CAMPUS HEALTH MEASURES WILL CONTINUE FOLLOWING NEW CDC GUIDANCE FOR VACCINATED PEOPLE

UNO continues to require masks, social distancing, and limited gatherings on campus, despite recent changes to the state’s directed health measures.
Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. looks forward to conferring the degrees to candidates from all colleges during a series of de-densified inperson ceremonies. UNO will accommodate this by planning to conduct several ceremonies, in which graduates will be recognized during their respective college’s ceremony.
Although masking and distancing policies remain in effect on the UNO and UNMC campuses, new guidance issued on March 8 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) allows for some relaxation in restrictions at home. According to this new CDC guidance, people who are fully vaccinated can now safely gather indoors with other fully vaccinated people without wearing masks or social distancing. It is important to note that people are not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after they have received the second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines (or two weeks after receiving the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Vaccinated people can also gather, unmasked, with people from another household who are not yet vaccinated, as long as those people are at low risk of serious illness from the virus. However, vaccinated people should continue to mask when they’re in public (including on the UNO and UNMC campuses), avoid crowds and take other precautions when gathering with unvaccinated people who are at high risk of serious illness from COVID-19.

STUDENT LEADERS REFLECT ON THE PAST YEAR One year ago this month, UNO pivoted to remote teaching, learning, and working in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Student Body President Jabin Moore and Student Body Vice President Vanessa Chavez Jurado were at the forefront of the university’s response. Now, the pair reflects on a historic year of challenges, triumphs, lessons learned, and opportunities.

After receiving some important feedback the decision has been made to transfer our current student Google/gMAV system, including emails, calendars, and contacts, into Microsoft's Outlook platform. This transition took place at the end of March. While a student's actual email address will not change as a result of this transition, the student will be able to take advantage of the following benefits: • A larger amount of storage for attachments and files • Smoother collaboration with faculty and staff through common software tools and alignment to other projects, like the current transition from Box to Microsoft for storage • Enhanced ability to schedule meetings between students and faculty • Cost factors related to maintaining and securing separate email applications

• Focused help desk support around a single platform (versus supporting multiple) • Moving to a common email and calendar solution, currently used by all the other University of Nebraska Campuses (M365). A student will not need to take any action to make these changes. During the migration the student will receive an email from Microsoft 365 with instructions on how to access their email. Students will continue to have access to their gMAV accounts until the full transition is completed.

Point of Pride
A RECIPE FOR RESILLIENCE Troy Romero started his UNO story as a first-generation student in 1992. Today he is the chair of the Goodrich Scholarship Program, the same program that helped support him decades ago. The University of Nebraska at Omaha has been Troy Romero’s home for nearly 40 years - in more ways than one. In early March, Romero, whose doctorate is in psychology, began his tenure as chair of the Goodrich Scholarship Program. It's a role that he's seemingly been working towards his entire life, though he never would have thought so when he was a Goodrich Scholar himself, in the early 1990s. "I didn't take college seriously enough," he says. "I knew it was important, and I was capable of doing the work, but I just wasn't ready." The Goodrich Scholarship Program was formed nearly 50 years ago to support students who were high-achieving but otherwise at risk to finish their degrees. In that regard, John Bartle, Ph.D., the dean of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, which houses Goodrich, says Romero's story is a true success story. "It is poetic that we have produced our own leader. It is not just the pay-off of an investment, but it is a realization of the dream of the founders of Goodrich: Senator Glenn Goodrich, and CPACS Founding Dean Hubert Locke, as well as many others."
