D I R E C TO R ’ S N OTE S If you’re an actor, there will be a time in your life when you’re in a play where something goes wrong; props break, someone doesn’t know their lines, sound cues come in at the wrong time, etc. But it’s rare that everything goes wrong, and I mean everything! That’s the beauty of Mischief Theatre’s The Play That Goes Wrong - It’s a hilarious schadenfreude journey for the audience, but for the poor Cornley Drama Society it’s a matter of the “show must go on!” They so desperately want to deliver The Play That Goes Right!

When really it should stop and go back into rehearsals, maybe secure some of the set, and find the dog.

The cast and crew have been a joy to work with, as rehearsals consisted of playing various games and clown exercises. We explore being vulnerable and laughing at our own humanity, much like the actors in The Play That Goes Wrong, when they find themselves up the creek (without a paddle).

Early in the rehearsal process, one of the actors commented that rehearsing for the show was like acting with a Green Screen - because we were missing our eleventh cast member, namely the set- which has a life of its own. This playground has been a series of complicated puzzles solved by the production team, who are basically magicians. I hope you delight in it as much as we have.

MEET THE CAST & CREW ALI C E N E L SO N - D I R E C TO R Alice Nelson is part of the Faculty at the University of Windsor; teaching courses in Theatre for Young Audiences, Theatre for Social Action, Applied Theatre, and Improvisation.

Directing credits include The School for Husbands/The School for Wives (Red Deer University), The Underneath (Theatre BSMT), Three Little Pigs (New West), Hamlet (Shakespeare Company- outreach project), The Boy’s Own Jedi Handbook (Empress Theatre), Sleeping Beauty, Aesop Fables (Loose Moose Theatre), and Mockingbird Close (Lunchbox Theatre).

Last spring, she directed ten women to tell their stories of immigration to Canada in The Shoe Project: Taking New Steps in the Joy Family Theatre at the Capitol Theatre in Windsor.

JAC K SO N R . R . BALI NT - C H R I S Jackson R. R. Balint is in his final year of the BFA in Acting program and the current Club SODA President. Born and raised in Windsor, Jackson has performed in many local theatre and film productions. His most recent project was performing in the play Almost, Maine, where he had toured Ontario bringing professional theatre to rural areas. Jackson expresses his gratitude to his caring family, his wonderful partner Chloe, his admirable friends, and his cats Toast and Raspberry for all their love and support on and off the stage. “Keep your stick on the ice. It’s the only way you can score.”

Favourite roles include Brown Cesario in Camp Rock The Musical and Horton the Elephant in Seussical Jr. For UP: Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night. Thanks to my mom for her constant support.

NATA S HA F I S H MAN - SAN D R A Natasha is super excited to return to University Players for her third and final season! She will be playing Macbeth in Mac Beth and Sandra/Florence Colleymoore in The Play That Goes Wrong. She is especially grateful to work in the costume shop this season as well as Assistant Direct The Glass Menagerie. She would like to thank her professors, mentors, friends and family for their continuous support and guidance.

MEET THE CAST & CREW P E R L A ALE JAN D R A L AY MAN - TR E VO R Perla Alejandra Layman is in her fourth year of the BFA in Acting program and is excited to join the University Players’ 65th season. She performs in Mac Beth as Witch 1, Ross, Donalbain, Porter, Murderer 1, and Doctor, followed by The Play That Goes Wrong playing Trevor Watson. Perla would like to thank Jeff Marontate, Walter Cassidy, and Sarah Preney for guiding her to the path of performing arts, and her BFA ’24 classmates for taking that journey with her.

LI LLY BAT TI STA - AN N I E Lilly Battista is in her fourth and final year of the BFA Acting program at the University of Windsor. She is a theatre performer from Toronto, ON, and is grateful and beyond excited to be assistant directing Mac Beth, and portraying Annie the Stage Manager in The Play That Goes Wrong and Jo March in Little Women. K Y LI E VI O LET TE - A S S I STANT D I R E C TO R Kylie is a 4th year dramatic art student involved in many UP productions this season. This is her first time assistant directing a production and she is so grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside such a hilarious cast and crew! She has plans to stage manage UP’s next show, The Glass Menagerie, and end her university career with a bang! She wants to express her sincere gratitude to her friends and family who have supported her throughout her theatrical journey thus far.

