It’s Barton Fitzpatrick A.K.A Barton, A.K.A Bart the actor. I am one of the stars of one of the ShowTime series “The Chi” and I am here in Los Angeles right now making it happen.

12 |

Issue 13

I am very funny. I am very silly. I play such a menacing character on “The Chi” but I’m probably the biggest goofball you ever met in your life absolutely.

1. How was it as a Chicago actor moving to Hollywood? Well, I have a bit of a different story I’m not an actor who came out here to pursue acting. I was fortunate enough to become a star. Booking roles in my own city. So coming out here is actually easy to take the meetings that I’m taking and have the auditions and opportunities. 2. What do you do outside of entertainment? My main focus is entertainment. I’m also a singer as well. So I have a single that’s out now titled “Simplicity” on all music platforms. It has also been

placed on “The Chi” episode seven. 3. What inspired you to create music? I’ve always been a singer my whole life but I wanted to use acting as a platform to be able to have a thing going for myself before releasing music so it would be easier. 4. Do you think it is more beneficial if artist use acting as a platform? Not necessarily acting but whatever platform could just blow them up as fast as possible to give them that name, following, and fan base to go right into music.

Issue 13

| 13

5. Any advice you would offer to anyone just starting out? As far as acting you know I started on the stage I started doing theater. Not a lot of actors started off that way. It’s a difference between being on stage for an hour and a half memorizing all those lines in live performance where as you have take-one, take- two on the set. So I would say do as many independent films, plays, and you know just do your research I used Google to help me out. 6. Explain to everyone what “The Chi” is and how you landed your role on the show? “The Chi” is a story about the Southside of Chicago it’s abbreviated as just “The Chi”. It follows a dozen different characters and we all start to interrelate as the season slowly progresses and we are all connected through one incident, which is murder that happens in the first episode. The same casting directors had already booked me for two other shows previously then “The Chi”. I’ve booked “Chicago Justice” and “Chicago Med” and once those casting directors got the call for “The Chi” they pretty much said we got the guy for the role and that is how I ended up doing that.

9. What’s Next? We actually just got green lighted for a season three. We are now production. Just been out here in Los Angeles auditing I got some movies lined up. A lot of filming dates conflict my schedule on “The Chi” so that is kind of why you haven’t seen me in like too many other projects. My plan is to transcend into a movie star.

7. Has a film director ever said you had to have sex with them to be in their film? No, that’s never happened to me ever. Never. 8. What is one thing about you that your fans don’t know? I am very funny. I am very silly. I play such a menacing character on “The Chi” but I’m probably the biggest goofball you ever met in your life absolutely.

The Marathon Continues by Christina “Euphrates” Jones

On August 1st The Marathon Clothing Store found itself encapsulated by a wire link fence to keep the community out of what has become a makeshift monument of Nipsey Hussle’s life and legacy. The Marathon is not like any other clothing store because of its involvement with Nipsey’s self made movement. It serves as the cornerstone of success that was built from the ground up. In his Forbes interview he discusses why the store is widely accepted and appreciated by the community of South Central. The community watched him hustle in the same parking lot where he became an owner after a lot of hard work and dedication. It has been rumored that the now hallowed ground is being prepped to become a monument to the artist’s life. It also comes at a time where The Marathon has come under fire and investigation for gang activity. These allegations makes us ask why now? Many can speculate, but it leaves one to wonder about The Marathon Clothing Store’s impact on its community and the world at large.

