2022-23 ISSUE 1 2021-2022 Annual Report Issue
Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D. President
Dear Members of the USF Family,
Welcome to the latest issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit magazine! This publication is one way the University of St. Francis strives to remain connected to you—our alumni, our friends, our parents, our employees, and our supporters—in short, our USF family.
We’re certainly much closer to “back to normal” than we have been for over two years, but the reality of the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic remains with us. Our challenge as a welcoming community of learners is to meet our students where they are and help them reconnect with each other and with the warm, wonderful place that is the University of St. Francis. That is the “feeling of being home” that our students have long described when asked about why they chose USF, and that is a relationship that has been uniquely stressed by the past two years. [At this point, some of you may have noted that the title of this issue’s column is a “riff” on this of sorts… more on this in a bit.]
It’s not just our students that need to reconnect… it’s also each and every one of us, because it is we who build and continue the culture that makes the University of St. Francis so special. We need to ensure that we make extra efforts to reconnect with each other and reinforce and celebrate the good that we do for our students and for each other. Reconnecting can help us reestablish and revitalize the ethic of care that we provide to our students who aspire to serve others on our campus of do-ers, and as alumni and friends of the University, each of you is in a position to help us in that regard. (Indeed, we celebrate one way in which you make this possible in this issue’s Honor Roll of Donors!)
Our Mission
As a Catholic university rooted in the liberal arts, we are a welcoming community of learners challenged by Franciscan values and charism, engaged in a continuous pursuit of knowledge, faith, wisdom, and justice, and ever mindful of a tradition that emphasizes reverence for creation, compassion, and peacemaking. We strive for academic excellence in all programs, preparing women and men to contribute to the world through service and leadership.
Oh, and what about that “Learning Community of Welcome?” Here, I draw inspiration from a suggestion that Jesuit author Fr. James Martin, S.J.made to our Sr. Mary Elizabeth (“SME”) Imler, OSF at a recent conference at which they both keynoted... maybe what we need to ensure the successful inclusion of all in our increasingly diverse environment is to be a “learning community of welcome!” As we work with our most diverse undergraduate class of all time—with 52% of students identifying as non-Caucasian and 50% the first in their family to attend college—it is important (and completely consistent with our mission) to be a “community of welcome” to these learners.
As Saints United, we continue to realize our mission by putting into practice and living out our Franciscan values of respect, integrity, compassion, and service, and once again, that’s just what this issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit celebrates.
So pour yourself a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy this latest update about what’s happening at your University of St. Francis. Please know that I consider myself incredibly blessed to serve as your president, and even in this tenth year of my service, I promise to continue to work hard—each and every day—to earn the trust that you have placed in me!
Peace and all good things,
“A Learning Community of Welcome”

Ortega will receive a letter of congratulations from the Lincoln Academy, as well as a certificate signed by Governor Pritzker, a medallion, a challenge coin and a monetary grant.
USF AWARDED COMED GRANT TO SUPPORT CODO PRAIRIE RESTORATION
Once covering over 21 million acres, less than 0.1% of Illinois’ native tallgrass prairie remains. A $10,000 matching grant awarded to the University of St. Francis and its “Reestablishing Illinois Prairie Land: Ongoing Tallgrass Prairie Restoration at Charlotte Codo Prairie in Frankfort, IL” project through the ComEd Green Region Grant program looks to reverse that trend.
The Charlotte Codo Prairie, gifted by the Codo family to USF, is a local prairie restoration site approximately 15 miles east of Joliet. The restoration was initiated by the Codo family in 2014 and is maintained by USF today. Currently, this 47-acre property houses 24 acres of restored tallgrass prairie. Tallgrass prairie fields are used by USF faculty and students for research and educational purposes, including studying biological diversity, learning species identification, and contributing to future restoration practices. Codo Prairie is a site of active restoration.
“We plan to expand the acreage of the restored prairie in a multi-year, multi-stage project,” said Chloe Lash, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at USF and project director for the university’s ComEd Green Region grant. “Seventeen acres of alfalfa field on the property will be the next stage of prairie restoration at Codo. While restoring native tallgrass prairie, we also wish to expand public engagement at Codo,” Lash said.
The project, supported by $10,000 in matching funds by USF, will be pursued in stages.
“This project will not only benefit the USF community, but will engage the broader local community in prairie restoration. USF faculty and students will continue to use Codo Prairie for engagement in scientific research and education. Beyond USF, the Codo Prairie Committee is working on establishing approval processes for research by universities and other scientific groups beyond USF affiliates. We are also working on making Codo Prairie more accessible to the public through community partnerships and long-term plans for the property,” Lash said.

