Business analytics refers to the skills, technologies, practices for continuous iterative exploration and investigation of past business performance to gain insight and drive business planning. Business analytics focuses on developing new insights and understanding of business performance based on data and statistical methods.
Business analytics depends on data quality, the skill of analysts who understand the technologies and the business, and an organizational commitment to using data to gain insights that inform business decisions. Business analytics makes extensive use of analytical modeling and numerical analysis, including explanatory and predictive modeling, and fact-based management to drive decision making. Analytics may be used as input for human decisions or may drive fully automated decisions.
Business Analytics is a growing degree at most universities and is needed in the business environment. Students need Business Analytics programs and courses to support their business success in the marketplace while they identify and analyze patterns in data via visualization, statistical analysis, and data analytics.

Companies who embrace analytics and properly use it to guide their business decisions can enjoy improvements in metrics such as profitability, market share, customer experience, and productivity. Business Analytics takes the vast amounts of data available to a company and converts it into actionable insights. Decisions are therefore more informed and can result in great benefits for a company. A degree in Business Analytics can lead to an exciting and lucrative career!

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of various analyst occupations (operations research analysts, data scientists, market research analysts) is projected to grow 19-36% from 2021 to 2031—much faster than the average for all occupations. Bureau of Labor Statistics data from May 2021 indicated that management analysts make a mean annual salary of $100,530.
Faculty members and administrators in USF’s College of Business & Health Administration are extremely involved in the regional business community. That means they’ve got connections, and they’re constantly being exposed to companies offering impressive internship opportunities. So many, in fact, that there are typically more opportunities than students to fill them! This is a key advantage to becoming a business major at USF. While not a requirement for graduation, internships are strongly encouraged because they offer junior and senior students invaluable real-world learning experiences. Internships can be paid or unpaid, and involve 10-25 hours of work per week for academic credit.
