On the LOCAL SCENE

New Local Digital Content

If you have gone to any craft fairs or art markets recently, chances are you have seen Abbey Bell there. Her art stands out in a crowd due to its unique style which is a mixture of dark and cutesy. Her primary focus is creating arrangements of organic materials inside found objects. She uses sticks, stones, grass, flowers, animal bones and taxidermy to create beautiful scenes inside old glass receptacles or discarded decor such as the lantern pictured here.

Milwaukee PBS is proud to be part of a new curriculum available to teachers around the state emphasizing our rich state history. This program, developed by the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance, highlights the Milwaukee Soldier’s home which is the subject of our A HALLOWED HOME FOR HEROES production.

The documentary steps back in time to uncover the fascinating story of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home, a National Historic Landmark. Its origins trace back to President Abraham Lincoln’s last Executive Order and an overlooked group of young women who were feminists before their time.

Vice President and General Manager of Milwaukee PBS Debbie Hamlett noted, “We're proud to have captured the historical significance of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home in our documentary A HALLOWED HOME FOR HEROES and to have inspired the creation of this curriculum.”

How We Heal

In a country battling a loneliness epidemic, many men feel disconnected, weighed down by the stigma that prevents them from seeking help for their mental health. In this Milwaukee PBS special, Elizabeth Cramer shares the stories of three local men who have defied these barriers and found a way to heal.

COVER STORY:

Miss Austen on Masterpiece

There are few things more fascinating or enduring than a real-life mystery. MISS AUSTEN takes one of the most prominent literary mysteries in history – Cassandra Austen notoriously burning her famous sister Jane’s letters – and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heartbreaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine. In Miss Austen, the drama begins in 1830, many years after Jane has died. Cassandra rushes to visit Isabella, the niece of her long-dead fiancé, who is about to lose her home following her father’s death. Cassandra is ostensibly there to help Isabella, but her real motive is to find a hidden bundle of private letters which, in the wrong hands, she fears could destroy Jane’s reputation. On discovering them, Cassandra is overwhelmed as she is transported back to her youth. In flashback, we meet Young Cassy and Jane as they navigate the romantic infatuations, family feuds and dashed hopes which shaped their lives, and laid the foundations for Jane’s unforgettable stories. Cassandra’s re-evaluation of her past eventually leads her to find a way to guide Isabella towards the path of true happiness. MISS AUSTEN, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Gill Hornby, is adapted by British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awardwinning writer Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth is Missing, Mayflies).

MISS AUSTEN will air in four episodes on MASTERPIECE on PBS starting Sunday, May 4, 8PM on 10.1. The timing is nothing less than thrilling as 2025 also marks 250 years since Jane Austen was born.

An exceptional cast has been assembled to tell the riveting story of MISS AUSTEN. Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, The Durrells in Corfu) stars as Cassandra Austen and Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) as Isabella Fowle. Synnøve Karlsen (Last Night in Soho), Patsy Ferran (Living), Max Irons (The Wife), Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton) and Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey) are all also part of the star-studded cast.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Lauren Kolb and Erik Stowers

A Common Passion for Knowledge and Education

Lauren Kolb and Erik Stowers live in Pewaukee, Wisconsin with their three boys: Jonah (13), Solomon (11) and baby Gideon. Erik works as a Financial Advisor and Wealth Manager for HighPoint Planning Partners Group and prior to that was a private client advisor with JP Morgan. Lauren began her teaching career in Chicago Public Schools and now teaches 1st grade in Hartland, Wisconsin.

Lauren and Erik come from different professional worlds, but they share a common passion: making knowledge and education accessible to all.

Erik, a seasoned financial advisor, helps individuals and families build secure futures. Lauren, as a school teacher, has dedicated her life to helping students build strong educational foundations in reading, writing, math and critical thinking. Together, they see Milwaukee PBS as a bridge—connecting people of all ages to trusted news, educational resources, and cultural enrichment. “It’s the world’s biggest classroom.”

“We love watching PBS Passport and PBS KIDS in our home. Milwaukee PBS offers a quality source of enrichment outside the classroom,” Lauren says. “Programs like READING RAINBOW and MR. ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD sparked my own childhood curiosity. I’ve enjoyed seeing that same spark in my older children as they have gone from loving DANIEL TIGER and WILD KRATTS to their newest interests in ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, NATURE, and any wartime documentary. We are all excited to revisit our childhood favorites as baby Gideon gets older. I believe there is value in supporting Milwaukee PBS to make sure it’s around for children and families for years to come.”

Lauren and Erik are annual donors and longtime viewers of Milwaukee PBS. We are grateful for donors like Erik and Lauren, whose generosity ensures that public media continues to uplift, inform, and inspire.