MARY WI LK I N S - STAG E MANAG E R Mary is in her second year of the Concurrent Education/Drama program. Her previous UP shows include Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Tinkerbell, and most recently stage managed Twelfth Night. She is excited to be working on one of her favorite plays The Play That Goes Wrong. Mary thanks her friends and family for their continued support.

AGATHA K N E L S E N - COSTU M E D E S I G N E R Agatha is a proud alum of the University of Windsor, having graduated with a BA in Drama. She worked in professional theatre for over a dozen years before returning to play dress up for a living here.

Favourite designs include Les Liaisons Dangereuses (University of Windsor), Evita (Drayton Theatre), Pirates of Penzance (St. Jacob’s Theatre), The Boyfriend (Huron Country Playhouse), Jesus Christ Superstar (Chrysler Theatre), Pelagie (St. Clair College). Of her professional achievements, Agatha lists first that she still loves what she does for a living. Having designed well over 100 productions, each one has helped remind her how incredibly blessed she is to do what she does.

Select designs include Niizh (Native Earth), 3 Sisters, Entrances & Exits, & Punk Rock (Howland) Alice in Wonderland (Guild Festival), Goodnight Bird (Festival Antigonish), Othello (Driftwood), Of Human Bondage (Magnus), and Hamlet (Hart House). Nancy is a Dora nominee and a recipient of the Ian and Molly Lindsay Young Design Fellowship, a Tom Patterson Guthrie Award and a member of the Associated Designers of Canada. Past academic teaching and design work includes Mount Allison University, University of Windsor and Toronto Metropolitan University.

K I R STE N WAT T - LI G HTI N G D E S I G N E R Kirsten’s previous designs for University Players include: 365 Days/365 Plays, Beauty and the Beast, Othello, God of Carnage, The Penelopiad, Journey’s End, A Streetcar Named Desire, Mr. Burns, Big Love, The Dining Room, Lion in the Streets, and The Crucible. Elsewhere, Kirsten has designed lighting for: the Shaw Festival, Drayton Entertainment, the Segal, Centaur, Rideau Vert, Neptune, Watermark, Gros Morne Theatre Festival, Sudbury Theatre Centre, Magnus, Thousand Islands Playhouse, Green Light Arts, Carousel Players, Hart House, George Brown and Sheridan. Kirsten attained her Bachelor of Arts (Drama) from the University of Alberta, and specialized in lighting design at the National Theatre School of Canada.

VALE R I E BO NA S SO - P RO P S MA STE R Valerie Bonasso is graduate of the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Art earning a BA. She has also recently earned an MBA from the Odette School of Business which included an internship at the Cirque du Soleil HQ in Montreal. Valerie was a founding Artistic Partner with Breathe Art Theatre Project, a critically acclaimed cross-border theatre company. Directing credits for Breathe Art: True West and Hedwig and The Angry Inch; for Korda Artistic Productions: She Kills Monsters. She has also worked as the Crew Supervisor for The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor – working with such acts as Billy Joel & Celine Dion. Valerie is also currently the resident Stage Manager for the St Clair Music Theatre Program.

Please refrain from leaving your seat during the performance as patrons leaving the theatre during the performance will be reseated at the house manager’s discretion.

WATCH AND PHONE ALARMS and the SOUND OF CANDY WRAPPERS are distracting. We ask that all chimes, alarms or notifications be turned off and patrons refrain from unwrapping candies during the performance.

We ask that you be considerate of those in the audience who might have ALLERGIES TO COLOGNE AND PERFUME. FOOD AND BEVERAGES are not permitted in the theatre. Patrons are asked to dispose of all garbage in the theatre lobby. Water is permitted in a sealed container.

University Players is sympathetic to those patrons who find SMOKING ON THE STAGE objectionable. In order to address audience concerns we make every effort to eliminate any smoking that is called for in a play script. Should smoking be absolutely necessary, every effort is made to curtail or modify the action, particularly by using prop cigarettes.

In the event of an EMERGENCY, the house lights will be turned on and you will hear a voice-recorded announcement in the theatre. Please follow the directions of the ushers and front of house personnel in the evacuation procedures of the theatre.
