It’s a book I read a dozen times when I was growing up. A beautiful coming of age story. At different moments in my life, I have related to each of the girls. Meg: Strong, responsible and feminine. Beth: Soft, generous, shy. Amy: Prim, social, fashionista. And of course Jo: the dreamer, rebellious, ambitious. All creative. All four wrapped up in a blanket of love given to them by their parents. How could I not want to be like one of them? Or in fact, all of them.
But Louisa May Allcott didn’t shy away from showing the hardships they endure, war and death. It’s a story of experiencing them and coming through it with grace, humility and love. It feels to me to be the perfect story to be sharing right now. With the violence happening in the world, the division of people and their opinions strongly being stated on social media, people losing their homes and finding it difficult to feed their families, it feels right to wrap everyone up the March family’s love.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with these students as they are coming of age. Each of them bringing in their own versions of the characters to the play. We’ve laughed and cried together and they have inspired me with their curiosity, tenacity, and open hearts.
I hope you leave the theatre feeling as hopeful and warm as I have left every rehearsal.
