STUDY ABROAD

Why Study Abroad? Education is not restricted to the classroom. Life experience and personal development are just as important as passing exams on the road to success. Combine all three and study abroad. See the world, make new friends, and broaden your horizons. Stand out and have an education and experience for life. What’s holding you back?! Nothing to lose, everything to gain

Employability

Home will always be there, no matter how far you roam. But you will return with so much more than your education.

“International Experience” is more frequently being asked for in job descriptions. With a study period abroad you will equip yourself with a range of skills and experiences while gaining a much sought after international profile.

New perspectives

You will meet new cultures and people with a very different background than you. You will make friends for life, and gain an international network you can use in the future. You will learn to cope with unfamiliar situations and learn a lot about your tolerance, your insight and yourself.

Make the most

Student years are meant to be the most enriching and enjoyable years in life. They are a time of exploration and self-discovery, of new experiences and lasting memories. Make the most of it and study abroad.

Ida did an exchange at the ESC Rennes International School of Business in France “now I have friends from many countries. And they all study the same course as me, so I've gained work contacts as well as places to crash all over the world!“

How to get started? When planning to study abroad it pays off to start your preparation early! The application process takes time depending on where you want to go, but your efforts will be worth it when you embark on the adventure of studying abroad.

Get Support

The University of Southern Denmark has more than 500 exchange agreements around the globe! Exchange studies are tuition free, but you will have to cover travel and living expenses yourself – however SDU will assist you with a travel grant based on the exchange program that you participate in. You can also support your study abroad period by applying for private grants and scholarships.

Conditions

You can go abroad as part of your studies both on your Bachelors and Masters – but you will have to have completed at least 3 semesters during your bachelor before departure. Your study abroad needs to be credit bearing – meaning that you can transfer credits to your degree.

Preparation

You will need to start planning your study abroad period about 1-1 1/2 years in advance depending on where you want to go, and with which program.

Credit Transfer

You will have to plan your study program so that you ensure you follow courses that have the appropriate level and workload. You should ask the academic advisor at your Faculty for advice on this.

Liv did an exchange in Hochschule Pforzheim in Germany “I felt very welcomed. They have an amazing International office. They are very flexible, they organise International events and try to bring Germans and International students together. I would definitely recommend it! The chance of you regretting not going is greater. “I wish I would have went,“ is one thing I hear often.“

What are your options? Study abroad on an Exchange agreement

Do your lab-work, clinical stay or fieldwork elsewhere

In Europe

Do a self-arranged stay outside of SDU’s network

If you travel with Erasmus+, Nordplus or on one of SDU’s Overseas exchange agreements, an exchange place is reserved for you. Tuition is free and the host university often helps with accommodation and reception. With the Erasmus+ or Nordplus exchange program you can study within the EU as well as Switzerland, Turkey and our Nordic neighbor countries in Scandinavia. Application deadlines are March 1st for the following academic year, and October 1st for the following spring semester.

Overseas

SDU also has a number of exchange agreements in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Indonesia, USA, Venezuela and many, many more countries! SDU International can help you with the application process as well as guidance with the visa, vaccination process etc. Application deadline is November 1st for the following academic year.

If you get the pre-approval from your study board, SDU International can help you with guidance to handle the paperwork, visa, vaccinations as well as providing you with a grant to cover extra expenses.

If you travel on a self-arranged stay you will have to finance and plan the stay on your own. If you cannot find an exchange place suiting your needs through SDU, you have the option to arrange your study abroad yourself. The advantage is that you can choose freely where and when you want to go, which gives more flexibility. The disadvantage is the risk of a lower quality experience outside of SDU’s network and you will have to do much of the planning yourself. You can apply for the Study Abroad Scholarship, at the SU office at the student service to help cover your tuition fee. (If you are eligible for SU grant and Loan Scheme) Often you must finance a smaller portion yourself. Prepare to plan ahead – and start your preparations 1-1½ years before you want to go abroad.

Do an Internship abroad

If you find an internship outside of Denmark, it can be both Europe and overseas, SDU International can help you with guidance about your credit transfer, the paperwork as well as allocating a grant to help with the extra expenses.

Whatever you plan to do, please come by SDU International, in order to get more information or clarification about different possibilities for going abroad.

