Latin@’s en STEM es una organización que se esfuerza por promover a los estudiantes latinos / hispanos y de otras minorías que entren en carreras de STEM y que obtengan empleos en carreras de STEM. Asistimos a la conferencia de la Sociedad Nacional de Ingenieros Profesionales Hispanos todos los años, donde los miembros que asisten pueden obtener asesoramiento profesional e ir a talleres de desarrollo organizados por empleados de las compañías Fortune 500 más grandes del país.

We attend the National Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers conference every year, where members that attend can get career advice and go to development workshops hosted by employees of the country's biggest Fortune 500 companies.

He jugado videojuegos desde que era niño.

Sabía que era lo que quería hacer. Escribiendo en un idioma extraño para hacer una pantalla hacer cosas maravillosas y extrañas, es fascinante. I’ve played video games since I was kid. I knew it was what I wanted to do. Typing in an odd language to make a screen do wondrous, bizarre things is fascinating.

Adjusting a program to exactly what I want it do can be both infuriating and time-consuming, but when you get it, when everything clicks into place, you get a feeling of euphoria and accomplishment.

Thanks to the connections I made at the college, I was able to get a job pretty quickly out of college. I can’t see me doing anything else.

UNO estaba cerca de casa y uno de los pocos lugares que ofrecían bioinformática. Siempre me ha gustado explorar el mundo que me rodea. Con la bioinformática soy capaz de hacer todo lo que disfruto y encontrar mi carrera de ensueño. Aquí, me siento empoderada como mujer en STEM (Ciencias, Technologia, Ingenieria, Matematica) y espero perseguir mas investigaciones científicas.

Planeo aprovechar delposgrado de 4 + 1 porque la escuela es importante y quiero aprender todo lo que pueda con mi tiempo aquí. Como la primera de mi familia en entrar en estudio de STEM, no es fácil, pero yo no lo cambiaría por el mundo.

UNO was close to home and one of the few places that offered Bioinformatics. I’ve always been fond of exploring the world around me, with Bioinformatics I am able to do everything I enjoy and find my dream career. Here, I feel empowered as a woman in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and hope to pursue scientific research.

I plan on taking advantage of the 4+1 graduate degree because school is important and I want to learn as much as I can with my time here. As the first of my family to go into STEM, it’s not easy but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

[Ciberseguridad] requiere que mires una situación desde la perspectiva de alguien con intenciones maliciosas. Te hace preguntarte: ¿Qué daño podrían hacer? ¿Cómo podemos prevenirlo? Es ese tipo específico de solución de problemas que me hace amar esta carrera profesional.

Llegué a la UNO porque estaba cerca de casa y tenía todos los temas que me interesaba estudiar. Podría estudiar criptografía por la mañana y ruso por la tarde. De hecho, hice eso. Tomar clases fuera de mi especialidad mantuvo las cosas interesantes y me llevó a descubrir otras materias en las que estaba interesada.

[Cybersecurity] requires you to look at a situation from the perspective of someone with malicious intentions. It causes you to ask yourself: What damage could they do?

How can we prevent it? It’s that specific type of problem solving that makes me love this career path.

I came to UNO because it was close to home and it had all of the topics that I was interested in studying...I could be studying Cryptography in the morning and Russian in the afternoon. In fact, I did do that. Taking classes outside of my major kept things interesting and led me to discover other subjects that I was interested in.

Al principio, yo quería entrar en cosmetología, pero me ha atraído la tecnología desde que obtuve mi primera computadora. No pense hasta que llegue a la escuela secundaria que la tecnología podría ser más que un pasatiempo. Elegí MIS porque tiene una mezcla de informática y negocios. Muchas empresas ahora requieren al menos un poco de conocimiento de las computadoras y los negocios, que con esta carerra te pondrá en la parte superior de la lista al solicitar un trabajo.

At first, I wanted to get into cosmetology, but I have been attracted to technology ever since I got my first computer. It didn’t hit me until high school that technology could be more than a hobby. I chose MIS because it has a mixture of both computer science and business. Many businesses now require at least a little bit of knowledge of computers and business, which with this degree will put you on the top of their list when applying for a job.

Thanks to several scholarships, I’m able to pay for my tuition, fees, and books, which has been a huge weight off my shoulders.

With IT Innovation, we are guided through the process of how to create an innovative product that solves a problem or need. Additionally, we are given the resources to make an entire business around the product...The IT Innovation major means freedom to pursue my own career.

En la escuela secundaria participé en la Copa de Innovación de IT, y realmente me interesó. Pensé que era la carrera perfecta para mí y La Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha es la única universidad que la ofrece.

In high school I participated in the IT Innovation Cup, and it really caught my interest. I thought that it was the perfect major for me and UNO is the only university that offers it.

Encender interés por la enseñanza de la informática en los estudiantes, sin importar su origen, es lo más destacado de mi carrera de instructor. Sé que hay un lugar para todos en nuestra universidad y disfruto ayudando a mis alumnos a encontrar su camino.

Igniting an interest and passion for computer science in students, no matter what their backgrounds, is a highlight in my teaching career. I know there’s a place for everyone in our college, and I enjoy helping my students find their path.