The Flagship Every rapper has his or hers known hangouts. Hussles’ was The Marathon Clothing Store located at the popular corner of Crenshaw and Slauson. He officially opened the store in June of 2017 with the community and his colleagues in the rap game there by his side. The motive was also to show the people of his community that he was there and that ownership could be homegrown. He also found a way to infuse his brand with his music and technology. Moreover, the items that his fan base could acquire at a brick and mortar store set The Marathon Clothing store apart from its competitors. By using the app the consumer/fans could access videos and content that would not otherwise be out. Since Hussle’s death the flagship has served as a memorial in itself. Fans from all over the world filled the parking lot of the store to mourn together and place candles, balloons and other items of significance in the slain rappers honor. People

The race is not given to the swift/ but to him who endures to the end. - Ecclesiastes 9:11 from all around are still ascending upon it til this day. The Numbers According to NewsOne the store has generated over $10M in revenue since Hussle’s tragic death. The store has even had to shut down in order to keep up with the demands. Though insiders say that the store always had a steady stream of online orders, they say that it pales in comparison to the numbers that they are doing now. In May the store’s IG page thanked customers and asked for their patience due to the influx of orders. Merchandising has come a long way since rockers first started selling tees after concerts. Nipsey turned his merchandise and store into an experience that will last a lifetime for his fans. His clothing represents a movement and a state of mind. According to Revolt, all of the profits from the clothing store will go to an investment fung called “Our Opportunity” to help community leaders in large “black cities” develop projects that help create change in a systematic way. If that’s not the Marathon continuing then I don’t know what is.

1. How did the name come about? I was like trying to find something that was like cute and catchy. So I looked into my heritage. My mother is Creole, my name transcribes into “Okay Vudu.” I also liked the way that dolls looked so I just kind of put the two together. 2. How do people react when you tell them your name? It’s like a mixture. They’re like “oh, that’s really cool or it’s oh do you do Vudu?” it’s like one or the other. 3. Take readers back to when you were a kid and felt sheltered with no friends. How was it growing up in a religious cult? It’s hard because it is not

anything I could compare it to, it was just how I lived my whole life. I always felt like we were all different and it was really difficult for me because I’ve always felt lonely and odd. There was so much I didn’t know and it sucked. 4. What turned you on to erotic art? Because I was so sheltered, I found fascination with things that were considered taboo and one of the things I discovered was Shunga. It’s like a Japanese form of pornography. When I saw that, I was actually like, “This is quite beautiful.” The way they view sex an art form, I really appreciated that so I incorporated that into my art.

5. In what other ways do you express yourself besides art? Mostly through fashion. I love to wear make up. I just kind of like myself. 6. What was it about girls that made you attracted to them at such a young age in your life? It would have to be Xena, there was a scene on Xena: Warrior Princess and I don’t know I just saw it and I was like, “Okay I think I might like girls.” That was when I first knew. [Vudu laughs] Growing up I was always told that, “You’re either one thing or the other.” So because I liked girls I thought I was a lesbian for a long time. It wasn’t until I got older and I actually realized I liked

everything. That took a bit of soul searching. 7. How did everyone respond when you came out the closet? They were not too happy about it. 8. In todays world, which do you prefer? Either or, I really don’t have a preference. 9. What was it like growing up in Seattle? I hated it. I wanted to get out as soon as I possibility could. I’ve always seen myself in a area where it’s like sunny and a different vibe for me. Seattle reminds me of just depression.

10. Tell us more about your “Is my girl” profile? Haha, so I like to be naked and I do take a lot of tasteful nude photos. I was approached by Ink Magazine to be a part of their sister website called “Is My Girl” and they are like, “You might as well make money from it.” And I was like “Yeah, why not.” So I just started doing it. It’s like mostly for fun. 11. How many tattoos do you have in total and which one hurt the most? I actually don’t know how many I have but I am almost completely covered. The ones that hurt the most would be the ones on my knees. Those were excruciating.

I want to get back into painting. It would be really cool to do my first showing at a gallery.

12. How did you land yourself on Black Ink Compton? I actually worked with someone who had connections and I did a Skype interview and next thing I knew I was in. 13. So far what are your thoughts on the show? I like it. I was not too familiar with Compton. When I came here I wasn’t sure what to think of it. It is a nice little town I feel like the people are pretty close nit. I like it 14. What brought you to California? I moved from Seattle to work out of a shop and from that shop, I was discovered to work at Black Ink. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

15. Tell us about the biggest hurdle you faced in life? The biggest hurdle I faced was rehabilitating myself into society. Since I was so sheltered when I was younger, I didn’t know anything so I had to learn a lot of really hard lessons. I’ve faced a lot of roadblocks that were tough for me to get past. 16.Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Owning my own tattoo shop or maybe just like traveling all over the world. I want to get back into painting. It would be really cool to do my first showing at a gallery.