JULEE GARD, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADMINISTRATION & FINANCE, NAMED CHICAGO CFO OF THE YEAR FINALIST
Julee Gard, USF vice president for administration and finance, was named one of six finalists in the Large Not-For-Profit Company category of the 2022 Annual Chicago CFO of the Year Awards Program, hosted by the Chicago Chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI).
“I am honored and humbled to be named a finalist in the 11th Annual Chicago CFO of the Year Awards. I am incredibly fortunate to be doing work that I love at the University of St. Francis—an organization whose mission and core values ring true to me. None of this would be possible without the group of talented professionals I am fortunate to call my team at USF,” Gard said.
Said Erinn Siegel, senior vice president at Wintrust, who helped lead the nomination effort, “Wintrust is exceptionally proud to partner with Julee Gard and the entire team at the University of St. Francis. Julee’s dedication, diligence, and integrity in her work are evident in everything she does, making her an integral part of the ongoing success at the university. The nomination for CFO of the Year is well-deserved, as the bank recognizes Julee’s strong values, work ethic and decision-making capabilities that help define her as an impactful leader in the USF community.”
USF President Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D., also sung Gard’s praises.
“Julee is, quite simply, one of the most talented, capable servant-leaders that I have encountered in over 35 years of working in industry (for-profit) and academia (nonprofit). She is incredibly competent—both technically and inter-personally—and precisely the type of leader that higher education, in general, and USF, in particular, need in the 21st century,” said Dr. Johnson. “This is a wonderful affirmation of our most important financial partners’ faith in and respect for Julee. Just being nominated was honor enough, but for Julee to be named a finalist is simply incredible.”
LEACH COLLEGE OF NURSING’S MSN PROGRAM RECOGNIZED BY FORTUNE
The online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program in USF’s Leach College of Nursing was ranked the top in Illinois according to Fortune’s inaugural Best Online Master’s in Nursing (MSN) Programs in 2022. In fact, USF’s MSN program (#29 overall) was one of only two Illinois programs included in Fortune’s 2022 rankings.
“Graduates from USF’s program incorporate their education and research into a practice that is reflective of the dynamic needs of a diverse population. Through that advanced role, they are instrumental in ensuring health promotion, health maintenance, and health restoration in their community of practice. Through scientific inquiry and collaborative relationships, the advanced practice nurse continually augments and refines the science of nursing,” said USF Leach College of Nursing dean, Yeijin Yeom, Ph.D., R.N., CNE.

3 2022-23 Issue 1 - Annual Report Issue
The University of St. Francis welcomed a wide variety of community leaders, elected officials and university partners to the ninth annual Ambassador Day in mid-October. Event attendees heard the “State of the University” address by USF President Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D. as they enjoyed breakfast and learned more about the university’s mission and importance of USF within the community.
In Assisi
A reflection on USF’s 2022 pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy, by Lisa Sampalis, vice president for university advancement, on behalf of fellow employee pilgrims Arvid Johnson, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Imler, Erin Evans, Arlene Finkle, Rebecca Fry, Julee Gard, Melinda Hammond, Allison Heard, Annette Jelinek, Christina Kuzava, Brandi Morzuch and Eric Ruiz.
This past May, twelve USF staff members began a journey to Assisi. We explored the land and reflected on the values of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. Our pilgrimage included seven different Franciscan institutions of higher education, and was led by our very own Sr. Mary Elizabeth Imler, OSF (aka, “SME”). Sister Imler describes a pilgrimage as “a prayer on your feet.”
When I joined USF in the spring of 2021, I was looking for an answer to what it means to be “Franciscan.” I even Googled it. I found out that being Franciscan is a mindset. It’s inclusive.
In Assisi, we were encouraged to live simply, and embrace “riposo,” which is the Italian equivalent of a siesta or midday break. St. Francis was known to say, “Where there is peace and meditation, there is neither anxiety nor doubt.” So we were invited to live by the pilgrim’s credo/prayer. [See next page.]
As my fellow pilgrim, Professor Erin Evans from the College of Education, said, “Assisi is more than a place; it is a way of life.” Our pilgrimage is not finished, as Saint Clare reminds us: Look. Gaze. Consider. Contemplate. Imitate.
