M A S K UP, M AV S! UNO will continue to require masks, social distancing, and limited gatherings on campus, despite recent changes to the state’s directed health measures. One of the most effective tools we have in the fight against COVID-19 is also one of the most readily available: face masks. As a reminder, all students, faculty, staff, and visitors are required to wear a face covering when on university property.

LOOKING AHEAD FALL 2021 The fall 2021 semester will be here before we know it. Looking forward, the chancellor is confident in what he sees. In an email to the UNO community on Jan. 22, Chancellor Gold said:
"I write you today confident that we will safely return to a new normal with vibrant in-person teaching, working, and learning operations beginning with the fall 2021 semester." He highlighted three main reasons for this confidence: 1. The successful development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines through the spring and summer months will significantly limit the spread of the COVID-19 infection. 2. Significantly enhanced COVID-19 testing accuracy and capacity means we will be able to more closely monitor any campus spread and make necessary adjustments to promote campus safety.

3. The ability to very accurately track and respond to regional and campus COVID-19 transmission rates provides an opportunity for early and effective intervention.
For a special edition of the Maverick Minute, Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., responded to three frequently asked questions from students, faculty, and staff regarding the university’s plans for the Fall 2021 semester.
As we move through the Spring semester, UNO will continue to monitor and respond with updates and planning details as they evolve and change.
During the segment, Gold answered, questions about documenting underlying health conditions, in-person teaching, working, and learning requirements, and classroom occupancy. The CDC is actively reviewing the data on social distancing in classrooms based upon the science of transmission in the classroom environment.

FA L L 2021 ENROL L MEN T Remind your student to enroll for the fall 2021 semester. Students should set up an appointment with their advisor to identify the best classes to take this fall. Enrollment for the fall semester begins March 29. Go online to identify when your student can enroll and encourage them to reach out to their advisor to prepare! Specific enrollment dates will be noted in your student’s MavLINK account.

Paul Davis' Urban Health Opportunities Program, or UHOP, looks to crack the mold from which most physicians emerge. Medicine is a field that serves an extremely broad population, making diversity in health care critical. Health disparities affect segments of the population differently, and attitudes toward health care and treatment vary among different groups. Diversity allows physicians to better understand patients within a larger context—such as their upbringing or socioeconomic realities. When a patient can’t find providers that resemble them, their culture, or other facets of their life, it can delay or prevent them from seeking timely care.
Supporting First-Generation Students Davis’s skills and interests put him in the perfect position to help UNO students become better prepared for health careers. 37 percent of students at UNO are first-generation students; their parents did not attend college. This means they need unique mentorship and support to prepare them for medical school, and Davis was determined to create a program to help them. He now serves as director of the Urban Health Opportunities Program (UHOP), a pipeline program he helped create that puts UNO undergrads from underrepresented groups on the road to medical school.

“There’s a great deal of support offered to UHOP students,” said Davis. “For some, their parents haven’t gone to college—imagine the complexities helping them prepare for medical school. We offer not only financial support but help in preparing them for what’s ahead.”