Big Sean - Single again

Rick Ross - Big Tyme ft. Swizz Beatz .

With a piano melody starting the track off. His singing melody pulls you in. A quick bop as soon as the beat drops. An empowering track to embrace being single. A clever video and the multiple ways he expressed his message with the visuals like the rose filled trash truck. The symbolism and artistry is a way of expressing how love is a double-ended sword at times. Big Sean expresses being heart broken but growing from the pain. Not being sad or angry and seeing it in a positive light. In the video we have two cameos appearances from Ryan Destiny and Keith Powers who are actually a couple in real life. They ironically play a couple in the video. It made the video more special. The video shows women accusing men of cheating. It shows how many times woman jump the gun because of rumors and false allegations. He also allows a clip of comedy scene in the video. The way Big Sean is aware of pop culture and he incorporated the new saying “Black Men Don’t Cheat” allows us to break a stereotype and also allowing Charlemagne The God (Breakfast club host) & Duval (artist) to get recognition. It shows how the African American community is always getting closer and raising awareness through music and media. Even though the saying started off as a joke they intend to capitalize on it and find a way to make it positive.

Classic Rozay! A old school flow and poetic. Ross speaks on life events and giving thanks to God. Big Tyme is definitely a banger. The ladies can dance on the fellas to this. Swizz Beats a legendary producer provides an amazing beat for Ross to demolish. The video was very clever and authentic to Ross artistry. He always executes great visuals making you feel like your watching a movie. The appearance from Ms. Woods was a clap-back for our culture as a beautiful Afro- Queen was the main star of the video and not as a vixen but as a model. Jordyn Woods faced some recent backlash in the media from a scandal regarding the Kardashian’s. The scandal could’ve made her career go left. It’s not just the message it’s the delivery. Port of Miami III will be dropping soon. So expect another single soon. Reviewed by: Kameron A Sitgraves

Chris Brow – Heat ft. Gunna Chris Brown never disappoints his fans. Everything he drops is a hit. We all know that. Him and Gunna collaborated on a new smash for 2019. The catchy hook grabs listeners immediately as Chris takes you on a musical journey. If you watched the video then you seen Brown’s Michael Jackson dances moves. The studio the video was shot in is off the chains. The video was reached 5 million views and counting in just three days so you can already image the impact it is about to make. This is a must play, the video is a must see, and it’s a must that you put this on repeat. Written by: David Solis

Megan Thee Stallion - Hot Girl Summer ft. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign

YNW BSlime “Gucci Belt” This 13-year-old rapper came with a new twist in hip-hop. This song is titled “Gucci Belt” he talks how he wants his girl tied to his hip like a Gucci belt. He sings raps on his verses some may think he’s a singer and other may think he is a rapper. The creativity behind the music video was amazing. He had tons of fun I don’t want to ruin it so I will let you check it out. Head over to Youtube right now.

Artist: Lil Tjay Song: F.N (official video)

Megan just released her Hot Girl Summer music video and oh must I say it was fasho a Hot Girl Summer. All your favorite celebrities such as Juicy J, French Montana, Lala, Danileigh, and much more feature in it. This shoot took place in a large mansion. Nicki Minaj goes all out in the music video with her wardrobe wearing nearly nothing. Her ass of course is phenomenal but there was one lucky guy who got the chance to grip/grab it during the music video. His hands were not able to cover that entire ass. Make sure you check out the video asap as Megan Thee Stallion, Ty Dolla $IGN & Nicki Minaj do their thing.