We recently had a reunion, so to speak, with past pilgrims and included potential future dreamers. It is quite evident how this experience makes real our Franciscan way of being. The benefit seemed obvious as to how this pilgrimage helps strengthen the culture that our peers and students experience, so I hope many more can participate in the years to come.
The University of St. Francis is commited to continuing the tradition of the pilgrimage for USF students and staff. If you are interested in sponsoring a pilgrim, please contact Lisa Sampalis at lsampalis@stfrancis.edu or 815-740-5065.

DIANE NILAN ‘73 EDUCATES USF ON HOMELESSNESS
Diane Nilan ‘73, founder of Joliet’s Daybreak Shelter, presented “Shining a Light: What We Need to Know About Family Homelessness” at the University of St. Francis in mid-October. Nilan talked about how she sold her home and possessions to travel and record the stories of poor Americans she encountered for her latest book, “Dismazed and Driven: My Look at Family Homelessness in America.”
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION SERVANT LEADER PROGRAM PRESENTATION & SUITE DEDICATION
USF held an October gathering to share the outcomes and vision of the Servant Leader program in the College of Business & Health Administration with the Board of Trustees, USF Cabinet, and other community members and USF supporters. The celebration included tours of the Servant Leader Suite; a room blessing by Fr. Michael Jenrich, OSF; and remarks from President Arvid C. Johnson, donor Robert Wheeler and student Taylor Petz, current chair of the Servant Leader program.
The program was established by the College of Business & Health Administration to ensure that students live a life full of purpose, thanks to the generous support of Patricia ’67 & Robert Wheeler and the Wheeler Family Foundation. The Wheelers shared the driving force behind the grant and vision for helping the College of Business & Health Administration educate students to become business leaders who understand how to bring their values and faith into their business pursuits.
“We hope the ‘mustard seed’ Pat and I planted will help provide the framework to promote interest and support of this purposeful program,” said Robert Wheeler.
Petz also shared the outcomes of a research project that analyzed data on the impact of the program on the student participants. For more information on the Servant Leader program, contact COBHA Dean Shannon Brown at sbrown1@stfrancis.edu or 815-740-3666.
DONORS ADDRESS NEED FOR ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR WORK SPACE
The university recently dedicated and blessed a renovated main campus suite that now provides much-needed work and meeting space for adjunct instructors. The idea for the project came about organically as Terry D’Arcy, whose mother, Jeanette, is an alumna of the university, toured USF’s main campus in Joliet this summer. Upon seeing the space, which is located on the first floor of Tower Hall and was previously occupied by the university’s graduate admissions team, D’Arcy saw the need for and value of the space and enlisted the support of friend Jeff Kohl of OC Restoration to plan and execute improvements to the area. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in October, followed by tours.
“We are all stewards of what we have been blessed with. Jeff [Kohl] and I feel the same way in that when you see a need, you do what you can to fill it. Even when no one is asking for help and you see that need, sometimes you just step forward and help, which is how this project came about. We are proud to be partners with USF on this,” said D’Arcy.
“It is already being used by adjunct instructors and students as a space to gather and work,” said USF President Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D. “This is a type of space that many universities don’t offer, so I sincerely thank Sue & Terry D’Arcy and Kaity & Jeff Kohl for their generous gifts that made it possible.”

2022 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS
Each year, USF honors distinguished alumni from the four colleges, as well as a Presidential Alumni Award recipient, selected by USF’s president. Congratulations to all awardees, who were formally recognized in October.
PRESIDENTIAL ALUMNI AWARD: THERESA LEE ‘57
Theresa Lee was born in 1933 in Seoul, Korea. She eventually made her way to the U.S. and obtained a B.A. in Philosophy from then-CSF in 1957, then an M.S. in Psychology from Aurora University in 1972.
Lee worked as project director for Catholic Relief Services in Seoul from 1957-1962. In the aftermath of war, she designed programs to help people who were suffering, including women—many war-widows—and orphans. For women without marketable skills, Lee opened Korea’s first women’s vocational school. For the children who might otherwise be abandoned, Lee started a “Help-a-Child” program.
From 1962-1974, Lee was trained as a nun in Korea and established a foundation there. In 1962, she joined the Poor Clares in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1969, she began researching potential sites and means of support for a convent in Korea, and in 1972, she and five other nuns traveled to Jeju to found Korea’s first Poor Clares convent.
