’t until 12:30 that kamaiyah finally made her way to Complex! Her entourage was first to hit the stage and continued to hype the crowd by dancing until kamaiyah was ready. Kamaiyah hit the stage with her bobble head as the crowd went crazy to see her. To begin her set, she let the crowd know it was only right that she came back home for her album release celebration. Kamaiyah went in with a bang performing her first song from the album called “Pressure” the crowd was stoked and knew the words. Kamaiyah performed two other songs from her new album and 3 classics from her old album including “Im On” “How does it feel” and hit “Fuck it up” ft YG. Behind the scenes cover shoot with

Torrei Hart March 12th, 2020 it went down. Untouchable Magazine got invited on Torrei Hart’s private jet. The memory was priceless and the experience will never be forgotten. The team boarded the jet about 3:00 PM and it was beyond your wildest dreams. Instead of individual seats like a regular plane her private jet had white fancy couch’s. She had her own table on the jet where she could handle business, eat, or do whatever. She