Lil Tjay did his thing on this song. First lets start with the video. He is riding in the backseat of a cop car around his city. Tjay is having flashbacks of a court case of his homie snitching on him and giving the cops his name. Someone he was once close with and was a brother with. The video goes perfect with the song. As far as the song goes it’s a great quality song with todays swag. His message is clear “Fuck Niggas” and he explains how every ones wants to fuck with him for benefits. He talks about a situation that happened and why he doesn’t fuck with nigga’s and why he don’t trust them any more. I could say so many great things about this song but I recommend you check it out for yourself.

ZaZa- What I do This little girl has all the little kids on one with her new single “What I Do”. ZaZa came out of nowhere with her single there also a video to match watch she takes over the playground and is the center of attention in the mosh pit. She is stunting on her hater in her Mercedes jeep. I can’t wait to see what this song does. Written by: David Solis

Jeezy- 1 Time “One Time” is like a knock at the door. With an intro feel & catchy chorus. I think he should’ve made this a two-minute song maximum. It could’ve been more depth in the lyrics. The song doesn’t feel like a classic. The lyrics to me seem to be the repetitive & same message in every line. The video and effects were a shootout, police chase, and jail yard. It didn’t tell a story which was a little disappointing. Being a Jeezy fan he delivered an ok Jeezy single. I need that “Okay with me” Jeezy “Trap Star” I just want the lyrics to hold more meaning. We need more than just hearing about the snowman. We need to hear growth and a track like “My President is black.” I know an album is coming so I know this is just a sample. Regardless Jeezy will deliver and no matter what happens he already has made his mark and has his core fans like me will support regardless. His second single is MLK Blvd in which pays homage to MLK Jr. Reviewed by: Kameron A Sitgraves

3. Apple Watts: How do it feel for people to be like “Why in the fuck you on Love & Hip-Hop? When you have a whole background?” And I say why not. Why not? People want to know why and I want to ask you why not? I do it everyday. It’s what I do. That’s the reason we have a generation gap right now because people feel like when they get to a certain place; they feel like they don’t belong. I belong every place I step my foot in. God has given me a gift and I am so happy to be able to just share it and continue it. You know because it can easier be gone. You can easier be out of pocket so many people have came and gone and the fact that you can remain relevant in the game, being able to relate and be relatable, that’s the shit.

Michael Jackson 10 year Anniversary This year Michael Jackson’s turned 60 year old; we have also reached the 10-year mark of when the legend left this earthly plane. Most people cannot believe it’s been that long since we’ve seen MJ because he still lives on in the hearts of many. What is for certain is that even in his death his legacy and influence still lingers on today. Legacy Chances are even though MJ passed away ten years ago there are tons of 9 year olds and younger who can croon a Michael Jackson song like it is their own. This thought crossed my mind when I saw a 5 year old at my friend’s daycare singing and dancing to Thriller like they were present in the 80’s when the song dropped. I was in awe of the fact that this kid had never been alive while Michael

This can be attributed to the fact that every artist to date cites MJ as one of their influences. I mean how can he not be when he dominated the charts in the 60’s and 70’s as a kid and then as an adult he dominated the charts all the way up to his demise? There is nowhere on this entire planet where a person does not know who MJ was and has not been affected by his music. This is a great testament to the type of music that he created. He left music behind that is timeless.

statement typically begins with a person recalling where they were when they heard the news. I myself get taken back to having recently moved to Atlanta and living on the Northside of town. I was on my way to the studio on Jimmy Carter Parkway and the radio announced it. My best friend and I couldn’t believe it. Minutes on our phones were not free yet, but people were steadily calling to confirm if we had gotten the news. In short spurts we confirmed and it seemed as if time stood still. We definitely were in denial for the moment.