She later left the convent and used her skills to work for the U.S. Government from 1974-2004. She served four federal agencies—the General Services Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Defense and Department of Labor in Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Dallas and Atlanta. She was first hired as an investigator, then was promoted to supervisor, then manager, and finally became Deputy Director of Operations in Washington. Lee authored “Divided Land,” an autobiography, and “The Painted Skirt.”
COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES ALUMNI AWARD: FRANK HUETTE ‘93
Frank Huette came to then-College of St. Francis in 1987 with a scholarship to play on the inaugural Saints football team for Gordie Gillespie. A career-ending knee injury took him away from St. Francis for a few years, but he soon returned and was elected president of the Student Government Association in 1991, and graduated in ‘93 with a B.A. in political science.
Huette has lived in Arizona for the last 20 years and is CEO of Liberty Home Products, a specialty fabric company in Phoenix, that manufactures retractable awnings, retractable patio drop screens and custom patio furniture.
A strong believer in a liberal arts curriculum, Huette feels the liberal arts expose individuals to an array of subjects to help them prepare for life: world religion, fine arts, philosophy, writing, music and theater, along with more traditional subjects such as economics, management
and finance. All of these courses helped shape Huette into a wellrounded individual and he feels they provide the educational balance for students to pursue any number of career paths.
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION ALUMNI AWARD: DR. DAVID SCHREINER ‘93
David Schreiner is the president and CEO of Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital—an independent, rural health system in Dixon, Illinois. He has held that role since 2011 and has served the hospital since 1989.
Schreiner graduated from USF in 1993 and went on to earn his doctorate in Values-Driven Leadership at Benedictine University. He received the 2006 Excellence in Teaching Award from USF and still serves as an adjunct faculty member in USF’s Health Services Administration program. In 2007, he was named Dixon Citizen of the Year. He has served in many roles with the Illinois Hospital Association and on statewide boards and task forces to address hospital and health care issues. Schreiner also served as Governor of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a member of the American Hospital Association Small & Rural Governance Council.
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ALUMNI AWARD: DR. LORI MOTSCH ‘99, ‘15
Lori Motsch started as a teacher at St. Jude School in New Lenox, Illinois, and in 1995, was hired to teach in New Lenox School District #122. She obtained a master’s in Curriculum & Instruction from USF in 1999, and completed an administrative certification program at Lewis University in 2001. She went on to serve as an assistant principal at Cherry Hill School, where she supervised the Early Childhood program. In 2005, the district passed a referendum to build three new schools and Motsch was appointed principal of one of them. Her desire to learn and grow led her to USF again to obtain a doctorate in Educational Leadership with superintendent certification.
In 2018, Motsch transitioned from principal to director of personnel, then she was named superintendent in 2020. She says her perspective on leadership was formed through her experiences at USF, where the focus was on servant leadership. She believes the key to leadership is practicing empathy and perspective, which was effective while navigating as a new superintendent during a global pandemic. In addition, surrounding herself with supportive mentors and family members has encouraged her success.

LEACH COLLEGE OF NURSING ALUMNI AWARD: APRIL KUBINSKI ‘08, ‘13
After a successful HR career in a fortune 500 company, April Kubinski, MSN, APRN, FNP-FPA experienced a family tragedy in 2001 that allowed her to witness the health care field firsthand. She decided to obtain a BSN in Nursing at USF, and following graduation, she became an emergency room nurse at McNeal Hospital, where she enjoyed caring for emergency room and trauma patients. During that time, she also found a passion for assisting sexual assault victims and soon joined the board of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner in Illinois.
Her experiences in various hospital settings made her realize the level of care and compassion that was lacking due to understaffing and overwhelming wait times. In 2011, she enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at USF and graduated in 2013 with an interest in community urgent care. In 2015, Kubinski and her business partner, Amy Vertin, founded and opened Emediate Cure Quick Care in Joliet. In the following years, a second location opened in Shorewood and a third recently opened in Plainfield.
Kubinski has successfully passed Full Practice Authority for APRNs and continues to give back and support organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Morningstar Mission, and her church. She is a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a member of the Joliet and Shorewood chambers of commerce, and has several professional affiliations including the ANA, AANP, ANCC and UCA.
LEACH COLLEGE OF NURSING ALUMNI AWARD: AMY VERTIN ‘13
Amy Vertin, MSN, FPA, APRN, FNP-C started her nursing career in the emergency room of St. Joseph Hospital in 2004, after graduating with honors from Illinois State University. She loved the fast-paced, unpredictable environment in the emergency room and attributes her future growth to the experience and skills she gained in her 10 years at St. Joe’s. In 2011, Vertin enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at USF, which set the stage for her future success.