Application deadline is 1 month before the internship.

Study Abroad Ida now studies Communication Management and leadership. She did an exchange in Rennes, France.

Why Study Abroad?

After four and a half years constantly studying it was time to try something different. To challenge myself and get away from the routine.

How was your study experience?

It was a bit overwhelming at the start, it being a new country. English is the language in school, but outside there was no English at all so I had my trusty phrase book in my back pocket! Not having much French before I went didn’t worsen my experience, it probably enhanced it. I loved the feeling of novelty.

How helpful was SDU?

Very helpful. They gave me tips and tricks. And they helped with my application. I got the Erasmus grant from SDU and stipends from banks and a few private grants. This was on top of the SU I still received in France.

fraid a e b t “Don’ language” of the

Would you recommend it?

Definitely. People don’t know how many opportunities they have, and it’s not only English speaking countries. Get out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid of the language. I would go again in a heartbeat. I would go anywhere in the world should the opportunity arise. It’s an experience everyone should have. And you get paid to do it. It’s a no brainer!

Study Abroad Anders studies Comparative Public Policy & Welfare Studies. He did an exchange in Umeå, Sweden

How well were you integrated into the local culture? I was integrated very well. The buddy-programme helped exchange students, including myself, to meet Swedes and it was easy to hang out with them at the lake, looking for the Aurora Borealis. We also took part in hiking, white-river- rafting and kayaking events organised by the university and even organised our own little trip to Junosuando to go dogsledding and see the ice-hotel.

Is there anything that you wish you knew before you went?

How hard the northern Swedish dialect is to understand. Both in regards to my fieldwork and the social aspect of my stay, I wish I had signed up for a language class in time. Swedes do not naturally understand Danish either and so English became a comfortable middle ground.

skills h s i l g “my Ened greatly “ improv

Do you have any packing tips?

Vacuum bags. The single most ingenious way to pack your pillow and duvet and your clothes. Not having to buy that stuff upon arrival can save you loads of money. If heavy boots or other large items may come in handy sometime after your initial arrival, consider not packing them and instead sending them with mail companies.

Did you get financial help?

I received the Erasmus scholarship and my SU.

Would you do it again? Definitely.

Study Abroad Mads studies Biology. He went to Beijing, China for 1 year through a well establish Danish-Chinese programme.

Why did you Study Abroad?

Who doesn’t want to study abroad? It was a great opportunity. Life is very easy in Denmark and you don’t realise that until you step out of your comfort zone. Many Danish Universities have a collaboration with Chinese Institutions. Through the collaboration they offer 7 programmes with room for 15 Danes in each programme. Each programme lasts two years, so second year Danes were there to welcome us and we had a kind of “russ” the first week! I lived in a large dorm with people from Denmark, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. With 20 Danes there was a good cultural safety net with always someone from home you could talk to.

Did you get financial help?

There was no tuition fee, I had to pay for flights, accommodation was 900DKK a month and I had my SU.

Would you do it again?

Yes no doubt. I made some good friends and I’ll see them again. A classmate has invited me to a wedding in China.

Any advice for people wanting to study abroad?

Go study abroad, you won’t regret it. No matter what, you’ll always gain something from it.

Study Abroad Katherine studies Civil Engineering. She did a semester at Iowa State University, USA

How was it?

I got a Buddy, Abby, she picked me up, brought me to Walmart, showed me around and we are still in contact today. I mostly hung out with Internationals. We all had a reunion in Prague this year. So we still keep in touch. They are mostly European, engineering students, so it’s great to already have an International network and contacts in my field of study.

Did you get help from SDU?

SDU helped with the application process. I also got 10,000 DKK from SDU to go abroad. Then I applied for another 10,000 DKK scholarship in Denmark. And my SU on top of that.

Was it academically rewarding?

I had the course geotech there and in Denmark and learned they do things differently in both places. So I can see a problem from a European and American perspective and can find the best way of tackling the problem. The experience also looks good on my resume.

How was the goodbye?

Saying goodbye was weird and hard. Before I went I was thinking that half a year is going to be too long because of missing family, but you get there and your schedule is always full and suddenly there is only a week to go and you’re saying goodbye to your best friends. I wanted to go home but I wanted to stay another 6 months as well.