The News When speaking of MJ’s death most people instantly get a glazed over look in their eyes and they are catapulted back into time as if they have a virtual time machine. The next

We went and grabbed some Wendys and the line was abuzz with the news as well. People seemed delirious in a way that I had never seen before. I eventually ended up at the studio and I was greeted by

I don’t think too much recording went on that day. We all kind of sat in awe together watching CNN unfold the days events on a big screen. That day a piece of our childhood died. Where were you when you heard? Posthumously Since his death, music sales have skyrocketed. According to Billboard Magazine, MJ has sold 6.1 million albums. His songs have been streamed 5.9 million times since his death and he has shown up on Billboards top 200 continuously. Music is not the only influence that he has shown huge numbers

on Cirque Du Soleil’s: Micheal, also made roughly 3.6 million dollars in ticket sales. This Is It, the documentary about Jackson’s final tour grossed 101 million dollars in its opening weekend and is still considered an acclaimed film that people have as collector’s items. Jackson’s music publishing company has also been said to be raking in a whopping 80 million a year. This is another indicator of MJ’s long-standing legacy. Afterthought A lot of controversy has clouded this artist’s life. However, I can say that before any bad thing was ever said about MJ, I was glad that he was one of ours. I used to have the jacket, the folders, pins, pencils and anything else MJ I could

get my hands on. He was a star shining brightly before our eyes letting us know that the sky was the limit. In light there has to be dark. How would you ever know of light’s presence without it? MJ’s story has certainly taught us that as well. Moreover, I am sure that was his motive behind it all. It was to show us an icon and a human, a musical genius trapped inside a little boy that never had the chance to fully grow. Furthermore, even in destitute situations he had the power to unite the world to dream of a brighter day for you and me. That my friends is a true star and this is why MJ will be remembered until the end of time. by Christina “Euphrates” Jones

Ah man, being able to retire my mom and my grandma that was twenty years ago and I’m just excited at this point to be a philanthropist and a multimillionaire I believe we should all give back you know we should all be ashamed to die unless we made a contribution to society. So I am blessed to be a blessing. 2. Advice? Find your area of excellences. The two most important times in anybody’s life is where we were born and when we found out why we were born. Most memorable moment as a Power Ranger? Getting the toys made of my face. That was kind of cool. It was just like the little flip heads with Zack. Yeah so I don’t know I thought that was pretty cool.

Founders Note up done so we all talked and got to know one another. Then right after the shoot began. We were able to pull off three looks in one hour then wrapped it up with the exclusive interview you read. I learned so much about her during the time we were together. Can’t wait to see what is next for you.

I would like to begin by first giving an honor to god who is truly ahead of my life. Continue to use me in your name to spread love and positivity across the world. As I sit back and write this letter I reminisce on such a good month we had. We did so much in so little time and the grind doesn’t stop here. I decided to let Vudu Dahl from the new reality show Black Ink Compton on VH1 grace our cover. It was dope working with her. We worked at a studio in downtown Los Angeles. I decided to take the photos and do the interview myself. The whole vibe was cool and it was super dope working with her. The first 45 minutes she got her make

I hope you all enjoyed our exclusive interview with the one and only Apple Watts from VH1’s Love & Hip-Hop Hollywood. I wanted her interview to turn some head and also be real because a lot of celebrities fake the funk and don’t really answer the question. Shout out to Apple Watts for showing love and keeping it one hundred in her interview. Thank you for the invite to your party we wish you nothing but the best. The big homie Barton Fitzpatrick I actually met him through a good friend of mine by the name of Kris D. Lofton from HBO’s Ballers. I got the chance to interview and take Barton photo shoot and after that I started seeing him around at events. When I went to Kris D. Lofton party and I heard him sing I was blown away and couldn’t believe he had that voice. Everyone make

some to check him out on “The Chi” on Showtime. It is always a pleasure working with YOYO. If you don’t remember we featured YOYO in our 6th issue. I first met her at the Women behind the legends event about 2-3 years ago where I had a chance to meet and interview her for the very first time. YoYo was actually one of the first big interviews we did while we was coming up and she showed up nothing but love and for that I am forever thankful. This wraps up this issue. I really hope everyone enjoyed this issue. I always like to keep everyone guessing on what to expect in every issue.