After graduating from USF in 2013, she expanded her clinical experience to include urgent care. She became a certified medical examiner for DOT and a limited license X-ray technician. In 2015, she and her business partner, April Kubinski, founded and opened Emediate Cure Quick Care. Being both nurse practitioners and female business owners, they faced many uphill battles and challenges but ultimately overcame them all and succeeded in opening an additional two locations in seven years.
Vertin was elected and joined the ISAPN board to advocate for nurse practitioner rights in the State of Illinois and successfully helped lobby and pass the law allowing full practice authority for APRN in Illinois. She has accomplished a lot since her graduation from USF and plans to keep growing and paving the way for the next generation of APRNs.
BELOW: The annual awards dinner celebrated award recipients and honored year alumni from the classes of 2017, 2012, 2007, 2002, 1997, 1992, 1987, 1982, 1977, 1972 and before. 50th reunion alumnae were recognized and inducted into USF’s Assisian Club.

SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT
CANDICE (POLOVINA) ROSEN ‘88 ENDOWED NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Candice Rosen is a lifelong student and educator. Her higher education began at the South Chicago Community Hospital of Nursing. While raising four children, she continued at then-College of St. Francis, earning a bachelor’s degree in Science, a master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University, and a certificate in Health Counseling from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Her broad education in health related subjects gives her a unique perspective when it comes to healthy living. She is a published author and lifestyle coach. Her goal is to improve the lifestyle of the general public through overall health, therefore, the Candice (Polovina) Rosen ‘88 Nursing Scholarship at USF will be awarded to a student with financial need who is pursuing a nursing degree. Preference will be given to a first-generation high school graduate and a first-generation college graduate.
MARGARET AND JOHN PHILIP COLEMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Siblings Margaret and John Philip were idealists who, in their brief lives, sought peace, justice, honor, charity, and always the greater good. A family donor established this scholarship in their name to inspire future students. Recipients must be a sophomore, junior or senior Literature (English) or Art major or minor at USF, and give evidence of practicing Christian ideals. Faculty members will select the student recipient.
"The University of St. Francis changed my life and stimulated my thirst for knowledge. Education is power and something that can never be taken away. USF is dear to my heart and I feel a responsibility to continue the legacy of the university as a philanthropist and trustee. The Candice Rosen Nursing Scholarship provides the opportunity for a firstgeneration student to pursue their dream of a nursing degree." - Candice Rosen

THE SAN DAMIANO CROSS EXPLAINED
Toward the top of the cross, Jesus is fully clothed in regal garments and carrying the cross as a triumphant scepter. He is climbing out of the tomb and into the heavenly courts. Ten angels are crowded around—five have their hands extended in a welcoming gesture to Jesus, who himself has his hand raised in the form of a greeting.
The largest figure is Jesus Christ, represented both as wounded and strong. He projects the life of divine nature in a body pierced by nails in the hands and feet, by the crown of thorns on his head, and by the soldier’s lance in his side.
The next largest figures are the five witnesses of the crucifixion. The first four have halos because they are saints who gave their lives for the Lord. On the left side of Jesus are the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist. At their feet is a smaller figure, Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced the side of Jesus with a lance.
At the foot of the cross there are six faded figures, two of whom have halos. In accordance with the traditions of the day, these six are the patrons of Umbria, the region surrounding Assisi: St. John, St. Michael, St. Rufino, St. John the Baptist, St. Peter and St. Paul.
“San
At the very top of the cross is the Hand of God with two fingers extended. This is to be understood as the blessing of God the Father on the sacrifice of his Son.
At both ends of the crossbar are six angels, marveling over the crucifixion.
On the right side of Jesus, the three larger figures are Mary Magdalene; Mary, Mother of James; and the centurion who, in Matthew’s Gospel account, asks Christ to heal his son. At their feet is a smaller figure, Stephaton, the soldier who offered Jesus the sponge soaked in vinegar wine. Peering over the left shoulder of the centurion is a small face with the tops of the heads of three others beside him. This represents the centurion’s son, who was healed by Jesus, and the rest of his family.
On the right side of the picture next to the left calf of Jesus, there is a small figure of a fowl. Some art historians have interpreted it to be a rooster, (Jesus’ denial by Peter); other commentators see it as a peacock, a frequent symbol of immortality in Early Christian art. Along the lower right side of the shaft, there is a small animal, possibly a cat.
